Sections

OVERVIEW

The 2004 Acura TL stormed into the performance luxury sedan market with impressive styling, best-in-class horsepower, and a luxurious and technology-packed interior. It was an immediate hit with the motoring press and public alike, and became Acura's best-selling model, a title it holds to this day.

In the face of new competition from Lexus, BMW, Infiniti and others, the 2007 TL has been impressively updated. To solidify its place as the standard bearer in its class, the TL is now available in two versions; the luxurious TL and the reintroduced high-performance TL Type-S.

As part of its comprehensive performance package, the new TL Type-S builds on the already impressive performance of the TL with the addition of an enhanced powertrain and much more. The Type-S engine is a 286-horsepower 3.5-liter VTEC® V-6. It is connected to either a 6-speed manual transmission or an all-new 5-speed automatic with F1®-style Sequential SportShift paddle shifters and Grade Logic Control.

The Type-S isn't just a more powerful TL, it's a complete performance package that features a re-tuned suspension, unique exterior styling and interior trim that distinguishes it from the TL. Just one drive proves that the TL Type-S delivers the emotional thrill of a high performance luxury sedan without sacrificing the comfort and convenience expected from it.

TL features numerous other refinements for the 2007 model year. The re-designed front end features a larger grille, fog lights relocated to the bumper, and black chrome or satin chrome trim on the TL Type-S and TL, respectively. In addition, the tail lights and rear bumper have been re-designed for a more aggressive appearance, and new wheels, side sills, and other details set the TL apart. The TL Type-S receives a unique front fascia with a "splitter" leading edge, wider side sills and rear fascia diffuser.

The interior is also subtly revised with a new 3-spoke steering wheel, new gauges and model-specific ambient lighting that is red for TL Type-S and blue for the TL. Models without navigation systems have a restyled center console that uses vacuum fluorescent displays for the audio system and climate control.

The TL's combination of high-tech innovations like the standard 225-watt Acura/ELS Surround™ Premium 8-speaker Sound System with 6-disc CD, DVD-Audio, DTS® and Dolby® Pro Logic® II set it apart from its competitors from the moment it went on sale. The improvements for 2007 build on these strengths while adding the all-new, enthusiast-focused TL Type-S.

MARKET SUMMARY

The luxury vehicle market continues to expand, and the "near luxury" sedan segment is enjoying some of the greatest growth. This segment, which accounts for over one-third of the luxury market as a whole, is where the Acura TL competes. Although the TL has consistently been a top seller in this segment, it has increasing challenges from sporty sedans such as the BMW 530i and Lexus IS 350. Competition also comes from compact near-luxury sedans like the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-class.

HIGH PERFORMANCE POWERTRAIN

Behind the restyled grille of the 2007 TL is one of two engines. The TL receives a 3.2-liter 24-valve VTEC® V-6 powerplant, a smooth and powerful engine that delivers 258 horsepower at 6200 rpm and a broad torque curve that peaks with 233 lb-ft at 5000 rpm. The high-performance TL Type-S receives a larger-displacement 3.5-liter VTEC V-6 engine produces 286 hp at 6200 rpm and 257 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm.

The standard transmission for both the TL and TL Type-S is an all-new 5-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift and Grade Logic Control. Similar to the transmission in the RL luxury sedan, this two-wheel drive version features thicker and larger gears than the previous automatic for increased torque capacity. It is also more compact than the previous 5-speed automatic. TL Type-S models have an even more aggressive shift program, as well as the Paddle Shifters mounted on the steering wheel. The Sequential SportShift has been re-programmed to provide smooth downshifts by "blipping" the throttle between gears, matching revs and significantly improving overall driving smoothness.

Optional only on the TL Type-S is a 6-speed manual transmission. For 2007, the transmission has been strengthened for increased durability with the more powerful 3.5-liter engine.

Acura's commitment to low emissions continues. Both the 3.2-liter V-6 in the TL and the 3.5-liter V-6 in the Type-S meet stringent CARB LEV-II ULEV emissions requirements.

HIGH-TECH INTERIOR

Among the TL's firsts in 2004 was the introduction of DVD-Audio and HandsFreeLink™ wireless telephone interface as standard equipment. For 2007, the TL continues its high-tech leadership with the addition of WMA and MP3 playback, Dolby® Pro Logic® II and speed-sensitive volume compensation to the audio system.

Additionally, 2007 TL Type-S models feature standard Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™ and rearview camera as well as Active Noise Cancellation™. The navigation system is re-designed with a new, easier to read interface, and also incorporates AcuraLink™ satellite communication system with real-time traffic updates, as on the RL. On TL models without navigation, the climate control and audio system displays have been redesigned using the same vacuum fluorescent displays found on high-end home audio equipment.

STANDARD LUXURIES AND CONVENIENCES

When first introduced to the press and public, the TL impressed with its unprecedented levels of standard luxury equipment, a tradition continued by the 2007 model. With its standard 6-disc DVD-Audio system, plush leather seating surfaces, power seats for both the driver and front passenger, and keyless entry with a new One Touch Start system on models with an automatic transmission, the TL is designed to provide a truly comprehensive array of fine amenities as standard equipment. The only factory option on the TL is the DVD-based Acura Satellite-Linked Navigation System™.

EXTERIOR DESIGN

Since its 2004 introduction, the TL's clean lines have been described as "Bauhaus with attitude." Bauhaus refers to the design philosophy of form following function. The attitude comes from TL's assertive stance, large grille, narrow headlights and tasteful use of chrome highlights to impart an athletic and sporty demeanor unmatched by its competitors. The re-designed front end emphasizes performance by enlarging the grille opening and re-styling the lower fascia to incorporate the foglights. In the rear, the taillights and lower bumper valance have been redesigned. The TL Type-S incorporates special Type-S badging, a more aggressive front fascia, black chrome trim and a quad exhaust that emphasize its performance edge.

COCKPIT DESIGN

From the new 3-spoke steering wheel with integrated audio, cruise and voice navigation controls, to the new front seats that have been redesigned for improved comfort, the TL's
interior has been subtly redesigned for 2007 to be more luxurious and stylish than ever. The re-styled gauges resemble spun aluminum with laser-etched numerals, and both the TL and the TL Type-S receive redesigned aluminum trim. Blue cockpit lighting and new Grand Anigre wood patterned trim that extends from the doors into the dash enhance the luxury feel of the TL. The sporty Type-S receives red lighting, carbon fiber-look trim, and the Type-S logo on the bottom steering wheel spoke and embossed on the front headrests.

2007 Acura TL - Powertrain

Overview

Two engines are available for the 2007 TL. Under the hood of the TL is an all-aluminum 3.2-liter V-6 with 24 valves and Acura's VTEC® - Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control system. It delivers 258 horsepower and 233 lb-ft of torque.

The TL Type-S is powered by a modified version of the 3.5-liter VTEC V-6 found in the Acura RL. With more displacement than the TL engine and a high-flow exhaust system, it boasts 286 horsepower and 256 lb-ft of torque.

Both engines benefit from Acura's groundbreaking VTEC system. This patented technology provides an exceptionally flat torque curve, enhancing high-rpm horsepower without sacrificing low-end torque. The result is an engine with excellent responsiveness at all engine speeds.

The standard transmission in the TL and TL Type-S is an all-new electronically controlled 5-speed automatic. Developed from the RL's 5-speed automatic, this transmission has more torque capacity that the one it replaces, but more compact. It also features Acura's Sequential SportShift system. Inspired by Formula One® racecars, Sequential SportShift gives the driver the flexibility of a self-shifting automatic or the control of a manual. The system has been reprogrammed this year for smoother operation and enhanced gear holding capabilities. In addition, the TL Type-S "rev matches" during manually selected downshifts.

Available on Type-S models is a smooth-shifting 6-speed close-ratio manual transmission. Similar to the manual transmission on the 2006 TL, it features a re-designed bellhousing and improved clutch feel for smoother, more linear engagement.

With Acura's unwavering commitment to the environment, both TL engines meet strict CARB LEV-II ULEV standards. In addition, cold-start emissions are improved thanks to the close-coupled catalytic converter system and under-floor catalyst.

ENGINE ARCHITECTURE

TL's 24-valve 3.2-liter V-6 features all aluminum alloy construction and an inherently smooth running 60-degree V angle. The TL's cold-air intake system combines with Acura's sophisticated dual-stage intake manifold and 3-rocker VTEC® variable valve timing system, an 11:1 compression ratio and a high-flow exhaust system to make it one of the most powerful engines in its class. It delivers exceptional smoothness, refinement and low emissions. To offset the slight weight increase from the new four-shaft 5-speed automatic transmission, the intake manifold and valve covers are made of lightweight magnesium, and the oil strainer is a lightweight composite.

The 3.5-liter V-6 in the TL Type-S is based on the engine in the groundbreaking RL and incorporates many of the refinements and improvements that have been developed in other Acura powerplants. It shares the 3.2-liter V-6's 60-degree V angle, compact dimensions and weight saving use of magnesium, and also uses hollow camshafts to further save weight.

ENGINE BLOCK

Both the TL's 3.2-liter engine and the TL Type-S 3.5-liter V-6 feature die-cast lightweight aluminum alloy blocks with cast-in-place iron cylinder liners. These thin-wall liners are made with a centrifugal spin casting process, which ensures high strength and low porosity. The rough outer surface bonds the liners securely to the surrounding aluminum block, enhancing liner-to-block rigidity and heat transfer. For rigid crankshaft support and minimized noise and vibration, both blocks incorporate a deep-skirt design with four bolts per bearing cap, and both are heat-treated for greater strength.

CRANKSHAFT/ PISTONS/CONNECTING RODS

The 3.2-liter V-6 in the TL features robust bottom-end construction. The forged crankshaft is counterweighted to offset the heavy-duty 11:1 compression ratio pistons. The connecting rods are made of forged steel for added strength and durability.

The TL Type-S features much of the same internal construction. The forged crankshaft and pistons are the same as the RL. High power output is possible thanks in part to an oil jet system that sprays cooling oil on the underside of the piston crowns to keep temperatures in check. New steel connecting rods are forged in one piece and then the crankshaft ends are "snapped." This process creates a bearing cap that is a perfect fit for the rod it is mated to, and a lighter and stronger rod overall.

