2026 Honda Pioneer 520 Features & Benefits

From hobby farming to trail adventure, Honda's Pioneer 520 is proof that good things needn't come in large packages. The smallest multipurpose side-by-side in Honda's lineup, it nonetheless delivers when it comes to hard work, thanks to a dump bed and 1,000-pound towing capacity. At the same time, this jack-of-all trades is ready for fun, with a 518cc engine and a narrow 50-inch width that enables legal access to ATV trails. Compact, maneuverable, powerful and versatile, the Pioneer 520 can go toe-to-toe with much larger competition.

HISTORY
The smallest model in Honda's line of multipurpose side-by-sides was originally the Pioneer 500, first introduced for the 2015 model year. Immediately a top seller, it was joined for 2021 by the Pioneer 520, which offered 43cc additional displacement, plus a tilting cargo bed and more comfortable suspension. (The Pioneer 500 continued to be offered through 2023.) A compact, affordable, fun multipurpose side-by-side, the Pioneer 520 benefits from a number of updates for the 2026 model year, including heat-management improvements, additional storage and drivetrain refinements.

NEW FOR 2026

  • Revised front and rear final‑gear assemblies and transmission gearing deliver a 23% increase in top speed.
  • Updated transmission shift map reduces shift shock, for smoother gear changes and improved ride comfort.
  • Under‑seat storage (previously an accessory) now comes standard, for added convenience.
  • Heat‑management improvements reduce cabin-heat intrusion, enhancing rider comfort.

STYLING / DESIGN
Combining toughness with a penchant for fun, the Pioneer 520 is equipped for serious utility, thanks to a 450-pound cargo capacity and a 1,000-pound towing capacity. At the same time, it boasts a narrow 50-inch width, as well as a 105-inch length and a 73-inch wheelbase. This compact design is a signature element and a favorite among customers, as it allows the Pioneer 520 to legally access public ATV trails, and to be loaded into the bed of a full-size pickup truck, simplifying transportation.

The bed has interior dimensions of 25.9 inches in length, 38.7 inches in width and 9.8 inches in height, and it includes practical features like molded recesses for 5-gallon buckets, ridges for aligning milk crates, slots that accept wooden dividers, and five D-rings for securing tiedowns. There are even cup-holder rings integrated into the tailgate for long days on the job.

To maximize versatility, the Pioneer 520 is fully compatible with Honda's Pro-Connect™ system. Ten integrated latches around the bed's perimeter allow easy, no-tools attachment of up to nine Pro-Connect accessories—like cargo boxes, bed rails, chainsaw mounts and more. (In total, Honda offers 41 accessories for the Pioneer 520, many of which are interchangeable with other Pro-Connect-compatible Honda ATVs and side-by-sides, giving owners the flexibility to customize their machines to suit varying applications.) The air cleaner and battery are both easily accessible by lifting the bed, simplifying maintenance.

New for 2026, the Pioneer 520 now also comes standard with an under-seat storage box for storing essential items, as well as an updated under-seat cover for reduced heat intrusion and improved cabin comfort.

ENGINE / DRIVETRAIN
The Pioneer 520's fuel-injected, four-stroke 518cc engine is tuned specifically for the side-by-side application. With bore and stroke measurements of 96.0mm and 75.3mm, the powerplant delivers strong low-to-midrange torque, making it ideal for handling tough chores or climbing trails with confidence. The longitudinal engine mounting results in direct driveshaft alignment with the wheels for maximum drivetrain efficiency. Power is delivered directly to the front and rear driveshafts, and there is no belt drive to maintain.

The five-speed automatic transmission with reverse takes the guesswork out of shifting, while a manual mode gives the driver more control when needed, with gear changes controlled by paddle shifters on the steering column. When in automatic mode, the latest-generation mapping is calibrated to upshift at relatively low engine speeds, for limited shift shock and smooth acceleration, and manual override is available, allowing for responsive performance when the situation demands. A dash-mounted knob makes switching between two- and four-wheel drive seamless on the fly.

CHASSIS / SUSPENSION
To maximize comfort and control, the Pioneer 520 is outfitted with independent double-wishbone suspension at both ends. Front- and rear-suspension travel figures are 5.8 inches and 5.9 inches respectively, and ground clearance is 8.5 inches, plenty for tackling rough terrain. The rear suspension has adjustable preload, allowing the ride height to be tailored based on load, terrain or personal preference.

With 12-inch rims and 24-inch all-terrain tires (24x8-12 front, 24x10-12 rear), the Pioneer 520 strikes a balance between traction, responsive steering and tight maneuverability.

Delivering confident stopping power are dual hydraulic front-brake calipers with 200mm discs, along with a single hydraulic rear-brake caliper and a 170mm disc.
