A 1.5-liter i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine works with Honda's unique, compact and lightweight Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system to supply both power and efficiency to the CR-Z. A sport-focused six-speed manual transmission is a first for any hybrid. An automatic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available and includes steering wheel paddle shifters for manual-like gear-ratio control. A new, exclusive 3-mode drive system allows the driver to configure the vehicle's responsiveness for Sport, Normal or Econ (Economy) driving modes. Driver efficiency tools include Eco Assist and Eco Scoring, which together can help drivers find improvements to efficient driving styles while also comparing economy achievements to previous trips and over the life of the vehicle.

CR-Z Highlights

  • All-new, two-passenger sport hybrid coupe with stylish and aggressive exterior
  • Gasoline-electric hybrid with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) technology
  • Driver-focused cockpit design with sport seats and 3-D instrumentation
  • New 3-mode drive system tailors throttle response, steering and IMA assistance to the driver's preference
  • Performance-engineered suspension design
  • Standard safety features: Front, side and side-curtain airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure

The exterior's "one-motion wedge" body form generates an aerodynamic, sporty style with a low hood and an aggressively wide stance. A lightweight, rigid platform and a chassis with a wide track, short wheelbase and performance-oriented suspension components include aluminum front lower control arms to elevate the vehicle's handling dynamics. The interior concept is fashioned around a high-tech coupe style and uses premium-quality materials, while also providing useful space for storage of everyday items.

Contributing to the fun-to-drive feel, the instrument panel's 3-D meter design with its colortransitioning outer ring harmonizes with the hybrid technology by changing from green (efficient) to blue (less efficient) as part of the Eco Assist system, or remaining solid red while in Sport mode.

The "3-mode" hybrid drive system allows for more individualized vehicle performance preferences with Sport, Normal and Econ modes. In Sport Mode capabilities include increasing the IMA power delivery curve at lower RPM and electronically recalibrating steering effort for an enhanced performance feel. Sport mode best represents the dynamically sporty aspect of driving the CR-Z. Alternatively and for increased efficiency, the Econ mode can work with the driver to "smooth" throttle inputs, reduce the air conditioning system's impact on fuel consumption and potentially activate idle stop sooner when coming to a stop, which is particularly beneficial during stop-and-go city driving. Normal mode provides a balance between Sport and Econ modes, and is a good option for any driving situation. Overall, the CR-Z is designed to encourage elevated efficiency while also providing agile and engaging performance previously unavailable in a hybrid vehicle.

Exterior Styling

Honda designers envisioned the CR-Z as a highly personal coupe that symbolizes a new era of style that is sporty yet environmental at the same time. The one-motion wedge form, compact dimensions, light-weight construction and aerodynamic design help to improve performance and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The progressively raked roofline and sharply truncated tail of the CR-Z is a feature shared with many Hondas past and present, including the CRX, first-generation Insight and the FCX Clarity. All of these cars have been designed to cut through the air with minimal disturbance, reducing aerodynamic drag to increase efficiency.

Interior Styling and Features

The interior of the CR-Z has been influenced by the cabin of the Tokyo Motor Show CR-Z Concept, especially the three-dimensional meter layout and driver-focused cabin. The high-tech instrument panel places many of the commonly used controls close to the driver's hands, allowing for full concentration on driving. The dashboard of the new coupe takes on a complex and immersive form, with a dark upper portion appearing to float above a matte gray lower dash section, which is continued into the center of the inner door panels. All models receive automatic climate control, six-speaker audio system with compact disc player, USB input for iPod®, power windows and locks, and keyless entry. The CR-Z EX adds a 360-watt high-power audio system that includes a subwoofer, steering wheel-integrated audio controls, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink, alloy pedals and more. The Honda Satellite-linked Navigation System with Voice Activation and 6.5-inch screen is available on the CR-Z EX. Different from CR-Zs in Europe and Asia, the North American model is exclusively equipped with a rear cargo console directly behind the seats. The hidden storage area can accommodate small items such as briefcases, laptops or duffle bags.

Powertrain

The CR-Z represents the sixth unique version of Honda's original IMA technology since the launch of the 2000 Insight - the first hybrid vehicle available in North America. The foundation of the CR-Z's hybrid powertrain is a 4-cylinder, 16-valve, single overhead cam engine with "intelligent" Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC) that receives additional power from the IMA system's 10- kilowatt DC brushless electric motor. The i-VTEC system controls the opening and closing of one intake valve per cylinder to enhance combustion at low RPM. The electric motor assists in acceleration and also acts as a generator during braking or coasting to capture kinetic energy that can recharge the 100.8-volt IMA nickel-metal hydride battery pack. The gasoline engine can automatically turn off during vehicle stops (idle stop) to improve efficiency.

The system delivers a combined peak output of 122 horsepower2 at 6,000 RPM and 128 lb-ft. of torque2 at 1,000 to 1,750 RPM (123 lb-ft at 1,000 to 2,000 on CVT-equipped models). EPAestimated fuel economy is 35/39/37 city/highway/combined miles per gallon3 on CVT-equipped models. Manual-transmission models achieve an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 31/37/34 city/highway/combined miles per gallon3.

When compared to the 250-plus nameplates of all currently available 2010 model-year automobiles in the U.S. (the most-recent data available at the time of printing), the 2011 CR-Z's combined EPA fuel economy rating of 37 mpg for the CVT-equipped version would place it among the top five of all models.

Plus, with the addition of the CR-Z to the lineup, Honda offers three of the top five highest-rated vehicles for combined EPA fuel economy currently available as either a 2010 or 2011 model.