CYLINDER HEADS / VALVES

Cylinder heads play an important role in improving power and emissions performance. Both the TL and TL Type-S feature single overhead camshaft cylinder heads made from pressure-cast, low-porosity aluminum, which helps to keep overall engine weight down. A key feature of the heads is an integrated tuned exhaust manifold that is part of the head casting. This improves overall packaging, enhances exhaust flow, and allows the optimal positioning of the primary close-coupled catalytic converters. To ensure positive sealing, the TL and Type-S apply a three-layer head gasket like that of RL. A single Aramid-fiber reinforced belt drives the overhead camshafts. The Type-S heads also feature hollow camshafts to save weight.

VTEC® (VARIABLE VALVE TIMING & LIFT ELECTRONIC CONTROL)

Acura's VTEC® (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) gives the TL and TL Type-S engines strong low speed torque and throttle response while enhancing high-rpm power.

At low speeds, the intake valves have lower lift and are open a comparatively short period of time during cylinder filling. At high rpm where breathing is critical, the valves switch to high-lift, long duration mode to deliver the best volumetric efficiency possible.

Both engines continue to use the 3-rocker VTEC system, which allows each of a given cylinder's intake valves to be controlled by its own low-speed cam lobe. (By comparison, with 2-rocker VTEC, both intake valves in a given cylinder are controlled by a single low-speed cam lobe). With different low-speed cam profiles for each intake valve, 3-rocker VTEC allows for staggered valve opening and lift, which promotes swirl in the combustion chambers, thereby improving efficiency. With better mixing in the cylinders, burn speed and combustion stability are improved.

When engine rpm reaches 4700 rpm (4950 rpm in the TL Type-S), the powertrain control module (PCM) triggers the opening of an electric spool valve that routes pressurized oil to small pistons in the intake valve rocker arms. These pistons slide into position to lock together the three intake rockers in each cylinder, which then follow a single high-lift, long-duration cam lobes. With the engine's intake valve lift and opening duration continuously adjusted to suit the operating engine speed, the TL benefits with a broad torque curve and superior peak power. The two engines feature different cam profiles, with the Type-S sharing the same higher lift and longer duration.

COLD-AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM

Cool air is more dense than hot air and allows an engine to make more power by packing more oxygen per given volume. To capitalize on this, the TL and TL Type-S have a special cold-air induction system as standard equipment. Ambient air is picked up through an inlet in the left front fascia, and fed by a duct to the engine air intake. Depending on vehicle speed, this system supplies the engine with ambient air that is much as 15 degrees (F) cooler than typical engine compartment air.

DUAL-STAGE INTAKE MANIFOLD

The TL and TL Type-S feature lightweight magnesium dual-stage intake manifolds. Working in concert with VTEC®, this manifold improves low-speed torque without sacrificing high rpm power. The manifold is divided into two banks with three cylinders fed by each bank. The powertrain control module (PCM) controls butterfly valves between each bank. At low engine speeds the valves are closed; each separate bank of the manifold is tuned to maximize the resonance effect of the incoming air. This creates pressure waves, which are amplified within each half of the intake manifold at certain rpm ranges. These waves increase cylinder filling and torque through the lower part of the engine's rpm range. On the Type-S, funnel-shaped intake ports-similar to those used on racing engines-are built in at the uppermost end of the intake runners to improve airflow.

Since the benefits of this resonance effect fade as engine speeds rise, the butterfly valves open at 4,000 rpm to interconnect the two halves of the intake manifold plenum, thereby increasing its volume. With each cylinder drawing intake air from the full plenum chamber, the inertia mass of air rushing down each intake passage helps draw in more charge air than each cylinder would normally ingest. The effect greatly enhances cylinder filling and torque produced by the engine at higher revs.

DIRECT IGNITION AND DETONATION-KNOCK CONTROL

Optimum ignition spark timing is crucial to engine power and efficiency, and varies based on the engine's load, rpm, temperature and other factors. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors engine functions to determine the best spark timing. An engine block-mounted acoustic detonation-or knock-sensor "listens" to the engine; based on this input, the PCM retards the ignition timing incrementally to prevent potentially damaging detonation. The iridium alloy-tipped sparkplugs each have an individual coil unit positioned in the access bore directly above each plug, and require no service prior to 105,000 miles of use.

PROGRAMMED FUEL INJECTION (PGM-FI)

The Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) system tracks several engine inputs, including throttle position, intake air temperature, water temperature, intake manifold pressure and monitors the exact state of the exhaust gas. Based on these inputs, PGM-FI knows when to trigger and how long to keep open the high efficiency multi-hole injectors that deliver fuel to each cylinder.

DRIVE-BY-WIRE THROTTLE (DBW) CONTROL SYSTEM™

The TL and TL Type-S engines both feature an advanced Drive-by-Wire Throttle System™ technology that eliminates the need for a conventional throttle cable. With the driver's throttle pedal movements interpreted electronically, the precise relationship between pedal movement and throttle butterfly valve opening can be varied to suit the driving conditions. The system monitors various parameters such as pedal position, throttle position, road speed, engine speed and gear position. These inputs are then used to set the moment-to-moment relationship between the pedal position and throttle butterfly opening. By altering the amount of "gain" between the pedal and butterfly valve, significant improvements in drivability, response and fuel efficiency are possible.

The DBW system also allows the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with traction control to be fully integrated with engine function. In the TL Type-S the DBW is programmed to "blip" the throttle during downshifts with the Sequential SportShift automatic transmission for faster and smoother downshifts.

HIGH-FLOW EXHAUST SYSTEM WITH CLOSE-COUPLED CATALYZERS

To reduce weight and move the engine's two primary catalytic converters as close as possible to the combustion chambers, the TL and TL Type-S exhaust manifolds are cast right into the cylinder heads. A 900-cell per-square-inch (600-cell per-square-inch in Type-S) high efficiency converter mounts directly to the exhaust port of each cylinder head for extremely rapid converter light off after the engine starts. This mounting system has the added benefit of eliminating traditional exhaust header pipes for a significant weight savings.

To ensure optimum flow and reduce backpressure, a hydroformed 2-into-1 collector pipe carries spent gases down to a 350 cell per-square-inch secondary converter under the passenger cabin.

After the catalytic converter, the TL Type-S exhaust flows through two underfloor mufflers and dual rear silencers to reduce backpressure.

The TL Type-S features an exhaust system with 14 percent better flow than the TL, with larger pipes through much of its length. Tuned for an aggressive sound befitting
the high-performance image of the Type-S, the system also features finishers with large quad outlets (two on each side).

EMISSIONS CONTROL

This generation TL has met tight CARB LEV-2/ULEV emissions standards since its introduction in 2004. For 2007, the TL Type-S also meets this standard.

By integrating the exhaust manifolds into the cylinder head design, the primary catalysts can be mounted very close to the engine. This ensures quick light off after engine start up, key to meeting the low emissions standard. Additionally, a 32-bit RISC microprocessor in the powertrain control module (PCM) boosts computing power for precise fuel and spark delivery. The high efficiency multi-hole fuel injectors deliver fuel to each cylinder and direct fuel around the intake valve stem for improved atomization, which helps to further reduce emissions, particularly after starting.

NOISE, VIBRATION AND HARSHNESS (NVH) CONTROL

The TL and TL Type-S engines have 60-degree V-angles and compact, rigid and lightweight die-cast aluminum-alloy block assembly. Rigid forged crankshafts, die-cast accessory mounts, and stiff, cast aluminum-alloy oil pans also contribute to the overall smoothness of both engines. The induction system and the lightweight exhaust system of the TL and Type-S have been tuned to create a refined, sporty engine sound at large throttle openings and high rpm.

105,000-MILE TUNE-UP INTERVALS

With long-lasting components like iridium alloy-tipped spark plugs and a space-saving, self-tensioning serpentine accessory drive belt, the TL and TL Type-S are exceptionally low maintenance automobiles. They require no scheduled maintenance until 105,000 miles, other than periodic inspections and normal fluid and filter replacements. This first tune-up includes water pump inspection, valve adjustment, and replacement of the timing belt and spark plugs.

MAINTENANCE MINDER

The TL and TL Type-S have a Maintenance Minder system that constantly monitors the vehicle's unique operating condition to indicate to the driver when maintenance is required. Maintenance alerts are presented when the ignition is first turned on, not while driving (to prevent driver distraction). The system monitors engine operating conditions such as fluid temperatures and engine revolutions to determine the proper service intervals.

A Multi-Information Display (MID) is located below the speedometer in the instrument cluster. Redesigned with a higher resolution for 2007, it indicates the remaining percentage of engine oil life, and then shows when service is due with a "wrench" icon. A percentage-based countdown to the next service is displayed when the car is within 15 percent of the end of the service interval. An alphanumeric code is displayed to indicate the specific type of service that is required. If the service is missed, the MID indicates past-due mileage to express the urgency of the required service to the driver.

The system is designed to eliminate unnecessary maintenance procedures, environmental impact and expenses, while ensuring important service issues are addressed. In some cases, oil change intervals can extend to a maximum of 10,000 miles, which could spare the owner considerable money and time over the life of the car. The owner-resetable system monitors all normal service parts and systems, including oil, oil filter, tire rotation, air-cleaner, automatic transmission fluid, spark plugs, timing belt, coolant, brake pads and more.

6-SPEED MANUAL TRANSMISSION

While the TL is now only available with the new 5-speed automatic transmission, the TL Type-S is offered with an available close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission. This precise, short-throw unit is similar to the 6-speed offered last year and now features a different bell housing to mate properly with the new 3.5-liter V-6 engine. It's designed to take advantage of the high power and torque of the new Type-S engine and give enthusiast drivers maximum control and responsiveness.

This compact transmission is substantially lighter than the automatic transmission. It features a high-pressure die-cast aluminum-alloy transmission housing to save weight. To further reduce weight and size, special narrow, high-strength steel gears are used, and the shafts are hollow. Close ratio spacing helps provide quicker acceleration by keeping engine revs up close to the horsepower peak. Brass multi-cone synchronizers are used in first through fourth gears with a single-cone synchronizer for reverse to reduce shift load and help ensure smooth, precise shifting. A large gear-tooth contact area helps to reduce gear noise. A reverse lockout feature prevents the transmission from accidentally being shifted into reverse while the car is moving forward.

