2016 Honda HR-V - Powertrain

Overview
For 2016, all HR-V models are powered by a Civic-based single overhead cam (SOHC) 1.8-liter inline 4-cylinder design with 16 valves, i-VTEC® valvetrain, and a dual-stage intake manifold. The engine produces a peak 141 horsepower at 6500 rpm1 and 127 lb-ft. of torque at 4300 rpm2, and has a LEV2 ULEV emissions rating3. When equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission and front-wheel drive, the HR-V has an EPA-estimated city/highway fuel economy rating4 of 25/34 miles per gallon. When equipped with the available continuously variable transmission (CVT), the HR-V has an EPA-estimated city/highway fuel economy rating4 of 28/35 miles per gallon when equipped with front-wheel drive, and 27/32 miles per gallon when equipped with Real Time AWD™.

For drivers who desire the four-season confidence of all-wheel drive, the 2016 HR-V is available with Real Time AWD with the Intelligent Control System™ to help provide power to those wheels with traction in low-grip driving conditions such as snow, rain and unpaved road surfaces. Cylinder Block, Crank and Pistons
Compact, rigid, lightweight and low friction describes the end result of engine technology that helps enable the HR-V to achieve high power and high fuel efficiency. A narrow width cam chain, a chain case with a built-in oil pump, and ferrous spin-cast cylinder sleeves are used to make the engine unusually compact, allowing for excellent packaging efficiency.

To make the engine highly rigid, extensive analysis was used to create reinforced areas in the aluminum block construction. A lightweight and very stiff steel crankshaft is used with a high balance ratio that also benefits from a lower block design with extremely high crank support rigidity. At the very bottom of the engine, an aluminum oil pan with integrated stiffeners further adds to rigidity. The high rigidity block design helps reduce noise output and friction.

The lightweight aluminum pistons are carried by high-strength, crack-separated connecting rods that minimize rod weight and size, while also increasing connecting rod rigidity and long-term durability. A "cracked" connection means that the rod and cap are forged as a single unit during the manufacturing process, and then are cracked apart to create a custom fit between the two matching surfaces. This unique design allows for the elimination of connecting rod bolt pins, since the connecting rod bolts can be precision machined to fit the cap to the rod.

Cylinder head and Valvetrain
The HR-V has a die-cast aluminum alloy cylinder head with a single overhead camshaft driven by a silent-type chain that operates in an oil bath. Typically, intake ports are designed as straight as possible to promote more complete filling of the cylinders. In the HR-V, however, to promote the mixing of fuel with incoming air, Honda has devised a unique curved intake port design. This strategic curve not only promotes improved air-fuel mixture, but better concentrates the mixture around the spark plug. This allows for an even more efficient combustion process and further increased fuel efficiency.

Friction Reduction Technologies
The HR-V's 4-cylinder engine makes use of friction-reducing technologies designed to improve engine efficiency. The outer skirts of the lightweight aluminum pistons feature a molybdenum coating applied in a unique dot pattern. The result is reduced overall friction as the pistons move within the cylinder bores. Plateau honing of the piston skirts further reduces friction between the pistons and cylinder walls by creating an ultra-smooth surface. Plateau honing is a two-stage machining process that uses two grinding processes instead of the more conventional single honing process. This also enhances the long-term wear characteristics of the engine. Ion-plated piston rings and low viscosity oil (0W-20) are also used to reduce friction.

i-VTEC® Valve Control System
To achieve strong performance and excellent fuel efficiency, the HR-V's 1.8-liter engine uses a variation of the innovative i-VTEC® system with single intake valve operation. At low engine speeds, just one intake valve in each cylinder operates, while the second intake valve remains closed. At high engine speeds, the i-VTEC® system locks together both sides of the rocker arm via a hydraulic actuator to allow both intake valves to open simultaneously.

This HR-V's i-VTEC® valve timing reacts to driving conditions related to throttle opening, vehicle speed, engine rpm and gear selection. A sophisticated Drive-by-Wire throttle control system, air flow meter, knock sensor and dual-stage air intake allow the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to create seamless transitions between the two modes of i-VTEC® operation.

Torque output has been optimized in the most frequently used 2,000 rpm to 4,000 rpm engine speed range. To this end, the switchover from the low-speed timing to the high-speed valve timing is set between 1,100 rpm and 3,000 rpm depending on engine load. Furthermore, a shutter valve operating the variable intake switches tract length from long to short at approximately 5,000 rpm to best match the more aggressive high-speed valve timing.

Composite Dual-Stage Intake Manifold
A composite dual-stage intake manifold utilizes two intake runners for each cylinder— with one runner longer than the other. Below 5,000 rpm, only the longer of the two runners delivers air to the cylinder – taking advantage of an inertia effect of the long intake path. Above 5,000 rpm, however, a shutter valve in the bore of the short runner opens to allow the passage of additional air to the cylinder. This has the effect of boosting midrange and high-rpm power by utilizing the inertia effect at both low and high rpm.

Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI)
The HR-V engine features Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) that uses an array of sensors to constantly monitor a number of critical operating variables, including throttle position, intake air temperature, water temperature, ambient air pressure (altitude), air flow, along with the position of the crankshaft and camshafts. A new high-performance air/fuel sensor contributes to the engine's enhanced emission performance. Special multi-hole fuel injectors mounted in the lower intake manifold spray directly toward the intake ports. The multi-hole injector design means that fuel droplet size is reduced for better fuel atomization, resulting in improved cold weather start-up, better fuel efficiency and higher horsepower.

Direct Ignition System and Detonation Knock Control
A strong ignition spark is critical to improve power and reduce emissions. The 1.8L I-4 features a direct ignition system that uses individual coil units positioned directly above each spark plug. The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) continually monitors several engine parameters to determine optimum spark timing based on specific driving conditions.

Additionally, a block-mounted acoustic detonation (knock) sensor sends information per each rotation, so that the engine can analyze each frequency with high precision. This signal is sent to the PCM, which then controls ignition timing as needed to help prevent damage.

Drive-by-Wire Throttle Control
An electronic Drive-by-Wire throttle system helps enhance the driving character of the HR-V. With smart electronics "connecting" the throttle pedal to the throttle butterfly valve in the intake system, the engine response can be optimized to suit the driving conditions and to better match the driver's expectations. Combined with the dual-stage intake manifold, the Drive-by-Wire throttle system is an important component to the i-VTEC® system that makes switching between the engine's low-pumping-loss mode and the high-performance mode seamless to the driver. By eliminating the direct throttle cable connection to the engine, the ratio between pedal movement and throttle butterfly movement can be continuously optimized. This adjustable "gain" between throttle and engine is a significant benefit to drivability. A highly responsive DC motor moves the throttle butterfly position in the intake system to change actual throttle position. To establish the current driving conditions, the system monitors pedal position, throttle valve opening position, vehicle speed, engine speed, and engine vacuum. This information is then used to define the throttle control sensitivity.

Exhaust System
The HR-V is equipped with a stainless steel, low heat-mass exhaust system. An integrated exhaust manifold, cast into the cylinder head, eliminates the need for a separate bolt-on exhaust manifold, helping contribute to the engine's compact design and light weight.

Catalytic Converter
The system employs a high-density low precious metal catalytic converter for improved light-off performance along with reduced hydrocarbons and NOx. For improved emissions performance, the catalytic converter bolts directly to the cylinder head, resulting in faster light-off and more complete conversion of the exhaust gases.

Maintenance Minder™ and Tune-Up Intervals
The HR-V's engine tune-up schedule is calculated by the Maintenance Minder™ system. The Maintenance Minder™ system automatically indicates when to have standard service performed based on actual driving conditions (tracked by the PCM) and minimizes the guesswork related to whether the vehicle is being used in standard or severe use conditions for maintenance interval purposes. The display indicates when to change the oil, air cleaner, transmission fluid, spark plugs or coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires. Under normal usage, a tune-up is not required until approximately 100,000 miles5 (only routine inspections and fluid changes are required up to this point). Credit for this longevity goes to long-wearing double-tipped spark plugs, a long-life timing chain, and careful engineering of the precisely manufactured SOHC valvetrain – which reliably maintains proper valve tappet clearances until the first tune-up.

Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™
The 2016 HR-V is offered with Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System™ that shares key design features with the system available in the CR-V. Real Time AWD™ is paired exclusively with the available continuously variable transmission (CVT), and is not offered with the HR-V's standard 6-speed manual transmission.

Compact and efficient, Real Time AWD™ provides a high degree of four-wheel-drive sophistication in rain, snow, on dirt roads and on dry pavement. Unique programming in the HR-V AWD system is aimed at enhanced performance on snow-covered surfaces, by sending more power to the rear wheels to reduce front wheel spin. System operation is completely automatic and virtually transparent in smoothness. Unlike some four-wheel-drive systems that require the driver to select a drive mode based on the perceived need, Real Time AWD's automatic operation means the system is always ready to transfer engine torque to the rear wheels via a propeller shaft, allowing the driver to focus more on driving when situations are demanding.

The capabilities of the system are prioritized to further support high fuel efficiency and all-around drivability on-road as well as off-road. Assisting the front wheels when it is beneficial, Real Time AWD™ instantly powers the rear wheels when starting from a stop, even on dry pavement, working in cooperation with Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®4 and the Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS). The Real Time AWD™ system can operate at all speeds when needed. When torque transfer to the rear wheels is not required, such as when cruising, drive to the rear wheels is decoupled for reduced frictional losses.

The HR-V's all-wheel drive system consists of the conventional front-wheel-drive system, a compact transfer case that distributes torque to a propeller shaft running the length of the vehicle, the rear differential, an electronically-controlled hydraulic pump, a multi-plate clutch, and left and right rear-wheel driveshafts. The multi-plate clutch connects the propeller shaft to the rear differential and is operated by an electric motor driving a hydraulic pump. The electric motor is controlled by the Intelligent Control System, which means that the system can actively apportion power based on the conditions. The system doesn't merely react to front wheel spin; it minimizes wheel spin before it happens by sending power to the rear wheels accordingly. For efficiency, the electric motor activating the hydraulic pump is idled when not required, further reducing drag within the system and helping to reduce energy consumption.

When starting on snow for example, the system sends power to the rear wheels right from the start, minimizing the potential for front wheel spin. The system can also detect when the HR-V is climbing a hill and sends a greater amount of power to the rear wheels in cooperation with the Hill Start Assist feature. Hill Start Assist maintains brake pressure briefly after the brake pedal is released, giving the driver time to accelerate and smoothly resume motion. The Intelligent Control System instantly assesses the road's slope using a G-sensor and the level of grip as detected by VSA, allowing added initial apportioning of torque to the rear wheels for smooth starts.

In summary, Real Time AWD™ offers the optimal balance of confident capability and user friendliness in a lightweight and fuel-efficient design. The driver can simply step on the accelerator and let the system maximize use of available grip and climbing capability.

Transmissions
The HR-V is available with two different transmissions. Front-wheel-drive LX and EX trims have a standard 6-speed manual transmission. An advanced continuously variable transmission (CVT) is offered as an option on those vehicles and is standard on the EX-L Navi, and all versions equipped with Real Time AWD™.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
The HR-V's available continuously variable transmission (CVT), from the Honda Earth Dreams® Technology powertrain series, is related to the transmission in the CR-V. It's scaled for the HR-V's smaller displacement powerplant and offers a wider overall ratio spread. The CVT offers seamless gear ratio transitions and excellent acceleration matched with efficient low-rpm cruising. The CVT's wide overall ratio range results in strong acceleration performance coupled with reduced engine rpm at high road speeds. The highly efficient operation of the CVT makes a significant contribution to the HR-V's overall fuel efficiency. The CVT is available in the LX and EX, and standard in the EX-L Navi. It can be paired with front wheel drive or with the available Real Time AWD™.

The CVT is composed of a torque converter that drives the variable-width drive pulley, which is connected by a steel belt to the variable-width driven pulley. With its angled inner faces, the belt can circle the angled pulley faces at varying diameters depending on the pulley width, which alters the effective ratio between the pulleys. Since there are no steps in the pulley faces, the range of possible gear ratios is nearly infinite. This ultra-fine control of the gear ratio is the key to the CVT's greater efficiency over a conventional automatic transmission with a limited number of discrete gear ratios. Instead of approximating the optimal ratio for the conditions based on a limited number of discrete gear rations, like a conventional automatic, the HR-V's CVT can precisely select the optimal ratio from moment to moment without steps or slippage.

Computer control of the transmission allows the ratio between the pulleys to be altered almost instantly to best suit the driving conditions and accelerator pedal use. A planetary gear set allows the transmission to shift between forward and reverse directions with the operation of a multi-plate clutch. A variable-flow oil pump optimizes oil flow to the transmission's moving parts while minimizing the load on the engine. The HR-V's CVT is more compact and lighter compared to a conventional CVT, with the use of metal gaskets, unit-type case construction and fewer parts through integration.

G-Design Shift Feature
The HR-V CVT is designed to provide the optimum pulley ratio for the driving conditions and to offer a more natural driving feel than conventional CVT transmissions that have a disconnected "rubber-band" feel; the HR-V also offers stronger acceleration response with a linear rise in engine rpm that avoids much of the "slipping" feeling some drivers notice with other CVTs. The G-design Shift logic gives the HR-V a more linear and sporty driving feel.

The HR-V CVT's G-design Shift logic is designed to offer more immediate acceleration response than either conventional automatics or other CVT designs. When abruptly applying power from a steady-state cruising speed, the HR-V CVT immediately sends power to the drive wheels while simultaneously adjusting the pulley ratio to smoothly bring the engine to its horsepower peak in a linear way. By comparison, a conventional automatic is slower to respond and loses time making multiple downshifts.

CVT Automatic Modes
The transmission can be operated in three different fully automatic modes with the console-mounted straight-gate shifter.

  • The D mode is ideal for most driving situations, and combines fuel efficiency with smooth operation and responsive power when needed
  • The S mode is for more performance-oriented driving, and features sportier shift characteristics as controlled by the electronic control unit (ECU)
  • The L mode is for lower speeds and provides additional engine braking, typically used on steep declines.

Paddle Shifters
The CVT transmission can be controlled with steering wheel-mounted, dual-mode paddle shifters to provide a more engaging driver experience. D mode is fully automatic; however the paddle shifters can be used to downshift the transmission for greater engine braking for situations such as descending a steep hill. The transmission can also be upshifted in D mode. When the paddle shifters are used in D mode, full automatic operation will resume after a short time. For spirited driving, S mode includes seven ratios and maintains the selected ratio until the driver operates the paddle shifters again. In S mode the system will only shift automatically to prevent over-revving or lugging the engine and will downshift all the way to first gear when the vehicle comes to a complete stop. Also the transmission will automatically revert to D mode under low traction situations where using the paddle shifters could potentially cause the tires to lock up.

ECON Mode
All HR-V models equipped with the continuously variable transmission are equipped with an ECON button on the left side of the instrument panel as part of the Eco Assist™ system. When activated, ECON mode alters the Drive-by-Wire throttle system response curve in the range from about 10 percent to 60 percent of throttle pedal travel. With less gain, the throttle opening in this range increases more gradually to reduce a potentially excessive peak input for improved fuel efficiency. ECON mode also alters the operation of the cruise control system and the air conditioning system, allowing for slightly increased variances with the set speed and cabin temperature in order to further conserve fuel.

6-Speed Manual Transmission
To provide driving enthusiasts with exceptional control and feel, the HR-V has a standard close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission that's related to the unit offered in the Accord 4-cylinder. Compared to a 5-speed transmission, the 6-speed gearbox allows closer gear ratio spacing, enabling the engine to operate closer to its power peak during acceleration for better performance. The 6-speed manual transmission is standard in the LX and EX front wheel drive models. It is not available in the EX-L Navi, or in combination with Real Time AWD™.

The transmission has been carefully engineered to deliver state-of-the-art performance and shift action, with minimized internal friction, tight internal tolerances and smooth synchronizers. The transmission also has a rigid aluminum exterior case, high-capacity ball bearings, stiff gear shafts, and high torque capacity. A constant-mesh helical reverse gear mechanism significantly reduces noise when reverse is selected. A reverse lockout feature prevents the transmission from being shifted into reverse while the car is moving forward.

