At American Honda headquarters in Torrance, Calif., a committee called the "Green Team" has been quietly working for the past two years to help clean up the environment and educate the public on environmental issues.
The Green Team targets improvement in various areas including electricity and fuel consumption, recycling, and reduction of hazardous waste and water usage.
"Each of the Team members seeks out a way to continually streamline a process or develop a new program within their assigned area," said Maria Paulson, industrial hygienist, Safety/Environmental department at American Honda and Green Team member. "We hope to further educate people on Honda's commitment to preserving the environment at every level."
The Honda Green Team coordinated the first annual Earth Day event at American Honda, attracting 642 associates and 24 vendors. Earth Day was also the kick-off for an all-office wastepaper recycling program initiated by a member of the Green Team. In just the first few months, wastepaper recycling increased by 24 percent.
The Green Team also launched Honda's first Household Hazardous Waste Roundup for the community of Torrance. More than 1,800 people dropped off 144,000 pounds of hazardous waste.
The Green Team has also implemented a garden-planting project with Carson Elementary and Yukon Elementary schools, helped to clean up Redondo Beach, is completing the installation of 71 automatic flush valves at the Torrance facility to reduce water usage and the installation of warehouse motion sensors at the Moorestown, N.J. facility to reduce electricity use by five percent.