CLUTCH AND DUAL-MASS FLYWHEEL

The TL's manual transmission is equipped with a compact clutch unit that is self-adjusting for consistent pedal height, feel and effort throughout its service life. This innovative clutch system automatically takes up the slack between the pressure plate and clutch disc and lowers release loads while maintaining consistent pressure for the diaphragm spring. For 2007, the clutch mechanism incorporates a clutch feel compensation spring, which results in a more linear engagement feel.

To reduce drivetrain shock and limit the torque load on transmission components, the clutch includes a one-way delay valve located in the slave cylinder that restricts return fluid flow during rapid clutch engagement. This makes the clutch engagement more gradual during rapid release.

A dual-mass flywheel helps to reduce noise, cut down the transfer of engine vibration into the cabin and provide increased comfort during shifting. This unit is divided into two flywheels with a torsion spring and viscous damper sandwiched between the two. This design enhances the durability of the synchronizers, reduces vibration and gear rattle and reduces the shift load.

LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL

When equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, the TL Type-S features a standard limited-slip differential. This helical-gear-type differential enhances traction during acceleration and reduces understeer in high cornering load situations.

A set of helical gears mounted within the ring gear carrier responds to wheel spin at either front wheel by dividing the torque more equally between the two front wheels for the best possible traction. This system improves traction when cornering and when negotiating slippery surfaces or surfaces where traction is uneven from side to side.

5-SPEED SEQUENTIAL SPORTSHIFT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

Both the TL and TL Type-S receive an all-new 5-speed automatic transmission for 2007. With a 4-shaft design with higher torque capacity, it is more robust than its predecessor, but also more compact. It also features slightly revised ratios, new shift control logic for each model and Grade Logic Control and, on the Type-S, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Mechanically related to the transmission that made its debut in the 2005 RL, the 2007 TL unit has modifications to adapt it to the front-wheel drive TL platform.

Designed for low maintenance and a high level of durability, the TL transmission requires no scheduled service until 120,000 miles. To provide strong off-the-line acceleration coupled with a relaxed, fuel-efficient cruising rpm, the unit has one of the widest gear ratio spreads of any 5-speed automatic transmission in its class.

Automatic Mode

The Sequential SportShift transmission can be operated in conventional fully automatic mode via a front console-mounted gated shifter. When in automatic mode, the transmission incorporates an advanced Grade Logic Control system and Shift Hold Control, both of which work to reduce gear "hunting" and unnecessary shifting.

Shift Hold Control keeps the transmission in its current (lower) ratio when the throttle is quickly released and the brakes are applied (as might be the case when decelerating to enter a corner). Shift Hold Control leaves the chassis undisturbed by excess shifting, ensuring that abundant power is immediately available without a downshift.

Grade Logic Control alters the 5-speed automatic's shift schedule when traveling uphill or downhill, reducing shift frequency, and improving speed control. Throttle position, vehicle speed and acceleration/deceleration are continuously measured, then compared with a map stored in the transmission computer. The Grade Logic Control system then determines when the car is on a hill. If this is the case, the shift schedule is adjusted to automatically hold the transmission in a lower gear for better climbing power or increased downhill engine braking.

Manual Mode

The Sequential SportShift transmission can be shifted into manual mode by moving the center console-mounted selector lever laterally to a special gate to the left of the "Drive" position. The TL can then be shifted manually by pushing or pulling the shift lever. TL Type-S owners can also choose to use F1® style paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel, which reduces the need to remove their hands from the wheel during spirited driving. A digital display within the tachometer indicates which gear the transmission is in.

Type-S models use special shift algorithms to deliver quicker, firmer shifts, heightening control and driver involvement. Additionally, thanks to the robust construction of the new automatic transmission, downshifts occur over a much wider range than before. TL and TL Type-S drivers can now downshift into first gear. Type-S drivers enjoy special shift programming for the third to second and second to first downshifts that increases speed by about 7 mph for even greater control.

To help protect the engine and drivetrain from damage, an array of preventive features are active when the transmission is in manual mode. In first, second, third and fourth gears, the logic changes, and the transmission ECU cuts off fuel flow to the engine if there is a possibility of over revving.

In the rare situation where the fuel cutoff alone is unable to prevent engine over revving (as could happen on a steep downhill) the transmission will upshift itself to prevent engine damage. And finally, when downshifting, the transmission won't execute a driver-commanded downshift that would send the engine beyond redline in the lower gear. The Sequential SportShift transmission will automatically downshift to first gear as the vehicle comes to a stop, to prevent lugging away from a stop in a high gear.

5-POSITION SHIFT GATE

The TL benefits from a 5-position shift gate that simplifies the operation of the transmission. It features a linkage and a speed-controlled reverse lockout solenoid valve to prevent transmission damage. When operated in automatic mode, the transmission lets the driver choose between D (Drive) and L (Low). When moved to the Low position, the transmission downshifts to the lowest possible ratio for the current road speed to provide maximum engine braking. If the vehicle continues to slow, the transmission progressively downshifts to maintain engine braking effect. When it has shifted all the way down to first gear, the transmission won't upshift further unless the driver moves the selector back to the D (Drive) position where normal transmission operation resumes.

ACTIVE LOCKUP TORQUE CONVERTER

The 5-speed Sequential SportShift automatic includes a new generation active lockup torque converter that improves fuel economy while maintaining a high level of drivability. A precise linear solenoid expands the speed and throttle setting range in which lockup can be engaged in the top four gears. This results in a reduction in transmission slippage for an improvement in fuel economy. The torque converter is now calibrated to offer more progressive acceleration than in the past, coupled with better acceleration at large throttle openings. The efficient Sequential SportShift automatic transmission couples with tall overall gearing to deliver 28 mpg on the highway in both the TL and Type-S during internal testing using the EPA method, while city mileage is 20 for TL and 19 for the Type-S.

COOPERATION BETWEEN 5AT AND DRIVE-BY-WIRE

With the Drive-by-Wire Throttle System™, the function of the engine and transmission can be closely choreographed for faster, smoother shifting. Upshifts from first to second gear, and from second to third gear, are more than one-tenth of a second quicker. In manual mode, driver-commanded downshifts are also more than one-tenth of a second quicker. Meanwhile, the peak g-or "shift shock"-has been reduced significantly during downshifts.

Manual downshifts are smoothed in the TL Type-S by shift programming that matches engine revs to gear selection and vehicle speed. When the driver toggles the gearshift lever or paddle shifter for a lower gear, the powertrain control module (PCM) senses the shift and opens the throttle slightly, injecting extra air and fuel into the Type-S engine. This revs the engine to the speed the transmission will reach in the lower gear, smoothing the gear change while simultaneously speeding up the downshift. The driver feels only a quick downshift, with virtually no driveline shock or hesitation.

2007 Acura TL - Body

OVERVIEW

For 2007, the Acura TL's exterior has been updated to enhance its emotional and athletic impact. With the introduction of the Type-S, visual cues were incorporated to distinguish it from other TLs. All the updates were done while maintaining the high build quality, durability and resale value that Acura buyers expect.

DESIGN CONCEPT

The TL was designed to embody aggressiveness and power, agility and endurance. Designers began with the stance of the vehicle-how it looks and sits on its suspension. They worked towards a look of poise, with a promise of agility and power. The contrast of muscular tension and angular lines flows through the sheet metal, with its long wheelbase, short front and rear overhangs and wide track setting the tone.

The 2004 TL design team were, in part, influenced by "Bauhaus" styling themes. Founded in 1919, Bauhaus was the first and most famous German design house. Bauhaus set a template for European design with the now-famous maxim, "Form follows function." That classic design logic meshes well with already established Acura design philosophies.

With the updates for 2007, the style could more accurately be called "Bauhaus with attitude." Careful attention was paid to give the Type-S its own distinctive and even more aggressive look. Black chrome trim used around the car is an excellent example of the difference between the TL and the Type-S.

RIGIDITY

Although adding stiffness to a vehicle's unit body improves road holding and makes the driver feel more connected to the car, it also can add weight. In the 2007 TL, ample use of high-tensile steel accounts for a strong unit body structure that is also light. A front shock tower brace, a rigid front bulkhead, a roof stiffener that extends to the C-pillar, and a rear speaker shelf box section also contribute to stiffness.

HIGH-TENSILE STEEL

High-tensile steel was used for 48 percent of the body. Even though the forming process is similar to that used for standard steel, the molecular composition of high-tensile steel allows it to be stronger after forming. Parts can therefore be made thinner and lighter while maintaining strength.

AERODYNAMICS

Design and engineering objectives for the TL required aerodynamic creativity. The challenge was to allow stylists to craft the TL front end as powerfully and emotionally as they wanted, without impeding the airflow essential for engine operation. Moreover crash safety, high-speed stability, reduced wind noise and high fuel economy were essential.

Achieving the desired exterior styling required that most of the cooling air come from under the front of the car. Several different polypropylene panels enhance underbody aerodynamic performance. These lightweight and durable panels include a curved valance below the front fascia. Air attaches to its smooth radius at highway speeds and is directed into the radiator. The center section of the valance bends out of the way if the TL encounters a curb or other obstruction. For 2007, improved brake cooling strakes were introduced into the front valance as well.

Other aerodynamic elements include a sleek A-pillar shape, front and rear deflectors, an engine undercover and a rear floor cover. These improvements benefit fuel economy, reduce wind noise and improve high-speed stability. Internal testing reveals that the 2007 TL surpasses the Infiniti G35, Lexus IS 350 and Audi S4 in coefficient of drag.

Additionally, the TL Type-S trunk lid spoiler helps produce lift to promote enhanced high speed stability.

WHEEL ARCH GAPS

Minimizing the visual gap between the edges of the tires and the wheel arches was an important design goal. To retain a wide wheel track with these narrow gaps, the TL has a special fender flange design that allows the tires to sweep up and inside without making contact during suspension movement.

MASS REDUCTION

Reducing the TL curb weight was a matter of high priority for Acura. Despite a comprehensive array of technology and the use of insulating materials to promote an even quieter and more luxurious cabin, strict control over component weight has kept the TL to 3623 pounds. The TL Type-S with the 5-speed Sequential SportShift automatic weighs 3674 pounds, with the 6-speed model coming in at only 3559 pounds.

POWER GLASS MOONROOF

The TL's 30.7-inch moonroof lends a tremendous open feeling to the car, and features the convenience of one-touch opening and closing and a standard anti-pinch safety feature.

