2015 Honda CR-V - Powertrain

Overview
Powering the 2015 CR-V is a new Earth Dreams Technology™ direct-injected 2.4-liter DOHC i-VTEC inline 4-cylinder engine. The direct injection (DI) system and other technologies combine to deliver a significant 11 percent increase in peak engine torque, to 181 lb-ft1, with greater power available over a wide operating range. Peak power is 185 horsepower2 and the engine meets stringent PZEV and ULEV-2 emissions standards running on regular unleaded gasoline.

The CR-V’s new powerplant is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with an overall ratio range 33-percent wider than the 5-speed automatic transmission it replaces, which is a major contributor to the CR-V’s improvement in fuel efficiency. Other notable contributors are the efficient direct injection, a new combustion chamber design, offset cylinder bores and a range of friction-reducing technologies. These improvements net an anticipated EPA fuel-economy rating of 27/34/293 mpg (city/hwy/combined) for front-wheel drive models and 26/33/283 mpg for models equipped with Real Time AWD. Further enhancing all-around performance, engine weight was reduced by 1.3-percent courtesy of a lighter block design, a new plastic cam cover and a more efficient accessory belt design.

For drivers who desire the four-season confidence of all-wheel drive, the 2015 CR-V is available with Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System to help provide power to those wheels with traction in low-grip driving conditions such as snow, rain and unpaved road surfaces. The electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system provides a fast, intuitive initial response when a loss of traction is detected and minimizes the negative effect on fuel efficiency.

Cylinder Block, Crankshaft and Pistons
The CR-V’s 2.4-liter engine has a lighter-weight die-cast aluminum cylinder block with a main-bearing single cradle design that creates a rigid assembly to help minimize noise and vibration. Cast-in iron cylinder liners provide long-lasting durability. Each journal on the forged-steel crankshaft is micro-polished to reduce internal friction. To improve smoothness throughout the rpm range and help lower noise levels, the CR-V is fitted with an internal balancer unit. Consisting of a pair of chain-driven counter-rotating shafts located in the oil pan, the balancing system helps quell the inherent second-order harmonic vibrations that normally impact inline 4-cylinder engines.

To reduce piston-sliding friction, the cylinder bores are offset by 8.0 mm from the crankshaft. This gives the connecting rods a more favorable angle during each power stroke, which reduces side loading on the pistons and in turn, improves efficiency. The engine also features a forged crankshaft for high rigidity and low friction. With four smaller-diameter counterweight and four larger-diameter counterweights, the crankshaft offers optimized flywheel effect while minimizing total weight.

Lightweight pistons have a carefully optimized skirt design to minimize reciprocating mass, and reduced weight minimizes vibration and increases operating efficiency. The piston crowns are dished to help maintain stable combustion and to optimize distribution of the stratified fuel charge from the direct injector in each cylinder. This close control over the combustion process boosts overall operating efficiency.

Cylinder Head and Valvetrain
A lightweight cylinder head made of pressure-cast aluminum alloy uses front-located exhaust ports that provide greater freedom in the layout of the close-coupled catalytic converter which mounts directly to the cylinder head. With exhaust passages cast directly into the cylinder head, the need for a traditional separate exhaust manifold is eliminated.

A silent-chain drives dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder, and features a double-arm tensioner design that reduces operating friction. The cam drive is designed to be maintenance free throughout the life of the engine. To further reduce friction, the finish of the camshaft journals has been improved.

The combustion chamber shape and valve angles have been optimized to boost fuel efficiency and power. The previous-generation CR-V engine had a 51-degree included angle between the intake and exhaust valves; the new engine features an included valve angle of 35 degrees. The narrower valve angle decreases the surface-to-volume ratio and helps create a flatter, more compact combustion chamber that reduces unburned hydrocarbon emissions. With this new combustion chamber shape and the precise control of direct injection, the compression ratio has been increased to 11.1:1 (up from 10.5:1 on the previous port-injected engine), yet the engine still operates on regular unleaded fuel.

The cylinder head features a new high-tumble intake-port design. In combination with the new combustion chamber and piston crown shape, the design’s high level of airflow tumble helps create a homogenous fuel mixture for low fuel consumption and high airflow for high power output.

Friction-Reducing Technologies
The CR-V’s engine makes use of new friction-reducing technologies designed to improve engine efficiency. The outer skirts of the lightweight aluminum pistons feature a low-friction molybdenum coating applied in a unique dot-pattern. The result is reduced overall friction as the pistons move within the cylinder bores. A process called “plateau honing” further lowers the friction level between the pistons and the cylinders by creating an ultra-smooth surface. Plateau honing is a 2-stage machining procedure that uses two grinding processes instead of the more conventional single honing process. This also enhances the long-term wear characteristics of the engine. Due to the ultra-smooth cylinder surface, low tension piston rings could be utilized, which reduce friction while maintaining sealing efficiency. A low-friction cam chain and double-arm tensioner, improvement in the camshaft journal finish, and the use of low viscosity engine oil (0W-20) further reduce friction.

Weight Savings
To increase overall vehicle efficiency, significant efforts were made to reduce the weight of the 2015 CR-V’s engine. Through clever engineering and attention to detail, multiple components were redesigned to be lighter while still providing Honda’s renowned durability and efficiency. Chief among the changes is a more rigid yet lighter cylinder block. Block weight was shaved by reducing the mismatched mating surface areas and deleting the breather passage; the cam chain chamber is used for breathing instead. Optimizing the shape of its skirt helped to remove weight from the pistons. A reduction in the diameter of four crankshaft counterweights, while increasing the diameter of the other four provides the same level of balancing while reducing weight. A high efficiency accessory belt design saves weight with the elimination of the idler pulley, decreased diameter of the other pulleys, the adoption of a hydraulic auto tensioner, a resin tensioner pulley and decreased belt length. The oil filter and fuel injector bases, oil gallery cap and compressor bracket were all eliminated with the components being mounting directly. Having one of the catalytic converters mounted directly to the cylinder head and integrated into the exhaust pipe shed further weight. The utilization of a resin cylinder head cover, a press-fit water pump pulley, the secondary balancer being integrated with the oil pump, a compact high-output ACG (alternating current generator) and wire harness routing efficiencies and length reduction also reduced the overall weight of the new engine.

i-VTEC Valve Control System
The CR-V’s direct-injected 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve i-VTEC engine uses an advanced valve-control system to combine high power output with high fuel efficiency and low emissions. The CR-V system combines Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC), which varies valve lift, timing and duration of the intake valves, with VTC (Variable Timing Control), which continuously adjusts the intake camshaft phase. At low rpm, the VTEC intake valve timing and lift are optimized for rapid swirl-pattern cylinder filling. As engine rpm builds past 4800 rpm, the VTEC system transitions to a high-lift, long-duration intake cam profile for superior high-rpm engine power.

The “intelligent” portion of the system is its ability to continuously vary the timing (phasing) of the intake cam relative to that of the exhaust camshaft. This helps boost power and also provides a smoother idle (allowing idle speed to be reduced). The intake cam timing is varied based on input from sensors that monitor rpm, timing, throttle opening, cam position and exhaust air-fuel ratio. The result is increased fuel efficiency and lower nitrous-oxide (NOx) emissions.

Direct Injection System
The CR-V’s engine incorporates direct-injection (DI) for 2015. Conventional engines using multi-port fuel injection mix fuel and air before they enter the combustion chamber, with direct injection, fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber. This allows for better combustion and overall efficiency. The CR-V’s system features a compact high-pressure direct-injection pump that allows both high fuel flow and pulsation suppression, and variable pressure control optimizes injector operation. A multi-hole injector delivers fuel directly into each cylinder.

The multi-hole injectors create the ideal fuel/air mixture in the cylinders and also create a weak stratified combustion effect that maximizes fuel efficiency at lower power conditions. The stratified charge puts a mixture that’s richer near the spark plug for easy ignition, while other areas on the combustion chamber have a leaner fuel/air ratio. Based on the operating conditions, the direct injection system alters its function for best performance. Upon cold engine startup, fuel is injected into the cylinders on the compression stroke. This creates a weak stratified charge effect that improves engine start-up and reduces exhaust emissions before normal operating temperature is reached. Once the engine is fully warm for maximum power and fuel efficiency, fuel is injected during the intake stroke, creating a more homogeneous fuel/air mix in the cylinder that is aided by the high-tumble intake port design. This improves volumetric efficiency, and the cooling effect of the incoming fuel improves anti-knock performance.

Drive-by-Wire Throttle Control
An electronic drive-by-wire system helps enhance the driving character of the CR-V. With smart electronics connecting the throttle pedal to the throttle butterfly valve in the intake manifold, the engine response can be optimized to suit the driving conditions and to better match the driver's expectations. By eliminating the direct throttle cable connection to the engine, the ratio between pedal movement and the DC motor-controlled throttle butterfly can be continuously optimized. To determine the current driving conditions, the system monitors pedal position, throttle position, vehicle speed, engine speed and engine vacuum. This information is then used to define the throttle control sensitivity.

High-Efficiency Catalytic Converters
Key contributors to the CR-V engine’s excellent emissions performance are its high-efficiency catalytic converters. One converter mounts directly to the front of the cylinder head, close-coupled for fast activation after the engine is started. A second converter is positioned slightly downstream, beneath the passenger compartment floor. Both converters use a thin-wall design that increases internal reaction area and improves efficiency. A high-efficiency exhaust system and high-density catalytic converters help the CR-V engine meet stringent LEV2-ULEV emissions certifications in California and Federal BIN5 certifications.

