Honda Reports on its Environmental Performance in North America

  • Honda's U.S. fleet-average fuel economy is 14% better than industry average
  • Manufacturing plants reduced total waste to lowest levels in six years
  • CO2e emission from service parts shipments is lowest in decade

Honda today released data detailing the company's environmental activities in North America, disclosing the results of its efforts to mitigate the environmental impacts of its operations in the region in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2020 (FY 2020).

New this year, the company is releasing its North American environmental data from its manufacturing efforts, as well as the in-use data regarding its products. In place of a narrative report, the data is being made available via Honda's CSR website, along with highlights of Honda's environmental activities, including water use, greenhouse gas emissions and waste and air emissions resulting from the company's operations.

This marks the 16th consecutive year that Honda has released detailed data on the environmental impact of its operations in North America. Additional information on Honda's environmental initiatives in the region can be found on the Honda Corporate Social Responsibility website.

2020 North American Environmental Highlights:

Products In-Use

    • For model year 2019, the unadjusted average fuel economy of the company's U.S. automobile fleeti decreased 3.6%, to 37.5 mpg, but remains 14% higher (better than) the industry average of 32.9 mpg.
    • In the same period, the unadjusted average CO2 emissions for the company's U.S. automobile fleet isii 11.9% below (better than) the industry average of 269 g/mi.
    • The average fuel economy of Honda U.S. motorcycle fleetiii in model year 2019 was up 10.7% from a year ago.


    • The total location-based CO2e emissions from North American manufacturing decreased 4.5% to its lowest level in seven years. The CO2e emissions intensity (emissions per auto) from North American manufacturing of automobiles decreased 1.6%, while the emissions intensity of power equipment production decreased 3.9% to its lowest levels in a decade.
    • Total solid waste from manufacturing activity in the region was reduced 6.2% to its lowest level in six years.
    • Total water use in manufacturing fell 3.3% to 1.31 million gallons, which is a five-year low.
    • VOC emissions from auto body painting decreased 1.2% to its lowest level in a decade.

Sales and Service

    • Ninety-nine percent of the waste from Honda's 12 U.S. parts warehousing and distribution centers was recycled in FY19.
    • The CO2 emissions intensity of North American service parts shipments fell 4.2% from a year ago, and has been reduced 49.7% over the past decade.

Honda Environmental Commitment

Honda's vision for a carbon-free society is leading to comprehensive efforts to address society's environmental and energy concerns across the company's products and business operations. Honda has the highest fleet average fuel economy and lowest CO2 emissions of any major full-line automaker in America, according to the latest data from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Honda also is working to reduce the environmental impact of its business operations and promotes environmentally responsible business practices with its suppliers and retail dealer partners across North America. 

In 2019, Honda announced two Virtual Power Purchase Agreements (VPPAs) that will secure 320 megawatts (MW) of wind and solar power totaling over 1 million megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually. This enables the company to fully offset the remaining carbon intensive grid-supplied electricity used in its Ohio, Indiana, and Alabama automobile manufacturing operations.