  • Targeted IIHS Top Safety Pick and NHTSA 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score

Construction
The HR-V's body is constructed with high-tensile steel and hot-stamped steel reinforcements and stiffeners. The result is low weight with high rigidity, which directly contributes to accurate steering, precise handling, excellent ride quality, low NVH and high durability. The use of ultra-high-strength steel is an essential part of the HR-V's construction, with 27 percent of the body-structure using these advanced materials.

Key areas for high strength steel include:

  • Front cross beam
  • Upper A-pillars and roof side rails
  • Lower A-pillar structures ahead of door opening
  • Lower side sills
  • Upper and lower front frame rails
  • B-pillars

Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™)
As an integral part of the HR-V's structure, Honda's proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. ACE utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle, thus reducing the forces transferred to the passenger compartment. ACE channels frontal crash energy to both upper and lower structural elements, including the floor frame rails, side sills and A-pillars. (See Safety and Driver Assistance section for more information.)

Rigidity
In addition to the use of ultra-high-strength steel to improve rigidity, the HR-V uses high-efficiency frame joints in several key areas of the body-structure, including at the top and bottom of the A-, B- and C-pillars. These frame joints also require fewer reinforcing parts, resulting in both a stiffer and lighter structure. Three additional areas of the body have received special attention to make them even more rigid. These include the front subframe and lower dash cross member, the rear damper mounting structure, and the rear hatch opening. (See Exterior section for more information.)

Aerodynamics
The HR-V was designed to have class-leading aerodynamic performance, which helps improve both fuel efficiency and interior quietness. Specially shaped components at the front of the vehicle guide airflow through the radiator and into the engine's cold-air intake, while channeling the remaining airflow over, around and under the vehicle. Additional aerodynamic strakes and panels are found inside the wheel wells, and underneath the body. Along with carefully shaped A-pillars, these all contribute to the HR-V's efficient passage through the air. The sloped roofline further improves aerodynamic efficiency, as does the fin-style antenna at the rear of the roof and the EX-L Navi's standard roof rails. On all trim levels, a spoiler helps airflow separate cleanly from the roof panel just above the rear window.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) Countermeasures
A host of NVH features are designed to create a quiet and sophisticated cabin environment. This applies even during the most common situations where noise levels increase, including full-throttle acceleration, traveling over rough roads, and at highway speeds.

Key acoustic insulation features include:

  • Sound-absorbing front and rear inner fenders
  • Sound-absorbing front floor under covers
  • Sound-absorbing interior carpeting
  • 360-degree sealing around all doors and rear hatch opening
  • Extra sealing at lower and rear door edges
  • Hood and rear of engine compartment insulator

2016 Honda HR-V - Chassis

Overview
The HR-V's chassis combines sophistication and fun together in one compelling driving package. Ride quality is sporty when the driver and road conditions demand it, as well as comfortable and secure when boulevard and highway travel beckons. These broad capabilities directly result from the HR-V's chassis dynamics, steering tuning and suspension geometry, including the application of front and rear Amplitude Reactive Dampers (ARD). Motion-Adaptive EPS functionality additionally assists the driver in tricky situations such as wet roads. The 2016 HR-V also features standard 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels, convenient Hill Start Assist and Electric Parking Brake (EPB).

Key Chassis Features

  • MacPherson strut front suspension
  • High-rigidity H-type torsion beam rear suspension
  • Low front and high rear roll center height
  • Amplitude Reactive Dampers (ARD)
  • Electric Power Steering (EPS)
  • Motion-Adaptive EPS
  • 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS and EBD
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Electric Parking Brake (EPB)
  • Automatic Brake Hold

Suspension
The HR-V has independent front suspension and a torsion-beam rear suspension with front and rear Amplitude Reactive Dampers for a sophisticated blend of agility, ride comfort, and interior roominess. The MacPherson strut front suspension has optimized caster angle and trail to promote excellent response, feel and feedback, along with a self-aligning trait for a secure feel. Along with the Amplitude Reactive Dampers, a low front roll center and front 24mm stabilizer bar also contribute to quick steering turn-in with reduced body roll, making the HR-V equal parts fun and confidence inspiring.

At the rear, the torsion-beam suspension design provides multiple benefits, starting with the low, flat and wide trunk area. Using a high-rigidity, double-wall H-type torsion beam, the design provides constant rear wheel camber, which helps optimize the HR-V's tire contact patch in all driving situations. Incorporating a higher rear roll center increases agility through better roll-steer characteristics, and roll stiffness was likewise increased through the use of rigid suspension components. The HR-V AWD models add a 19mm rear stabilizer bar to further reduce body roll in vigorous cornering.

Amplitude Reactive Dampers
The HR-V's Amplitude Reactive Dampers provide both superb ride comfort and sporty handling for a truly engaging driving experience in all situations. Two separate damping mechanisms are utilized, one tuned for maximum efficiency on smoother roads with small inputs and the other is tuned to handle large inputs such as rough roads and sudden steering and braking inputs. As a result, the HR-V remains composed and comfortable in a wide range of conditions. Amplitude Reactive Dampers operate on a purely mechanical basis and do not require electronic controls.

Core technology contained within the Amplitude Reactive Dampers includes two separate damping pistons, a main piston and a second piston. Together, these two separate systems extend the damping force range beyond that of a traditional damper. To improve overall ride comfort, when smaller inputs occur during normal driving conditions, only the main piston works to provide the ideal damping characteristics. Then to improve ride and handling during more severe conditions, the second piston operates to provide additional damping force. A rebound spring smoothens the suspension action when the dampers reach maximum extension, such as when the HR-V drives over a speed bump or hump in the road.

Electric Power Steering (EPS)
The HR-V's Electric Power Steering (EPS) system provides a high-quality steering feel that is both refined and sporty. When compared to the operation of a conventional hydraulic pump power steering system, the lightweight brushless EPS motor increases efficiency because it does not draw continuous power directly from the engine. Other advantages of the EPS system include its simplicity and compactness (no hydraulic system is needed) and lower overall power consumption, which helps improve fuel efficiency.
A 15.2:1 steering ratio is used on all HR-V models and trim levels. An EPS torque sensor uses both steering angle and rate signals to provide a smooth, linear initiation of steering assist at all speeds, providing a feeling of accuracy and refinement. It also improves steering self-centering from full steering lock in all driving conditions. Solid mounting points for the steering components, and a large-diameter column shaft, improve steering linearity and reduce vibration for an even more direct and positive steering feel.

Motion-Adaptive EPS
The 2016 HR-V also includes Motion-Adaptive EPS. Using vehicle speed and steering angle data, Motion-Adaptive EPS works with Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®)1 to detect instability in slippery road conditions, both during cornering and under braking, and automatically initiates steering force that prompts the driver to steer in the correct direction. (See Safety and Driver Assistance section for more information.)

Wheels and Tires
All HR-V models ride on 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 215/55R17 all-season tires. The wheels feature a distinctive 5-spoke design that compliments the new body design, while the all-season tire specifications enable confident all-weather and multi-surface driving while also contributing to excellent road holding and ride quality, and low interior noise levels. A T135/90D16 temporary spare tire mounted on a steel wheel is located in the under-trunk storage space.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)2
A standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) alerts the driver whenever the air pressure drops significantly below the recommended level. Located in the Multi Information Display (MID), the TPMS graphic indicates the air pressure level on a real-time basis. A TPMS icon illuminates to alert the driver whenever any of the tires has a significantly low-pressure reading that requires the driver's attention.

4-wheel Disc Brakes with ABS and EBD
All 2016 HR-V models feature power-assisted 4-wheel disc brakes. In front are 11.5-inch ventilated discs with dual-piston calipers, and in back are 11.1-inch solid discs with single-piston calipers.

Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD)
A standard 4-channel anti-lock brake system (ABS) and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) enhance stopping performance by adjusting front-to-rear brake pressure according to vehicle load distribution for optimum brake balance at all times. Sensors at each wheel send signals to the control module, which can modulate braking pressure based on individual wheel speed, optimizing brake pressure balance on all four wheels.

Hill Start Assist
The HR-V's braking system also incorporates Hill Start Assist, which helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when the driver switches from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal while stopped on a hill by maintaining brake pressure briefly after the brake pedal is released. (See Safety and Driver Assistance section for more information.)

