Victory for HPD Honda Civic Type R, Podiums for HPD Civic Si at Watkins Glen

  • Kevin Boehm finishes first in his HPD Honda Civic Type R in Sunday’s SRO TC race at Watkins Glen International, and podiums on Saturday
  • Carter Fartuch podiums in both weekend races in the HPD Honda Civic Si FE1, continuing season-long podium-finish streak
  • HPD Honda Civic Si takes three of the five top-five TCA class finishes on Saturday and Sunday; HPD Honda Civic Type R takes three of the top-five TC class finishes on Sunday

Kevin Boehm took his sixth SRO TC class victory in the Skip Barber Racing School HPD Honda Civic Type R this Sunday, and podiumed in Saturday’s opening race of the doubleheader weekend at Watkins Glen International.

Meanwhile, Carter Fartuch piloted the new HPD Honda Civic Si FE1 to a double-podium weekend in the TCA class. Both drivers have landed on the podium every race this season and lead the 2022 TC America series points standings in their respective classes.

TC Honda Civic Type R
The seventh round of the SRO TC America powered by Skip Barber series kicked off with Boehm starting in third place, defending his position from close-following Nicholas Barbato and Matthew Ibrahim for the first quarter of the race. Around 13 minutes in, however, second-place Jeff Ricca pulled over to the left-hand side of the start/finish straight, leading to a full-course yellow and moving Boehm to second, which he defended through the end of the race.

On Sunday, Boehm started further back in the grid at fifth, staying close behind Barbato, Ibrahim and Ricca for the first 10 minutes of the race. However, mid-corner contact between Ricca and Ibrahim caused Ibrahim to spin out in front of Boehm and Barbato, who both narrowly avoided a collision. Following the incident, Boehm passed Barbato and Ricca, and started closing the gap between himself and leader Clay Williams. Boehm managed to pass Williams with just 5 minutes remaining and finish first.

Three HPD Civic Type Rs finished in the top five Sunday, despite starting at the latter half of the grid Sunday: Boehm, who made up four places to finish in first; teammate Ken Fukuda, who moved up three positions to fourth; and Mat Pombo with LA Honda World Racing, who moved up four positions to fifth.

TCA Honda Civic Si
Carter Fartuch drove his Skip Barber Racing School HPD Honda Civic Si FE1 to a podium finish Saturday and Sunday with second- and third-place finishes, working his way up four places in both races. Fartuch has landed on the TCA class podium every race this season.

On Saturday, Spencer Bucknum started third in his LA Honda World 10th-gen HPD Civic Si, trading places among the top three positions throughout the race. Bucknum was in the lead with just seven minutes remaining when a flat tire led him to the pits, putting him in fourth place by the end of the race. Meanwhile, Colin Harrison powered his Skip Barber Racing School 10th-gen HPD Civic Si to fifth, putting the third Honda in the top five positions.

Sunday’s race also wrapped with three HPD Honda Civic Si race machines in the top five, with Fartuch finishing third, Mike Lamarra finishing fourth in the LA Honda World Racing 10th-gen HPD Civic Si, and Sally McNulty finishing fifth in the VGRT Racing Team 10th-gen Honda Civic Si.

Quote
Kevin Boehm (#9 Skip Barber Racing School Honda Civic Type R) TC race winner Sunday: “You don’t go into many races thinking that you don’t have a chance to win, but today I honestly was just trying to get to the podium, and I was going to be really happy if we could just do that. Sometimes the race just goes your way, little moments at a time. It was a lot of just being in the right place at the right time, but we just had a really great car to put us in a position to get lucky. I can’t thank the Skip Barber Racing Team enough for a great car all weekend. I’m so happy to get CrowdStrike and AWS on the top step again today.”