Multi-stage Alternator Control
To improve battery life and help reduce fuel consumption, the CR-V has a new multi-stage alternator control system. By closely monitoring the battery’s charge state, the system can adjust alternator output more precisely than the previous high/low mode system. This fine control reduces excessive charge or discharge and can help increase battery life by up to 30 percent. By inhibiting surplus power generation, the multistage alternator control along with other electrical system efficiencies contributes to an improvement in fuel efficiency.

Fuel System
The 15.3-gallon fuel tank is molded of high-density polyethylene for low weight, corrosion elimination and impact resistance. It is positioned immediately ahead of the rear wheels to help guard against collision damage. The corners of the tank are rounded and the inside of the tank is baffled to diminish the likelihood of sloshing-fuel noise. A lightweight and efficient fuel pump is housed inside the fuel tank. The fuel system also incorporates a returnless fuel supply system that helps reduce vapor generation, and a lifetime fuel-filter that requires no regular maintenance. The CR-V's minimum fuel grade requirement is regular unleaded.

Torque-Rod Engine Mount System
A torque-rod engine-mount system enhances the CR-V’s quiet and vibration-free operation. The system resists the engine’s rotational torque inputs to the chassis, reducing idle vibration and mid- and high-frequency engine noise during acceleration.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
The CR-V’s new Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) offers seamless gear ratio transitions and excellent acceleration matched with efficient low-rpm cruising. The CVT has a 33-percent wider overall ratio spread than the 5-speed automatic transmission it replaces. This change results in strong acceleration performance coupled with reduced engine rpm at high road speeds. The highly efficient operation of the CVT contributes a significant improvement in overall fuel efficiency compared to the prior 5-speed automatic transmission.

The CVT is comprised of a torque converter which drives the variable-width drive pulley that is connected by a steel belt to the variable-width driven pulley. With its angled inner faces, the belt can circle the angled pulley faces at varying diameters depending on the pulley width, which alters the effective ratio between the pulleys. Since there are no steps in the pulley faces, the range of possible gear ratios is nearly infinite. This ultra-fine control of the gear ratio is the key to the CVT’s greater efficiency over a conventional automatic transmission with a limited number of discrete gear ratios. Instead of approximating the correct ratio for the conditions, like a conventional automatic does, the CR-V’s CVT can precisely select the optimum ratio from moment to moment without steps or slippage. To increase the efficiency of the interface of belt to pulleys, the coefficient of friction was improved by 10-percent with optimized metal contact allowing for less belt tension.

Computer control of the transmission allows the ratio between the pulleys to be altered almost instantly to best suit the driving conditions and accelerator pedal use. A planetary gear set allows the transmission to shift between forward and reverse directions with the operation of a multi-plate clutch, with plates that have a 10-percent increase in surface friction. A variable-flow oil pump optimizes oil flow to the transmission’s moving parts while minimizing the load on the engine. The CR-V’s CVT is more compact and lighter compared to a conventional CVT by utilizing metal gaskets, having a unit-type body construction and fewer parts through integration, such as the parking gear being integrated with the driven pulley and a function-consolidated stator. Compared to the previous generation’s 5-speed automatic transmission, the CVT has more compact dimensions (24 mm shorter) and has a higher torque capacity (up by 17-percent).

G-Design Shift Feature
The CR-V CVT is designed to provide the optimum gear ratio for the driving conditions and to offer a more natural driving feel than some previous CVT transmissions that have a disconnected “rubber-band” feel compared to a conventional automatic transmission; the CR-V also offers stronger acceleration response with a linear build in engine rpm that avoids much of the “slipping” feeling some drivers notice with other CVTs. The G-design Shift logic gives the CR-V a more linear and sporty driving feel.

The CR-V CVT’s G-design Shift logic is designed to offer more immediate acceleration response than either conventional automatics or other CVT designs. When abruptly applying power from a steady-state cruising speed, the CR-V CVT immediately sends power to the drive wheels while simultaneously adjusting the gear ratio (seamlessly and progressively downshifting) to smoothly bring the engine to its horsepower peak in a linear way. By comparison, a conventional automatic is slower to respond and loses time making multiple downshifts. Since the automatic transmission has a limited number of separate, discrete ratios, even when fully downshifted, it can only approximate the optimum engine rpm as speed increases, which reduces acceleration efficiency.

CVT Automatic Modes
The transmission can be operated in three different fully automatic modes with the console-mounted straight-gate shifter. The D mode is ideal for most driving situations, and combines fuel efficiency with smooth operation and responsive power when needed. The S mode is for more performance-oriented driving, and features more aggressive transmission mapping to keep engine rpm higher for greater acceleration and response. The L mode is for lower speeds and provides additional engine braking.

ECON Mode
All CR-V models are equipped with an ECON button on the left side of the instrument panel as part of the Eco Assist™ system. When activated, ECON mode alters the Drive-by-Wire throttle system response curve in the range from about 10 percent of pedal movement to 80 percent. With less gain, the throttle opening in this range increases more gradually to reduce a potentially excessive peak input for better fuel efficiency. ECON mode also alters the operation of the cruise control system and the air conditioning system, allowing for slightly increased variances with the set speed or the set temperature in order to conserve fuel whenever possible.

Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System
The 2015 CR-V is offered with Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™. The compact and efficient Real Time AWD provides a high degree of four-wheel-drive sophistication in rain, snow, dirt roads and dry pavement. System operation is completely automatic and virtually transparent in smoothness. Unlike some four-wheel-drive systems that require the driver to select a drive mode based on the perceived need, Real Time AWD’s automatic operation means the system is always ready to transfer torque to the rear wheels, allowing the driver to focus more on driving when situations are demanding.

The capabilities of the system are prioritized to further support high fuel efficiency and all-around drivability on-road as well as off-road. Assisting the front wheels when it is beneficial, Real Time AWD instantly powers the rear wheels when starting from a stop, even on dry pavement, working in cooperation with Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA)4 and the Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS). The Real Time AWD system can operate at all speeds when needed. When torque transfer to the rear wheels is not required such as when cruising, drive to the rear wheels is decoupled for reduced drag.

The CR-V’s all-wheel drive system consists of the conventional front-wheel-drive system, a compact transfer case that distributes torque to a propeller shaft running the length of the vehicle, the rear differential, an electronically-controlled hydraulic pump, a multi-plate clutch, and left and right rear-wheel driveshafts. The multi-plate clutch connects the propeller shaft to the rear differential and is operated by an electric motor driving a hydraulic pump. The electric motor is controlled by the Intelligent Control System, which means that the system can actively apportion power based on the conditions. The system doesn’t merely react to front wheel spin; it minimizes wheel spin before it happens by sending power to the rear wheels accordingly. For efficiency, the electric motor activating the hydraulic pump is idled when not required, further reducing drag within the system and helping to reduce energy consumption.

When starting on snow for example, the system sends power to the rear wheels right from the start, minimizing the potential for front wheel spin. The system can also detect when the CR-V is climbing a hill and sends a greater amount of power to the rear wheels in cooperation with the Hill Start Assist feature. Hill Start Assist maintains brake pressure briefly after the brake pedal is released, giving the driver time to accelerate and smoothly resume motion. The Intelligent Control System instantly assesses the road’s slope angle using a G-sensor and the level of grip as detected by VSA allowing added initial apportioning of torque to the rear wheels for smooth starts.

In summary, Real Time AWD offers the optimal balance of confident capability and user friendliness in a lightweight and fuel-efficient design. The driver can simply step on the accelerator and let the system maximize use of available grip and climbing capability.

Maintenance Minder
The CR-V’s vehicle maintenance schedule is calculated by the Maintenance Minder system. The Maintenance Minder system automatically indicates when to have standard service performed based on actual driving conditions (tracked by the ECU) and minimizes the guesswork related to whether the vehicle is being used in standard or severe use conditions for maintenance interval purposes. The display indicates when to change the oil, air cleaner, transmission fluid, spark plugs or coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires. As calculated by the Maintenance Minder system, the CR-V has an engine tune-up interval of 100,000+/- miles or more.

2015 Honda CR-V - Body

Overview
Over 60 changes have been made to the 2015 CR-V’s body to increase safety performance through better energy absorption, enhance dynamic performance with increased body stiffness, and improve noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) through enhanced sealing, sound insulation and body tuning. The 2015 CR-V is slightly longer than the previous model due to increases in the front and rear.

Key New Body Features

  • Improved Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure
  • Increased body rigidity
  • Increased door sealing
  • Enhanced NVH abatement
  • Length increased by 1.1 inches

Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™)
The 2015 CR-V utilizes Honda’s proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure technology to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. ACE utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash.

Unlike most conventional designs that direct frontal crash energy only to the lower load-bearing structures in the front end, ACE actively channels frontal crash energy to both upper and lower structural elements, including the floor frame rails, side sills and A-pillars. By creating specifically engineered "pathways" that help distribute these frontal impact forces through a greater percentage of the vehicle's total structure, ACE can more effectively direct those forces around and away from the passenger compartment to help limit cabin deformation and further improve occupant protection. And like other Honda models, the CR-V has an impact-absorbing front body design to help attenuate energy in the event of a frontal collision with a pedestrian.

The numerous body structure improvements are expected to help the CR-V achieve top crash-test ratings including a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with a GOOD rating in the small overlap frontal crash test, along with a five-star Overall Vehicle Score from the NHTSA . The body improvements also increase torsional rigidity by 5.7 percent and bending stiffness by 2.7 percent.