The overhang of the moonroof panel edge into the opening is a scant 1.6 inches when it is fully opened. The moonroof itself is virtually flush, reducing the chance of wind noise. There is also a special flush-type seal that promotes quietness.

HID (HIGH-INTENSITY DISCHARGE) HEADLIGHTS

The TL headlights feature HID high and low beams, as well as daytime running lights (DRLs). These HID high/low beams are made possible by a shutter device that mechanically controls the light output of the HID unit. When the driver selects high beam, an electric solenoid in the headlight moves a shutter forward, opening up a greater reflector area inside the headlight. When the lights are operated on low beam, this shutter repositions to act as a cut-off to keep the lighted area closer to the vehicle. The TL headlights dramatically increase the illuminated area versus non-HID beams, considerably more effective at long range. For 2007, the fog lamps have been moved from the headlight assembly to integrated into the lower bumper.

LED LIGHTING

Extensive use of light emitting diodes (LEDs) provides a high-tech image for side and rear lighting. LEDs are used for the front side marker lights, Center High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL), taillights, and rear side marker lights.

These LED arrays provide uniform lighting and a unique, modern look. They also have a quicker turn-on time and a projected service life four times longer than normal automotive bulbs. They are also brighter, use less energy and produce less heat than incandescent bulbs.

For 2007, the rear taillights have been redesigned with clear outer covers and red inner lenses. TL models have the two elements separated with a red chrome extension, while the Type-S features a black chrome bar between the two.

5 MPH BUMPERS

The Acura TL uses a highly efficient Xenoy thermoplastic energy absorber with a high-strength steel reinforcement beam that absorbs 80 percent of low-speed crash energy. This allowed designers to reduce the overhang of the bumper, while also reducing the weight and repair costs. Both the front and rear bumpers meet the federal government's 2.5 mph regulation, even when tested at 5 mph.

NOISE, VIBRATION & HARSHNESS (NVH) CONTROL

An assortment of NVH measures includes advanced aerodynamic design, the first U.S.-market use of automotive acoustic windshield glass with shade band, insulating panels under the hood and inside the trunk and the fenders.

Key NVH areas include:

Acoustically tuned glass windshield

Since its 2004 introduction, the TL's windshield has been made of 4.7 mm thick acoustic glass, which consists of two layers of safety glass, separated by a thin acoustic resin center. Representing the first time that acoustic glass with a shade band had been applied to a luxury vehicle in North America, the windshield reduces road noise on smooth asphalt significantly in higher frequency ranges. To reduce noise intrusion through the side glass, the front and rear movable door glass is 5 mm thick.

Thinsulate

Patented by 3M, Thinsulate™ insulation was developed for thermal applications but it is also ideal for noise reduction. It is crushable and can be used in tight-clearance areas. In the TL it is used behind the door liners, rear seat side garnishes, center console, rear seatback and front and rear pillar garnishes. It is also used under the instrument panel and parcel shelf and inside the front and rear fenders.

Trunk

Engineers treated the trunk as an acoustic package, containing the speaker array and trunk hinges and springs in a rigid box structure. This improves audio bass performance, reduces interior noise levels, enhances the appearance of the trunk interior, and eliminates the chance that belongings will be damaged by a speaker or hinge.

NVH reduction items

  • Re-designed aluminum-alloy front subframe
  • Re-designed outside mirrors with full seals
  • 5 mm side glass
  • Hood insulator
  • Improved door-handle sealing
  • Flush-mount moonroof

Aluminum-alloy front subframe

Besides its low mass, the TL aluminum-alloy front subframe reduces "starting boom" (resonance noise). For 2007, it has been re-designed with new transmission mounts and bushings for a more comfortable ride.

Melt Sheet

The careful application of a high-density melt sheet makes a huge reduction in high-frequency sound. Testing results show it reduces the vibration of the TL floor panels from approximately 500Hz and above, decreasing noise inside the vehicle.

Active Noise Cancellation™

To further reduce cabin noise, the '07 TL Type-S uses Active Noise Cancellation. The system uses a pair of cabin-mounted microphones and the car's audio system to cancel out low-frequency noise, greatly reducing cabin "boom." More information about Active Noise Cancellation is available in the Interior section.

POWER WINDOWS

The TL's driver and front passenger windows feature an auto-open and auto-close feature. It also incorporates an anti-pinch safety feature. The glass is 5 mm thick to reduce cabin noise.

EXTERIOR (SIDEVIEW) MIRRORS

A mirror housing needs to be small and aerodynamic to reduce turbulence-without compromising mirror area. To reduce the housing size, engineers devised a way to hold the mirror element from behind instead of at the sides, and carefully controlled the gap between the mirror element and housing to further reduce turbulence. Blue-tinted mirrors also reduce eyestrain in bright conditions. For 2007, the housing has been redesigned to incorporate turn signals.

Engineers also measured the airflow through the channel between the A-pillar and the mirror. By designing this channel in an expanding V-shape, the air actually decelerates (rather than accelerates) as it moves across the glass. This helps keep the air from tumbling across the side glass, reducing high- and mid-frequency noise.

The mirrors have been positioned forward, away from the window glass, to further reduce wind noise, while increasing the driver's side view. A reverse tilt function automatically tilts either the left or right mirror down when the TL transmission is shifted into reverse. This is a driver-selectable function via the mirror adjuster control that may be turned on or off if desired.

DOORS & LATCHES

To resist parking lot dings and dents, the TL door skins are made from special 340H high-tensile steel. This bake-hardened steel has much greater resistance to bending and a higher work-hardening threshold than conventional steel, making the door skins much more resistant to dents and dings. The door skins are 10 to 15 percent stronger with 50 percent better permanent deform resistance than conventional steel.

Door fit is a matter of extraordinary precision on the TL. The gap is just 3.5 mm at the leading edge of the front doors, 4 mm between the doors, and 3.5 mm at the trailing edge of the rear doors.

Acura precisely refined the door closing sound on the TL. A door sash structure, manufactured with a laser-welded blank, increases the rigidity of the door sashes and reduces objectionable high frequency noise as the doors are closed. A door lock structure absorbs sounds caused by the latch, eliminating objectionable noise.

BODY TRIM

The aggressive and sporty styling is subtly enhanced on the TL, and aggressively enhanced on the Type-S. Satin chrome trim graces the new, larger grille on the TL, while black chrome trim is found on the Type-S. The B-pillar and roof seam trim are high gloss black, while redesigned aluminum step garnishes with "TL" or "Type-S" laser-etched on them provide a finished appearance.

EXHAUST FINISHERS

The TLs exhaust has bright trapezoidal finisher tips integrated into the rear styling. The tips are inset far enough to allow adequate bumper stroke in the event of a low-speed collision, but are positioned far enough back to allow exhaust gases to pass beyond the bumper. Special multi-axis rubber mounts control the exhaust tip placement, allowing a gap of only 0.8 inch between the finisher and fascia. A high heat-resistance polypropylene garnish is clipped to the bumper to protect it from heat.

On the Type-S, the trapezoidal finishers are replaced with two round chrome finishers on each side, emphasizing the sporty role the Type-S plays.

EXTERIOR PAINT

The 2007 TL is available in seven pearl and two metallic exterior colors. Four new colors debut for 2007, with one (Kinetic Blue Pearl) exclusive to the Type-S. The painting process begins when the steel body receives a phosphate bath to completely clean it of oils and film after welding is complete. This is followed by an electrodeposition (ED) primer bath, where the unit body is electrically charged to attract the primer. After baking, the color coat is applied, followed by a protective clear coat.

2007 Acura TL - Chassis

OVERVIEW

The TL's front-wheel drive chassis provides significant benefits in a 5-passenger sedan. The overall package is lighter than if it were rear drive, there is more passenger room and the drivetrain is more compact. There are also important benefits in fuel efficiency.

CHASSIS CONCEPT

With the introduction of the TL Type-S, the TL chassis now finds itself with multiple challengers. Also, whereas previously the TL's target was the BMW 530i Sport, a magazine comparison favorite, the 2007 TL lineup gives buyers the choice between two distinct models.

The TL is targeted toward buyers interested in a high-tech luxury sedan with excellent handling and chassis dynamics, but who also value a comfortable ride more than razor's-edge handling. The Type-S is aimed at buyers who want an increase in handling, braking and dynamic capability, but without making major sacrifices in ride comfort or interior noise.

Both share a rigid platform with a performance-tuned suspension and large tires. The large tire contact patches enhance braking and handling with all-season tires. The high-performance "summer" tires available on the Type-S boost acceleration, handling and braking capability even higher on both dry and wet surfaces.

As a result both the TL and Type-S have excellent dynamic properties. Both feel crisp and taut, corner flat and offer a high level of grip-even with four passengers aboard. With two separate TL models for 2007, chassis engineers were able to uniquely tune the suspensions for the different models' roles.

Noteworthy TL chassis enhancements include:

  • Suspension tuning to enhance ride comfort while maintaining handling performance
  • Front spring rates reduced by 7 percent from 2006 TL
  • Shock absorbers and compliance bushing retuned for ride comfort
  • Thicker hollow front anti-roll bar and new larger diameter hollow rear anti-roll bar
  • New rear subframe bushings for reduced NVH
  • Stiffer 17 x 8-inch aluminum-alloy wheels that result in less road noise
  • Underbody brake strake to reduce brake fade

Features exclusive to the TL Type-S include:

  • Increased damping rates for superior handling
  • Rear spring rate increased
  • A solid front anti-roll bar and thicker rear anti-roll bar
  • Damper mount stiffness increased 400 percent for enhanced response and feel
  • Exclusive master cylinder for enhanced brake feel
  • Brembo 4-piston front brake calipers
  • Available 235/45R17 Bridgestone Potenza RE 030 high-performance "summer" tires on automatic and manual transmission models

HYDROFORMED ALUMINUM-ALLOY SUBFRAME

The TL uses an all aluminum-alloy front subframe that carries the engine, transmission and lower suspension links.

The U-shaped subframe cradle is hydroformed. In this process, a single aluminum-alloy tube is inserted into an immensely strong die, which is locked closed before the tube is pressurized with water. The resulting component is lighter and stronger than a multi-piece component would be. The hydroformed cradle is then attached to aluminum-alloy corner brackets to form the complete subframe.