Honda models within the top five for best combined fuel economy using the most currently available 2010 or 2011 data from the EPA are the Civic Hybrid, Insight and, now, CR-Z.

# Model EPA Combined Fuel Economy (MPG)
1 2010 Toyota Prius 50
2 2010 Honda Civic Hybrid 42
3 2010 Honda Insight 41
4 2010 Ford Fusion / Mercury Milan 39
5 2011 Honda CR-Z (CVT) 37
6 2010 smart fortwo 36

The CR-Z is rated as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) in states that adhere to California Air Resource Board (CARB) ZEV standards (EPA Tier 2, Bin 2 in all states). The CR-Z uses regular unleaded fuel.

The standard six-speed manual transmission is engineered for optimal acceleration performance in gears one through five and for optimal fuel economy in sixth gear. The available CVT provides the convenience of an automatic transmission with a seamless transition between minimum and maximum ratios, while also keeping the engine within an optimal RPM range for overall efficiency. To increase the performance potential of the CVT, paddle shifters located on the steering wheel allow the driver to simulate a stepped holding pattern like a manual transmission (seven increments total).

3-Mode Drive System with Eco Assist

The CR-Z's 3-mode drive system allows the driver to select between individual modes of performance for Sport, Normal and Economy driving styles. The system is activated via three backlit buttons to the left of the steering wheel. The Sport mode enhances multiple vehicle systems for performance including the engine throttle responsiveness, electric power steering effort, the power delivery curve for the electric motor power assist and the CVT (available) ratio control. The inner ring of the tachometer illuminates red when the vehicle is in Sport mode. During Econ mode operation, the engine's responsiveness is tuned for optimal economy, the electric motor assist gives priority to fuel efficiency and the air conditioning system can reduce its overall load on the engine. The inner ring of the tachometer transitions between blue and green when the vehicle is in Econ mode, with the green representing more efficient driving. Normal mode provides standard settings for steering, engine response, motor assist and air conditioning. Similar to Econ mode, the tachometer ring transitions between blue and green when the vehicle is in normal mode, with the green representing more efficient driving. Like the Honda Insight, the CR-Z offers an Eco Guide and Eco Scoring feature to help drivers track progress of efficient driving styles.

Chassis

With a low center of gravity and a wide track, the front MacPherson strut suspension and rear H-shaped torsion beam suspension settings are tuned to provide a sporty, solid and dynamic driving experience. All models are equipped with 16x6-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 195/55 R16 86V tires. Accessory 17x7-inch aluminum alloy wheels with 205/45 R17 84V tires are available as a dealer-installed accessory. The standard anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake distribution (EBD) uses ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. The low vehicle height and placement of the battery and other hybrid components beneath the rear cargo area further contribute to a low center of gravity for responsive, sporty handling. Electric Power-assisted rack-and-pinion Steering (EPS) improves overall vehicle efficiency compared to a conventional hydraulic power steering system and is tuned in the CR-Z for a firm driving feel and communicative steering feedback - even more when Sport mode is selected. New EPS programming algorithms being introduced on the CR-Z add a new dimension of feedback control (in all modes) that can optimally match the assist and self-aligning forces related to the driver's input with the vehicle's path through a corner. When starting on steep inclines from a stop in manual transmission-equipped CR-Zs, hill start assist temporarily minimizes the potential for the vehicle to roll backwards during the moment between releasing the brake, depressing the throttle and releasing the clutch (braking force tapers off after a duration of approximately 1 second).

Safety Technology

In addition to having a low environmental impact, the CR-Z demonstrates the Honda commitment to safety in the vehicle's design and construction. The Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is designed to help protect vehicle occupants in a frontal collision. Additional safety technologies include standard dual-stage, multiplethreshold front airbags; standard front-side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS); side-curtain airbags, active head restraints; an anti-lock braking system; a tire pressure monitoring system; and a pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle.

Features and Equipment

The two trim levels include the well-equipped CR-Z (base) and the feature-rich CR-Z EX. A sixspeed manual transmission is standard equipment and a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available on both models. Standard features on the CR-Z include Vehicle Stability Assist, an AM/FM/CD/USB audio system with six speakers, automatic climate control, power windows and door locks, remote entry, cruise control, and more. The CR-Z EX adds a 360-watt AM/FM/CD high-power audio system with seven speakers including subwoofer, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, perforated leather-wrapped steering wheel, and more. The CR-Z EX is available with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System2 with Voice Recognition.

2 The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ is available on the CR-Z EX in the United States, except Alaska. Please see the navigation system manual for details.

Honda CRX Heritage

The exterior design of CR-Z deliberately evokes the iconic style of the 1980s and 1990s Honda CRX, which was originally developed to provide a small, stylish car that could achieve excellent fuel economy. Signature features of the CRX, like the split-level rear glass hatch of the second generation model and the low, shallow raked roofline have been referenced in the design of the sleek coupe and then combined with a curvaceous and deeply sculpted exterior form.

Manufacturing

The Honda CR-Z, in addition to the Civic Hybrid and Insight, is produced at the Suzuka Factory in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture, Japan. In 2008, the factory added a second engine line to expand production of IMA hybrid system motors.

2011 Honda CR-Z - Body

Overview
The body of the 2011 CR-Z is designed to be stylish and aerodynamic while offering high levels of safety protection. Structural technology includes the Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure, an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. Extensive application of high-strength steel (45 percent) contributes to high levels of overall body rigidity, reduced weight and enhanced safety potential. A rigid body structure allows the it to remain steady while the suspension moves freely, resulting in a smooth ride and a solid, "connected-to-the-road" feel. The CR-Z's structural architecture is shared with the Honda Fit and Insight, but it has smaller dimensions compared its platform relatives.