Electric Parking Brake (EPB)
A first for a production Honda vehicle, the HR-V's new, standard Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is simpler, more convenient and comfortable to use than a traditional parking brake. Engaging the parking brake now requires only a pull on a switch on the center console. To release the parking brake, the driver simply presses on the accelerator pedal (while the seatbelt is buckled) when the transmission is in drive or reverse or when they push on the parking brake switch.

Besides promoting the use of the parking brake, EPB makes hill starts easier when the HR-V is parked on a grade. As with a traditional manually activated parking brake, EPB functions on the rear wheels only.

Automatic Brake Hold
When activated, Automatic Brake Hold retains brake pressure when the vehicle comes to a stop such as at a traffic light or in heavy traffic. This frees the driver from continually pressing the brake pedal to maintain the vehicle in a stopped position, a significant improvement in driving enjoyment in difficult conditions.

Operating the system requires two simple actions from the driver:

  • Activating/deactivating the system via a switch on the center console
  • Pressing on the brake pedal until the vehicle comes to a stop

Once these steps are taken, Automatic Brake Hold will indicate engagement and then maintain brake pressure when the vehicle has come to a stop, even if the driver later releases the brake pedal. A green "Brake Hold" icon on the instrument panel illuminates to show that the system is functioning. The HR-V then remains stopped – even on a hill – until the driver presses the accelerator pedal. At this point Automatic Brake Hold releases the brakes and the vehicle resumes normal braking function.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™)
The 2016 HR-V utilizes the next-generation version of Honda's proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. ACE utilizes a network of connected structural elements – with extensive use of high-tensile strength steel – to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash. It is expected to help the HR-V achieve top-class crash test ratings. The ACE body structure also helps mitigate the potential for under-ride or over-ride situations that can happen during head-on or offset frontal impacts between vehicles of varying size and ride height.

Unlike most conventional designs that direct frontal crash energy only to the lower load-bearing front body structures, ACE actively channels frontal crash energy to both upper and lower structural elements, including the floor frame rails, side sills and A-pillars. By creating specifically engineered pathways that help distribute these frontal impact forces through a greater percentage of the vehicle's total structure, ACE can more effectively direct those forces around and away from the passenger compartment to help limit cabin deformation and further improve occupant protection. And like other Honda models, the HR-V has an impact-absorbing front body design to help attenuate energy in the event of a frontal collision with a pedestrian. (See Body section for more information.)

Pedestrian Injury Mitigation Design
The HR-V has an impact-absorbing front body design to help dissipate energy in the event of a frontal collision with a pedestrian. Research by Honda shows that the following features can dramatically improve a pedestrian's chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle:

  • Impact-energy absorbing hood
Space is provided between the underside of the hood and key powertrain components, allowing the hood to bend and deform if contact is made with either an adult or a child pedestrian.
  • Deformable hood hinges
Hood hinges are designed to deform easily.
  • Energy-absorbing fender mounts and supports
Front fender mounts and brackets are designed to deform easily to help absorb impact energy.
  • Deformable windshield wiper pivots
Wiper pivots are designed to deform and break away easily.

Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH)
All HR-V models are equipped with a child seat-mounting system called LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) in the outboard rear seating positions. The LATCH system provides two lower anchors and an upper tether anchor. When used with a compatible child seat, the LATCH system provides attachment points between the child seat and the vehicle seat without having to use the vehicle's seat belts. A tether anchor is available for the remaining middle seating position in the second row. All seat belts except the driver's are equipped with a locking retractor that can be used to help secure any child seat. Both rear side doors are also equipped with childproof door locks for added protection.

Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control
Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) is an electronic stability control system that works in conjunction with the HR-V's Drive-by-Wire™ throttle and anti-lock brake systems to enhance control capability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking and cornering, or when the driver makes an emergency maneuver. VSA® functions by applying brake force to one or more wheels independently while also managing the throttle, ignition and fuel systems to help maintain the vehicle's stability and fidelity to the driver's intended path of travel.

The VSA® system continuously analyzes data from sensors that monitor wheel and vehicle speed, steering input, lateral G forces and yaw rate. It compares the driver's control inputs with the vehicle's actual response. Whenever the actual response falls outside of a predetermined acceptable range, VSA® intervenes with a corrective action. For instance, if VSA® detects an oversteer condition, the system may apply braking force to the outside front and rear wheels to counteract the unintended yawing effect. In the event of understeer, VSA® may apply braking to the inside rear wheel while reducing engine power to help return the vehicle to its intended course.

VSA® also provides a limited-slip differential effect for the front wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction. VSA® is calibrated to function in a near-transparent manner, and in many cases a driver will not even be aware of its operation. However, anytime the system is enhancing vehicle stability, an indicator light on the center instrument cluster will flash. While the driver can deactivate the VSA® stability enhancement and traction-control functions via a button on the instrument panel, ABS remains fully operational at all times.

Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS)
The HR-V's standard Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) is a sophisticated system that can initiate steering inputs that prompt the driver to steer in the correct direction during cornering and in slippery road conditions. Using vehicle speed and steering angle data, Motion-Adaptive EPS works with Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) and Electric Power Steering to detect instability in slippery road conditions both during cornering and under braking and automatically initiates steering inputs aimed at prompting the driver to steer in the correct direction. This advanced technology supports the driver's action in operating the vehicle more safely and comfortably.

Three examples of how Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) functions in conjunction with VSA are:

  • Stabilizes Braking – Corrects the driver's steering input to reduce vehicle instability when the driver is braking hard on road surfaces with different friction coefficients (such as pavement that is only partially covered with dirt or snow)
  • Mitigates Understeer – Corrects the steering inputs to mitigate understeer and help the driver trace the curve
  • Mitigates Oversteer – Corrects the steering inputs to mitigate oversteer and help the driver trace the curve

The Motion-Adaptive EPS system consists of a rack-and-pinion steering gear with an electric motor installed concentrically around the steering rack. To control the level of assist the Powertrain Control Module receives signals from a speed sensor and, coupled with a steering sensor for torque and rotation, then calculates the optimal amount of assist and sends a signal to the electric motor.

Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
The HR-V is equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist as standard equipment. A power brake booster offers a solid feel with high pedal rigidity. The ABS independently modulates braking power at each wheel to help the driver retain steering control during heavy braking. EBD automatically optimizes braking force between the front and rear wheels, helping to ensure that the HR-V stops in the shortest distance possible, regardless of the number of passengers or amount of cargo that it is carrying. Brake Assist recognizes emergency braking situations, based on the speed of pedal application, and quickly helps the driver apply full braking force.

Expanded View Driver's Mirror
All HR-V models are equipped with an Expanded View Driver's Mirror that increases the driver's field of vision to provide a better view of objects to the back and side of the vehicle. LED turn signals are included on driver's and passenger's side mirrors on the EX and EX-L Navi. (See Body section for more information.)

Honda LaneWatch® (EX, EX-L Navi)
The HR-V EX and EX-L Navi include Honda's LaneWatch® display, which uses a camera located at the bottom of the passenger-side exterior mirror to capture a wide-angle view of the passenger side roadway that is displayed on the 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen. The image is displayed when the right turn signal is activated, or when a button on the end of the turn signal stalk is pressed.

The LaneWatch® display field-of-view is significantly wider than that of a typical passenger-side mirror, helping the driver see traffic, as well as pedestrians, bicycles or other objects, in the vehicle's blind spot. To help make judging distance easier, the display has three reference lines. Drivers should visually confirm roadway conditions prior to changing lanes.

On the navigation-equipped EX-L Navi, when LaneWatch® is in use and a navigation turn prompt is needed, the image changes to split-screen mode so that LaneWatch® and navigation information can be displayed simultaneously. LaneWatch® can also be customized to suit the driver's preferences. Turn-signal activation of the LaneWatch® system can be turned on or off, as can the three on-screen reference lines. Screen brightness, contrast and black level are also adjustable.

Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Guidelines3
All HR-V models receive a multi-angle rearview camera, viewable on the LX trim's 5-inch color LCD screen and the EX and EX-L Navi's 7-inch Display Audio screen. The camera can show a top view, normal view or wide rear view when the transmission is in Reverse. The camera is located on the rear hatch, just below the handle. The LX trim features static guidelines that help drivers gauge how close they are to an object, while EX and EX-L Navi trims have dynamic guidelines that project the vehicle's future path based on the driver's steering wheel inputs.