Exterior Dimensions
The fundamental goodness of the 2014 CR-V’s packaging is retained for the 2015 model, with ample room for five, including generous headroom of up to 39.9 inches and passenger volume of up to 104.1 cu-ft. The comfort provided by these interior dimensions is accomplished in concert with an aerodynamically efficient body design. The 2015 CR-V rides on the same 103.1-inch wheelbase as the previous model but is 1.1 inches longer at 178.3 inches. Width is the same as the 2014 CR-V, at 71.6 inches, but track is slightly wider for all trims, beginning with 62.1 inches front/62.2 inches rear for the LX FWD. Height remains the same at 64.7 inches for the FWD models and 65.1 for AWD models.

Noise mitigation
Many changes made to the 2015 CR-V’s body helped reduce noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) by increasing body rigidity. Door sealing was also improved to reduce noise intrusion. The door seal thickness was doubled. To further absorb sound and insulate the cabin, the coverage and thickness of sound-absorbing material was increased, including a full-coverage sound insulating carpet. The torque-rod engine mount system helps to reduce idle vibration and mid- and high-frequency engine noise during acceleration. These efforts result in superior cruising quietness.

2015 Honda CR-V - Chassis

Overview
To further improve the 2015 CR-V’s ride and handling characteristics, several upgrades were made to the chassis. These changes include suspension component design changes and tuning refinements, a modified steering ratio, a new front subframe and engine mounts, larger wheel options and improved brakes. Newly-designed aluminum alloy wheels are 0.5 inches wider on both the 17-inch and new 18-inch diameter wheels.

Key New Chassis Features

  • Suspension design and tuning improvements
  • New front subframe and engine mounts
  • Quicker steering ratio
  • Increased tread width
  • New 18-inch aluminum alloy wheel (Touring trim)
  • Increased wheel width for 17/18-inch wheels

Front MacPherson Strut Suspension
The front suspension is specially designed and tuned for compact packaging, supple ride comfort and the long wheel travel and ruggedness necessary to navigate harsh roads, with many improvements made for the 2015 CR-V. Primary components of the front MacPherson strut suspension are a subframe-attached lower control arm that was redesigned for the 2015 and a heavy-duty wheel hub connected to the shock absorber and coil spring assembly. Both the spring and damper receive new settings for better ride and handling characteristics. The damper and coil spring assembly acts as one unit and is attached to the wheel hub at its base and a reinforced portion of the vehicle body at its top. The geometry of the wheel hub, or knuckle, was changed to increase tread width by 15 mm and decrease camber by 0.5 degrees. The stabilizer bar and bushings were also changed for 2015 with new settings.

The front suspension geometry incorporates a high caster angle along with inversely wound springs for confident straight-line tracking and excellent toe-control dynamics for precise and responsive steering. When cornering, the inner wheel is designed to remain close to perpendicular (relative to the ground plane) throughout a wide range of travel, which improves tire adhesion. To improve ride comfort, the compliance angle on the lower control arm is tuned to transmit minimal harshness. Specially tuned bushings and precisely calibrated suspension geometry ensure optimal ride, handling and steering feel in a wide variety of road conditions.

Rear Multi-Link Suspension
The CR-V is equipped with a rear multi-link torsion-beam suspension that helps provide a smoother ride, improved handling and additional cargo space. The spring, damper, stabilizer bar and bushing settings of the 2015 CR-V are revised to improve ride and handling. The dynamics offered by the three-link suspension ensure a high level of stability under cornering and braking.

The rear independent multi-link suspension system with aluminum knuckle fits compactly underneath the rear seating and storage areas while providing excellent ride and handling characteristics, with low NVH. For 2015, the knuckle’s geometry was changed to increase tread width by 15 mm and decrease camber by 0.5 degrees.

The rear suspension trailing arm stiffness was increased for 2015; the arms continue to use large-diameter bushings to reduce harshness and improve ride comfort. Front and rear stays increase the subframe mounting point rigidity, to the benefit of stability and steering feel.

Front Subframe
The 2015 CR-V has a new front subframe, engine mounts and exhaust pipe to accommodate the new engine and transmission.

Steering
To provide a high-quality steering feel, the 2015 CR-V incorporates an Electric Power Steering (EPS) system. EPS is a sophisticated electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system with an electric motor installed concentrically around the steering rack. The system responds instantly to steering input and automatically changes the amount of power assist appropriate to the vehicle’s speed. To control the level of assist the Powertrain Control Module receives signals from a speed sensor and, coupled with a steering sensor for torque and rotation, then calculates the optimal amount of assist and sends a signal to the electric motor.

When compared to the operation of a conventional hydraulic pump power steering system, the CR-V’s simpler and lightweight EPS increases efficiency because it does not draw continuous power directly from the engine. Other advantages of electric power-assisted steering include its simplicity and compactness (no hydraulic system is needed to power it) and its lower power consumption, which helps improve fuel efficiency.

The steering ratio on all CR-V models was modified from 16.7:1 to 15.59:1 resulting in 2.94 turns lock-to-lock (previously 3.2) and a curb-to-curb turning diameter of 37.5 ft. for front-wheel drive versions and 36.9 ft. for all-wheel drive versions. All 2015 CR-V models have a tilt-and-telescope steering wheel.

A driver assistive technology that works with the CR-V’s EPS is Motion-Adaptive EPS. The system uses vehicle speed and steering angle data and works with Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist® (VSA®)1 to detect instability in slippery road conditions during cornering and under braking and automatically initiates steering force that prompts the driver to steer in the correct direction. For more information see the Safety and Driver Assistance section.

4-Wheel Disc Brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
All CR-V models are equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes (front ventilated disc and rear solid disc) for confident braking. The system incorporates 4-channel ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist as standard equipment. An upgraded power brake booster with increased servo ratio (from 8.0 to 9.5) offers a solid feel with optimized pedal rigidity and pedal effort decreased by 6 percent. The ventilated front disc brakes are 11.7 inches in diameter on FWD models and 11.8 inches on AWD models, and the solid rear disc brakes are 12.0 inches in diameter.

The 4-channel ABS independently modulates braking power at each wheel to help the driver retain steering control during heavy braking. EBD automatically optimizes braking force between the front and rear wheels, helping the CR-V stop in the shortest distance possible, regardless of the number of passengers or amount of cargo that it is carrying. Brake Assist can recognize emergency braking situations and almost instantly applies added braking force when appropriate. The CR-V’s braking system also incorporates Hill Start Assist that helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when starting out on a hill. For more information about Hill Start Assist see the Safety and Driver Assistance section.

Wheels and Tires
The new CR-V Touring trim receives larger 18x7-inch aluminum alloy wheels shod with 225/60 R18 all-season tires. EX and EX-L models are equipped with 225/65 R17 all-season tires mounted on larger 17x7-inch aluminum alloy wheels, 0.5 inches wider than the wheels on the 2014 model. The CR-V LX is equipped with 215/70 R16 all-season tires on 16x6.5-inch steel wheels. All CR-Vs include a space- and weight-saving 165/80 D17 spare tire mounted on a steel wheel. The spare is located in the trunk under the carpeted floor.

Towing
When equipped with a Honda dealer-installed accessory towing package, the new 2015 CR-V can tow up to 1,500 pounds. The available towing package includes a Class II hitch, towing kit, ATF cooler and wiring harness.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure
The 2015 CR-V utilizes the next generation of Honda’s Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure technology to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions, including small overlap crash performance. The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash. Additionally, ACE helps minimize the potential for under-ride or over-ride situations that can happen during head-on or offset frontal impacts with a larger or smaller vehicle. For more information on the ACE body structure, see the Body section.

Pedestrian Injury Mitigation Design
Structures in the front of the 2015 CR-V are designed to help absorb energy in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Research by Honda shows that the following features can dramatically improve a pedestrian's chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle.
Specific pedestrian injury mitigation features include:

  • The hood is designed to deform if contact is made with either an adult or a child pedestrian
  • Sufficient clearance exists between the hood and hard engine parts
  • The windshield base has a unique section structure for efficient impact energy absorption
  • Energy-absorbing fender mounts and supports
  • Deformable windshield wiper pivots
  • Deformable hood hinges

Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control
Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)6 is an Electronic Stability Control system that works in conjunction with the CR-V's Drive-by-Wire™ throttle and its 4-channel ABS systems to enhance control capability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking, cornering or when the driver makes a sudden maneuver. VSA functions by applying brake force to one or more wheels independently while also managing the throttle, ignition and fuel systems to help the vehicle maintain the driver's intended path of travel.

The VSA system constantly analyzes data from sensors that monitor wheel and vehicle speed, steering input, lateral G forces and yaw rate. It compares the driver's control inputs with the vehicle's actual response. Whenever the actual response falls outside of a predetermined acceptable range, VSA intervenes with a corrective action. For instance, if VSA detects an oversteer condition, the system may apply braking force to the outside front and rear wheels to counteract the unintended yawing effect. In the event of understeer, VSA may apply braking to the inside rear wheel while reducing engine power to help return the vehicle to its intended course.

VSA also provides a limited-slip differential effect for the front wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction. VSA is calibrated to function in a near-transparent manner, and in many cases a driver will not even be aware of its operation. However, anytime the system is enhancing vehicle stability, an indicator light flashes in the instrument cluster. While the driver can deactivate the VSA stability enhancement and traction-control functions via a switch on the instrument panel, ABS remains fully operational at all times.

Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS)
Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) is standard on all 2015 CR-V models. The system incorporates driving stability technology that initiates steering inputs that prompt the driver to steer in the correct direction during cornering and in slippery road conditions. Using vehicle speed and steering angle data, Motion-Adaptive EPS works with Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) and Electric Power Steering to detect instability in slippery road conditions both during cornering and under braking and automatically initiates steering inputs aimed at prompting the driver to steer in the correct direction. This advanced technology supports the driver's action in operating the vehicle more safely and comfortably.

