Rahal, Honda Finish Third in Road America Return

For the first time since 2007, Indy car racing returned to the historic Road America circuit with Graham Rahal leading the way for Honda, scoring a third-place Verizon IndyCar Series finish Sunday in front of a massive crowd at the 4.0-mile road course in Elkhart Lake, Wis.
Starting sixth, Rahal ran in the lead pack throughout the 50-lap contest, battling for a podium position with a half-dozen fellow competitors as the race ran caution-free for the first 39 laps. At that point, Conor Daly spun off track and into the Turn One safety barriers, following an apparent suspension failure, bringing out the sole full-course caution of the race.
Prior to his incident, Daly had been one of the strongest Honda runners in the field. Qualifying a career-best ninth for Dale Coyne Racing, the rookie moved up to sixth following the first round of pit stops and appeared headed for a finish of sixth or higher.
When the green flag waved on Lap 44, Rahal was running fourth, but soon passed Simon Pagneaud to gain third, and would hold that position to the checkers six laps later. Meanwhile, Hunter-Reay went on a charge, moving from seventh to pass Charlie Kimball, Helio Castroneves and Pagenaud to finish fourth, his third top-four finish of the season. Carlos Munoz rounded out the top-10 finishers for Honda.

The Verizon IndyCar Series now takes a week off before resuming with the second and final short oval race of the 2016 season, the Iowa Corn 300, July 10 at Iowa Speedway.
Graham Rahal (#15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda) started 6th, finished 3rd, second podium finish of 2016: "It's great to get a good result. I'm pleased with what we did today and accomplished for the Gehl team. It was cool to have the yellow Gehl car back on track. For us, and our year, I think this was pretty big. We've been fast everywhere, we've just had a lot of stuff go against us. Simon [Pagenaud] and I, for like 20 laps, he was right behind me and I was giving it everything I had. We battled hard and had a good day. Our tire strategy hurt us a bit, we just made the wrong tire call. It is what it is and we still came out of here third. We learned from it and will come back stronger next year. It's great to be back at Road America. The fans are just amazing. We wanted to win today but it was a good points day overall. This is our second podium of the year, and hopefully we can get on a bit of a run here. We're going to keep fighting hard and do the best that we can and try to get Honda a win this year."
Ryan Hunter-Reay (#28 Andretti Autosport Honda) started 8th, finished 4th: "It was good, considering we really had to fight for it today. The car was not ideal in the beginning of the race, especially on used [softer compound] Reds [tires] and [the standard] Blacks. Once we got going, at the end, everything started to suit us. The DHL car was good at the end. We had a pretty good fight with a few [other cars]. There was some pretty dirty racing, though, by a couple others, but we'll talk about all of that stuff [with the other drivers] after the weekend. It was really great to see the fan turn out today here at Road America – any time you see a bunch of fans [at the track] starting right away on Friday, you know it's going to be a good weekend."
Art St. Cyr (President, Honda Performance Development) on today's race at Road America: "It's great to have IndyCar back to Road America. This was my first visit here and, driving on the track earlier this weekend, I could see why all the drivers rave about it. Congratulations to Graham [Rahal] for his podium finish and a great late-race charge from Ryan [Hunter-Reay] to finish fourth. Also, Conor [Daly] is worth noting. He was headed for a likely fifth-place finish before a suspension failure ended his day with just 10 laps to go."