For 2007, the subframe has been redesigned to accommodate the new 5-speed automatic transmission and, in the Type-S, the new 3.5-liter V-6 engine. The lower transmission mount has been changed from two pieces to one piece, and the upper transmission mount has been redesigned as well. In addition, the bushings between the rear subframe and the chassis on the TL have been revised.

ENGINE MOUNTS

The TL and TL Type-S are equipped with a pair of special fluid-filled Electronic Control Mounts. Connected to the hydroformed aluminum-alloy subframe, they reduce vibration when the engine is idling.

The TL engine also has a side mount that helps control lateral movement. And on the Type-S with 6-speed manual transmission, a special damper further reduces engine-rocking motion when the driver lets the clutch out or shifts.

FRONT SUSPENSION

The TL front suspension is a double-wishbone system with a rigid stamped steel upper arm and a steel lower arm. The system is functionally related to the systems used on Formula One and Indy Cars, and permits the best combination of road holding, ride quality and packaging for the TL. The system uses coil-over shock absorbers that, unlike strut suspensions, are not stressed suspension members. This reduces suspension friction and improves responsiveness to bumps. Suspension camber gain is maximized through the use of a short upper arm, while steering feel is enhanced through a high placement of the lower arm.

The upper suspension arm is extremely rigid, which makes it less likely to transmit vibrations from road surface irregularities into the cabin as road noise. A special compliance bushing on the lower arm better absorbs bumps and improves ride quality. A steel bar connects the shock towers. Hollow, high-strength and lightweight, it enhances chassis solidity, steering precision and feel.

While the major geometry is shared between the TL and TL Type-S, the tuning of these components results in cars with significantly different steering and ride feel.

The TL's suspension has been retuned with an emphasis on ride comfort while maintaining excellent handling. Thus, the hollow front anti-roll bar has increased in size from 25.4 mm to 27.2 mm. Also, the front spring rate has been reduced by 7 percent compared to the 2006 model. The front compliance bushing and dampers have been retuned for improved ride comfort, resulting in improved ride comfort without increased roll and only a slight decrease in instrumented handling tests.

The Type-S suspension has been retuned for significant performance gains. The hollow front anti-roll bar is replaced with a 27 mm solid bar. Although a smaller diameter than the previous TL, the bar is significantly stiffer than the hollow 27.2 mm bar it replaces. Additionally, the front damping rate has increased significantly. The dampers on the Type-S have been tuned specifically for this vehicle's goal of refined handling. The result is increased road holding and enhanced stability with a reduced roll angle, with a minimal loss in ride comfort. Also, the damper mounts are 400 percent stiffer, improving steering response and handling, but without compromising road noise isolation.

REAR SUSPENSION

The TL rear suspension is a 5-link independent system with struts and coil springs. It mounts to a steel subframe to improve road isolation and provide a quiet interior. The rear suspension geometry adds "toe-in" when the suspension is compressed, improving handling stability over bumps and during hard cornering and braking.

A stabilizer bar further improves handling precision by limiting body roll, while a special "pillow joint" for the lateral links improves camber rigidity. Rubber shims on the leading and trailing arm bushings improve ride comfort.

As on the front suspension, the rear suspension has been specially retuned on both the TL and TL Type-S. The TL has unique shock valving for improved ride comfort. The rear anti-roll bar has been changed from a solid 17 mm bar on the 2006 model to a hollow 18.3 mm bar. This reduces weight without sacrificing roll stiffness.

Type-S suspension settings are tuned for performance. Although the automatic and manual transmission Type-S models have the same suspension settings, the rear spring rate has been increased 33 percent on vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, 14 percent on vehicles mated with automatic transmissions. The solid rear anti-roll bar has increased in size from 17 mm on the 2006 model to 20 mm for 2007 on cars with an automatic transmission. This results in much greater roll stiffness in the rear, allowing for better balance and control.

STEERING

The TL uses torque-sensing, variable power-assisted rack and pinion steering. The engine-driven variable-output pump provides the kind of steering feel that driving enthusiasts like: modest steering effort at low speeds and precise feel at higher speeds.

For 2007, the TL Type-S receives revised power steering pumps and steering gearboxes to improve steering effort build and feeling while maintaining a confident and stable feel. To this end, the power steering pump has been retuned for decreased flow at 3250 rpm for increased effort build up. Additionally, the steering gearbox tuning increased effort by 15 percent at high speeds for better on-center feel. The rack has also been retuned for better damping feel. To keep up with the demands of spirited driving, the TL Type-S also features a new aluminum power steering fluid cooler.

Hydraulic steering dampers built into the system further improve stability during cornering and at high speeds. A one-way kickback valve decreases kickback to the steering wheel that can be caused by road irregularities. The hydraulic valve closes when it senses road irregularities, impeding disturbances to the steering wheel.

Increasing the stiffness of the steering gearbox mounting and the rear sub frame also maximizes steering linearity.

BRAKES

Both the TL and TL Type-S feature 4-wheel disc brakes with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist, an anti-lock braking system (ABS) and 4-channel Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with Traction Control System (TCS) as standard equipment.

On the TL, the front brakes are ventilated 300 mm cast-iron discs with single-piston calipers. For 2007, fade resistance has been improved with a larger brake strake in the front fascia, which directs more air to the brakes. This reduces brake temperature in high-demand braking, and helps improve the TL's brake fade resistance. The rear brakes are 282 mm solid discs, gripped by single piston calipers.

Both manual and automatic transmission TL Type-S models receive 310 mm Brembo brake rotors and aluminum-alloy front brake calipers that previously were only available on manual transmision-equipped cars. The calipers have four pistons each and more aggressive pad material to offer improved brake feel and reduced fade in hard, repeated brake applications. They are also 30 percent lighter than the standard calipers, reducing unsprung weight by 4.3 pounds per wheel, which in turn improves suspension response for better ride and handling. The calipers feature an attractive black painted finish with the Acura name. Rear brakes are the same 282 mm solid discs as the TL, but the calipers are given a black finish to match the front brake calipers.

All models use a single 10-inch vacuum booster is used to reduce weight, increase stiffness and deliver more direct braking feel. Inside, the parking brake handle has been restyled with a new leather cover.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution

The TL features Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), which continuously and automatically adjusts the pressure distribution between the front and rear brakes depending on how the vehicle is dynamically loaded.

Brake Assist

Brake Assist comes standard on the TL. Its purpose is to help the driver apply full braking pressure in a "panic stop" situation. To do so, a microprocessor continually analyzes and "learns" the driver's normal braking habits.

In an emergency braking situation when the brakes are suddenly applied and partially released by the driver to avoid wheel lockup, brake assist helps the driver apply full braking force via the anti-lock actuator. A pressure sensor detects an increase in brake fluid pressure and activates the anti-lock braking system. Braking pressure is maintained momentarily after the driver's initial braking action unless the driver completely releases the brake pedal.

Anti-lock Braking System

Standard on the TL is a three-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), which works in conjunction with the Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) system. Utilizing speed sensors located at each wheel, the system modulates braking power to the front wheels independently and to the rear wheels in tandem-enhancing driver control during maximum-effort stops. For 2007, a new ABS modulator improves response time and reduces noise when operating.

VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST™ (VSA®)

The TL is equipped with 4-channel Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) that helps the driver retain control of the car in the event the vehicle reaches its dynamic traction limits. For example, this may occur through aggressive cornering, encountering ice or dirt on the road, or entering a decreasing-radius corner too fast.

In the event of understeer, the system can apply the inside front and rear brakes to increase yaw, slowing the vehicle and enabling it to complete the turn. Engine torque may also be reduced by coordination of the Drive-by-Wire Throttle System™ and powertrain control module.

The 4-channel system controls all four brakes independently. In the event of oversteer (where the rear tires lose grip), the system can apply the outside front and rear brakes to decrease yaw, slowing the vehicle and enabling it to stay on its intended path.

An indicator light on the instrument panel alerts the driver whenever the VSA system is actively enhancing the vehicle's stability.

The traction control component of VSA uses sensors that monitor each of the wheels and a computer-controlled modulation of engine power and front brakes to help prevent wheel spin when starting out or accelerating. If the sensors detect wheel spin, traction control reduces engine power and applies brake force to the affected wheels. This helps the TL maintain traction during acceleration and helps the driver retain steering control, even when accelerating on slippery surfaces.

A cockpit switch is provided to disable the vehicle stability and traction control aspects of the system while leaving the ABS system fully functional.

WHEELS

The Acura TL has lightweight 17 x 8-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with distinctive designs for the TL and TL Type-S. The TL receives a split-five spoke wheel finished in Blade Sliver, while the Type-S wheels are a 10-spoke design finished in Dark Euro Silver. Both wheels are lightweight designs, which contribute to quicker suspension movement and better ride quality by contributing to lowering unsprung weight. Optional 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels are available as accessory in three different finishes.

TIRES

Bridgestone 17-inch all-season high-performance tires were specifically developed for the TL. The standard tire is P235/45R17 M+S (all-season), and is available on TLs without the navigation system. TLs with navigation receive Michelin all-season high-performance tires. All Type-S models are equipped with Michelin tires, and a high-performance 235/45R17 Bridgestone Potenza RE-030 "summer" tire is available for the Type-S as well. The 2007 TL is also equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system.

The 17-inch tires significantly contribute to the TL design objectives including its aggressive, athletic appearance. They also measurably improve handling and braking.

The high-performance tires available on the Type-S further enhance dry handling, wet handling and braking, at the cost of performance in snow and accelerated wear. In warm weather, these tires consistently outperform all-season tires in slalom speed, maximum cornering g force, and braking distance.

The TL Type-S has a T145/70R17 temporary spare tire. A T135/80R16 temporary spare is used on the TL. The advantages of a temporary spare include maximum trunk space as well as reduced vehicle weight for better handling and fuel economy.

AVAILABLE TL Sport Suspension

Specifically made for TL models, an available dealer-installed sport suspension kit can also be purchased, which includes all four shock absorbers and springs, larger wheels and tires plus aero components. Known as the A-SPEC kit, it provides firmer damping and spring rates for an even sportier handling and offers a lower ride height, further distinguishing the TL.

