Honda Marine HDS: Engine Diagnostics in the Palm of the Hand

Honda Marine recently introduced its Honda Diagnostic System (HDS), a hand-held iPAQ-based device that quickly and easily detects problems and related maintenance issues with Honda BF135, BF150, BF200 and BF225 EFI engines.

Unveiled earlier this fall, HDS underscores Honda Marine's commitment to exceptional customer service by adding increased value to Honda outboard engine ownership.

A Portable, Hand-Held Diagnostic Tool
Developed by Honda Engineering Research and Development during the past five years, HDS is a lightweight, compact diagnostic tool that uses a Honda Interface Module (HIM) coupled with an iPAQ personal digital assistant (PDA) to decipher Trouble Codes recorded by the Engine Control Module (ECM). Trouble Codes are relayed to the device, where they are displayed along with brief explanations of their associated component and circuit failure statuses.

The unit also allows users to view real-time ECM input and output information in the form of a Data List that displays information such as engine speed, throttle opening and engine coolant temperature at the time of failure, giving technicians a fuller
understanding of the situation. Operators have the option to view individual pieces or groups of data via the unit's LCD screen.

Beyond real-time Data List capability, HDS's Snapshot Mode allows technicians to select specific data items to record, from 30 seconds up to three minutes. Data recording may be automatically triggered when particular symptoms occur or when certain conditions are present. For example, an operator may choose to record only when coolant temperature is more than 200oF, or when RPM exceeds 5,500.

HDS affords Honda Marine customers the opportunity to view an instant record of their engine's current condition, as well as out-of-range parameters that may indicate a need for service. The unit's portability and water-resistance allow engine check-ups to be performed at sea as well as in dry dock, keeping Honda owners on the water - where they want to be.

"Honda continually perfects its marine engine line by incorporating technologies from our highly advanced automotive and racing heritage," said Paul Sabourin, national service manager, Honda Marine. "With HDS, this superior level of technological innovation provides Honda marine customers unprecedented insight into the health of their engines, helping technicians and boat owners maximize product performance."

Honda Marine introduced the first full line of 4-stroke outboard engines in the United States, setting a new benchmark for ease of starting, quiet operation, and low emissions. Honda's outboards are characterized by the unparalleled durability, quality, and reliability behind its legendary automobiles. With models ranging from 2 to 225 horsepower, the company offers the most ultra-low emission engines in the industry.
