Honda BF135 and BF150: Exclusive Designs and Advanced Technology

Honda Marine's BF135 and BF150 horsepower (hp) outboards set the stage for a new generation of marine engine technology. Featuring advanced in-line four-cylinder architecture, they draw from decades of Honda automotive and racing experience.

Based on the same reliable automotive engine that powers the Honda Accord, CR-V, and Element, the BF135 and BF150 are designed for efficiency and reliability. The pair features a unique set of advantages to provide power and reliability with less noise than other engines in their class. Additionally, low fuel consumption and reduced maintenance over time minimize the overall cost of ownership.

Honda BF150

The 2.4L, in-line 4-cylinder BF150 boasts Honda's exclusive Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™); Lean Burn Control and Three Way Cooling Systems; Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC) and the exclusive Dual Stage Induction System.

Derived from racing and first appearing on the Acura NSX sports car, VTEC™ utilizes mild cam lobes to operate the intake valves at low rpm, and then engages a high-output lobe for high-rpm operation. The resulting boost in available power provides outstanding mid-range acceleration.

Honda's exclusive Lean Burn Control automatically adjusts the engine's air/fuel mix according to speed and load, maximizing fuel efficiency in "cruise mode." Additionally, a top-mounted oxygen (O2) sensor partners with the engine command system to deliver optimal fuel economy under any conditions.

To ensure long term durability, Honda engineers designed the first individually-controlled cylinder cooling system for outboard engines - Three Way Cooling. The system reduces engine heat by allowing the cylinder head to run slightly cooler than the engine block, greatly reducing engine wear.

Dual Overhead Camshafts (DOHC) create added valve lift and greater air flow for higher horsepower, while the engine's roller/rocker arms generate less friction and wear, resulting in longer engine life. Unlike traditional DOHC designs, Honda valves are easy to adjust and contain no trial-and-error bucket shims.

An exclusive Dual Stage Induction System uses a plenum chamber with twin butterfly valves for low-speed drivability and high-speed performance. At low speeds, air passes through a long intake runner for increased low-end torque. At more than 3,500 rpm, shutter valves open to shorten the air's path and boost air flow for higher horsepower. While other four-stroke engines use long intake manifolds to deliver air to the cylinder head, Honda's innovative design maximizes combustion efficiency.

Finally, the BF150 features a 2.14:1 gear ratio; a belt-driven 51-amp alternator that offers the best charging in its class; engine oil cooler; stainless steel components and a patented 4-Front Corrosion Protection System to create an extremely reliable and rugged power plant.

Honda BF135

Similar to the BF150, the powerful, compact, 2.4 liter BF135 boasts Lean Burn Control and Three-Way Cooling Systems; Dual Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) Technology and Dual Stage Induction to make it unbeatable in its class.

Like its 150hp sibling, the BF135 engine uses Multi-Port Programmed Fuel Injection to deliver a precise amount of air/fuel to each cylinder under all operating speeds and conditions. This translates to quick starts, instant throttle response, powerful performance, and low fuel consumption.

The BF150 and BF135 are available in 20- and 25-inch shaft lengths. All new Honda outboard engines sold for recreational use offer an industry-best True 5-year, non-declining limited factory warranty that is the same on the last day as it is on the first.

Honda Marine pioneered four-stroke engine technology, setting a new benchmark for fuel efficiency, quiet operation, and low emissions. Honda's outboards share the same unparalleled durability, quality, and reliability of its legendary automobiles. With models ranging from 2 to 225 horsepower, Honda Marine's full line of current production models meets rigorous California Air Resources Board (CARB) 3-Star standards, ensuring their availability and regulatory compliance in all 50 states.