Two examples of how Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) functions in conjunction with VSA are:

Stabilizes Vehicle Under Braking
This function corrects the driver’s steering input to reduce vehicle instability when the driver is braking hard on road surfaces with different friction coefficients (such as pavement that is only partially covered with dirt or snow).

Mitigates Understeer and Oversteer
To mitigate potential understeer or oversteer situations, the system corrects the steering inputs to help the driver trace the curve.

Brake Assist
A function of the VSA® system, the Brake Assist feature recognizes emergency braking situations and almost instantly applies added braking force. This Brake Assist feature is controlled by a special logic in the system that evaluates the pedal application rate and force to recognize a panic stop situation. At that point, the VSA modulator pump increases braking pressure while the pedal is still being pressed to ensure maximum stopping force, an action that helps shorten braking distance as much as possible.

Advanced 4-Channel ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution
The CR-V is fitted with 4-wheel disc brakes that have vented front rotors and solid rear rotors. The ABS system also incorporates Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) circuitry that automatically proportions force based on the vehicle's weight distribution. For more information see the Chassis section.

Dual-Stage, Multiple-Threshold Front Airbags
Both the driver and front passenger are protected by advanced front airbags (SRS) that incorporate dual-stage and multiple-threshold activation technology. One or both of these airbags will be deployed only in the event of a sufficient frontal impact. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seatbelt usage and/or other factors. Like other Honda vehicles, the driver's front airbag is located in the steering wheel while the passenger airbag is located on the top of the dash. When deployed, the passenger airbag inflates upward and then rearward to maximize its protective potential while reducing the likelihood of injuries caused by airbag deployment.

Driver and Front Passenger SmartVent® Side Airbags
Side airbags mounted in the outboard area of each front seatback are designed to help provide pelvic and thorax protection for the drive and front passenger in the event of a severe side impact. In the CR-V, a revised side airbag design allows the side airbags to deploy in a manner that mitigates the risk of injury to a smaller seat occupant. This advancement eliminates the need for the previous-generation CR-V’s passenger side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS).

Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensor
All outboard seating positions are protected by side curtain airbags with rollover sensor system, which is standard equipment. In the event of a severe side impact, the side curtain airbags deploy from modules in the roof, providing a significant level of head protection in the window area. In the unlikely event of a rollover, a roll-rate sensor, along with multiple G sensors determine the rate of roll and deploy the side curtain airbags accordingly. Like the other airbag systems in the vehicle, the side curtain system utilizes sensors to determine the most appropriate timing of airbag deployment.

To provide the optimal level of protection for occupants, testing was performed to determine the most appropriate timing and rate of deployment in the unlikely event of a rollover. The system uses algorithms to continually evaluate the situation and determines whether a rollover is imminent. The roll-rate sensor and multiple G sensors (accelerometers) determine the "scenario" and calculate the angle of roll and the speed of the vehicle in order to deploy the airbags at the correct point for optimum protection. In the case of a rollover, the side curtain airbags on both sides of the vehicle will deploy. However, in the event of a sufficient side impact that does not result in a rollover, only the airbags on the impacted side of the vehicle will deploy. The airbag maintains full inflation for approximately three seconds after inflation to allow for the increased duration of a rollover accident.

Seatbelts
Three-point seatbelts are standard for all seating positions. The front seatbelts are equipped with automatic tensioners and load limiters to help minimize injury potential in a frontal collision. When an impact occurs, the automatic tensioner tightens the seatbelt (shoulder and lap) to help hold the seat occupant firmly in position. Each front seatbelt retractor incorporates a load limiter that works in conjunction with the automatic tensioner. The load limiter functions by permitting a small amount of controlled seatbelt slack shortly after the automatic tensioner is activated to limit the peak restraining forces and thereby reducing the potential of serious injury. The front seatbelts also feature adjustable-height shoulder anchors. To help increase seat-belt usage, a reminder for the driver and front passenger has been incorporated into the instrument cluster. After starting the vehicle, a weight sensor detects whether the front passenger seat is occupied. If the driver or front passenger has not already fastened the seat belt, an icon in the cluster illuminates and a chime sounds as a reminder to do so.

Whiplash Mitigation Front Seat Design
Both of the front seats are designed to help mitigate the severity of neck injuries in the event of a rear impact. The seats have a “soft” design, accomplished by using greater spring range settings in both the seatback and seat bottom cushions. In the event of a rear crash, this design allows the seat to more evenly disperse rear impact forces against the occupant as the seatback cushion compresses relative to the occupant’s head. The seatback springs are optimized so that in a rear crash, when the seatback is pushed forward into the occupant, the seat will more equally absorb the occupant’s mass in manner that can minimize the severity of a whiplash injury.

Adjustable Head Restraints for All Seating Positions
The front and rear seats feature individually adjustable head restraints for all passenger seating positions. All rear head restraints comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) for rear passenger head restraints.

Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH)
Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH) provide a simple and convenient method to install compatible child safety seats in a vehicle. The rear outboard seating positions are fitted with dedicated LATCH attachment points. The LATCH system features built-in, ready-to-use anchors and tethers allowing compatible child safety seats to be installed without using the vehicle's seat belt system. In addition, the rear center seating position features top tether anchors that can be used to secure a single child safety seat. The ability to choose which location works best for individual needs can help families more conveniently maximize interior space.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
The CR-V is fitted with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)7 that alerts a driver whenever the air pressure in one or more of the vehicle's tires decreases significantly below the recommended level. Monitoring the rolling radius and rotational characteristics of each wheel and tire while the CR-V is being driven, the TPMS transmits information on tire air pressure to the ECU. When the pressure in one or more tires drops to a potentially critical level, it causes a low tire-pressure indicator (located in the instrument cluster or in the i-MID) to illuminate.

Hill Start Assist
The Hill Start Assist function helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when the driver switches from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal while the vehicle is stopped on a hill. Hill Start Assist automatically activates when the vehicle senses a certain incline and is fully stopped in any forward or reverse gear. The system uses a longitudinal G-sensor along with a wheel speed sensor and steering angle sensor to control the hydraulic brake modulator. Hill Start Assist, when activated, will release the brakes when the driver depresses the throttle.

Honda Sensing™
Honda Sensing™ is a suite of safety and driver assistive features available on the 2015 Honda CR-V Touring that includes Honda LaneWatch™, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

Honda LaneWatch™
New to the CR-V, the EX, EX-L and Touring trims include Honda’s LaneWatch™5 display that uses a camera located at the bottom the passenger-side exterior mirror to display a wide-angle view of the passenger side roadway on the Display Audio screen. The image appears when the right turn signal is activated, or when a button on the end of the turn signal stalk is pressed.

The typical field of view for a passenger-side mirror is approximately 18 to 22 degrees, but the LaneWatch™ display field-of-view is about four times greater, or approximately 80 degrees. The system helps the driver to see traffic, pedestrians or objects in the vehicle’s blind spot. To help make judging distance easier, three reference lines are shown. Drivers should visually confirm roadway conditions prior to changing lanes.

LaneWatch™ can be customized to suit the driver’s preferences. Turn-signal activation of the LaneWatch™ system can be switched on or off, as can the three on-screen reference lines. Screen brightness, contrast and black level are also adjustable.

Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
On the CR-V Touring trim, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) uses a Millimeter Wave Radar unit located behind the front grille and a Monocular Camera mounted at the upper portion of the windshield to detect vehicles and pedestrians ahead and to determine whether a collision is imminent. If the FCW system detects a vehicle or pedestrian in front of the CR-V and then determines that a collision may occur (due to a speed differential between the CR-V and the object), it will trigger a “BRAKE” message on the Multi-Information Display (MID) and an audible alert.

Drivers may adjust the distance at which FCW alerts occur and may choose between “Long,” “Normal,” or “Short.” Drivers may also select “Off” to disable the FCW system entirely.

Note that the FCW system cannot detect all objects ahead; accuracy will vary based on weather, speed and other factors.

Next-Generation Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™)
Included in the CR-V Touring, the new next-generation Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) is one of the most sophisticated driver-assistive technologies available. Integrated with FCW, the systems’ Millimeter Wave Radar unit and Monocular Camera scan traffic conditions ahead of the CR-V.

When the system detects a potential collision, FCW provides visual and audible alerts to prompt the driver to take corrective actions. The visual alert appears on the Multi-Information Display (MID). CMBS takes emergency autonomous braking action to help reduce vehicle speed and eventual collision forces, and therefore to help reduce the severity of a collision if drivers don’t take corrective action on their own.

Due to the effectiveness of its sensing capabilities, the CMBS on the CR-V can recognize shapes and differentiate between a vehicle and a pedestrian, warning the driver in each case. A Millimeter Wave Radar unit located behind the front grille and a Monocular Camera mounted at the upper portion of the windshield is used to detect vehicles and pedestrians. The radar unit and camera work simultaneously and cooperatively to control the VSA modulator, which initiates any required braking.

It is important to note that CMBS cannot detect all objects ahead, nor is it intended to replace the driver’s assessment of traffic conditions and control of the vehicle. The driver must intervene in certain situations, and must always be attentive when using the system. Although in many cases CMBS will stop the car, it is not intended to apply enough braking force to prevent all collisions. Based on the conditions, the system also may not perform all visual- and audible-alert stages, and may instead automatically engage the brakes if the system deems it necessary.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
The CR-V Touring trim also includes Lane Departure Warning (LDW), which is designed to alert the driver if the vehicle is leaving a detected lane without the turn signal being activated. The system functions at speeds from 45 to 90 mph on straight or slightly curved roads, alerting the driver of deviations from a detected lane. The LDW system utilizes the same upper front windshield camera used for CMBS® and LKAS.

