Renowned for its rugged reliability and work-ready capability, Honda’s FourTrax Foreman 4x4 midsize utility ATV is proudly made in the USA—planned in Georgia, developed in Ohio and produced in Swepsonville, North Carolina. Designed to handle demanding jobs while remaining comfortable and easy to operate, the Foreman combines proven engineering with practical features that benefit hardworking ranchers, outdoor enthusiasts and everyone in between. From its durable chassis and strong towing capability to its intuitive controls and dependable powertrain, every aspect of the FourTrax Foreman 4x4 reflects Honda’s commitment to producing ATVs that perform day after day, season after season. Available in two iterations—standard, and a version with Honda’s speed- and torque-sensitive Electric Power Steering (EPS) technology.

HISTORY
Across four decades, the Honda Foreman 4x4 name has become synonymous with hard work as the multipurpose ATV helps the American workforce to be more productive.

Born back in 1987 as the FourTrax 350D, the model originally had a 329cc air-cooled, single-cylinder engine, front and rear racks, a high-output 310-watt alternator and an 850-pound towing capacity, helping to quickly establish it as a go-to multipurpose ATV. For the 1995 model year, Honda introduced the Foreman name and gave the ATV a torquey, longitudinally mounted 395cc engine, whose overhead-valve design shortened the overall height, permitting more ground clearance and a low center of mass. The model also weighed as much as 50 pounds less than its rivals.

Three years later, the updated Foreman was available in two versions: the manual-shift Foreman S and the electric-shift Foreman ES, the latter of which was named ATV of the Year by ATV Magazine. The Electric Shift Program gearbox (ESP) offered the convenience of an automatic transmission with the durability and engine braking of a conventional transmission, allowing riders to change gears with the push of a button.

An all-new, bigger-displacement FourTrax Foreman came on the scene in 2005, featuring a completely new engine and frame, and offered in variations with two-wheel-drive and four-wheel drive, traditional shifting and ESP. All shared a new air-cooled, overhead-valve 475cc four-stroke engine, a super-heavy-duty automatic clutch and a patented dual-oil-cooler system. The chassis was new as well, boasting dual front hydraulic disc brakes, next-generation shocks and updated styling. The 4WD versions featured a host of sophisticated amenities, including TraxLok and Honda’s torque-sensing front differential.

Two years later, the Foreman 4x4 became the world’s first ATV to be offered with electric power steering, and for the 2012 model year, it received an all-new liquid-cooled, fuel-injected 475cc engine, as well as a new rear-suspension system and hydraulic disc brakes. The next year brought a new chassis and bodywork.

For the 2020 model year, Honda’s FourTrax Foreman 4x4 benefited from an engine-displacement increase to 518cc and several convenience-focused updates, including an improved reverse-gear-actuation mechanism and compatibility with the Honda Pro-Connect ecosystem of accessories.

TRIM LEVELS

  • FourTrax Foreman 4x4: The standard Foreman 4x4 is a no-nonsense, reliable ATV for both work and recreation, offering the ability to shift between 2WD and 4WD with ease. This trim is ideal for riders who need a tough and dependable ATV for hauling, towing or trail riding.
  • FourTrax Foreman 4x4 EPS: This configuration includes Electric Power Steering (EPS) for easier maneuvering, especially at low speeds or when navigating tough terrain.

DESIGN / STYLING
The ergonomics of the FourTrax Foreman 4x4 are engineered for a riding position that allows ideal rider mobility, control, comfort and safety, with a contoured, comfortable seat for long days of work or play.

The LCD display is easy to read and provides information on up to 13 functions. A 50-watt LED assist light operates independently of the headlights for additional illumination when needed, but with the ability to be switched off when not needed (such as to prevent reflection off of front cargo).

A 1.9-liter utility box with a weatherproof cover is designed to keep sundries like a phone, map or camera within easy access from the riding position (when stopped), complementing the utility box that is positioned within easy reach on the left front fender.

Front and rear cargo racks have capacities of 88 pounds and 176 pounds, respectively, and accept Honda Pro-Connect accessories for smooth integration. The full line of Pro-Connect accessories is designed for integrated function, with a precise fit and simple attachment with quick-connection latch system.

For protection, guards extend the length of the lower suspension arms, for full coverage of the driveshaft and outboard CV joints.

ENGINE / DRIVETRAIN
The 518cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder, four-stroke engine delivers strong power and torque where it’s used most—in the low end and midrange—for quick acceleration, strong ascending and excellent hauling and towing. The engine has bore and stroke figures of 96.0mm and 71.5mm, respectively. It’s compact, with a low height that helps centralize mass for optimum handling, and a narrow width that allows for a comfortable rider compartment. The programmed electronic fuel injection system provides clean, responsive power delivery and great fuel efficiency.

Honda TraxLok® allows the rider to easily switch between 2WD and 4WD riding with the flip of an electronic switch; 4WD with locking front differential (also engaged electronically) maximizes traction over very rough terrain. Speed Override mode in TraxLok delivers good performance in deep mud and other extreme terrain, by allowing faster wheel speed with the front differential locked. A strong AC generator produces enough power to run electrical accessories. The engine and exhaust system are rubber-mounted, minimizing vibration.

The FourTrax Foreman 4x4 has a manual transmission with five speeds plus reverse. Gear changes are executed via a foot-shift lever, and there’s no need to operate a clutch lever. It complies with California requirements for year-round legal use in public off-road riding areas. Towing capacity is 848 pounds.

CHASSIS / SUSPENSION
The steel double-cradle frame is engineered for an optimum balance of stiffness, compliance and torsional rigidity for precise handling and a comfortable ride.

Available Electric Power Steering makes for minimal steering effort (especially beneficial when the front differential is locked), adjusting for vehicle speed and the steering force being exerted by the rider. EPS also reduces kickback through the handlebar. The system’s three-point mounting helps to deliver precise steering.

The axle bearings and front-suspension ball joints are fully serviceable, and the solid rear axle is fully enclosed.

Suspension
The independent double-wishbone front-suspension system provides 7.3 inches of axle travel. At the rear, swingarm-style suspension is great for towing, as tongue weight rests directly on the sprung swingarm. It also minimizes body roll and contributes to a low center of gravity. Suspension geometry yields 7.3 inches of axle travel and 7.5 inches of ground clearance.

The shock absorbers have adjustable spring preload, allowing suspension tuning to match the preferred riding style or loads carried.

Brakes
Dual 190mm front hydraulic disc brakes and a single rear sealed 160mm mechanical drum brake provide strong stopping power. The parking brake is convenient and easy to set.