Hill Start Assist (HSA)
Hill Start Assist helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when the driver switches from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal while the vehicle is stopped on an incline by maintaining brake pressure briefly after the brake pedal is released. Hill Start Assist automatically activates when the vehicle senses a certain incline and is fully stopped in any forward or reverse gear. The system uses a longitudinal G-sensor along with a wheel speed sensor and steering angle sensor to control the hydraulic brake modulator. Once the HSA system has activated, the brakes automatically release when the driver depresses the throttle.

2016 Honda HR-V - Exterior

Overview
The HR-V represents an entirely new generation of subcompact crossover vehicle for Honda that blends the styling of a coupe, the toughness, space and utility of an SUV, and the quality and refinement of a Honda in one sporty, personal and versatile multi-dimensional vehicle. The exterior design matches the HR-V's fun and sophisticated driving character, with three defining principal design characteristics: large 17-inch diameter wheels and tires, a high seating position that results in a high "eye point" for the driver and passengers (about four inches higher than in a typical subcompact sedan or wagon), and high road clearance to handle rough roads.

Styling
With sleek coupe-like styling and the stance and utility of an SUV, the new HR-V styling is equal parts athletic, sophisticated and functional. The aerodynamic front end features a prominent black grille with chrome trim and multi-reflector headlights, all integrated with an uplifting "wing" motif. A wide track imparts a feeling of strength while also contributing to surefooted handling. Fog lights on the EX and EX-L Navi trim levels are recessed into the black lower fascia.

The windswept aero influences continue along the HR-V body sides, which are defined by an uplifting character line that sweeps upward from behind the front wheel arch to converge at the sloping C-pillar. The effect is dramatic and unique, and imbues the HR-V with a sense of motion even while parked. The wheel arches and lower sills are trimmed with black finishers, adding a look of toughness while also helping to protect body panels from damage from road debris. Another unique HR-V feature is the rear door handles, which are integrated high in the C-pillars. This smoothens the rear door lines for a coupe-like style while also positioning the handles in an easy-to-grasp location. Standard 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels add a premium look.

At the rear, the HR-V's styling melds the clean, continuous roofline and rear window of a coupe with the utility of a crossover vehicle's hatchback and the ruggedness of an SUV. In keeping with the sweeping appearance of the front end and body sides, the rear fender edges and hatch likewise have uplifting character lines that add lightness and energy visually. And finally, the black lower rear bumper fascia integrates with an aerodynamic diffuser for an intriguing look of ruggedness and efficiency.

Lighting
The front light arrays include multi-reflector halogen headlights with an auto-off feature, Daytime Running Lights (DRL), and turn signals with clear lenses and amber bulbs. The rear light arrays include LED taillights, LED brake lights, and LED center high-mounted stop light . The EX and EX-L Navi add fully automatic headlights with an auto-on/off feature, halogen front fog lights, and LED turn signals integrated into the side mirror housings. One-touch turn signals are standard on all HR-V models.

Power Side Mirrors
The shape of the two-tone, black and color-matched side mirrors compliment the HR-V's exterior styling and were specifically designed for low aerodynamic drag to improve fuel efficiency while reducing wind noise. The mirror base and mounting point was designed for the new HR-V to optimize visibility around the mirror. A "break-away" folding design significantly reduces the chance of damage if the mirror should strike or be struck by an object.

Easily adjustable, the power mirrors include Honda's unique Expanded View Driver's Mirror, which expands the visible area. In addition, EX and EX-L Navi trims feature heated mirrors for all-weather driving convenience and include integrated LED turn indicators for added visibility in traffic. The EX and EX-L Navi passenger-side mirror also includes an integrated Honda LaneWatch®1 camera. (See Safety and Driver Assistance section for more information.)

Visibility and Glass
The 2016 HR-V has a large glass area for excellent driver visibility and sense of space for all occupants. Excellent outward visibility is a hallmark of Honda design and a key feature for the HR-V, which offers excellent front and rear sight lines for the driver, as well as a commanding eye point level. The EX and EX-L Navi trim levels add rear privacy glass for improved passenger comfort.

One-Touch Open/Close Power Moonroof
The EX and EX-L Navi trims feature a one-touch power moonroof with tilt feature that will fully open or close with a single touch of the switch. The moonroof also has a sliding sunshade that opens automatically with the roof and can be closed manually to block sunlight. The moonroof can also tilt to provide ventilation. Special attention was given to the design of the moonroof mechanism to provide ample headroom.

To tilt or slide the moonroof, the driver or front passenger needs only to fully press the ceiling-mounted switch once (instead of pressing and holding it for several seconds). The moonroof then fully opens or closes automatically. However, if the operator wishes to only partially open or close the moonroof (such as to achieve partial ventilation), a lighter touch yields fully manual control.

An auto-reverse feature is built in, helping to ensure that the moonroof will not fully close if it encounters sufficient resistance from an obstruction, such as someone's hand or arm. If sufficient resistance is detected, the auto-reverse mechanism will reopen the moonroof.

Tailgate
The HR-V's manual tailgate features twin gas-charged hydraulic struts that ease opening and a single pull-down handle located on the right side. The tailgate can be unlocked by pressing the remote twice (first for driver's door only, second for all other doors and the tailgate) or by pressing a button inside the driver's door. The power latch is located directly under the tailgate handle. A 360-degree seal surrounds the tailgate opening for a tight seal against the intrusion of water, dirt and wind noise. The tailgate automatically locks whenever the HR-V is locked.

The tailgate opening dimensions are generous in size, allowing easy stowage of large or bulky items, including mountain bikes, which can be stored vertically with their front wheels removed. The opening width is 46.5 inches, with an opening height (from bottom tailgate sill to top sill) of 35.3 inches. As well, a low lift-over height of 25.7 inches makes stowing heavy or awkward items easier.

Storage Area
Inside is a spacious 58.8 cu-ft of total storage space (LX FWD with 2nd-row seat folded down) complimented by a flat floor that simplifies and improves the HR-V's cargo-carrying utility. Two chrome tie-down rings are positioned at the front of the storage area, which is illuminated by a light positioned at the left side of the opening. The storage area is nicely trimmed in high-quality carpeting that matches the HR-V's passenger compartment. The spare tire, wheel and jack are located under a lift-up floor panel at the rear. And finally, a retractable cargo cover provides a visual screen to hide cargo left in the vehicle when parked.

Storage versatility is further improved via a 60/40 split 2nd-Row Magic Seat®. (See Interior section for more information.)

Windshield Wipers
The HR-V's windshield wipers are 2-speed/intermittent on the LX, with the EX and EX-L Navi trims adding a variable-intermittent function. The wipers are positioned out of the airflow over the hood to reduce turbulence that can contribute to aerodynamic drag and interior noise. For pedestrian safety, the wiper arm pivots are deformable. (See Safety and Driver Assistance section for more information.) A reverse-linked intermittent rear window wiper/washer is standard equipment on all trim levels.

Operation of the windshield wipers is intuitively simple using the stalk positioned next to the steering wheel; pushing the stalk up or down operates the front windshield wipers, and twisting the outside part of the stalk operates the rear windshield wiper.

Roof Rails
The HR-V EX-L Navi trim adds roof rails to the HR-V lineup. Designed for low aerodynamic drag and turbulence, the rails extend from just behind the windshield all the way to the C-pillar, conforming to the graceful arch of the HR-V's roofline. Each rail has four anchor points for attaching cross rails or an accessory rack. (See Accessories section for more information.)

Exterior Colors
A total of eight stylish exterior colors help the HR-V express its youthful appeal and intelligent design and functionality. Three are unique to the HR-V and new to the Honda lineup: Mulberry Metallic, Deep Ocean Pearl, and Misty Green Pearl. For the best overall HR-V presentation, certain colors are exclusively coordinated with a Gray or Black interior.