Body Highlights

  • Sporty, 2-passenger coupe with an aerodynamic, sleek style
  • Rigid and lightweight unit-body design with 45% high-strength steel (590 MPa or above)
  • ACE body structure for enhanced safety in frontal collisions
  • Pedestrian injury mitigation design in the front of the vehicle
  • Dimensions L x W x H (inches): 160.6 x 68.5 x 54.9
  • Uniquely curved windshield design with wraparound appearance
  • HID Headlights (CR-Z EX) and LED taillights

Exterior Design Concept

The CR-Z's exterior styling is formed around a "one-motion wedge" concept with a long and low hood line, along with a wide stance that is intended to give the car a sleek, athletic look. Signature Honda design features, including the split-level rear glass hatch and aerodynamic, progressively-raked roofline, have been referenced in the design of the sleek coupe and then combined with a curvaceous and deeply sculpted exterior form. Deeply drawn body panels and fenders convey strength and solidity, while the sheet metal provides a high-tension look, as if the metal was stretched and pulled tightly over the exterior framework.

Body Construction

The body is a unit body design with innovative solutions to ensure the styling did not compromise the usability or dynamic responses of the CR-Z. The engineers wanted to create a stiff body design to ensure that dynamic responses met expectations consistent with the styling. To achieve this, metal gussets are used in critical areas around the front and rear suspension turrets to provide a firm base for excellent suspension control. Significant engineering achievements include deeply drawn front and rear fenders, along with the transition from negative to positive stamped shapes and the sharp character lines on the sides of the vehicle.

Structural enhancements and substantial use of high-strength steel can be found throughout the vehicle to enhance its rigidity and contribute to the vehicle's sporty dynamics. Specially constructed components include reinforcement gussets that connect the bulkhead area to the front strut tower area, which has a similar effect as adding a tower bar between the strut towers. Stiffeners were also applied to the rear damper bases in order to reduce lateral deformation that can occur during sporty driving. Two additional body-reinforcement performance rods are located under the rear floor in front of the H-shaped torsion beam rear suspension. The performance rods reinforce the two rear compliance bushings where the torsion beam connects to the sub-frame, and contribute significantly to the solid driving feel. Structural stiffness around the large hatch opening has been increased by reinforcements at all cross sections that unite to create a structurally "closed" section. As with all recent Honda models starting with the 2005 Odyssey, the CR-Z has an ACE body structure (see safety section for more information). The CR-Z for North America has 5 mph bumpers front and rear.

Aerodynamic Enhancements

Generally, a car with less length offers greater challenges for aerodynamic airflow control since the length where flow control can be carried out is also shorter. Yet, overall aerodynamic efficiency (CdA) equals the impressive achievement of the 2010 Insight, which is 11.7 inches longer. The CR-Z's roof slope and length is critical to its overall aerodynamic performance, and the stylists and engineers worked together to create the longest roof length possible while maintaining the visual balance of the car. The curvature of the A pillars along with the smoothness of the front windshield rain gutter design helps to improve airflow and reduce turbulence in this important area of the vehicle. The rear of the CR-Z has a particularly important role to play in overall aerodynamics and many hours of wind tunnel testing went into refining the final design.

The curvature and shape of the rear hatch and glass area are a part of the significant drag reduction measures along with strongly flared rear fender arches. Airflow is strategically managed over all parts of the rear bodywork, which tapers to prevent air turbulence behind the vehicle. The door side mirrors have been tuned to form a highly aerodynamic shape, supported by a wing form stay, which combines visual appeal with a low drag design. The underbody is also designed for optimal aerodynamics with a flat, even floor. Lightweight plastic parts under the engine bay, the fuel tank and parts of the rear underbody have been added to enhance air flow. The front spoiler and front and rear strakes help direct air flow around the tires and wheel wells.

An air guide under the front bumper directs the flow of air into the engine chamber for cooling. The rear bumper cover's diffuser masks the exhaust pipe on the CR-Z, giving it a balanced look to the rear of the car and aiding the efficient management of airflow under the rear of the car. The diffuser has been coated in a material containing aluminum flakes to give a metallic appearance to the finish.

Windshield, Glass and Overall Visibility

The windshield and front windows take on an integrated, wrap-around look through the use of nearly flush-mounted glass and a gloss black surface finish applied to the A pillars. From a distance the overall effect simulates the appearance of a mono-form cabin design with a single piece of wrap-around glass. The wrap-around effect is made possible through the application of hidden rain gutters integrated into the front pillars that reduce the usual step between the edge of the windshield and the A pillar by 50 percent, contributing to a significant aerodynamic improvement. The angle of curvature at the edge of the windshield of the CR-Z is the greatest of any current Honda model. Not only was forward visibility enhanced by curving the glass around the sides of the car, but a thin A-pillar design that measures 108.8 mm in minimal thickness contributes to forward visibility. The A-pillar strength is optimized through the use of high-grade, high-tensile steel of class 780MPa. From an overall vehicle styling standpoint, the wrap-around windshield positions the A-pillars further back in the side profile, giving the hood a proportionally longer and lower appearance. The rear hatch's split-level window design with a large upper glass section and a smaller vertical lower glass section optimizes outward visibility and accommodates the rear spoiler, which divides the two areas.

Sound Absorption Materials

The CR-Z is designed to provide an exceptionally smooth drive and with reduced noise intrusion into the cabin. Lightweight sound-absorption materials in the roof, carpets and dashboard help keep the cabin quiet and vehicle weight down.

Door Design and Construction

The CR-Z's doors are designed to operate with solid precision with a convenient three-stage detent hinge. Compared to the platform relatives Fit and Insight, the CR-Z's coupe design results in larger doors, so additional reinforcements have been used to increase the connection efficiency at critical junctures around and near the door opening.