If the vehicle begins to move out of a detected lane without the turn signal activated, LDW illuminates a Lane Departure message on the Multi-Information Display (MID) and sounds an audible warning, advising the driver to take appropriate action. The system can be activated and deactivated by pressing the LDW button located on the instrument panel, to the left of the steering column.

There are certain conditions under which the system may not engage or operate, including inclement weather (e.g., snow, ice or heavy rain) and extreme cabin heat (due to operability of the camera). The system will automatically suspend operation when the brakes are applied or the turn signals are used. LDW may not detect all lane markings or lane departures; accuracy will vary based on weather, speed and road condition. The driver remains responsible for safely operating the vehicle.

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
The Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) on the CR-V Touring trim provides a less stressful driving experience by reducing steering correction movements and driving effort on the highway. LKAS uses a camera to read lane markings and uses the Electric Power Steering to assist the driver in maintaining their position within the lane.

Designed for the U.S. road structure, the system uses a Monocular Camera mounted on the upper portion of the windshield to identify painted lanes, Botts’ Dots and Cat Eye markers at speeds between 45 mph and 90 mph. When LKAS senses that the driver is drifting from the middle of a detected lane, the system generates corrective steering torque to assist the driver in maintaining lane position.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
Included in the CR-V Touring trim, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) allows the driver to set a desired speed and following interval from the vehicle ahead, allowing the use of cruise control in light traffic conditions. This significantly reduces the driver stress of driving in traffic. The system uses the Millimeter Wave Radar and Monocular Camera to continually track the distance to the vehicle ahead, and then adjusts the CR-V’s speed to maintain the set following interval. A short, medium, long, or extra-long interval can be selected.  When required, the CR-V autonomously brakes using the Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) modulator. ACC operates in the following ways in the listed circumstances:

A preceding vehicle is detected in the lane ahead — decelerates automatically, if required, and then controls the following distance.

Another vehicle merges in between the CR-V and the preceding vehicle — automatically switches “targets” to the nearest preceding vehicle.

The preceding vehicle exits the lane — ACC system continues at cruise-control speed previously selected by driver (25 to 90 mph).

A Multi Information Display (MID) message and audible warning alert the driver when the ACC function is activated.

Expanded View Driver’s Mirror
All CR-V models are equipped with the Expanded View Driver’s Mirror that increases the driver's field of vision by 4.2 degrees to provide a better view of objects to the back and side of the vehicle. The Expanded-View Driver’s Mirror uses a flat reflective plane on the inner portion of the mirror closest to the door, while the outer portion of the mirror uses a convex element to provide a broader field of view.

Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Guidelines
All 2015 CR-V models include a multi-angle rearview camera8, viewable on the LX trim’s i-MID color LCD screen and on the EX, EX-L and Touring trims’ 7-inch Display Audio. The camera can show a top, normal or wide rear view when the transmission is in Reverse. LX models feature static guidelines that help drivers gauge how close they are to an object, while EX and higher grades have dynamic guidelines that project the vehicle’s future path based on the driver’s steering wheel inputs.

2015 Honda CR-V - Exterior

Overview
With an all-new powertrain that delivers more torque, better performance and more refinement, plus available new premium features, the 2015 CR-V is both more ruggedly athletic and smarter. These themes are expressed in the compact SUV’s exterior styling with design changes to the front and rear, the mirrors and wheels. The overall impression these changes provide is aggressive and bold with a wide, solid and planted look, accentuated by premium details and features for a unique Honda style. Available exterior features include brilliant LED daytime running lights (DRL), LaneWatch™1 and distinctive 18-inch alloy wheels. Included in the changes is a power tailgate on the new Touring trim, a first for the CR-V.

Key New Exterior Features

  • Newly designed front fascia including grille, headlights, bumper and skid plate
  • New rear fascia design with changed license garnish, fascia sides and bumper
  • Available LED daytime running lights
  • Available projector beam low beam headlight
  • Two new alloy wheels designs, include new available 18-inch wheel
  • Upgraded mirror design with available heater and integrated turn signal
  • Power tailgate – first time available on CR-V
  • Available Smart Entry (see Comfort and Convenience section)

Exterior Styling
The bold front fascia’s unified design blends the solid grill and upper air intake with the four-lamp, multi-reflector halogen headlight arrays in a smart upward sweep. This dynamic grill shape is inverted below by the aggressive-looking lower air intake/skid plate design, in contrasting silver, and fog light pods to create a deep, multi-dimensional look. Commanding horizontal lines at the rear and the contrasting silver colored skid plate design continue the wide, planted look of the new CR-V. The 2015 CR-V’s body retains the aerodynamic efficiencies of the previous version, with numerous design elements such as a long roofline and integrated rear spoiler that assist in producing a low coefficient of drag. The EX-L and Touring trims are equipped with roof rails that start at the A-pillars and sweep along the roofline toward the rear end of the vehicle (available as an accessory on CR-V LX and EX). These rails provide an attachment point for an accessory rack, while also providing a dramatic visual element. The rails are fully functional, with three anchor points per side. The Touring trim also receives special badging with black debossing on a chrome background.

Wheels
Both the 17-inch wheels, on EX and EX-L trims, and the 18-inch Touring trim wheels—both aluminum alloy—have offset multi-spoke aero designs that imply movement even at a standstill and accentuate their large diameter. The angular cast-surface of the 17-inch wheels sport a silver monotone color, while the 18-inch alloy wheels have a sharp-cut style with a gloss black and brush aluminum-like finish. Both the 17- and 18-inch wheels are 7 inches wide, 0.5 inches wider than the previous CR-V’s 17-inch wheels. The LX model rides on 16-inch, five-spoke steel wheels.

Door Design
When the doors are open, the side-sill garnish covering the rocker panel creates a more direct pathway to the ground when entering or exiting the vehicle. This design creates a lower step-over distance for better comfort and a reduction in the likelihood of leg contact with the side of the vehicle.

Lights
Distinctive multi-reflector halogen headlights grace the 2015 CR-V. On EX and higher trims, the headlight arrays include a dramatic and premium-looking Light Emitting Diode (LED) daytime running light (DRL) strip. For the LX trim, the halogen low beams serve double-duty as the DRL. The top-of-the-line Touring trim has multi-reflector and projector headlights, together with LED DRLs for a brilliant and sophisticated look. All headlights include an auto-off feature with EX and above trims also including auto-on capability. Fog lights are included on EX and above trims. The CR-V’S taillight array features incandescent taillights and outboard brake lights, and attention-grabbing LED illumination for the Center High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL) that is embedded in the rear spoiler.

Side Mirrors
Newly-designed power side mirrors have a complementary horizontal design and are aerodynamically optimized to reduce wind noise and minimize turbulence. Side mirror housings on the CR-V LX model are black and those on the EX and above trims have a body-colored upper and black lower. The Expanded View Driver’s Mirror is standard with passenger side Honda LaneWatch™ included on EX and above trims. The CR-V EX-L and Touring trims add heated side mirrors and the Touring trim also adds integrated turn indicators. The side mirrors can be manually folded in for greater convenience in tight parking situations. For more information on the Expanded View Driver’s Mirror and Honda LaneWatch™, see the Safety and Driver Assistance section.

Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Guidelines
All CR-V’s include a multi-angle rearview camera2, visible on the intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) on the LX model and on the 7-inch Display Audio screen on all other grades. The camera can show a top view, 130-degree view or 180-degree rear view when the transmission is in Reverse. The camera is located just above the license plate on the tailgate. Guidelines help drivers gauge how close they are to an object. The dotted line indicates the closest distance that the tailgate can be opened. On EX and above trims, dynamic guidelines indicate the projected vehicle path based on steering wheel position.

Visibility and Glass
The 2015 CR-V provides superior outward visibility having excellent front and rear sight lines for the driver, including a commanding eye point level and a short forward invisible length (the distance a driver needs to look to see the ground in front of the vehicle). The CR-V’s windshield and all windows are made with UV-resistant glass that filters UV light and results in less interior fade over time, lower cabin temperatures on hot days, and more efficient interior cooling. On EX and above trims, the rear windows feature dark-tint privacy glass.

Power Windows
Power windows, with an auto-up/down driver’s window, are standard on all CR-V models. Individual controls are located on the armrests. Pressing a master switch on the driver’s control panel deactivate the individual controls for the front and rear passengers.

One-Touch Power Moonroof with Tilt Feature
The CR-V EX, EX-L and Touring trims have a one-touch power moonroof with tilt feature that will fully open or close with a single touch of the switch. The moonroof mechanism was purposely designed to provide ample headroom. The moonroof has a sliding sunshade that opens with the roof and can be closed to block sunlight. To tilt or slide the moonroof, the driver or front passenger needs only to fully press the ceiling-mounted switch once (instead of pressing and holding it for several seconds). The moonroof fully opens or closes automatically. However, if the operator wishes to only partially open or close the moonroof (such as to achieve partial ventilation), a lighter touch yields fully manual control. The moonroof can also tilt to provide ventilation. An auto-reverse feature is built in, helping to ensure that the moonroof will not forcefully close if someone's hand or arm is positioned in the path of the glass. If an obstruction is detected, the moonroof mechanism will reopen the moonroof.