2016 Honda HR-V - Interior

Overview
The all-new 2016 HR-V's interior is designed to offer welcoming comfort for up to five passengers with surprising roominess and upscale details. The key to the HR-V's remarkable versatility is the clever second row Magic Seat® that offers unmatched cargo carrying adaptability. The interior boasts a number of standard "class-above" features and optional premium features that make it more comfortable, convenient, and keep its occupants informed, connected and entertained. The spacious cabin features plenty of useful storage features, including a high deck center console with generous internal storage space and a sliding armrest. Upgrades include an available leather trim package, and available premium features such as Smart Entry with Push Button Start and the 7-inch touchscreen Display Audio system.

Key Interior Features

  • 100.1 cu.-ft. of passenger space (96.1 cu.-ft. in EX and EX-L Navi)
  • 2nd-row Magic Seat®
  • Steering wheel-mounted audio controls
  • 7-inch touchscreen Display Audio (EX, EX-L Navi) (see Audio and Telematics Section)

Styling
The interior of the HR-V has an open airy feel with large glass area for excellent outward visibility. Soft touch surfaces give the interior a rich feel highlighted by bright chrome and deep piano black accents. The high-deck center console offers abundant storage, coupled with the personal feel of a sports coupe. The sporty, backlit three-dial instrument panel includes a Multi Information Display (MID), 5-inch color LCD screen (LX) or the 7-inch Display Audio (EX and EX-L Navi). Comfortable and supportive seats with high-quality fabric are standard on the LX and EX trims and the upscale luxury of a leather-trimmed seats and upper door linings is standard in the EX-L Navi. In addition to the leather trim on the seats, the HR-V EX-L Navi includes a leather-trimmed steering wheel and shift knob as well as heated front seats.

Interior Colors
The HR-V's interior palette is sophisticated and coordinated. Seating is offered in gray or black – fabric in the LX and EX, leather in the EX-L Navi, with matching door panel accents. The instrument panel and carpet are black in all HR-V models.

Packaging
The 2016 HR-V is designed to offer the maximum interior space for passengers and cargo inside an exterior package that's compact and easy to park. The HR-V offers the convenience of wide-opening doors and easy step-in with an eye point about four inches higher than that of typical passenger cars. With 100.1 cubic feet of passenger space (LX trim; 96.1 cubic feet in EX and EX-L Navi) the sensation of spaciousness is further enhanced by a large, airy greenhouse (upper section of body and glass area). Contributing to the HR-V's remarkable interior roominessare clever packaging, thoughtful storage features, and the multi-position 2nd-row Magic Seat®, first seen in the Fit, that is easily reconfigured for maximum cargo- and passenger-carrying utility.

Driver Interface
The HR-V's fresh new interior has been centered on the needs of the driver, with instruments and controls oriented for quick readability and easy, natural access. The large speedometer is placed in the center of the instrument pod that has Eco Assist lighting, which changes in color to help the driver achieve greater driving efficiency. A tachometer is positioned to the left, and an MID on the right, can cycle through various informational displays. The instruments and displays provide critical and useful information including current estimated fuel efficiency, time, outside temperature, fuel gauge and more. The 5-inch color LCD screen (LX) or new 7-inch touchscreen Display Audio (EX and EX-L Navi) are conveniently positioned for either the driver or front passenger to control. New-style steering wheel-mounted controls with easy functionality provide quick access to various functions and information without the driver having to remove hands from the wheel.

Steering Wheel-Mounted Controls
All HR-V steering wheels have three sets of controls, including new-style radial controls. There are two left-hand sets: one operates the audio system or the Display Audio system, if equipped; the other controls the Bluetooth®1 HandsFreeLink® and, if equipped, the navigation system. The right-hand set operates the cruise control.

The left-hand set of radial audio controls includes four controls on one ring – like the four points on a compass – to simplify the layout and provide for intuitive toggling between functions. A short push on the MENU button engages the Display Audio system. All controls are positioned ergonomically where they are easy to reach and operate with minimal distraction for the driver. They also offer a pleasant tactile feel.

Progressive Instrument Illumination
The HR-V's instrumentation uses a progressive illumination sequence when the driver enters the vehicle. When the door is opened, the instrumentation is illuminated at 10 percent of its full brightness. When the key is put in the ignition (encircled with an illuminated ring) or when the push-button start button is depressed, the instrument illumination ramps up to 100 percent. When the ignition is turned on, the illuminated instrument needles and enunciator lights come on, indicating all systems are ready.

Interior Storage
Though compact in size, the HR-V offers surprising utility in its cleverly engineered interior. The center console offers a deep internal storage compartment topped by a padded sliding armrest. Farther forward, dual cup holders top the console. A lower open tray near the front of the console is accessible from either side and is designed for phone storage. In LX trims, a USB port, auxiliary input jack and 12-volt power socket are positioned in the tray. In EX and EX-L Navi trims, the auxiliary input jack is replaced by an additional USB port and an HDMI display audio interface that can be used for direct connection to and streaming from compatible smartphones.

Numerous storage areas are sized to hold common personal items, and they're also conveniently located for easy use. They include a 427.2 cubic-inch, lighted glove box, convenient door bins in front and rear, and a passenger-side seatback pocket. Beverage holders are located on the center console in the front row, with an additional holder positioned on the rear of the console for rear seat use. Additional beverage holders are positioned in all four doors.

Cargo Area
Opening the HR-V's large rear hatch provides access to a remarkably spacious and accommodating cargo area. With a low lift-over height, four dedicated seat modes and dozens of configurations, the HR-V offers remarkable functionality and utility. Fold the 2nd-row Magic Seat® forward and it provides an enormous 58.8 cubic feet of cargo space (57.6 when equipped with AWD) on the LX trim. Other configurations allow long and tall items to be carried or even for two people to relax with their feet up when the HR-V is parked.

2nd-Row Magic Seat®
Like the Fit, the HR-V features the exceptional utility of the 60/40 (right/left), split 2nd-row Magic Seat®. The Magic Seat® can be configured in multiple ways to adapt instantly to a wide variety of circumstances and needs. In the standard seatback-up/seat bottom-down position there is ample room for three passengers to sit comfortably. As the seatback is split 60/40, one or two passengers can still be accommodated while extending the cargo-carrying capacity by folding down one side or the other. And since the HR-V offers exceptional rear-seat legroom, the rear passenger area can also accommodate a good-sized pet kennel or crate. The Magic Seat® can easily be folded into any of its positions with levers accessible from the rear of the car or the rear doors.

Utility Mode
With both 2nd-row seats folded down, the Utility Mode allows for maximum cargo capacity – a cavernous 58.8 cu-ft (57.6 in AWD model) on the LX trim. The flat floor and regular shape of the area allow for the most efficient use of the space. Also, due to the low lift-over height of the hatch and low floor height, large and heavy items can be easily loaded. Four tie-down points make it easy to secure cargo.

Long Mode
If long items such as lumber, a stepladder, or even recreational items such as surfboards or musical instruments need to be carried, the Long Mode accommodates. Extra long items can be carried with the rear seat on the passenger side folded down and the front passenger seat tilted all the way back. The HR-V's Long Mode accommodates bulkier items without the need for a roof rack.

Tall Mode
The Tall Mode is another useful cargo-carrying configuration for tall items that need to remain upright, such as a large plant. This would also be useful for bringing an uncrated dog along, since the side-door entry is even lower than the rear entry of the vehicle, making it easy for most dogs of any age to get in or out. The space can even accommodate two mountain bikes with their front wheels removed. This is a better alternative than laying one bike on top of another in the back, which risks damage from protruding pedals and handlebars.

Front Seats
The HR-V features contoured, supportive front seats that are manually adjustable. The driver's seat also offers manual height adjustment. LX and EX trims have soft, durable cloth upholstery, while the EX-L Navi features leather-trimmed seats.

2016 Honda HR-V - Comfort and Convenience

Overview
The all-new HR-V is designed around the needs of its passengers, with a wide range of "class-above" comfort and convenience features. From the clever utility of the center console's roomy storage features, and the easy connectivity of Bluetooth®1 HandsFreeLink®, to the comfort of the EX-L Navi trim's heated front leather seats, the HR-V interior is exceptionally accommodating.

Key Comfort and Convenience Features

Smart Entry and Push Button Start/Stop
The HR-V EX and EX-L Navi trims include the convenience of the Smart Entry and Push Button Start/Stop system. The system simplifies approaching, entering and operating the HR-V – especially when the driver is carrying items. Operating the system requires only that the driver has possession of the Smart Entry key.