An automatic door locking/unlocking system is customizable by driver preference. Automatic locking can be linked to vehicle speed reaching 10 mph, or the gear shift lever shifting from park (on CVT models), or it can be deactivated entirely. Automatic unlocking, configurable to just the driver's door or all doors, can be linked to the ignition switch being turned to the off position, or the gear shift lever being positioned in the park position (CVT models only), or it can be turned off entirely. The factory default for locking is linked to vehicle speed. The factory default for unlocking is linked to the gear shift lever (CVT models) or the ignition switch (MT models), which unlocks only the driver's door when the ignition is turned off (unless reconfigured by the driver). Easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions for configuring the automatic door lock operations are included in the owner's manual.

Rear Hatch

The split window rear hatch design has been used on multiple Honda models including the original 1984 Honda CRX, both the 2000 and 2010 Insights, the 2008 FCX Clarity, and now the 2011 CR-Z. Compared to a conventional hatch design with a single window, the split-window design allows for a higher roofline to improve aerodynamics while also enhancing the lower field-of-view directly behind the vehicle. The rear hatch incorporates a two-speed, intermittent wiper with washer on the upper window. The width of the opening measures 38.9 inches (990 mm).

Projector Beam HID Headlights

The CR-Z EX is exclusively equipped with Xenon High Intensity Discharge (HID) projectorstyle low-beam headlights as a premium feature. The HID lights feature a mercury-free design to be more environmentally responsible. The primary operational benefit of the HID projector headlights is a bright and precisely focused light beam for confident nighttime driving, along with an aggressive and technical appearance. It also provides incrementally lower energy usage compared to conventional sealed-beam designs. Halogen high beams are mounted inboard of the projector beams, and offer further nighttime driving confidence with a crisp, bright and focused light beam. The base CR-Z is equipped with halogen projector-beam headlights. The halogen high-beams serve double duty as the daytime running lights (DRL) by operating at a lower voltage. The CR-Z EX adds integrated fog lamps located in an opening below the front bumper.

LED Brake Lights

The taillight system features attention-grabbing LED point lighting for the brake lights and softglowing surface lighting for the tail lights. The sculpted, three-dimensional look of the units adds a distinctive and technical styling element to the rear view of the CR-Z. Additionally, LED lighting uses less power compared to tungsten light bulbs, which is consistent with the vehicle's emphasis on efficiency.

Side Mirrors with Integrated Turn Signals

The vehicle's side mirrors are aerodynamically optimized to prevent wind noise and minimize turbulence. Integrated turn signals in the mirror provide a premium appearance and repeat the front and rear turn signal indicators. To enhance the CR-Z rearward sightlines, the side mirrors reflect a wider field-of-view compared to conventional side mirrors, 1.00R (wide view) vs. 1.400R (conventional), and compliment the view from the rear quarter window. The CR-Z EX models include heated side mirrors.

2011 Honda CR-Z - Chassis

Overview

The front MacPherson strut suspension and rear H-shaped torsion beam suspension are tuned to provide a sporty, solid and dynamic driving experience. The standard Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and brake assist uses ventilated front discs and solid rear discs. The low vehicle height and the location of the battery and related hybrid components beneath the rear cargo area further contribute to a low center of gravity, which is key to the CR-Z's responsive and sporty handling character. Electric power-assisted rack-andpinion steering offers direct-feeling steering performance and improved efficiency.

CR-Z Chassis Highlights

  • MacPherson Strut front suspension
  • Lightweight aluminum front lower control arms
  • H-shaped torsion beam rear suspension
  • Electric Power Steering (EPS)
  • Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)
  • 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist
  • Front and rear stabilizer bars
  • 16-inch alloy wheels

The basic architecture of the suspension for the CR-Z is similar to the Insight and the Fit. Changes have been made to components to suit the sporty nature of the CR-Z in order to maximize driver enjoyment. The springs, dampers and anti-roll bars are unique and suit the different characteristics of the CR-Z. The lower arms of the front MacPherson strut suspension are forged aluminum, rather than pressed steel, to reduce unsprung weight and increase responsiveness.

Compared to the Insight, the most significant change to the platform is the reduction in wheelbase by 4.5 inches (115 mm), which increases the feeling of agility as the car rotates around a geometrically shorter distance while turning, and the reduction in overall length by 11.7 inches (300 mm). Along with the reduction in wheelbase the track width has been increased by 0.8 inches (20 mm) in the front and 1.0 inches (25 mm) in the rear to enhance the feeling of stability.

MacPherson Strut Front Suspension with Aluminum Control Arms

The MacPherson strut front suspension is engineered to provide engaging performance and a responsive feel for the driver. High-rigidity bushings along with performancecalibrated geometry ensure optimal wheel alignment while turning for a solid and smooth handling feel. The front suspension's lower control arms are made from forged aluminum instead of conventional stamped steel to reduce unsprung weight by a total of 8.8 pounds (4.0 kg) compared to the Insight's stamped steel control arms. The forged aluminum control arms also offer greater rigidity compared to steel, which complements the greater forces generated by the increased track width and tire size.

H-Shaped Torsion Beam Rear Suspension

The rear suspension is an H-shaped Torsion beam designed to provide excellent control of the rear wheels. The space-efficient layout also creates room for the low mounting of the IMA batteries and control unit. The mounting of the IMA system's batteries below the cargo floor, and the low overall height of the CR-Z provide handling benefits by lowering the center of gravity for the coupe. The trailing arms in the CR-Z are modified to increase track width and increase strength. Special performance rods reinforce the two rear compliance bushings where the torsion beams connect to the sub-frame, and contribute significantly to a solid driving feel.