Tailgate
For the first time on a CR-V, the 2015 model includes the convenience of an available power tailgate. On the CR-V Touring trim, the tailgate can be effortlessly opened and closed by pressing buttons in the vehicle or on the remote smart fob. An interior power tailgate "open/close" button is located on the front console to the left of the steering wheel and a "close" button is positioned on the underside of the tailgate that is accessible with the tailgate open. The remote smart fob also has an "open/close" button. A manual exterior "open" button is located under the tailgate handle. The tailgate can be manually closed at any time during open or close operation. As a safety feature, the tailgate has an auto-detection system that will reverse direction if it detects an obstruction (in the form of resistance against the tailgate drive motor). The power tailgate’s drive unit is located within the left D-pillar.

On the CR-V LX, EX, and EX-L trims, the manual tailgate features twin gas-charged hydraulic struts that ease opening and a single pull-down handle located on the right side. The tailgate can be unlocked with the remote or by pressing a button inside the driver’s door.

The tailgate has a 360-degree gasket for a tight seal against the intrusion of water, dirt and wind noise. In addition, the rear aperture of the CR-V body is specially reinforced to strengthen the tailgate opening, which is the largest opening on the vehicle body. This increased rigidity at this critical location improves ride and handling, as well as interior quietness. The tailgate automatically locks whenever the CR-V is locked.

Windshield Wipers
Having the 2015 CR-V’s windshield wipers positioned behind and below the rear edge of the hood line keeps them below the driver’s normal sightline for improved forward visibility. In addition, the wipers are positioned out of the airflow over the hood to reduce turbulence that can contribute to aerodynamic drag and interior noise. For pedestrian safety, the wiper arm pivots are deformable. (Please see Safety section for more information.) A rear windshield wiper is also included as standard equipment.

The front windshield wipers have two speeds with intermittent and automatic intermittent operation available. The rear wipers have on and intermittent operation as standard.

Operation of the windshield wipers is intuitively simple using the stalk positioned next to the steering wheel; pushing the stalk up or down operates the front windshield wipers, and twisting the outside part of the stalk operates the rear windshield wiper.

Interior Styling
Added to the CR-V’s already sophisticated styling is chrome and bright silver accents that highlight the complimentary lines of the interior, depending upon grade. Chrome plating or chrome trim around such items as the steering wheel-mounted controls, vent knobs and door levers, on EX and above grades, add a more luxurious look. Bright silver accents around console panels, vents and other surfaces add visual contrast and a high-tech look. On the LX and EX trims, the sweeping full-length console garnish is in deep bright silver, with EX-L and Touring grades getting a premium two-tone wood grain treatment with chrome accent trim. Adding to the contrast of the interior’s high-grade surfaces and stylish lines are the gray and beige color schemes that feature light-colored fabric against black accents, such as on the center console and door armrests. Seat trim and door panel materials have been upgraded with a smooth embossed textured fabric and upscale perforated leather that exude a well-tailored, high quality feel. Standard on all trims is the newly designed configurable center console that not only adds storage versatility but more comfort with its broad, sliding armrest, while also conveying a more luxurious appearance. On EX and above grades, the inclusion of the intuitive 7-inch Display Audio adds technological sophistication.

Interior Colors
For 2015 the CR-V retains the three interior colors of black, gray and beige from the previous model. To provide more interior contrast on gray and beige options, the fabric on the seats and doors is colored differently than the other surfaces.

Interior Packaging Concept
The CR-V has always offered a unique combination of virtues that continue to define the compact SUV segment: relatively small exterior dimensions for easy urban maneuvering, excellent fuel efficiency, and a roomy, accommodating interior that offers great cargo carrying versatility. The 2015 CR-V carries on in that same tradition with an interior that has a spacious feel, lots of storage space and Easy Fold-Down 60/40 Split Rear Seat that combines with a low lift-in and load floor to provide cargo loading convenience.

Driver Interface
The “smart interface” design of the 2015 CR-V’s interior means instruments and controls are oriented to the driver for quick readability and easy, natural access. Key design features include large analog instrumentation complemented with an Information Display on the LX trim or Multi-Information Display (MID) on EX and above trims. The Information Display or MID are positioned in the interior of the analog speedometer. A color “intelligent” Multi-Information Display (i-MID) placed high in the central part of the instrument panel within the driver’s line of sight is included on all trims. CR-V EX and above trims feature the 7-inch touchscreen Display Audio that is conveniently positioned for either the driver or front passenger to control. The final element of the CR-V’s smart interface approach is its steering wheel mounted controls. By allowing the driver to operate a range of features without taking their hands off the wheel, distraction potential can be reduced in certain situations. For more information see the Audio and Telematics section. See the Audio and Telematics section for more information about the Information Display, MID, i-MID and Display Audio.

Steering Wheel-Mounted Controls
All CR-Vs include multiple sets of steering wheel-mounted controls, including intuitive and easy-to-operate radial controls. Depending upon trim level, up to four sets of buttons allow convenient and easy operation of the MID, i-MID, Display Audio and features such as the audio system, Bluetooth®2 HandsFreeLink® and navigation system.

Instrumentation
The CR-V uses clean and simple analog instrumentation with a sophisticated and technical appearance. The centrally positioned speedometer is the largest feature on the instrument panel. It is complemented by a central LED Multi-Information Display (MID) screen that is controlled using the Select/Reset knob positioned just above and to the right of the speedometer. The display provides a range of information, trip computer functions and safety and driver-assistive indicators.

Progressive Instrument Illumination
The CR-V's instrumentation uses a progressive illumination sequence when the driver enters the vehicle. When the door is opened, the instrumentation is illuminated at 10 percent of its full brightness. When the key is put in the ignition (encircled with an illuminated ring) or when the push-button start button is depressed, the instrument illumination ramps up to 100 percent. When the ignition is turned on, the illuminated instrument needles and enunciator lights come on, indicating all systems are go.

Interior Storage
To maximize convenience and utility, the CR-V’s interior has a wide range of storage features including the newly designed center console. The generously sized front console now has four distinct compartments. The front section of the console has three open sections, all with a non-slip rubberized material to help keep items in place. A smaller section to the front left is perfect for items such as loose change or a parking stub. A longer, shallow section to the rear left nicely fits a wallet or smart phone and is placed so a charger lead will reach from the power outlet in the covered rear compartment. A long and deeper section to the right of the open area includes two partitions that can be rotated or removed, allowing for multiple compartment configurations, including a mode for holding two beverage containers of various diameters, and a mode for storing a tablet PC. The rear compartment is covered by a wide, flip-up and sliding armrest with 2.4 inches of fore-aft travel. The covered compartment includes a 12-volt power outlet and a USB3 port; a second USB port is included on EX and above trims. An additional power outlet is located at the front of the console. The front of the covered compartment has cable pass-throughs for charging/audio cables. Compartments in each door panel provide additional space for small items and also include bottle holders. In the rear seating area, a flip-down center armrest includes two beverage holders.

Cargo Capability
The CR-V is designed to offer cargo capability to suit the needs of active owners. The CR-V has 35.3 cubic ft. of cargo space behind the rear seats and a volume of 70.9 cu-ft. with the rear seats down. For easy loading, the CR-V has a lift-in height that is among the lowest in the class. For maximum cargo capacity, the Easy Fold-Down 60/40 Split Rear Seat can be quickly lowered, creating a nearly flat load floor. The load area is sized to accept large suitcases stored vertically, four golf bags or a stroller (rear seats upright), or two mountain bikes (rear seats folded).

A generously sized elastic storage net and well is located on the left side of the cargo area for holding small items securely. In addition, four “D” rings for tying down cargo are located on the cargo area floor. The front “D” rings are chromed for an attractive finished appearance. The CR-V also includes a retractable cargo cover that can hide items stored in the cargo area behind the second-row seats. The cover and mechanism can be quickly removed and stowed on the floor. Located underneath the cargo floor is a temporary spare tire and vehicle jack.

Easy Fold-Down 60/40 Split Rear Seat
For superior rear passenger comfort and cargo carrying versatility, the CR-V has a One-Motion 60/40 Split Rear Seat. With supportive padding, reclining seatbacks and a flat floor with plenty of legroom, the backseat offers a high level of passenger comfort. But if cargo carrying is a priority, the seats can be quickly lowered to provide a large cargo deck. Each side of the split-folding seat is operated independently via an easily accessible release handle, one on each side of the cargo area. There is also a release strap for each seat that’s accessible from each rear door. A single pull on either the handle or strap stows the seat completely, by automatically tilting the seat base forward, lowering the outboard head restraint and folding the seatback forward. The process only takes seconds. To put the seats up, simply raise the backrest, flip up the head restraint and swing the seat base back into position.

2015 Honda CR-V - Comfort and Convenience

Overview
With its roomy and versatile cabin that allows various configurations for spacious occupant accommodations, a large cargo capacity and lots of standard amenities, the CR-V belies its compact external dimensions. For 2015, Honda’s benchmark compact SUV gets even better, with multiple upgrades that increase driving enjoyment and ease. These changes and additions include such things as standard sliding sunvisors, heated front seats available at a lower trim level, and newly available features including a driver’s seat with two-position memory and a power tailgate.

Key New Comfort and Convenience Features

  • Introduction of available two-position memory driver’s seat
  • Available Smart Entry and Push Button Start
  • First CR-V application of sliding sunvisors
  • Configurable center console with sliding armrest (see Interior section)
  • Rear console ducts (see Interior section)
  • Available auto-dimming rearview mirror
  • Available HomeLink®1 Remote System
  • Available power tailgate (see Exterior section)

Front Seats
For 2015, the driver’s seat of the new CR-V Touring features a two-position memory capability. A power driver’s seat and heated front seats are now standard on the EX (previously standard on the upper-trim EX-L). The comfort-padded front seats include a wide surface with supportive side bolsters that give the seats a secure feel particularly when cornering. The driver’s seat height can be adjusted manually on the LX trim and is power-adjustable on EX and above trims. The CR-V’s front seats provide a car-like orientation but still with a commanding vantage point.

