Honda Waste Reduction Efforts Earn State Recognition

American Honda's Torrance, Calif. headquarters was honored by the California Integrated Waste Management Board (CIWMB) as a 1999 Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) winner.

CIWMB, the state's primary recycling agency, recognizes companies that develop creative and aggressive programs to reduce the waste they generate. According to CIWMB, businesses generate more than half the state's waste, so reducing that makes a big difference to the environment while saving money in production and disposal costs.

In announcing the winners of the seventh annual WRAP, Waste Board Chairman Dan Eaton said, "I am pleased to recognize the outstanding and innovative efforts of these companies to reduce, reuse, recycle and buy recycled [products] as part of their standard business operations."

Honda's waste reduction program has been led by its "Green Office" initiative and in 1998 had great success in recycling 822 tons of paper, plastic, glass and cardboard.

"Doing things like recycling to help the environment has always been a focus at Honda," said John Savage, administrator, records management for Honda. "Receiving this award is recognition of our efforts."

In the past year, 822 tons of paper, plastic, glass and cardboard has been recycled at American Honda's Torrance, Calif. headquarters.