The A-SPEC kit includes:

  • Pre-assembled performance springs and shocks that lower the vehicleapproximately 1.2 in. (30 mm)

Styling

The TL interior has a dynamic and distinctive look, yet upholds the longstanding Acura tradition of highly functional driving environments. Given the sharp handling agility and power built into the TL, its interior echoes a clear sporting message. Fine details and rich surface finishes make it clear that the TL has not strayed from its luxury roots. Sweeping aluminum-alloy accents with a new pattern for 2007 wrap around the doors, flow onto the instrument panel and dive down the center console. Wood patterned accents warm the interior in the TL, while Type-S models have carbon fiber-look accents and contrast stitching on the door panels, seats and steering wheel, which creates an edgy look.

At night, the TL interior is transformed by new ambient lighting. The TL is bathed in a subtle blue light that coordinates with the instrumentation lighting, switchgear, and accent lighting, including the new footwell lighting. On the Type-S, red lighting replaces the blue, reinforcing its role as the enthusiast model.

Driver-Oriented Cockpit

The TL interior puts all important systems and controls within easy reach of the driver. The systems used most frequently-audio, cruise control, Acura HandsFreeLink™ and Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™-have satellite controls positioned on the new 3-spoke steering wheel, leather-wrapped on Type-S. The new instrumentation is backlit and easy to read, and the displays have an uncluttered look and intuitive operation. The Multi-Info Display has been redesigned with higher resolution for better readability. Helpful features make driving easier, like power rearview mirrors that can be set to automatically tilt-down when reverse is engaged to make parking simpler.

With a driver's 8-way power seat and a tilt/telescoping steering column, it's easy to get comfortable in the TL. The one-touch moonroof switch is located in the overhead console. The Sequential SportShift selector features an intuitive interface for ease of use. The short-throw, close ratio 6-speed manual gearbox falls naturally to hand, and the shift knob and console-mounted parking brake lever are covered in a new textured leather. There is also a bottom-hinged throttle pedal with a more linear feel and natural motion. The Type-S features sporty-looking stainless steel pedals and a new carbon fiber-look automatic transmission shift knob in addition to the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.

Seating

Proper seat support helps foster a sense of connection with the car, and provides a useful avenue for dynamic chassis feedback to the driver. The TL's seat is revised with slightly lower shoulder wings for improved comfort. Type-S models get seats with additional side bolstering and the Type-S logo embossed in the leather headrest. Both TL models feature softer leather that doesn't sacrifice durability.

In both the TL and TL Type-S, the seats have new high-damping seat foam. The new foam improves ride comfort by isolating the driver from road imperfections. It also features a uniform cellular structure that is evenly cross linked, so that the load is distributed evenly to reduce driver fatigue.

Given the sporting/luxury TL mission, the 8-way power adjustable seat is engineered for long-haul comfort in addition to sporting support. All driver's seat power adjustments are included in Keyless Memory Link, a system that stores a pair of user profiles linked to the two key fobs that come with the TL.

For proper support of people of varying sizes and shapes, the TL driver's seat has a two-way power adjustable lumbar support mechanism. Unlike lumbar supports that sometimes have a sharp-edged feel, the TL system has a smooth shape that matches the spinal curvature to provide solid support for the torso and pelvis.

The front passenger seat is four-way power adjustable and has a fixed lumbar support. With their carefully engineered shape-complete with side bolstering-the outboard rear seats blend luxury with sporting support. Four-way front headrests are adjustable for height and tilt; the rear outboard headrests adjust vertically.

LED Instrumentation/Interior Lighting

One of the most dramatic changes to the interior is the new instrumentation. Still classic analog, the new instruments feature gauge faces with a high-tech spun metal look. The laser-etched LED backlit numerals appear to be cut out of the metal gauge face, and are clearly visible in daytime or at night. The progressive self-illuminating gauge package gives the car a "welcoming" feel. When the door is first opened, the instrument lighting comes to life, then brightens progressively to 100 percent when the key is put in the ignition. The illuminated instrument needles and enunciator lights come alive when the ignition is turned on, indicating that the car is ready to go. At the end of the drive, the instrument lighting dims progressively.

TL receives blue interior lighting, while the Type-S is illuminated in red. All interior switches are illuminated to make them easy to find, including those on the steering wheel and all four doors. LEDs in the overhead console cast a subtle ambient glow on the center console area and like all the meter lights, are controlled by a dimmer mounted on the left side of the instrument panel. New footwell lighting is also coordinated to the model's color. Map/reading lights at all positions (not just in front) are bright and focused, to provide better illumination with less driver distraction. A master light switch is positioned in the overhead console within easy reach. The TL interior lights feature "theater dimming," which can be set by the driver to any of three rates via the new high-resolution Multi-Information Display (MID).

Cargo Carrying Versatility

Careful attention to the trunk shape and layout allows it to carry two extra large and two medium hard suitcases, or clubs and duffel bags for four golfers. For longer items, a lockable rear-seat trunk pass-through can accommodate up to four sets of skis and poles.

Attention to detail accents the finish and functionality of the TL trunk. Designed as a total acoustic package, it is completely lined throughout with all wiring concealed, and the rear speakers and navigation unit are fully protected. Enclosed hinge mechanisms minimize the potential for damage to luggage and a standard cargo net with a total of ten possible anchor points helps to secure objects. The spare tire is located under a tri-folding cover in the trunk floor and has a foam insert that keeps the jack and tools from rattling. The trunk can be opened via a release mounted low and on the driver's left side of the instrument panel, remotely with the key fob, or with a manual release accessible through the lockable trunk pass through. There is also an anti-trap release inside near the latch. For security, the trunk main switch is located in the glove box, which can be locked to prevent access by valets. A valet key is provided that will allow a parking attendant to operate the ignition, but will not open the glove box, trunk, or rear seat pass-through.

Comfort And Convenience Items

Comfort and convenience items are integrated throughout the handsome interior of the TL. There are cup holders in the front console and rear seat armrest that each accommodate two large drinks. There's a generously sized glove box, and the front doors have swing out rigid map pockets with removable sunglasses holders. Two covered storage areas are in the console immediately in front of the shifter; one holds four CD jewel cases, while the other features a 12-volt accessory socket. Both bins feature rubber mats to prevent items from slipping. There's room for another 10 CDs or six DVD-A cases inside the main center console beneath the armrest. This two-tier design has a leather-covered sliding armrest and a flocked upper tray for cell phone storage. A removable coin holder is built in, as is a 12-volt accessory outlet and AUX jack for an MP3 player or other device. Rigid seat-back map pockets have a clean, elegant look. Overhead, you'll find a roof console that incorporates a universal garage door opener which now incorporates HomeLink IV® logic.

High Quality Interior Finish

Substantial advances in fit and finish are evident in the TL interior. Upscale details include soft stitched passenger grab handles and redesigned concealed upper front seat belt anchors, soft cloth headliner and roof pillar covers. Key interior accent panels are made of aluminum alloy with a new pattern for 2007. Flush fits between the roof pillar linings and the headliner, flush interior door handle recesses and reduced panel gaps throughout the interior gives the TL interior a sleek and tailored appearance with the use of modern satin chrome throughout.

To ensure uniform fit and perfect seams, the leather-trimmed seating is sewn on automated machines. For 2007, a new tanning process is used for the leather surfaces that result in a softer feel.

For an integrated appearance, the TL uses a soft-touch instrument panel covering that completely conceals the passenger-side SRS airbag. Almost everywhere, soft materials and satin finishes are used in places the driver or a passenger are likely to touch, including soft-touch interior door grab handles, padded door armrests, leather center console, leather fold-down rear armrest, and the leather wrapped steering wheel.

Dual-Zone, Dual-Mode Acura Automatic Climate Control System

To help keep the interior comfortable regardless of the weather outside, the TL has a dual-zone, dual-mode Acura Automatic Climate Control System. This system lets the driver and front passenger set the temperature and air flow to their individual liking. A pair of adjustable vents in the rear of the center console keeps the back seat area comfortable. Large, simple to use controls make the system straightforward to use, even on cars equipped with the available Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™. With a full set of conventional button-type controls for the climate control system, it is not necessary to access basic climate control adjustments through the NAVI on-screen menus.

3-D Solar Sensing

With its position-sensing ability, the NAVI system contributes to overall passenger comfort with 3D Solar Sensing. Based on its continuously updated vehicle position information, the NAVI system can determine the position of the sun relative to the driver and passenger. With this information, the Acura Automatic Climate Control System automatically adjusts the temperature and system airflow from side-to-side as needed to compensate for asymmetrical solar heating. NAVI-equipped cars also offer the convenience of voice operation for some climate control functions.

Interior Color & Trim Combinations

To accommodate a wide range of buyer tastes, the TL interior comes in a wide range of colors. The leather-trimmed seating is available in Black, Ivory and Taupe in the TL, and in Taupe or contrasting Black and Taupe in the Type-S. Accent features vary based on the model. TL models have aluminum-alloy panels with rich Grand Anigre wood patterned accents. Type-S interior features aluminum-alloy panels with carbon fiber-look accents, and diagonal pattern contrast stitching on the door panel inserts as well as on the seats and steering wheel. The front seats also have the Type-S logo embossed on the headrests, and the Type-S badge is also on the bottom spoke of the steering wheel.

Keyless Memory Link And One Touch Start

A keyless entry system called Keyless Memory Link gives the TL a higher level of luxury and convenience by providing access to expanded keyless entry memory functions. The key and key fob have been combined for 2007 into a single "switchblade" key. Two keys are provided with the TL; each fob can be linked to one of two driver profiles. The key used to unlock the car triggers a specific driver profile and the system automatically positions the power driver's seat and outside mirrors to match that profile. Keyless Memory Link goes several steps farther, however, by including in the driver profile the climate control system and all seven of the customizable memory functions that are available via the MID (Multi-Info Display).

A number of functions are available via the key fob when outside the car. A single push of the "unlock" button will unlock only the driver's door; a second push unlocks all the doors. After unlocking all doors, holding down the "unlock" button down for more than one second will open the windows and moonroof to ventilate the car's interior.

Still more functions are available with the key in the lock on the driver's door. A single twist unlocks only the driver's door; a second twist unlocks all the doors. If you hold the key in the unlock position for more than one second, the moonroof and all the windows begin to open; return the key to the normal position and the windows stop. Holding the key in the "lock" position will close the moonroof and all windows.

A new feature for automatic-equipped TL and Type-S models is One Touch Start. The driver simply twists the key in the ignition to the "start" position and releases it, and the car will continue cranking until the engine has started. In the event of a problem, the One Touch Start system will stop after 8 to 10 seconds of starting and display a warning on the MID system.

