HPD Honda Civic Type Rs and Si Earn Win, Seven Podiums in Austin

  • Kevin Boehm claims second win of 2021 campaign
  • Eric Powell cards pair of runner-up finishes in TC class
  • Carter Fartuch second in TCA event on Sunday

The HPD Honda Civic Si and Type R racers continued their early-season success this weekend as Honda-powered drivers earned a victory and seven podium finishes in Rounds 3 and 4 of the TC America championship held at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas.

Kevin Boehm became the first TC driver to win multiple races as his Sunday victory was his second of the campaign. Eric Powell, who has a win of his own this year, stayed in the thick of the title hunt with a pair of second-place results while Mike LaMarra finished third in Saturday’s rain-shortened event.

In TCA, Carter Fartuch led a strong weekend for the Honda Civic Si contingent as his second-place run on Sunday paced three drivers that earned podium results in the class. Fartuch, Mike Stillwagon and Jose Blanco all stood on the podium this weekend, marking Honda’s best finishes of the season in the TCA class.

Boehm wasted no time on Sunday as he and Powell both passed Saturday winner Jeff Ricca on the first lap and roared away from the rest of the field. Boehm, who moved up to TC this year, and Powell bested the field by more than 12 seconds on their way to a 1-2 sweep.

“The team never stops trying to find the little things and it helps on and off the track,” said Boehm, “It’s a really strong crew and I couldn’t be happier.”

The Honda team was equally strong in Saturday deluge, threatening for the overall race win as wet conditions gave the Civic Type-Rs the advantage over the rear-wheel-drive TCX machines. Powell led at the race’s halfway point but yielded to Ricca and came home second, one spot ahead of LaMarra’s LA Honda World machine. Lindsay Brewer made it four top-10 runs in four starts in TC, while Frank Szczesnick made his first starts of the year, with a best result of 11th.

Carter Fartuch came from seventh on the starting grid to lead in Sunday’s TCA race before settling for a season-best second-place, while Mike Stillwagon punctuated his best weekend of the season with a third-place run, gaining a spot from his fourth-place finish to open the weekend. Jose Blanco of VGMC Racing earned Honda’s first TCA podium of the year on Saturday when he finished a season-high third. Sally McNulty tallied two eighth-place finishes while Mario Biundo scored a pair of top-10 results as well.