Smart Entry allows the driver to gain access to the vehicle without having to use the remote key fob or the key. Instead, the remote has a unique digital identity that is recognized by the vehicle when the driver approaches. At this point, to enter the vehicle, the driver simply pulls one of the front door handles while the remote in his or her possession. Similarly, pressing a soft-touch button located on the rear fascia opens the trunk.

Once the driver has opened the door and is seated, the Push Button Start system allows the driver to start the engine by pushing the START/STOP button, positioned on the instrument panel, while depressing the brake pedal. Powertrain operation and certain electrical functions are stopped when the START/STOP button is pressed again at the conclusion of the drive.

After parking the vehicle, a touch of the soft-touch lock button on either front door handle locks all doors and tailgate to secure the car. Alternatively, a press of the LOCK button on the Smart Entry remote will also simultaneously lock all the doors and trunk. The Smart Entry system will not allow the transmitter fob to be locked in the interior or the trunk.

Sliding Sunvisors
To provide more flexible shading from the sun, all HR-Vs come standard with sliding sunvisors. The driver and front passenger sunvisors can be moved along their mounting shafts to provide perpendicular shade for the eyes even when the front seats are in their rear-most position.

Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror
The HR-V EX-L Navi features an electro chromatic interior rearview mirror that automatically dims during nighttime driving to reduce glare from the headlights of following vehicles.

Steering Wheel
The HR-V Steering wheel has a thick rim for a comfortable grip. In the EX-L Navi, the steering wheel and shift knob are wrapped in leather. To help the driver get comfortable, the steering wheel offers manual tilt and telescope adjustments.

Climate Control with Wide Flow Passenger Vents
The HR-V offers two different climate control systems. Both feature a wide-flow passenger-side vent for more comfortable and uniform ventilation. The HR-V LX has a manual climate control system; the EX and EX-L Navi have an automatic climate control system with color touchscreen electrostatic controls.

Maintenance Minder™ Display
All HR-V models have a Maintenance Minder™ system that tracks service-related items based on vehicle usage. The Maintenance Minder™ system automatically indicates when to have standard service performed based on actual driving conditions (tracked by the ECU) and minimizes the guesswork related to whether the vehicle is being used in standard or severe use conditions for maintenance interval purposes. The display indicates when to change the oil, air cleaner, transmission fluid, spark plugs or coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires. Maintenance Minder™ information appears in the MID and i-MID displays.

ECON Mode
Every HR-V equipped with the continuously variable transmission has a standard green ECON button to the left of the steering wheel. This button engages ECON mode, in which several operating characteristics of the vehicle are modified for enhancing fuel efficiency. (See the Powertrain-ECON Mode section for more information).

Engine Immobilizer
Complementing the remote entry system is a standard engine-immobilizer system. On vehicles without the Smart Entry feature, a special electronically coded key prevents the car from being started-even if a mechanical duplicate of the key is used. A transponder, built into the key, signals the immobilizer control unit that the key is genuine. If the car is hot-wired, or an unauthorized key is used, the engine will not start.

Auto-Up/Down Driver and Passenger's Windows
The 2016 HR-V has front and rear power windows with a one-touch auto-up/down driver's window. Illuminated controls allow for easy operation at night. Pressing a master switch on the driver's window control panel can deactivate the passengers' windows.

Power Locks
Power locks are standard with a customizable auto-locking feature. Remote entry is standard equipment on all HR-Vs. The key design has an integrated transmitter in the handle with lock, unlock and panic buttons.

Electric Parking Brake and Automatic Brake Hold
Electric Parking Brake (EPB) and Automatic Brake Hold meaningfully reduce the effort of driving the vehicle, thereby raising overall enjoyment and comfort for the driver. (See the CHASSIS section for more information).

EX and EX-L Navi trims feature a system with 180-watts and add two additionial speakers (tweeters) for a total of six, as well as the 7-inch Display Audio electrostatic touchscreen, a second USB interface2, and an HDMI Display Audio interface3. On the EX-L Navi trim, the tuner is upgraded with HD Radio™4 reception and SiriusXM® Radio5 (SiriusXM is available on EX as an accessory). All trims feature Bluetooth® streaming audio when paired with a compatable cell phone. Pandora®6 compatibility is standard on EX and EX-L Navi through both Bluetooth® and USB connections. In all models, the single-disc CD player can read CD-Rs loaded with Windows Media® Audio (WMA) or MP3 audio files.

All systems feature Speed-Sensitive Volume Control (SVC). As vehicle speed changes, the audio system's volume is automatically raised or lowered to compensate for changes in ambient cabin noise. The feature can be deactivated at any time.

Display Audio
HR-V EX and EX-L Navi trims features Honda's 7-inch touchscreen Display Audio. The intuitive and easy-to-use Display Audio lets you swipe, tap and pinch–just like on a tablet computer or smartphone–to control the vehicle's audio system, display settings and other advanced features.

Icons resembling smartphone apps are displayed on the high-definition, capacitive touchscreen, making the interface intuitive and easy to use. Standard internet-sourced music and media options, such as Pandora® are built into the Display Audio interface, with the ability to create personalized stations, tap to "like" songs, and view album artwork directly from the touchscreen when paired with a compatible smartphone. Display Audio also integrates touch operation of the volume (with a quick-swipe adjustment), menu, and return functions for a modern and sleek look. The EX-L Navi model includes the Display Audio with a fully integrated and fully featured Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with continuously updated traffic information.

USB Ports
In LX trims a USB port positioned in the lower front storage tray of the front console allows for easy connection of items such as an iPod®, iPhone® or a removable flash drive storage device. The USB port is located alongside a 12-volt power outlet. The HR-V EX and EX-L Navi trims add a second USB port in the same area for connection of an additional device.

SiriusXM® Radio
SiriusXM® Radio is a standard feature in the EX-L Navi, and it provides more than 165 channels of digital programming with near CD-quality sound. The SiriusXM® signal is beamed to two broadcast satellites positioned in geostationary orbit above Earth. The beams from these two broadcast satellites combine to span the entire continental United States and some of Canada.

SiriusXM® Radio programming includes channels devoted to music, sports, talk, traffic, weather, children's programming and entertainment. When the audio system plays XM® Radio, the audio system displays the current category, station song title, or artist's name.

Pandora® Interface
EX and EX-L Navi trims provide a convenient interface for Pandora®. Pandora® is a free music service that allows users to open an account online and create up to 100 personalized internet "radio stations" that are based on favorite songs or artists. Users can choose among their stations and listen via computer, and can also download a free smartphone Pandora® app, which allows users listen to the same list of personalized stations via their compatible phone. Although Pandora® is free, phone data charges apply.

An iPhone® or compatible Android phones can be connected wirelessly, using Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®. To use Pandora®, the Pandora app is launched on a compatible connected smartphone and the vehicle's audio source is set to Pandora®. The audio screen shows Pandora® information and album art, and the audio controls allow listeners to choose from among existing stations, pause, resume, skip forward, and mark a track with "Like" or "Dislike" ratings. Some functionality of the Pandora® app is locked out when using the HR-V's Pandora® interface.

Next Generation HondaLink™
The Display Audio system with next generation HondaLink allows the customer's digital lifestyle to seamlessly integrate with the car and provides access to a world of cloud-based information. The all-new application-based platform connects customers to online content both inside and outside the car, all powered by their smartphones.

Four specialty HondaLink apps provide organization and are a gateway to additional online content:

  • Connect App – Provides convenient access for many services including location searches, local weather, messaging, Maintenance Minder™ alerts, service scheduling by phone, and access to the Owners Guide. Users can tap for weather updates and store favorite destinations for quick routing with the Navigation app.
  • Navigation App – A cloud-based navigation app for purchase8 that includes 3D mapping and continuously updated traffic information. The app offers a variety of location search options including search by point of interest, text search, or previous locations. Routes can be pre-planned on a smartphone and will display on the vehicle's touchscreen. Turn-by-turn routing guidance is available through the vehicle's audio system as well.
  • Aha™App – provides access to an extensive and diverse selection of audio content across multiple genres and demographics, plus featured new stations, Internet radio, podcasts, audiobooks, news, Twitter and Facebook updates and nearby location listings for restaurants, coffee houses, hotels, weather, parks, and gas stations. Users can tap to personalize stations or add favorites via smartphone or directly through the Display Audio interface.
  • Launcher App –Finds and organizes Honda-approved 3rd party apps so they can be quickly integrated into the Display Audio system. Approved apps can be found through the Launcher and shown on the Display Audio screen for easy access.