Acura/ELS Premium 8-Speaker Surround Sound System With DVD-Audio, DTS™ And CD 6-Disc Changer, AM/FM Tuner And Dolby® Cassette

When introduced in 2004, the TL boasted the most advanced audio system in the industry. That continues today, with some important additions for 2007. The sophisticated Acura/ELS™ Premium 8-speaker Surround Sound System with DVD-Audio, DTS® and CD 6-disc Changer, AM/FM Tuner and Dolby® Cassette uses six different audio channels to create an accurate surround sound listening environment. There are speakers on the top of the instrument panel near the A-pillars, plus a center-fill speaker in the middle of the dash top. The two front doors each have a large driver, and in the rear parcel shelf there are two more drivers flanking an 8-inch subwoofer. In addition to the standard bass, treble, fader and balance controls, the system features additional subwoofer and center channel level controls.

Program material comes from a wide variety of sources. For 2007, the 6-disc changer can read discs encoded with MP3 or WMA files, and there is an auxiliary jack for use with an external MP3 player. There is an AM/FM tuner coupled with a powered, active glass antenna in the rear window to pull in weaker signals. XM® Satellite Radio is integrated into the receiver to provide more than 150 channels (more than half are commercial-free) of digital program material with near-CD quality sound. A text display in the center panel (or on the NAVI screen of cars so equipped) provides information text on the program material.

In addition, the TL system plays conventional cassettes, CDs, DTS discs and DVD Audio discs. DVD Audio is the next step in audio reproduction technology. Many new releases are being issued in this format, and many older recordings are being re-mastered and reissued to take advantage of the superior sound that DVD Audio offers. With over 500 times higher resolution than CD audio, DVD Audio delivers smoother, fuller and far more accurate sound through six discrete channels. The TL was the first vehicle in North American with this technology as standard equipment. (The system will not play DVD movies, DVD-V or DVD-R/RWs).

To make this capable system simple to operate, steering wheel mounted controls of key functions are positioned within fingertip reach. On cars equipped with the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition, select audio system functions can be accomplished via voice commands.

TLs without the available navigation system have a redesigned center stack. The climate control and audio system displays are now vacuum fluorescent displays, similar to high-end audio equipment, further reinforcing the high-tech appeal of the TL.

XM® Satellite Radio

XM® Satellite Radio lets TL drivers listen to over 150 digital channels, many of which are commercial-free, with near CD-quality sound.

XM's broadcast signal is beamed from two earth-station antennas at the XM studios in Washington D.C. to two broadcast satellites positioned more than 22,000 miles above the earth in geostationary orbit. The beams from these two broadcast satellites, one located over the west coast, one over the east coast, combine to span the entire continental U.S. while remaining stationary with respect to the land below. More than 1,000 ground antennas, or repeaters, keep the signal strong in challenging locales such as urban areas with tall buildings.

Programming includes 170 channels devoted to music, sports, talk, traffic, weather, children's programming and entertainment, the most of any satellite radio system. It also features 70 commercial-free channels.

XM hardware is embedded in the car's music system. When XM is being played, a display shows the current station, song title or artist's name. XM Satellite Radio service is priced at $12.95 per month. A complimentary three-month subscription to the XM Satellite Radio service is included with purchase of the TL and customers are able to continue the service or cancel any time after.

Multi-Information Display (MID)

To keep the driver informed of the car's status and to access multiple electronic functions the TL has a standard Multi-Information Display (MID). Redesigned with significantly higher resolution for 2007, this LED backlit screen is located directly below the speedometer in the gauge cluster. Controls for the MID have moved from the dash to the right side of the steering wheel. The MID is the interface for odometer/trip odometer, outside temperature, trip computer, custom memory settings, HandsFreeLink™ and vehicle warnings. Maintenance Minder alerts are also presented via the MID (see the Engine section of this press kit for more detail on Maintenance Minder).

The MID makes it easy to customize the function of many electronic features in the TL. Custom settings include automatic door locking/unlocking, key and remote unlock selection, keyless acknowledgement feedback, security re-lock timer, headlight auto-off timer and interior light dimming timer. To make it easy to track warnings (such as "Check fuel cap," or Maintenance Minder warnings) displayed on the MID, a memory feature lets you scroll through current warnings for review.

Handsfreelink™ Wireless Telephone Interface

To enhance driving safety and convenience, the TL has a standard HandsFreeLink™wireless telephone interface that is designed to work with Bluetooth®-enabled mobile phones with Hands-Free capabilities (sold separately). The TL system is compatible with Bluetooth-enabled cell phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP). After an initial, one-time "pairing" process, the TL communicates wirelessly and securely with the driver's cell phone when it's inside the car. The phone needs to be on, but can be stowed in a pocket, briefcase or purse-anywhere inside the vehicle cabin.

HandsFreeLink allows the driver to send or receive calls without taking his or her hands from the steering wheel. When a call comes in, the number of the incoming caller is displayed on the MID located in the instrument cluster. A ring tone is also played over the audio system. If the driver chooses to answer the call, a press of the steering wheel-mounted "Talk" button mutes the audio system and the incoming caller is heard over the audio system speakers. A microphone located in the overhead console picks up the driver's voice. Algorithms built into the system cancel "echo effect" and reduce background noise to improve the transmission quality of the driver's speech.

To send a hands free call, the driver can dial the number by voice, using fingertip controls mounted on the steering wheel to activate the system. The driver also can store up to 50 frequently called numbers with voice tags in the system's memory. Up to six different compatible mobile phones can be paired with the system.

For 2007, HandsFreeLinkhas been updated to incorporate the user's mobile phone book into its operation. This works in two ways. Users can import individual numbers from their phone into the voice dialing system. This is an alternative to entering a person's phone number separately through speech recognition. In addition, the entire phone's address book can be imported into the updated navigation system. These numbers can be accessed through the navigation system, or imported into the voice dialing system. For added security, imported numbers are only available after the user enters a personal identification number (PIN) before use. Additional information can be found at www.acura.com/handsfreelink (or www.handsfreelink.com).

Acura Navigation System With Voice Recognition™

The TL is available with the exceptionally capable and easy to use Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™ - it is standard on the Type-S. Updated for 2007, it features a large 8-inch display, a huge database covering over seven million points of interest, plus extensive voice-recognition capabilities.

Based on data from up to 12 orbiting Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition system tracks the vehicle's position. If the antenna (located on the rear parcel shelf) is blocked by a tunnel, tall building or parking garage, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle to keep the mapping information current and reliable until satellite reception is restored. A DVD is located in the trunk with the system's ECU. Updated DVD data discs are available on an annual basis on-line or by calling a toll-free number. Owners are made aware of the availability of new DVDs through the AcuraLink system.

The system can be controlled by voice, the conveniently positioned touch-screen display or via joystick positioned just below the display. For voice operation, the driver simply presses the "Talk" button on the steering wheel and says any of a number of preset command phrases. The system responds to a total of 293 phrases that are accessible through a variety of sub-menus.

When the "Talk" button is pressed, the audio system is automatically muted, and a microphone located in the overhead console receives the command. Commands can be given in plain English, like "Find nearest hospital," "Display gas stations," or "Find nearest Chinese restaurant." You can choose to display points of interest on the map (like restaurants, or grocery stores, for example), or have the system provide turn-by-turn navigation-all by voice. The extensive Points of Interest database includes phone numbers, which can be called easily using the HandsFreeLink system and the driver's cell phone. Once a Point of Interest has been selected, pushing the "Call" button on the touch screen dials the number. For 2007, POI can be searched by Zagat by selecting "Zagat" in the "Places" sub-menu.

The Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition can also be controlled via the touch screen by choosing menu options or spelling out a word (e.g., an address, business name or place) using a touch-sensitive on-screen keypad. The display's matte finish reduces glare and smudging, and the keypad can be set to alphabetical or a common typewriter style layout. For 2007, screen graphics have been improved both for appearance and legibility. Alternately, the joystick can be used to highlight menu options or to highlight specific letters on the keypad to complete a word.

New for 2007 is an integrated rear view camera. Whenever the 2007 TL is put in reverse, a small camera mounted above the rear license plate is activated. This wide-angle camera displays the area immediately behind the TL on the NAVI screen, making it easier to see objects directly behind the car that would otherwise be hidden from view.

Acuralink™ Satellite Communication System With Real-time Traffic

For 2007, TL models equipped with the Acura navigation system also receive AcuraLink™ satellite communication system with real-time traffic. AcuraLinkallows for two-way communication between Acura and the vehicle, providing customers with the latest information specific to their vehicle. In cases where communication to and from the Acura server is needed, the owner's Bluetooth™ cell phone is used (once the owner has enabled its data-transmission function and has a data package on their mobile phone).

AcuraLink messages consist of a limited amount of text plus expanded details via Text-To-Speech. Each message is prioritized by importance. High priority messages are displayed immediately upon receipt. Other lower priority messages trigger an icon on the TL navigation display when they are received. Messages show up when they are received or when their activation date is due. In all cases, the TL owner can choose to read or listen to the message immediately, or archive it to be retrieved later.

A wide variety of messages can be sent to the TL, including diagnostic Info (detailed information and instruction should an onboard system issue arise), information regarding a service or repair required, and Service Appointment Reminders. The TL owner has complete control over the types of messages they receive. All AcuraLink preferences can be set via the Owner Link web site.

Since the system allows two-way data communication between the TL and the Acura Server, AcuraLink can provide the owner with vital information that previously has been unavailable. For example, if a "Check Charging System" message is displayed on the TL instrument panel, AcuraLink will automatically send a trouble code to the Acura Server, which interprets the code, then sends a message back to the TL, such as "Battery Voltage is too low. Turn off any unnecessary accessories" with a prompt for more information by voice. This way, the owner knows if a particular fault is serious enough to warrant immediate attention, if it can be dealt with later or if it requires special driving techniques.

An icon on the TL navigation display screen indicates an incoming message. Messages show up as they are received or when their activation date is due.

Real-Time Traffic Information

The navigation screen can display up-to-the-minute traffic information including flow (traffic speed where available), accidents, incidents, freeway construction and weather on freeways in several major metro areas. The information is aggregated by NAVTEQ™ from multiple sources including police and highway patrol accident reports and transportation departments and then transmitted by XM satellites to the TL where it is graphically displayed on the navigation system from 1/2 to 5 mile scale.

