2007 Honda BF75/BF90 Marine Engine General Overview

Honda Marine BF75/BF90 EFI

Introduction

To meet or exceed customer expectations, Honda engineers strive for continuous improvement - providing new and innovative features to improve Honda products. When the experts at Honda Marine realized that an increasing number of boaters desired programmed electronic fuel injected (PGM-FI) outboards in the mid-horsepower range, the design began for a revolutionary model incorporating this feature. Honda engineers also recognized boaters' need for an explosive hole shot and exceptional fuel economy. The BF75/BF90 delivers on both.

Performance

The new BF75 and BF90 are completely redesigned. Their high performance gear case with a low 2.33:1 gear ratio, coupled with Honda's revolutionary Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) system creates a strong hole shot while the exclusive Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™ - BF90) ensures top performance and fuel economy at all RPM levels.

Economy

New to the BF75/BF90 is an multi-port electronic fuel injection (EFI) fuel delivery system. Coupled with a dynamic engine control module, EFI delivers top fuel economy in a lightweight package.

Efficiency

Utilizing an oxygen (O2) sensor, Honda's exclusive Lean Burn Control system automatically adjusts the air/fuel mix according to speed and load, delivering unsurpassed efficiency.

Durability

With a first-of-its-kind 3-Way Cooling System, the BF75/BF90 reduces engine heat by allowing the cylinder head to run slightly cooler than the engine block, improving long-term durability.

Proven Engine Technology

The BF75/BF90's 1.5L, SOHC, 16-valve,In-Line 4-cylinder VTEC™ (BF90) engine is inspired by the same remarkable engine powering Honda's top-selling Fit automobile (sold as the Jazz in Europe). Honda's number one selling vehicle globally, the Fit/Jazz has proven itself time and again to be economical, efficient and durable.

Honda Marine BF75/90 EFI Glossary Of Terms*
Boosted Low Speed Torque (BLAST) Advances ignition timing during acceleration, resulting in explosive hole shots.
Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC™) BF90 A Honda exclusive, VTEC™ utilizes mild cam lobes to operate the intake valves at low rpm, then engages a high output cam lobe at high RPM. This state-of-the-art, exclusive design provides a unique blend of power, torque and efficiency at any speed.
Lean Burn Control Utilizes an oxygen (O2) sensor along with the Engine Command System to automatically adjust the air/fuel mix according to speed and load while maximizing power throughout the acceleration range and providing greater fuel economy in the cruise mode from 2500 to 4000 rpm.
High-Performance Gear Case Design The BF75/BF90's hydrodynamically superior gear case features an enlarged bullet and drag-reducing new anti-splash and anti-ventilation plates
44 amp Alternator (35 Amps Charging) Keeps battery banks charged all day, even when running multiple accessories
3-Way Cooling System The first individual controlled cooling system for outboard engines, 3-Way Cooling reduces engine heat, allowing the cylinder head to run slightly cooler than the cylinder block, greatly reducing engine wear.
Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC) In-Line 4-Cylinder 4-Valve Design Uses a single overhead cam with dual intake valves to deliver an optimal air/fuel mixture for maximum torque and combustion efficiency.
4-Front Corrosion Protection A patented double-sealed, multi-layer paint process fights off corrosion from harsh marine environments. The base is a Honda aluminum alloy, followed by a double-sealed treatment, an epoxy primer undercoat, and an acrylic resin metallic coating, finished with a clear overcoat of acrylic.
Torsion Dampener Sometimes called a flywheel, the torsion dampener is positioned at the base of the powerhead to lower the center of gravity for more stability, smoother handling and improved hull maneuverability.
Top-Mounted Electronics The alternator, ignition and other critical components are mounted near the top of the powerhead to ensure all are kept cool and dry.
Sealed Starter Motor Inverted into a sealed chamber to protect the starter bendix drive from the elements.
Patented, Non-Linear Rubber Mounts Provide smoother operation at all engine speeds.
Multiple Cowl Latch Points Easy to open front and back latches ensure a water-tight seal for superior protection.
Engine Alert System Monitors vital engine functions and alerts the operator, with a light, buzzer and/or rpm reduction, of any problems
Engine Command System Constantly accepts input from 18 different sensors. The system delivers instant starts, smooth operation, strong performance and excellent fuel efficiency.
Multi-Port, Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) Delivers precise amounts of air/fuel to each cylinder, resulting in quick starts, instant throttle response and low fuel consumption. PGM-FI employs microprocessor technology to accurately control ignition timing during start-up and across the entire rpm range, providing optimum overall operation.
Built-In Pitot Tube Eliminates the need to drill holes in the boat for installation.
