High-Tech, 70-mpg Honda Hybrid to be Named 'Insight'

What's in a name?

If it's the cleanest and most fuel-efficient gasoline-powered vehicle ever offered to American consumers, the name will be the Honda Insight.

The Insight, a gasoline-electric hybrid jammed pack with tomorrow's technology, will be the first vehicle of its kind to be available to consumers when it goes on sale in the United States this December.

According to the dictionary, "Insight" means, "understanding, or the power of seeing into a situation."

And according to Tom Elliott, executive vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., "This vehicle shows the way to developing products that meet customer expectations for quality, comfort and driving enjoyment, while responding to society's need for cleaner and more fuel-efficient vehicles."

The Insight features Honda's innovative Integrated Motor Assist (IMA™) hybrid system, inside a rigid and lightweight aluminum body structure, with world-class aerodynamic design and advanced ultra-low emissions technology. This combination makes the Honda Insight capable of averaging more than 70 miles per gallon (EPA combined estimate) while meeting California's stringent Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) standard.

The two-seater coupe goes on sale this December as a 2000 model.