Electric Power Steering (EPS)

The CR-Z uses a high-power, variable-assist Electric Power Steering (EPS) system in place of a conventional hydraulic power steering system. The EPS system consists of a rack-and-pinion steering gear with an electric motor installed concentrically around the steering rack. The rackand- pinion steering rack functions with higher levels of assist at lower speeds for ease-ofmaneuvering and minimal amounts of assist at higher vehicle speeds for stable driving.

To control the level of assist the Powertrain Control Module receives signals from a speed sensor and, coupled with a steering sensor for torque and rotation, then calculates the optimal amount of assist and sends a signal to the electric motor. When compared to the operation of a conventional hydraulic pump power steering system, the more simple and lightweight EPS system increases efficiency because it does not draw a continuous amount of power directly from the engine. The steering ratio is 12.75:1, resulting in 2.48 turns lock-to-lock.

The CR-Z EPS operating software uses a new control algorithm that can correct certain aspects of steering wheel input "overshoot" by calculating the appropriate steering angle relative to the movement of the vehicle, and then proportioning either the power assist, and/or the return force resistance (self-alignment torque) of the EPS as appropriate. The end result is a confidence-inspiring steering feel and potentially smoother cornering dynamics during enthusiastic driving.

The EPS software programming used on the 2011 CR-Z allows for two user-configurable settings for steering firmness (less firm in Normal and ECON modes, more firm in Sport mode). The more-aggressive setting while in Sport mode increases the steering effort to enhance the feel of connectedness between the road and the driver.

4-Wheel Disc Brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

The CR-Z's 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes are equipped with 10.3-inch ventilated front discs (0.4-inch rotor thickness) and double piston calipers. The rear disc brakes are 10.2-inch solid discs (0.35-inch rotor thickness) with single piston calipers. Stopping is enhanced by 4-channel ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and brake assist. The 4-channel ABS independently modulates braking power at each wheel. Electronic Brake Distribution proportions brake power to the rear wheels based on vehicle weight distribution. A 9-inch power brake booster offers a solid feel with high pedal rigidity and a performance-oriented pedal stroke. Brake assist recognizes emergency braking situations and almost instantly applies added braking force when appropriate (see Safety for more information on brake assist).

Wheels and Tires

All models are equipped with 16x6-inch aluminum wheels with P195/55R16 86V tires. Accessory 17x7-inch alloy wheels with P205/45R17 84V tires are available at the dealer.

Fuel Tank

The 10.6-gallon composite fuel tank, located in front of the rear suspension torsion beam in the CR-Z, is a critical component in compliance with Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emission Vehicle (AT-PZEV) regulations that require a zero-evaporative emissions fuel tank. A polyethylene composite design meets the zero-level evaporative emissions performance level while also minimizing weight and allowing for greater fuel capacity.

Hill Start Assist (Manual Transmission Models Only)

When starting on steep inclines from a stop in manual transmission-equipped CR-Zs, hill start assist temporarily prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards during the moment between releasing the brake, depressing the throttle and releasing the clutch (for a duration of approximately 1.5 seconds). To prevent rollback, the VSA system recognizes the idle-stop status and upon pedal release slowly reduces brake pressure from each of the wheels. In doing so, each brake caliper maintains a small amount of braking pressure until the driver accelerates the car.

2011 Honda CR-Z - Powertrain

Overview

Performance and driver enjoyment can often be viewed as conflicting elements to good fuel economy and low emission levels. The challenge of the CR-Z powertrain development team was to overcome this traditional trade-off between performance and the environment by developing an approach that could satisfy a new era of environmentally conscious enthusiast drivers. As the first sport hybrid coupe introduced for retail sale in North America, the all-new CR-Z is intended to demonstrate how green technology can also be fun and sporty.

Powertrain Highlights

  • 1.5-liter SOHC 16-valve i-VTEC 4-cylinder engine with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA)
  • High-power, lightweight, ultra-thin hybrid electric motor
  • Lightweight, compact and durable Intelligent Power Unit (IPU)
  • New 3-mode drive system with Sport, Normal and Econ modes
  • Six-speed manual transmission (first ever for a hybrid) or available CVT

Now in its sixth unique version since debuting on the original 2000 Insight, the compact and simple-in-concept Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system is a parallel hybrid powertrain that increases efficiency through the electric motor's power assist, energy regeneration and idle-stop capabilities. The CR-Z's 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder, 16-valve i-VTEC gasoline engine serves as the primary power source and is designed to provide driver enjoyment with its responsive performance, a broad torque band and enthusiastic engine note. A 10-kilowatt, ultra-thin electric motor works in tandem with the gasoline engine to provide additional power and electricity generation as needed. Electricity is stored and delivered through a lightweight and compact 100.8-volt battery and power control system.

The hybrid-electric motor's broad torque band with instantaneous torque at low RPM is designed to complement the CR-Z's standard six-speed manual transmission particularly well in city driving. The broad torque band contributes to sporty acceleration and reducing the need to shift as frequently in order to stay within the engine's power band (compared to conventional gasoline-engine vehicles).

A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is available and offers elevated levels of fuel economy. A driver-selectable 3-mode drive system allows the vehicle to be operated in Sport, Normal or Econ mode to help maximize either performance or economy. Sport mode enhances the power delivery curve from the IMA system. Eco Assist and Eco Score are provided as driver efficiency tracking tools with real-time and cumulative feedback to economical driving styles.

