Compact, capable and famously reliable, the Recon is available in two versions—standard and ES, the latter featuring Honda’s Electric Shift Program technology (ESP). Both are planned in Georgia, developed in Ohio and produced in North Carolina using domestic and globally sourced parts.

HISTORY
Originally introduced for the 1997 model year, Honda’s FourTrax Recon was a sales success right off the bat. As with some other Honda ATVs, this light-utility model featured longitudinal engine mounting, resulting in an efficient drivetrain with few right angles. There have been minor updates over the years, including a new skid plate in 2012 and refreshed bodywork in 2021, but through its three decades on the market, the elements responsible for the Recon’s continued popularity have remained consistent: surprising performance and utility with a contained footprint.

DESIGN / STYLING
Showcasing a compact, no-nonsense design that reflects its practical nature and dependable performance, the Recon has a bold stance and clean, functional lines, striking a balance between agility and toughness. Its steel front and rear racks add to its utilitarian aesthetic while also offering real-world capability, as they’re capable of carrying up to 33 pounds (front) and 66 pounds (rear).
Attention to detail is evident in features like the high-traction floorboards that help deflect debris while providing confident footing. The LED taillight and brake light are bright and durable, enhancing visibility in low-light conditions.
For the 2027 model year, the Recon is available in Hero Red and Black Forest Green.
ENGINE / DRIVETRAIN
At the heart of the Recon is a famously reliable, air-cooled 250-class four-stroke single-cylinder engine, with 68.5mm x 62.2mm bore-and-stroke figures resulting in a 229cc displacement. The two overhead valves are operated by a rocker arm and push rod. Induction is via a 22mm carburetor, and the compression ratio is 9.2:1.
The overhead valves, along with a semi-dry-sump configuration, contribute to a compact design, which in turn contributes to excellent ground clearance and a low center of gravity, for predictable handling. The engine is longitudinally mounted, aligning the crankshaft with the direction of travel, which reduces friction by eliminating unnecessary right angles in the drivetrain; this results in an efficient transfer of power to the wheels. A dependable shaft-drive system minimizes maintenance, and push-button electric starting makes operation easy, with a recoil starter included as a backup.
Two transmission options cater to different rider preferences: the standard Recon features a semiautomatic five-speed-plus-reverse foot-shift gearbox, while the Recon ES offers a convenient push-button Electric Shift Program (also with five speeds plus reverse). For simplicity and convenience, the reverse mechanism and parking brake are both mounted on the left side of the handlebar and are easy to operate.
CHASSIS / SUSPENSION
The Recon features an independent double-wishbone front-suspension design with 5.1 inches of wheel travel. At the rear, the swingarm system uses a single shock absorber delivering 4.9 inches of wheel travel, for a smooth, stable ride across varied terrain.
The front wheels are fitted with 22x7-11 tires, while 22x10-9 tires are on the rear wheels. A pair of hydraulically operated 130mm drum brakes are fitted on the front wheels; at the rear, a single sealed 140mm drum brake is mechanically operated.
The Recon’s wheelbase is 44.5 inches, and overall length is 75.0 inches. Overall height and width are 42.1 inches and 40.7 inches, respectively, while seat height and ground clearance are 31.2 inches and 6.0 inches. Curb weight (including all required fluids and a full tank of fuel) is 437 pounds for the standard Recon, 443 pounds for the ES version.
