Not every job—or every adventure—calls for a full-size machine. The Pioneer 520 is Honda's answer for owners who want real capability without the bulk: a multipurpose side-by-side compact enough to navigate narrow trails or tuck into the bed of a full-size truck, yet tough enough to handle a full day's work around the farm or property. It's the rare machine that doesn't force a choice between utility and fun, proving that size isn't what separates a serious side-by-side from a casual one.
HISTORY
The smallest model in Honda's line of multipurpose side-by-sides was originally the Pioneer 500, first introduced for the 2015 model year. It quickly became popular with customers, and was joined in 2021 by the Pioneer 520, which offered 43cc additional displacement, plus a tilting cargo bed and more comfortable suspension. (The Pioneer 500 continued to be offered through 2023.) The compact, affordable and fun multipurpose side-by-side benefited from several updates for the 2026 model year, including heat-management improvements, additional storage and drivetrain refinements.
STYLING / DESIGN
Combining toughness with a penchant for fun, the Pioneer 520 has compact dimensions, with a narrow 50-inch width, a 105-inch overall length and a 73-inch wheelbase. This design is a signature characteristic and a favorite among customers, making the Pioneer 520 maneuverable in tight quarters while also allowing access to many public ATV trails; it can also be loaded into the bed of a full-size pickup truck, simplifying transportation.
Inside, comfortable seating accommodates a driver and passenger. An under-seat storage box provides space for essential items, while an under-seat cover helps minimize heat intrusion for optimum cabin comfort.
The cargo bed has interior dimensions of 25.9 inches in length, 38.7 inches in width and 9.8 inches in height, and it includes practical features like molded recesses for 5-gallon buckets, ridges for aligning milk crates, slots that accept wooden dividers, five D-rings for securing tiedowns, and cup-holder recesses integrated into the tailgate for long days on the job.
To maximize versatility, the Pioneer 520 is fully compatible with Honda's Pro-Connect™ system. Ten integrated latches around the bed's perimeter allow easy, no-tools attachment of up to nine Pro-Connect accessories—like cargo boxes, bed rails, chainsaw mounts and more. (Honda offers 41 accessories for the Pioneer 520, many of which are interchangeable with other Pro-Connect-compatible Honda ATVs and side-by-sides. This flexibility allows owners to customize their machines for a wide variety of applications.) The air cleaner and battery are both easily accessible by lifting the bed, simplifying maintenance.
With a full 4.1-gallon fuel tank, curb weight is just 1,067 pounds.
ENGINE / DRIVETRAIN
The Pioneer 520's fuel-injected, 518cc, single-cylinder four-stroke engine is tuned specifically for multipurpose side-by-side use. With bore and stroke measurements of 96.0mm and 75.3mm, the powerplant delivers strong low-to-midrange torque for climbing steep trails and handling tough chores, with cargo and towing capacities of 450 pounds and 1,000 pounds, respectively.
The longitudinally mounted engine aligns directly with the driveshafts, maximizing drivetrain efficiency. Power is delivered directly to the front and rear driveshafts, and there is no belt drive to maintain.
The five-speed automatic transmission with reverse makes driving easy, while a manual mode allows drivers to select gears using steering-column-mounted paddle shifters. In automatic mode, shift mapping favors smooth acceleration and minimal shift shock, while manual override enables more responsive performance when conditions require it. A dash-mounted knob allows seamless switching between two- and four-wheel drive on the fly.
CHASSIS / SUSPENSION
To maximize comfort and control, the Pioneer 520 is outfitted with independent double-wishbone suspension at both ends. Front- and rear-suspension travel figures are 5.8 inches and 5.9 inches, respectively, and ground clearance is 8.5 inches, providing ample capability for rough terrain. The rear suspension has adjustable preload, allowing the ride height to be tailored based on load, terrain or personal preference.
The 12-inch rims and 24-inch all-terrain tires (24x8-12 front, 24x10-12 rear) balance traction, responsive steering and tight maneuverability. Stopping power comes from dual 200mm hydraulic front disc brakes and a single 170mm hydraulic rear disc brake.