Combined, the gasoline engine and electric motor produce a peak output of 122 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 128 lb-ft. of torque at 1,000 to 1,750 RPM on manual transmission models (123 lbft at 1,000 to 2,000 on CVT-equipped models). Individually, the gasoline engine produces 113 horsepower (84 kW) @ 6,000 RPM and 107 lb-ft. (144 Newton meters) of torque at 4,800 RPM. The electric motor can add a maximum of 13 horsepower (10 kW) @1,500 RPM and 58 lb-ft. of torque at 1,000 RPM. The peak outputs for the gasoline engine and the electric motor occur at different RPM ranges, resulting in a broad power curve and a wider range of performance than a similar-sized, conventional gasoline-powered vehicle or an electric-only vehicle.

Background: Measurement of Combined Horsepower and Torque in Hybrid Powertrains Since the peak output for the CR-Z's gasoline engine and electric motor occur at significantly different RPM ranges, the combined rating for horsepower and the combined rating for torque represent the operational capability measured at the output shaft when the two systems are functioning together as a single system. Therefore, combined power ratings for Honda hybrid vehicles represent peak power delivery in real-world operating conditions and take into account the unique RPM when each peak occurs. The combined power numbers do not represent the simple addition of the peak numbers for the gasoline engine and electric motor. This calculation method is why 112 horsepower (gasoline engine) plus 13 horsepower (electric motor) equals a combined output of 122 horsepower (not 125 horsepower combined).

1.5-Liter 16-valve SOHC i-VTEC 4-Cylinder Engine

The CR-Z's 1.5-liter i-VTEC all-aluminum engine offers a balance between high fuel economy and funto- drive performance. The engine displaces 1,497 cc and has a 10.4:1 compression ratio. The underbore design has a bore and stroke measuring 73 mm x 89 mm, respectively. The compact i- VTEC cylinder head utilizes a narrow, 30- degree design between the intake and exhaust valves, contributing to the engine's overall compact size. Friction-reducing technologies include roller-bearing tipped rocker arms, a low-friction timing chain tensioner, molybdenum-coated piston skirts and an offset crankshaft and connecting rod design.

i-VTEC Valvetrain

Part of the balance between efficiency and power is made possible by Honda's i- VTEC variable valve timing system. In the CR-Z's 16-valve SOHC engine, the i- VTEC system employs a two-rocker arm design (per cylinder on the intake valves) with friction-reducing roller followers for each pair of intake valves, along with intake cam lobes configured to optimize both low- and highspeed operation. A chain drive connects the crankshaft to the camshaft. Depending on engine load and RPM, an electronic controller determines which cam profile will be used and exactly how the intake valves will operate.

At low RPM, where low lift and shorter duration provide optimal operation, the timing of the two intake valves is staggered and the lift asymmetrically skewed in favor of the primary valve. This helps to create a swirl effect within the combustion chamber that increases the efficiency of the burn process. Above approximately 2,300 RPM, a hydraulically actuated spool valve causes a locking pin to engage the secondary rocker arm with the primary one, transitioning the secondary valve into a long-duration mode that increases the volume of air/fuel mixture moving into the combustion chamber. The additional air/fuel mixture helps increase power at high RPM.

Compact Intake Manifold

The lightweight and compact composite intake manifold provides sufficient clearance for the CRZ's low hood while still maintaining enough clearance for Honda's internal standards for pedestrian protection.

Electronic Drive-by-Wire Throttle Control

Continuously optimizing the ratio of movement between the throttle pedal and the throttle butterfly valve in the intake manifold, Drive-by-Wire optimizes engine response and IMA operation to match driving conditions and driver expectations for throttle input. The system uses a highly responsive DC motor to change the throttle position quickly and precisely.

Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI)

The Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) is a lightweight, compact system that ensures optimal air-fuel ratio by monitoring throttle position, engine temperature, intake-manifold pressure, intake-air mass flow, atmospheric pressure, exhaust-gas oxygen content and intake-air temperature to control fuel delivery via four multi-holed injectors mounted in the intake port of the cylinder head.

Direct Ignition System with Dual-Probe Spark Plugs

The CR-Z has a direct ignition system with a coil unit for each cylinder, positioned within each spark plug's access bore. The CR-Z uses dual-probe spark plugs for faster mixture ignition speed and improved combustion stability. With the spark arcing just beyond the relatively large surface of the ground area, the air/fuel mixture is exposed to a larger portion of the spark, which enhances stable combustion.

Maintenance Minder System and Tune-Up Intervals

The Maintenance Minder™ system calculates the engine's tune-up schedule based on driving conditions tracked by the Powertrain Control Module. When determining proper maintenance intervals, the system minimizes owner guesswork about whether the vehicle is being operated in standard or severe conditions. The Maintenance Minder information appears in the Multi- Information Display, and indicates when to change the oil, oil filter (every other oil change), air cleaner, transmission fluid, spark plugs and coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires. A tune-up is not required until 100K+/- Miles No Scheduled Tune-ups*.
*May vary with driving conditions. Does not apply to fluid and filter changes. Exact mileage is determined by actual driving conditions. The owner's manual contains full detail.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness Reduction

A subframe torque rod damper system reduces engine rocking and helps to isolate powertrain noise and vibration from the passenger compartment. Hydraulic engine mounts and reinforcements in the engine compartment help to further reduce engine noise and vibration for a more comfortable ride.

Sport-Tuned Exhaust System

The CR-Z's exhaust system has been designed to express a sporty performance character note that increases smoothly and proportionally with increasing engine speed. Typically, the exhaust note of a performance-oriented car sounds most impressive in the mid-range audio frequencies. Mid-frequencies are often perceived as desirable compared to low frequencies or high frequencies that can convey undesirable noise - like drumming noise or road noise during idling or cruising conditions. The CR-Z's exhaust system achieves its sporty sound by closely coordinating the exhaust frequency orders produced by the muffler with the vehicle body's resonate properties.

