Honda Red Riders Tackle Phoenix Supercross

The Honda Red Riders took on round two of the 2010 Supercross series at Chase Field in Phoenix, AZ on Saturday, January 16, and Honda Red Bull Racing riders Andrew Short and Davi Millsaps were right in the thick of the action aboard their Honda CRF450R® race machines.

Short quickly set out aboard his CRF450R, overcoming a mid-pack start to finish in fifth place. GEICO Powersports Honda’s Kevin Windham never let Short far from his sights and crossed the finish line in sixth spot on his CRF450R. Millsaps struggled to recover from his mid-pack start and finished ninth overall.

“In the main I felt good, though the track was deteriorating a little,” said Short. “I got a good jump off the start but didn’t go over the gate very well, which put me mid-pack. I made some good moves throughout the race to get up into fifth place. I’m in a good spot early on in the series points chase but I really want to finish on the box. I know I will be up there if I get the start right.”

In the Supercross Lites West competition, GEICO Powersports Honda’s Blake Wharton made a strong showing, leading 12 of 15 laps in the main event aboard his CRF250R®. Charging to the lead on the opening lap, the young Honda racer went on to score his first podium of the season. Wharton put on an impressive show up front until a few small errors late in the race relegated him to third place. Troy Lee Designs Honda’s Wil Hahn and Cole Seely scored their best results of the season with Hahn nabbing fourth and Seely sixth place. Wharton’s teammate Trey Canard entered the main via the Last Chance Qualifier race after he suffered a hard blow to his ankle in his heat race. Canard toughed it out in the main to finish in seventh.

“As long as I’m moving up on the results ladder each week I’m happy,” said Wharton. “At Anaheim I finished in fourth and I went one better this week and got third. I know I have what it takes to win–I proved that last season in St. Louis–and I led the Phoenix race for 12 of 15 laps. I’m confident I’ll be on the box at Anaheim next week.”