The connection between the system and the user's smartphone is made through the USB interface and a new HDMI interface. For iPhone 5 and 6 models, a HondaLink iOS cable kit is available for purchase through Honda dealers or online at hondanavi.com. The iOS cable kit includes an Apple Lightning digital AV adapter, an Apple Lightning-to-USB cable and an appropriate-length HDMI cable (Apple-approved). Consumer information and helpful tips regarding HondaLink can be found at hondalink.com.

HDMI®9 Audio and Video Playback
On EX and above trims, the Display Audio system allows audio and video playback when "HDMI" is selected from the audio source menu and a compatible device (i.e. iPhone 5 or 6) is connected via a HDMI cable.

If the vehicle's CVT is in the "Park" position or the parking brake is activated for models equipped with a manual transmission, video content can be displayed from the device on to the 7-inch screen with audio playback sent through the six vehicle speakers, effectively transforming the Display Audio system into an in-vehicle video entertainment display. If the vehicle's transmission is shifted out of the "Park" position, video playback will cease, but audio playback can continue. This functionality does not allow control of the connected device through the touchscreen.

HondaLink Assist
An additional new feature on HR-V EX and above is HondaLink Assist10 that can help request emergency assistance for drivers. If a compatible phone is paired through Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, there is a cellular connection and an airbag deployment sensor is triggered by a collision, the system is designed to automatically attempt to notify an operator, report the car's current location, and allow you to talk directly to the operator. The operator can then contact emergency services if needed.

Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ With Voice Recognition and Honda HD Digital Traffic
Standard on the HR-V EX-L Navi, the integrated Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System11 uses GPS technology to provide drivers with turn-by-turn guidance to their chosen destination. The system adds the HD Digital Traffic feature, which alerts the driver to current traffic conditions and can display alternate routes around gridlock. It features expanded coverage including many surface streets within the U.S., allowing the driver to choose faster, less congested routes. HD Digital Traffic is subscription-free.

The navigation system can be controlled by voice or through the 7-inch electrostatic touch-screen Audio Display utilizing its tap, pinch and swipe functionality. The voice-activation system can respond to more casual command phrases that require less user familiarization, in addition to the previous capability of being able to understand spoken city and street names. For example, a voice request for "Radio 98.3 FM" can now be spoken in approximately a dozen different ways ranging from "change the radio station to 98.3" to "98.3 FM." This logic applies to audio functionality of the audio/information screen. The navigation system can also be controlled by voice with conventional navigation commands like, "Find nearest Chinese restaurant" or "find nearest ATM."

The audio system is automatically muted when the "Talk" button is pressed. The voice-recognition technology allows the driver to simply speak city and street names aloud, and the system responds by displaying the matches available in the database. Points of interest on the map – such as restaurants and grocery stores – can be displayed with brand logo icons or you can have the system provide turn-by-turn navigation, all by voice command. The massive point-of-interest (POI) database includes telephone numbers that can be dialed by using the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system when the driver's cellular telephone is connected to the system.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System uses GPS in combination with detailed information from the vehicle's mapping system to pinpoint the vehicle's location and to provide a host of useful mapping and route guidance features. The antenna can utilize up to 12 satellites from a network of 24 global positioning satellites. If the antenna is obstructed by a tunnel, a parking garage or a tall building, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle so that the map information remains current and reliable. The vehicle clock is independently controlled by GPS data, so when time zones are crossed while driving, the clock will automatically set itself to the current time.

Siri Eyes Free Integration
Adding another new premium feature, Display Audio integrates Apple's Siri Eyes Free mode into the HR-V. Compatible iPhone® users will be able to operate Siri through familiar voice commands by pressing and holding the TALK button on the steering wheel when their iPhone is paired via Bluetooth®. Using Eyes Free mode, Siri takes hands-free functionality even further and helps to minimize potential distractions by keeping the iOS device's screen from lighting up.

Owners can direct Siri to perform a number of specific tasks while they keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel.

  • Sending text messages and e-mails
  • Reading (listening to) incoming text messages and emails
  • Setting up calendar entries, reminders, and alarms
  • Checking the weather
  • Turn-by-turn voice navigation (when the audio system is set to Bluetooth® Audio or iPod mode)
  • Sports scores and stock quotes

SMS Text Message Function
The HR-V EX and EX-L Navi trims have a standard SMS Text Message function that can read incoming texts aloud over the audio system, and allow the driver to reply with any of six factory preset messages. The system works with SMS-capable cell phones that have an active data plan and the Message Access Profile (MAP), such as the Blackberry, Droid X and others. Apple iPhone® models do not support this feature, but Siri Eyes Free Mode (iPhone® 5 and 6 at time of launch) offers the ability to initiate, hear and respond to text messages via voice commands.

Once a compatible phone is paired with the HR-V's Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system, the text messaging function is enabled. When the phone receives a text message, an alert appears on the 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen. Using the touchscreen, the driver can choose to have the message read aloud, can select among the preset reply choices, or can call the sender – all without touching the phone.

To help avoid driver distraction, the text of the incoming message is not displayed on screen unless the CVT is in Park or the parking brake is activated on models equipped with a manual transmission.

Available factory preset text replies:

  • Talk to you later, I'm driving.
  • I'm on my way.
  • I'm running late.
  • OK
  • Yes
  • No

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®
The Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® interface is designed to offer hands-free operation for many Bluetooth®-enabled mobile telephones. Standard on all HR-V models, the system wirelessly connects the driver's cell phone to the vehicle's audio system. This allows the driver to make or answer cell phone calls without removing hands from the steering wheel. The system is compatible with Bluetooth®-enabled cell phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP). A list of compatible phones can be found at handsfreelink.com or honda.com.

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® enables audio files to be played through the vehicle's audio system wirelessly with a feature called Bluetooth® Audio. If an audio compatible device is paired, it will be added as an auxiliary source on the audio 5-inch color LCD screen (LX) or 7-inch Display Audio (EX, EX-L Navi) screen. This allows the Bluetooth®device's media to be played wirelessly by the audio system. Cell phone devices that support the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) 1.3 allow the display of metadata for artist, album and track name on the audio 5-inch color LCD screen or Display Audio screen. The vehicle's audio controls for "skip forward" and "skip backward" allow for navigation from track to track.

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® is designed for easy use. After the driver completes a simple one-time "pairing" process to link the cell phone with the vehicle, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® can communicate wirelessly and securely with the driver's cell phone when the phone is within about 33 feet of the vehicle. Once the driver enters the vehicle, the phone can be stored in a pocket, briefcase, purse or a storage bin inside the vehicle's cabin as the call transfers information through the wireless telephone interface. Certain compatible cell phones can also transfer the cellular phonebook into the vehicle through the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system. After the cellular phonebook is transferred, calls can be made by selecting from the registered phonebook on the information screen.

Operational features include:
Phone numbers of incoming calls are displayed on the audio 5-inch color LCD screen or Display Audio screen

  • Pressing the steering wheel-mounted "Pick up" button answers the call and mutes the audio system
  • The caller is heard through the audio-system speakers
  • An overhead microphone picks up the driver's voice while minimizing background noise and echoing
  • Numbers with voice tags may be stored in the system's memory
  • To make a hands-free call, the driver first activates the system using the steering wheel-mounted fingertip controls, then speaks a preset voice tag
  • Numbers can also be dialed by speaking the telephone number
  • Automatic import of phone book and call history
  • Up to five different compatible mobile phones can be paired with the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system

Multi-Information Display (MID)
The HR-V instrument panel provides important vehicle information via a Multi-Information Display (MID) positioned to the right of the speedometer. The Select/Reset knob in the instrument cluster allows the driver to cycle the MID display through multiple screens of information from sources. The Maintenance Minder™ system alerts the HR-V driver of upcoming maintenance needs via the MID and should a fault occur with the vehicle, specific warning information will appear.
