HISTORY
Originally released as the FourTrax Rincon for the 2003 model year, Honda’s flagship multipurpose ATV had a 649cc single-cylinder engine and couple of firsts for the brand: an automobile-style automatic transmission and a fully independent rear-suspension system. For 2006, displacement increased to 675cc, thanks to the bore growing 2mm to 102mm. Other updates included a new camshaft, a new exhaust system and electronic fuel injection. Renamed for 2024, the FourTrax Rubicon 700 4x4 Automatic received updated bodywork, a tougher front bumper, new cast-aluminum black wheels, larger (26-inch) Maxxis tires, a new meter, improved lighting and more storage and cargo capacity.
DESIGN / STYLING
The FourTrax Rubicon 700 4x4 Automatic boasts a strong, bold form language that aligns with the look of the smaller Foreman Rubicon. Built for performance and practicality, the 700 features a 5.2-liter rear storage box and an additional 1.8-liter front compartment. The cast-aluminum black wheels balance durability with lightweight construction and a clean, aggressive look, while a tough front bumper provides solid protection. Visibility and lighting are thoughtfully engineered, with a handlebar-mounted LED assist light adding exceptional illumination, with both high- and low-beam functionality. The large LCD meter has a high-contrast white background, large text and an antifog treatment, for clear readability in varied conditions. This model also supports Honda’s modular Pro-Connect accessory lineup, including items like a multi-tool holder, cargo box and utility basket, for maximum versatility. The front and rear racks can carry 99 and 187 pounds, respectively, making the FourTrax Rubicon 700 4x4 Automatic just as suited for hauling gear as it is for exploring the backcountry.
ENGINE / DRIVETRAIN
Honda’s largest-displacement ATV, the Rubicon 700 4x4 Automatic is powered by a powerful, liquid-cooled, 675cc single-cylinder engine with four overhead valves and a semi-dry-sump design—the same engine from Honda’s hardworking Pioneer 700 side-by-side. Its compact dimensions result in good ground clearance and a low center of gravity. Longitudinally mounting (with the crankshaft oriented in the direction of travel) minimizes friction in the drivetrain by reducing right angles, allowing an efficient power transfer to the wheels.
Programmed electronic fuel injection (PGM-FI) with a 40mm throttle body ensures consistent performance in varying elevations and weather conditions, and the fuel-injection unit is positioned away from radiator heat to aid cooling. The engine features dual spark plugs for clean combustion and optimized fuel efficiency.
A three-speed automatic transmission eliminates the need for a belt or clutch. Riders can toggle between automatic and manual shifting, with the Electric Shift Program (ESP) enabling handlebar-mounted gear changes for precise control, especially in rugged terrain or when wearing heavy boots; a manual-override feature adds flexibility when in automatic mode. The 700 also uses Honda’s TraxLok system to switch seamlessly between two- and four-wheel drive, depending on the terrain.
CHASSIS / SUSPENSION
With independent rear suspension front and rear, the FourTrax Rubicon 700 4x4 Automatic delivers a comfortable ride that makes exploring trails a blast. An independent double-wishbone configuration is used front and rear, while suspension travel measures 6.9 inches 8.0 inches, respectively, helping absorb bumps and uneven terrain while maintaining stability. The model’s 9.5 inches of ground clearance and 50.6-inch wheelbase contribute to off-road capability, while a tight, 10.8-foot turning radius ensures maneuverability in tighter spaces.
The Maxxis radial tires (26x8-12 front, 26x10-12 rear) feature an aggressive tread design with substantial center and side lugs, equipping the 700 for both comfort and confident traction in a variety of conditions. Braking duties are handled by dual sealed hydraulic calipers up front and a single caliper in the rear; disc sizes are 180mm and 170mm, respectively.