This approach prevents certain, undesirable sounds from entering the cabin while desirable sounds are allowed inside. Contributing to the sporty note, the layout of the resonator chambers inside the muffler is divided into several expansion chambers by separator walls connected by pipes, which have small holes that allow exhaust gas to flow through. When gas flows through these expansion chambers it emits sound exclusive to the length and diameter of the pipes.

From idle to 3000 RPM, where the CR-Z would typically operate under normal driving, the vehicle expresses a distinct-yet-subtle exhaust note that suggests power. The sound of second order booming noise at low engine speed is reduced, which leaves the most-desirable aspects of the engine note, the 4th order exhaust sound, as the most-prominent vehicle operation sound inside the cabin. At higher RPM, the exhaust note has been tuned to coordinate with the frequencies inherent to the vehicle's body. Unwanted resonance frequencies have been minimized by calibrating the noise-insulating properties of the engine mounts and by using conventional insulation material throughout the vehicle.

Additional measures have been taken to tune the exhaust note specifically for manual-transmission models and the CVT models due to the different gearing principles, and subsequently unique engine speeds at a given velocity. The manual transmission and the CVT each have unique expansion chamber layouts that have been optimized to achieve a good sound for both versions.

Fuel Economy and Emissions

EPA-estimated fuel economy is rated at 35/39/37 city/highway/combined miles per gallon3 on CVT-equipped models. Manual transmission models are EPA-rated at 31/37/34 city/highway/combined miles per gallon3. The CR-Z is rated as an Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) in states that adhere to California Air Resource Board (CARB) ZEV standards (EPA Tier 2, Bin 2 in all states). Low emissions are a key trait of every Honda engine, and the CR-Z employs an oblique flow catalytic converter (increases contact area of exhaust gas inside catalyst), stainless steel exhaust pipes (fast warm up, good heat dissipation and low weight) and a conventional exhaust gas recirculation system (re-routes part of the exhaust gas back into the intake air fuel mixture). To keep operating costs at a minimum, the CR-Z is designed to use regular unleaded fuel.

Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) Overview

As with previous versions, the IMA system consists of an ultra-thin DC brushless electric motor mounted between the gasoline engine and the transmission, and an Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) that stores electric power in a compact battery box and controls the flow of electricity to and from the electric motor.

10 kW DC Brushless Electric Motor

The ultra-thin DC brushless electric motor contributes up to 13 hp (10 kilowatts) @ 1,500 RPM and 58 lb-ft. of torque @ 1,000 RPM to the CR-Z gasoline engine output, assisting primarily in acceleration and some steady-state cruising situations. The motor also acts as a generator during braking, some steady-state cruising, gentle deceleration and coasting to capture kinetic energy and recharge the battery. The ultra-compact electric motor, measuring 61 mm in case width, is located between the engine and transmission (clutch on manual transmission models), and is an AC synchronous three-phase electric motor.

Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) with Nickel Metal Hydride Battery Pack

The Intelligent Power Unit (IPU) controls the power of the IMA system. The IPU contains the energy storage module (battery), Power Control Unit (PCU), motor Electric Control Unit (ECU), and a compact air-flow cooling system. The IPU is located beneath the rear cargo area for minimal impact on interior space. The nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery system consists of seven modules that send power to the electric motor as it assists the engine. It also stores the electricity when the motor generates electricity during regenerative braking. The seven-module battery system is comprised of 84 individual "D-sized" 1.2-volt cells for a total battery system output of 100.8 volts and a capacity of 5.75 ampere-hours.

IMA System Operation

The CR-Z's regenerative braking system apportions braking power in a linear fashion between the hydraulic brakes and the electric motor, allowing the IMA system to extract electricity from the vehicle's kinetic energy at a pre-set rate. During braking, a braking pressure sensor sends a signal to the IPU, which engages the regenerative braking via the electric motor performing as a generator. The linear aspect of the braking system results in a firm, direct feel consistent with a sporty car.

Automatic Idle Stop

The CR-Z automatically turns off the gasoline engine during complete stops under normal operating conditions. This feature allows the vehicle to use even less fuel and emit fewer emissions than a conventional automobile. The system uses the IMA electric motor to restart the engine. When the air conditioner is in use, selecting Econ mode can increase the potential for the idle-stop feature to keep the engine deactivated for a longer duration of time under certain conditions.

3-Mode Drive System

The CR-Z's 3-mode drive system allows the driver to select between individual modes of performance for Sport, Normal and Economy driving styles. The system is activated via three backlit buttons to the left of the steering wheel.

Sport Mode

The Sport mode enhances multiple vehicle systems for performance including the engine throttle responsiveness, electric power steering effort, the electric motor power assist and CVT (available) gear ratio. The inner ring of the tachometer illuminates red when the vehicle is in Sport mode.

Pushing the Sport Mode button influences the following systems (compared to Normal Mode):

  • Additional IMA electrical power available during acceleration (exclusive to 6MT model)
  • Steering assist becomes firmer and more direct
  • DBW throttle angle optimized for enhanced acceleration feel
  • CVT (if equipped) transmission ratios are optimized lower to maintain higher engine RPM and quicker acceleration
  • A/C operates normally

Normal Mode

Normal mode provides standard settings for steering, engine response, motor assist and air conditioning. Similar to Econ mode, the tachometer ring transitions between blue and green when the vehicle is in normal mode, with the green representing more efficient driving. At startup the vehicle will default to Normal mode if the vehicle was previously driven in Sport mode.