Smart Entry and Push Button Start/Stop
For the first time, the CR-V EX and above trims include the upscale convenience of the Smart Entry & Push Button Start/Stop system. The system simplifies approaching, entering and operating the CR-V – especially when the driver is carrying items. To gain entry to vehicle, the driver simply pulls one of the two front door handles while the remote in his or her possession.

Once the driver has opened the door and is seated, the driver simply pushes the START/STOP button positioned on the instrument panel while pressing the brake pedal to start the vehicle. Powertrain operation and certain electrical functions are ended when the START/STOP button is pressed again at the conclusion of the drive. After parking, a touch of the soft-touch lock button on either front door handle locks all doors and trunk to secure the car. Alternatively, a press of the LOCK button on the Smart Entry remote will also simultaneously lock all the doors and tailgate. The remote also includes a dedicated button that will unlock the tailgate only or will cause the power tailgate on the CR-V Touring trim to open. The Smart Entry system will not allow the transmitter fob to be locked in the interior of the CR-V. The LX trim CR-V retains the previous remote entry system.

Sliding Sunvisors
To provide more flexible shading from the sun, all CR-Vs now come standard with sliding sunvisors. The driver and front passenger sunvisors can now be moved 3.7 inches along their mounting shaft, a distance that provides perpendicular shade for the eyes even when the front seats are in their rear-most position.

Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror
New for the CR-V, the EX-L and Touring trims feature an electro chromatic interior rearview mirror that automatically dims during nighttime driving to reduce glare from the headlights of following vehicles.

HomeLink® Remote System
The CR-V Touring trim features a HomeLink® universal remote system that can be programmed with the codes of up to three devices, such as a garage-door opener or home security system.

Steering Wheel
The 2015 CR-V’s 3-spoke steering wheel features a wide range of manual tilt and telescoping adjustments to accommodate drivers of various sizes.

Climate Control
All CR-V models provide air conditioning as standard equipment. The front climate controls on the CR-V are mounted centrally on the instrument panel for easy accessibility and feature rotary knobs for temperature settings and fan control. Push buttons allow control of airflow through the various vents inside the vehicle (i.e. defrost, heater, split level, etc.). The CR-V LX and CR-V EX have a manual climate control system; the CR-V EX-L, EX-L Navi and Touring models features an automatic dual-zone system.

The CR-V’s micron air-filtration system is capable of filtering nearly 100 percent of particulates over 8 microns in size (the size of most pollen). It can also filter out approximately 40 percent of particulates down to 0.3 microns (about the size of diesel emissions). To improve cooling capacity, the high capacity condenser with integrated receiver drier runs the liquid refrigerant through a sub-cooling condenser, after the main condenser.

Maintenance Minder Display
All CR-V models have a Maintenance Minder system that tracks service-related items based on vehicle usage. Maintenance Minder information appears in the MID and i-MID displays.

ECON Mode
Every 2015 CR-V is equipped with a green ECON button to the left of the steering wheel. This button engages ECON mode, in which several operating characteristics of the vehicle are modified for enhancing fuel efficiency. The Drive-by-Wire throttle system provides more gradual response, and to save additional energy, the climate control’s upper fan speeds are lowered incrementally, and other climate control system characteristics are altered based on the conditions. See the Powertrain section for more information on ECON Mode.

Engine Immobilizer
Complementing the remote entry system is a standard engine-immobilizer system. A special electronically coded key prevents the car from being started-even if a mechanical duplicate of the key is used. A transponder, built into the key, signals the immobilizer control unit that the key is genuine. If the car is hot-wired, or an unauthorized key is used, the engine will not start.

Power Windows and Locks
Power windows are standard equipment on all CR-V models and include auto-up and -down operation on the driver’s window. Power locks are standard, and a customizable auto-locking feature can be configured using the i-MID and steering-wheel mounted controls. Remote entry is standard equipment on all CR-V models. The wave key design (LX trim) has an integrated transmitter in the handle with lock, unlock, trunk open and panic buttons.

2015 Honda CR-V - Audio and Telematics

Overview
The introduction of the 7-inch Display Audio capacitive touchscreen on EX and above models provides an intuitive and easy-to-use interface that lets the user swipe, tap and pinch–just like on a tablet computer or smartphone–to control the vehicle’s audio system, display settings and other advanced features with an intuitive interface for core functions. For audio, HondaLink™1 and available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™2, Display Audio provides familiar, intuitive controls with a modern look that compliments the CR-Vs interior. Also newly available for the 2015 CR-V is HondaLink™ Assist, which can help request emergency assistance for drivers when a compatible phone is paired through Bluetooth®3 HandsFreeLink®, and Siri Eyes Free Link with which iPhone® owners can direct Siri to perform a number of specific tasks while they keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.

Key New Audio and Telematics Features

  • Available 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen interface (EX and above trims)
  • HondaLink™ available on Display Audio equipped CR-Vs

Display Audio
New to the 2015 CR-V EX and above trims is Honda’s 7-inch touchscreen Display Audio. The intuitive and easy-to-use interface lets you swipe, tap and pinch–just like on a tablet computer or smartphone–to control the vehicle’s audio system, display settings and other advanced features. Icons resembling smartphone apps are displayed on the high-definition, capacitive touchscreen. Standard internet-sourced music and media options, such as Pandora®4 are built into the Display Audio interface5, with the ability to create personalized stations, tap to “like” songs, and view album artwork directly from the touchscreen. The EX-L with Navi and Touring models include the Display Audio with a fully integrated and fully featured Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with continuously updated traffic information.

Next Generation HondaLink
For the first time in a CR-V, the Display Audio system with next-generation HondaLink™ allows the customer's digital lifestyle to seamlessly integrate with the car and provides access to a world of cloud-based information. The all-new application-based platform connects customers to online content both inside and outside the car, all powered by their smartphones.

Four specialty HondaLink™ apps provide organization and are a gateway to additional online content, which are listed on the following page.

  • Connect App – Provides convenient access for many services including location searches, local weather, messaging, Maintenance Minder alerts, service scheduling by phone, and access to the Owners Guide. Users can tap for weather updates and store favorite destinations for quick routing with the Navigation app.
  • Navigation App – A cloud-based navigation app for purchase6 that includes 3D mapping and continuously updated traffic information. The app offers a variety of location search options including search by point of interest, text search, or previous locations. Routes can be pre-planned on a smartphone and will display on the vehicle's touchscreen. Turn-by-turn routing guidance is available through the vehicle's audio system as well.
  • Aha™ App – provides access to an extensive and diverse selection of audio content across multiple genres and demographics, plus featured new stations, Internet radio, podcasts, audiobooks, news, Twitter and Facebook updates and nearby location listings for restaurants, coffee houses, hotels, weather, parks, and gas stations. Users can tap to personalize stations or add favorites via smartphone or directly through the Display Audio interface.
  • Launcher App –Finds and organizes Honda-approved 3rd party apps so they can be quickly integrated into the Display Audio system. Approved apps can be found through the Launcher and shown on the Display Audio screen for easy access.

The connection between the system and the user’s smartphone is made through the USB7 interface and a new HDMI® interface. For iPhone 5, 5S and 5C, a HondaLink™ iOS cable kit is available for purchase through Honda dealers or online at hondanavi.com. The iOS cable kit includes an Apple Lightning digital AV adapter, an Apple Lightning-to-USB cable and an appropriate-length HDMI cable (Apple-approved). Consumer information and helpful tips regarding HondaLink™ can be found at hondalink.com.

HondaLink™ Assist
Another new feature integrated with HondaLink™ is HondaLink™ Assist, which can help request emergency assistance for drivers. If there is a cellular connection through a phone paired to the vehicle with Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® and an airbag deployment sensor is triggered by a collision, the system is designed to automatically attempt to notify an operator, report the car's current location, and allow you to talk directly to the operator. The operator can then contact emergency services if needed.

Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System With Voice Recognition and Honda HD Digital Traffic
Included on the CR-V EX-L Navi and Touring models, the integrated Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ uses GPS technology to provide drivers with turn-by-turn guidance to their chosen destination. The system adds the HD Digital Traffic feature, which alerts the driver to current traffic conditions and can display alternate routes around gridlock. It features expanded coverage including many surface streets within the U.S., allowing the driver to choose faster, less congested routes. HD Digital Traffic is subscription-free.

The navigation system can be controlled by voice or through the 7-inch electrostatic touchscreen Display Audio utilizing its tap, pinch and swipe functionality. The voice-activation system can respond to more casual command phrases that require less user familiarization, in addition to the previous capability of being able to understand spoken city and street names. For example, a voice request for "Radio 98.3 FM" can now be spoken in approximately a dozen different ways ranging from "change the radio station to 98.3" to "98.3 FM." This logic applies to audio functionality of the audio/information screen. The navigation system can also be controlled by voice with conventional navigation commands like, "Find nearest Chinese restaurant" or "find nearest ATM."

The audio system is automatically muted when the "Talk" button is pressed. The voice-recognition technology allows the driver to simply speak city and street names aloud, and the system responds by displaying the matches available in the database. Points of interest on the map—such as restaurants or grocery stores—can be displayed with brand logo icons or you can have the system provide turn-by-turn navigation, all by voice command. The large point-of-interest (POI) database includes telephone numbers that can be dialed by using the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system when the driver's cellular telephone is connected to the system.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System uses GPS in combination with detailed information from the vehicle's mapping system to pinpoint the vehicle's location and to provide a host of useful mapping and route guidance features. The antenna can utilize up to 12 satellites from a network of 24 global positioning satellites. If the antenna is obstructed by a tunnel, a parking garage or a tall building, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle so that the map information remains current and reliable. The vehicle clock is independently controlled by GPS data, so that when time zones are crossed while driving, the clock will automatically set itself to the local time.

