Honda Riders Rack Up More Podium Spots

The Honda Red Riders took on round seven of the 2010 Supercross series at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, IN on Saturday, February 20, and Honda Red Bull Racing’s Davi Millsaps and Trey Canard (filling in for the injured Andrew Short) were in the spotlight on their Honda CRF450Rs.

From the get-go, Millsaps showed he had the speed to be up front by topping the charts in the first timed practice session, and Honda veteran Kevin Windham was not only fastest in the second session aboard his GEICO Powersports Honda prepared CRF450R, he also went on to win his heat race. In the main, Millsaps nailed the start and grabbed the holeshot, racing to the front as Windham launched an attack. The Honda duo staged an exciting duel for the lead, swapping back and forth between the number one spot until Windham eventually made the pass stick and then led for nine laps. A mid-race surge by Villopoto and Dungey put Windham into third place by the time the checkers fell, and Millsaps nabbed fifth spot ahead of another fellow Honda racer, Hart and Huntington’s Chris Blose in sixth.

“Three podiums this season, two of them coming back to back; I’m really happy with this result,” said Windham. “I can’t thank the GEICO Powersports Honda team enough for all their support. My CRF450R keeps getting better every year and to be still scoring podium finishes at 32 years of age is a testament to the support I receive from everyone around me and having the best equipment.”

Honda Red Bull Racing’s newest recruit, Trey Canard, made his Supercross debut, and it wasn’t without its share of both excitement and angst. The rookie 450 racer set a good pace and showed lots of promise aboard the CRF450R in practice and in his heat race. Unfortunately, he crashed hard on lap six in the main. Determined to continue, Canard remounted but was forced to withdraw because of bike damage sustained in the crash.

“It definitely wasn’t the debut I was hoping for, but at least I can draw some positives from this experience,” said Canard. “I know where I need to be speed-wise and I know the level of competition in the big-bike class. I really want to make the most of this amazing opportunity that’s been given to me and I’m confident that with a little more seat time on the bike this week I can deliver good results for the Honda Red Bull Racing team.”

In the Supercross Lites East competition, GEICO Powersports Honda rookie Justin Barcia made a dramatic debut by finishing third in his first-ever Supercross Lites race. Nailing the holeshot in the main, the teenaged Honda rider dropped a few spots in the early laps but charged back to grab a podium finish. Teammate Brett Metcalfe was right there in the thick of the action throughout the entire race and finished fifth.

“I can’t believe how good this feels,” said Barcia. “I knew I had it in me to finish on the podium and that was my goal for this race. To be on the box at my first Supercross race in front of all these people is just awesome. I know where I stand in terms of speed now that I’ve got the first race out of the way, and I’m really pumped for the next race in Atlanta.”