The TL owner can click on an icon on the map to see incident details. Traffic information is continuously updated, allowing drivers to avoid congestion en route and choose the fastest path to their destination.

With the average rush-hour commuter spending over 50 hours a year sitting in traffic, the system gives TL owners a useful time saving tool on freeways. Unlike radio or television traffic reports, the real-time traffic system provides a constant flow of relevant information reflecting conditions along a driver's chosen route. Real-time traffic data services will be offered on a subscription basis for a nominal fee following a free trial period.

Active Noise Cancellation™

In order to provide a more hushed driving environment during highway cruising, the 2007 TL Type-S uses Active Noise Cancellation™ (ANC), which is designed to dramatically reduce low frequency exhaust booming noise in the interior. The system operates whenever the car is running, regardless of whether the audio system is on or off. There are two microphones in the headliner, one in the front passenger cabin, and another in the rear. The microphones capture low-end drivetrain frequencies entering the cabin, and send a signal to the Active Noise Cancellation unit hidden in the dash. The control unit then creates a precisely timed reverse phase audio signal that is sent to an amplifier, which powers the door speakers and the subwoofer positioned on the rear deck.

Since the system is designed to cancel low-frequency sound, it doesn't use any of the audio system's tweeters. The system dramatically reduces the booming sound of the exhaust, front and rear. In the rear seat, "boom" is reduced by a very impressive 17 db.

Interior Accessories

Acura dealers offer a range of interior accessories for the TL, including, shift knobs for Sequential SportShift automatic, all-season mats, trunk tray, cigarette lighter, ashtray, Acura MusicLink and carbon fiber and wood grain interior trim. A special steering wheel with a distinctive shape and stitching is also offered as part of the A-SPEC package. (See the Body & Chassis section for information on other available accessories.)

2007 Acura TL - Safety

Overview

The 2007 TL and TL Type-S were developed to help protect its occupants with a comprehensive array of safety technologies, high-grade materials and advanced construction techniques.

Weight sensors are incorporated in the front passenger seat to determine the total weight on that seat. If it is less than 65 pounds (as if occupied by a small child or car seat) the front airbag will not deploy and a warning message appears on the instrument panel. For the driver, a position sensor in the seat determines how the airbag will be deployed in the event of a frontal collision. If the seat is close to its forwardmost position, the front airbag is designed to deploy in the dual-stage mode. Otherwise, the airbag deploys in either single or dual-stage mode based on the severity of the collision and seat belt use.

The TL and TL Type-S also feature adjustable rear outboard head restraints, and standard side curtain airbags. These technologies, and the use of high-tensile steel in critical areas and computer-modeled crush zones, help to ensure a high level of passenger protection. The TL passed the toughest government safety tests with a 5-star frontal rating in addition to achieving a "GOOD" rating in all categories evaluated during the IIHS frontal offset collision. The TL safety equation even extends to pedestrians with structural elements designed to reduce the likelihood of serious injury in a collision.

Features

The TL offers its occupants the following Acura safety technologies:

  • Front 3-point Emergency Locking Retractors (ELR) with pretensioners
  • Front seat-belt load limiters
  • Front four-way adjustable head restraints
  • Front height and position sensors
  • Front driver and passenger seatbelt warning system with chime
  • Rear center three-point seat belt
  • Rear outboard two-way adjustable head restraints
  • Tether anchors
  • Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system for rear outboard positions
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Airbags

  • Dual-stage, dual-threshold front airbags with driver's seat position sensor and passenger's seat weight sensor
  • Front passenger's seat mounted side impact airbags with Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS)
  • Side curtain airbag system

Side Airbag System

The side airbags are located in the outboard seat side bolsters and deploy when sensors detect that a sufficient side impact is occurring. To help prevent injury to a small child or small-stature adult, an innovative passenger position sensing system prevents side airbag deployment if the passenger is leaning into the side airbag deployment path. A total of seven sensors in the passenger seatback determine the height and position of the occupant; this helps the system determine if it is safe to deploy the side airbag. When the passenger returns to an upright seating position, the side airbag will reactivate so it can deploy and help protect the passenger in a side impact.

Side Curtain Airbags

The side curtain airbags deploy from a module in the roof rail in the event of a sufficient side impact. They provide an important and significant level of head protection in the window area from the A-pillar back to the C-pillar. Research shows that the g forces affecting an occupant's head are considerably lower with a side curtain airbag.

The airbag module is located in the side of the roof and the gas pressure vessel is positioned in the C-pillar. It supplies gas to the airbag through a channel in the roof side. Front and rear "satellite" sensors (one located at the base of the B-pillar and another located near the rear seat back) detect side impacts and signal deployment.

Side Impact

The use of high-tensile steel significantly contributes to the side impact performance on both TL models in the government's tough SINCAP (Side Impact New Car Assessment Program) test. The TL's energy-absorbing body structure is built with high-strength steel in key areas to provide the required strength without excessive weight.

During a side impact collision, forces are distributed across the computer-engineered body structure, lessening forces that affect the occupants. Dual steel door beams in each front door and a single door beam in each rear door team with energy-absorbing padding to further absorb crash energy.

The TL passed the government SINCAP test with a 4-Star front seat and 5-Star rear seat rating.

The TL was developed with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Side Impact Crashworthiness Evaluation (SICE) in mind, and received a GOOD rating, the highest possible ranking.

Dual-Stage, Dual-Threshold Front Airbags

The TL is equipped with dual-stage, dual-threshold airbags for the driver and front passenger, and this system has been designed to meet federal safety regulations (FMVSS 208). The front airbags are designed to minimize the potential for airbag injury while providing head and chest protection for the front occupants in the event of a sufficient frontal collision. This front airbag system features additional sensors; front passenger seat weight sensors, and a driver's seat position sensor designed to enhance occupant protection.

The TL's front airbags can deploy at one of two rates. Deployment of the driver's side airbag takes into account the severity of the crash, whether or not the driver's seat belt is fastened and the position of the driver's seat. During a lower speed collision, the airbag inflators are triggered in sequence, resulting in slower overall airbag deployment with less initial force. The same sequence is also utilized regardless of collision speed if integrated sensors in the driver's seat register if it is at or near the full forward position. During a higher speed collision, if the driver's seat is far enough away from the full frontal position, both inflators operate simultaneously for full, immediate inflation. Airbag deployment on the front passenger's side is regulated by crash severity, seatbelt usage and the weight of the occupant. Integrated sensors under the seat gauge occupant weight and if the total weight on the passenger seat is less than 65 lbs, the airbag system will not deploy, minimizing the potential for injury to children. Just as the driver's side, the airbags are deployed at the speed appropriate to the speed and severity of the collision - slower for lower speed collisions, more quickly for higher speeds.

The driver's airbag is located in the steering wheel hub and the passenger's airbag is located on top of the dash. As in all Acura vehicles, the front passenger's airbag is designed to deploy upward toward the windshield and then back toward the occupant. This provides a large cushion to help protect the front passenger.

Front Impact

The 2007 TL underwent numerous internal front-impact tests to verify the vehicle structure and occupant-protection performance. Two of these tests include the government's New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) test and the Front Offset test conducted by the IIHS. These two standardized tests rate front impact occupant protection performance.

In the NCAP test the vehicle impacts a rigid barrier at 35 mph. During the IIHS front offset test, the vehicle impacts an offset deformable barrier at 40 mph with a 40-percent offset. The 2007 TL achieved a 5-Star rating for driver and passenger in the NCAP test and a GOOD rating for all points in the IIHS test, both garnering high rankings. Acura achieved these outstanding results with the implementation of pretensioners and load- limiting seat belts in conjunction with an energy-absorbing body structure that uses high-strength steel in critical locations.

Computer simulations determined the critical load paths, allowing the usage of high-strength steel to be strategically place the usage of high-strength steel. The use of high-strength steel helps to reduce the overall weight of the vehicle and reduces the amount of intrusion to a passenger safety cage-the rigid perimeter that envelops the occupant during a collision.

Bumper System

In addition to evaluating injury projections in collisions, the IIHS also evaluates vehicles for damage resistance in low-speed collisions. IIHS conducts four tests at 5 mph-front flat impact, front 30-degree impact, rear flat impact, and rear pole impact. The combined damage sustained during these four tests is the overall repair cost.

The target repair cost for these tests is less than the repair cost for the average TL competitor. The front and rear bumper systems on the TL get high marks. They incorporate high-strength rolled-form bumper beams and highly efficient thermoplastic energy absorbers to disperse low-speed collision energy.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

Introduced in the 2006 model year, the onboard Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is equipped with location and pressure indicators that warn the driver when the air pressure drops considerably in any tire. This helps reduce the chance of losing control of the vehicle due to low air pressure. This is important because a slow leak, such as one that might be caused by a nail embedded through the tread, might not be detectable immediately but would, in time, cause significant air loss, loss of grip and potentially a blowout.

A sensor mounted on each wheel continually monitors tire pressure and sends a coded signal to an initiator located inboard of the tire on the chassis. The information is then sent to an electronic control unit that compares the values of each tire against an acceptable set of values.

When a tire's pressure drops significantly below the proper specification, a "CHECK TIRE PRESSURE" alert appears on the MID alert screen. The system can display the air pressure in all four tires simultaneously via the MID, making it simple to locate a low tire. If there is a fault in the system, a "CHECK TPMS SYSTEM" alert appears.

At the driver's preference the display can continually show the air pressure in all four tires. Regardless of whether the driver chooses to monitor the pressures, a warning will still occur if a tire drops below a predetermined threshold.

Pedestrian Safety

Acura continues its commitment to safety by extending it to pedestrians. To help reduce pedestrian injuries in the event of a collision, the TL hood and fender areas were designed to deform if contacted by the head of an adult or child pedestrian. Energy-absorbing collapsible hood supports, wiper arms and fender mounts allow substantial deformation in an impact, allowing the engineering team to meet its target for pedestrian safety.

Active Safety Systems

Besides its passive safety features, the TL has a full complement of technologies designed to aid in driver control and in challenging driving conditions and circumstances.

These include:

  • Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD)
  • Brake Assist
  • Anti-lock braking system (ABS)
  • Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)
  • Expansive outside visibility
  • Xenon High-Intensity Discharge (HID) projector headlamps