Siri Eyes Free Integration
Adding another new premium feature, Display Audio integrates Apple's Siri Eyes Free. Users with compatible iPhones® will be able to operate Siri through familiar voice commands by pressing and holding the TALK button on the steering wheel when their iPhone is paired via Bluetooth®. Using Eyes Free mode, Siri takes hands-free functionality even further and helps to minimize potential distractions by keeping an iOS device's screen from lighting up.

Owners can direct Siri to perform a number of specific tasks while they keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.

  • Sending text messages and e-mails
  • Reading incoming text messages and emails
  • Setting up calendar entries, reminders, and alarms
  • Checking the weather
  • Turn-by-turn voice navigation (when the audio system is set to Bluetooth® Audio or iPod mode)
  • Sports scores and stock quotes

Multi-Information Display (MID)
The Multi-Information Display (MID) is located in the interior of the analog speedometer of all CR-V models. Depending upon trim, it shows the odometer, trip meter, engine oil life, maintenance service item codes and other gauges and information. The display is either controlled using the knob on the instrument screen or with the lower right-hand steering wheel buttons. The MID on the Touring trim is split with the lower third of the display dedicated to showing safety and driver assistive systems information.

Intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID)
All CR-V models include an intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID) that allows for convenient, line-of-sight access to vehicle information, audio track titles, personal wallpaper and more via simple steering wheel-mounted controls. Positioned in the upper center portion of the instrument panel, this bright, full-TFT LCD display is easy to see and interpret. The i-MID serves as an audio system display and features on-screen icons and prompts to make navigation through a range of screens intuitive using the left steering wheel controls. In addition to audio information, the i-MID also includes an SMS text messaging function and a Pandora® internet compatibility. It also displays fuel-economy information, as well as Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® information. Turn-by-turn navigation directions also appear on the i-MID on the CR-V EX-L Navi and Touring trims. User-support features include customizable settings and a customizable wallpaper display. Depending upon trim level, certain functions are shared with or taken over by the MID or Display Audio.

SMS Text Message Function
All CR-V models have a standard SMS Text Message function that can read incoming texts aloud over the audio system, and allow the driver to reply with any of six factory preset messages. The system works with SMS-capable cell phones that have an active data plan and the Message Access Profile (MAP), such as the Blackberry, Droid X and others. The iPhone 4 does not support this feature.

Once a compatible phone is paired with the CR-V’s Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system, the text messaging function is enabled. When the phone receives a text message, an alert appears on the i-MID or Display Audio. Using the audio system controls or Display Audio touchscreen, the driver can choose to have the message read aloud, can select among the preset reply choices, or can call the sender—all without touching the phone.

To help avoid driver distraction, the text of the incoming message is not displayed on screen unless the transmission is in Park.

Available factory preset text replies:

  • Talk to you later, I’m driving.
  • I’m on my way.
  • I’m running late.
  • OK
  • Yes
  • No

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®
The Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® interface is designed to offer hands-free operation for many Bluetooth®-enabled mobile telephones. Standard on all CR-V models, the system wirelessly connects the driver's cell phone to the vehicle’s audio system. This allows the driver to make or answer cell phone calls without removing hands from the steering wheel. The system is compatible with Bluetooth®-enabled cell phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP). A list of compatible phones can be found at handsfreelink.com or honda.com. HandsFreeLink® includes full manual control, auto import of phonebook and call history, a dedicated Phone button on the head unit and six speed dials linked to radio preset keys (except for models equipped with navigation system).

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® enables audio files to be played through the vehicle’s audio system wirelessly with a feature called Bluetooth® Audio. If an audio-compatible device is paired, it will be added as an auxiliary source on the i-MID’s audio screen and Display Audio (where included). This allows the Bluetooth® device’s media to be played wirelessly by the audio system. Mobile phone devices that support the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) 1.3 allow the display of metadata for artist, album and track name on the i-MID or Display Audio. The vehicle’s audio controls for “skip forward” and “skip backward” allow for navigation from track to track.

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® is designed for easy use. After the driver completes a simple one-time "pairing" process to link the cell phone with the vehicle, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® can communicate wirelessly and securely with the driver's cell phone when the phone is within about 33 feet of the vehicle. Once the driver enters the vehicle, the phone can be stored in a pocket, briefcase, purse or a storage bin inside the vehicle’s cabin as the call transfers information through the wireless telephone interface. Certain compatible cell phones can also transfer the cellular phonebook into the vehicle through the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system. After the cellular phonebook is transferred, calls can be made by making selections from the registered phonebook on the information screen.

Operational features include:

  • Phone numbers of incoming calls are displayed on the i-MID or Display Audio
  • Pressing the steering wheel-mounted "Pick up" button answers the call and mutes the audio system
  • Caller is heard through the audio-system speakers
  • An overhead microphone picks up the driver's voice while minimizing background noise and echoing
  • Numbers with voice tags may be stored in the system's memory
  • To make a call hands-free, the driver first activates the system using the steering wheel-mounted fingertip controls, then speaks a preset voice tag
  • Numbers can also be dialed by speaking the telephone number (in CR-Vs equipped with navigation system)
  • Automatic import of phone book and call history
  • Up to five different compatible mobile phones can be paired with the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system

Audio Systems
The CR-V LX is equipped with a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers. The CD player can also read CD-Rs loaded with Windows Media® Audio (WMA)9 or MP3 audio files. The system also includes Bluetooth® streaming audio and Pandora internet radio compatibility (with compatible iPhones). Audio information is displayed on the color i-MID screen positioned high in the center section of the instrument panel. The i-MID left-side steering wheel controls can also be used to tune some audio functions. An auxiliary input jack is standard, along with the USB Audio Interface that can allow an iPod, iPhone or flash drive to be connected to the system.

The system features Speed-Sensitive Volume Control (SVC). With SVC, the audio system’s volume is automatically adjusted up and down depending on vehicle speed. The system has three settings (low, mid, high), changed via the Sound Settings, and if desired SVC can be deactivated.

The CR-V EX has an upgraded AM/FM/CD audio system with six speakers. The system is operated using the 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen or with the i-MID controls on the left of the steering wheel. CR-V EX-L and above trims include an even more impressive 328-watt, 7-speaker premium audio system including subwoofer and XM® Radio. As with the EX’s system, the EX-L and above trims’ audio system is operated by the Display Audio touchscreen or the i-MID steering wheel controls.

USB Audio Interface
A single USB Audio Interface is located in the center console of the CR-V LX, with EX and above trims having two. The interface can read flash drives and compatible digital music devices, such as iPods, that contain MP3 or WMA music files. It is important to note that only the iPod video, iPod nano and other 5th-generation or newer iPods are compatible with this system. The iPod shuffle, mini, and older iPod models are not compatible. When an iPod is connected, the Honda logo will appear on the screen of the compatible iPod indicating that it is ready for use. The iPod or flash drive can then be controlled using the steering wheel-mounted i-MID controls, the LX radio controls and Display Audio. Information such as song title, artist, album art and other information will appear on the CR-V’s i-MID screen – on LX models with a combination of the same information on the i-MID and on Display Audio screens on EX and above trims. The system will also charge the iPod while it is connected.

XM Radio
SiriusXM® Radio is a standard feature for EX-L and above trims and provides more than 130 digital channels of programming with near CD-quality sound. With XM Radio, CR-V owners can listen to their choice of music anywhere in the contiguous 48 states along with select areas of Canada.

XM programming includes channels devoted to music, sports, talk, traffic, weather, children’s programming and entertainment. Of the 130 XM channels, 69 are commercial-free. When the CR-V’s audio system plays XM, the i-MID display screen shows the current station, song title, and artist’s name, with the Display Audio also providing this information when in the audio mode.

Pandora® Internet Compatibility
The CR-V incorporates a wide range of connectivity features to accommodate the ever-changing preferences of customers. All CR-V models are designed to provide a convenient interface for Pandora®. Pandora is a free music service that allows users to open an account online and create up to 100 personalized internet “radio stations” that are based on favorite songs or artists. Users can choose among their stations and listen via computer, and can also download a free smartphone Pandora app, which allows users listen to the same list of personalized stations via their compatible phone. Though Pandora is free, phone data charges apply.

At this time, the Pandora Audio interface in the CR-V is supported only on the iPhone. To use Pandora in the CR-V, an iPhone is connected via a USB port located in the center console. The vehicle’s audio source is set to iPod and, using the phone, the Pandora app is launched. (If the Pandora app is not launched, the phone will function as an iPod.) The i-MID and Display Audio (if included) display Pandora information and album art (only on Display Audio when both are included), and the audio controls allow listeners to choose from among existing stations, pause, resume, skip forward, and mark a track with “like” or “dislike” ratings. To ease driver use, some functionality of the Pandora iPhone app is locked out when using the CR-V’s Pandora interface. On the CR-V LX, Pandora operation is controlled by the up, down and skip buttons on the audio system head unit, and by the i-MID controls on the left side of the steering wheel. On CR-V EX and above trims, Pandora is controlled by the i-MID steering wheel buttons and Display Audio.

Pandora audio can also be streamed wirelessly to the CR-V by a compatible mobile phone (not only iPhone) via the HandsFreeLink Bluetooth® connection. With this type of connection, however, Pandora must be controlled directly with the phone. Though the CR-V’s volume control can be used to set the sound level, the other features of the CR-V’s Pandora interface are not available.
