2003 Honda Indy V-8 Engine
HI3R Series
- Honda's engine for the 2003 IRL IndyCar Series is designated the HI3R Series Indy V-8. This engine is a completely new design developed in partnership with Ilmor Engineering.
- The HI3R is Honda's first normally aspirated IndyCar racing engine, intended for competition in the Indianapolis 500 and the IRL IndyCar Series.
- Prior to entering the IRL, Honda previously took part in the Championship Auto Racing Teams series from 1994-2002, where the company won four CART Manufacturers' Championships (1996, 1998, 1999 and 2001) and six consecutive drivers' titles (1996-2001).
- Teams and drivers utilizing the Honda HI3R engine in 2003 include Andretti Green Racing with Michael Andretti, Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan; Super Aguri Fernandez Racing with Atlantic graduate Roger Yasukawa; and Team Rahal with former IRL series champion and Indy 500 race winner Kenny Brack.