  • Steering assist is normal
  • DBW throttle angle optimized for linear acceleration feel
  • CVT (if equipped) transmission ratios are optimized for greater economy
  • A/C operates normally

Econ Mode

During Econ mode operation, the engine's responsiveness is tuned for optimal economy, the electric motor assist gives priority to fuel efficiency and the air conditioning system can reduce its overall load on the engine.

Pushing the Econ button initiates a range of functions that increase the fuel economy of the CR-Z's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system:

  • DBW throttle angle optimized for smoother acceleration and maintains lowest possible engine RPM
  • Reduces automatic climate control blower fan speed and minimizes A/C compressor engagement whenever possible
  • CVT (if equipped) transmission ratios are optimized higher (relative to engine RPM) for greater economy
  • Limits power and torque by approximately 4 percent (full responsiveness is provided at wide-open-throttle)
  • Cruise control uses a smaller throttle opening angle whenever possible
  • Steering assist is normal

Ecological Drive Assist (Eco Assist)

The Ecological Drive Assist System (Eco Assist™) is a fuel economy information system designed to help the driver develop and maintain a fuel-efficient driving style. The system monitors driving style, and can display the impact of a driving style on the vehicle's fuel economy. The system also provides feedback that can help the driver make adjustments to driving style. The system guides drivers in accelerating and braking in ways that consume less fuel, and in taking better advantage of regenerative braking. Using these tools, the driver can achieve improved fuel economy performance.

The feedback provided by Eco Assist simply and effectively helps drivers accelerate and brake in ways conducive to enhanced fuel economy. Fuel-saving activities like smooth acceleration and braking make the inner ring glow green. Somewhat less-efficient driving makes the meter glow blue-green. Aggressive starts and stops that consume extra fuel make the meter glow blue. By observing the inner ring's response to driving practices and seeking to achieve a consistently green color, drivers can receive assistance in developing driving habits that typically enhance fuel economy.

Maintenance Minder

The Maintenance Minder™ system calculates the engine's tune-up schedule based on driving conditions (tracked by the PCM). When determining proper maintenance intervals, the system minimizes owner guesswork about whether the vehicle is being operated in standard or severe conditions. The CR-Z's Maintenance Minder system information appears in the Multi- Information Display (MID) and indicates when to change the oil, oil filter (every other oil change), air cleaner, transmission fluid, spark plugs, engine coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires. A tune-up is not required until about 100,000 miles. (Note: 100K+/- Miles No Scheduled Tune-ups may vary with driving conditions. Does not apply to fluid and filter changes. Exact mileage is determined by actual driving conditions. The owner's manual contains full details.) Long-life fluids have been used for reduced environmental impact (fluid disposal) and reduced maintenance costs. As a result, engine coolant changes are needed about every 10 years or approximately 100,000 miles, and engine oil changes are required around 7,500 miles under normal driving conditions, or annually if fewer miles are driven per year.

Two transmissions are offered with the CR-Z, a standard six-speed manual and a continuously variable automatic transmission. Both are designed to optimize the power transfer from CR-Z's low-end torque and allow for smooth acceleration.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)

The available automatic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) offers smooth and predictable transitions and excellent low-end acceleration and low-RPM cruising. By helping the engine and IMA motor stay in their most efficient operating range, the CVT provides an operating efficiency benefit superior to that of a conventional 5-speed automatic transmission and it allows for greater efficiency during regenerative braking by smoothing deceleration. The use of a low gear ratio results in quick-reacting initial acceleration performance. The start clutch control is designed to take full advantage of the features of the IMA system, engaging at low RPM to enhance initial acceleration and contribute to fuel efficiency.

The shift lever has four positions; P: PARK, R: REVERSE, N: NEUTRAL, and D: DRIVE. An additional Sport mode is available and can be activated via a button to the left of the steering wheel. Sport mode activates unique programming for the paddle shifters and provides a 1st through 7th speed ratios. When the engine's redline is reached while in manual mode, the CR-Z will automatically shift to the next gear ratio. It will also shift down to an appropriate lower gear ratio if necessary.

The CVT is an electronically controlled automatic transmission with the drive and driven pulleys, and a steel belt. It provides "stepless" forward speeds and one in reverse. Each pulley consists of a movable face and a fixed face, and the effective pulley ratio changes with engine speed. The drive pulley and the driven pulley are linked by the steel belt.

To achieve a low pulley ratio, high hydraulic pressure works on the movable face of the driven pulley and reduces the effective diameter of the drive pulley, and a lower hydraulic pressure works on the movable face of the drive pulley to eliminate the potential for steel belt slippage.

To achieve a high pulley ratio, high hydraulic pressure works on the movable face of the drive pulley and reduces the effective diameter of the driven pulley, and low hydraulic pressure works on the movable face of the driven pulley to eliminate the potential for steel belt slippage.

Six-Speed Manual Transmission

A manual gearbox was essential and Honda engineers determined that a 6- speed was the optimum gearbox for both fuel economy and sporty driving. As a parallel hybrid system it is relatively easy to adapt Honda's IMA system to work with a variety of hardware, and as demonstrated by the 2000 Insight, a manual gearbox can work well with the right hybrid technology. The manual gearbox gives the CR-Z a very different character from existing hybrid models. The gearbox has been developed with the enthusiastic driver in mind, with a short shift throw (45 mm) and a firm but light action that encourages the driver to change gears regularly. Tolerances of the shift mechanism components have been optimized to reduce free play in the mechanism. The detent is a component that controls the movement of the shift lever and this area was the subject of a great deal of attention to achieve a positive click with each gear change. Even with a six-speed gearbox and sporty shift action, it is not essential to continuously work the CR-Z's gearbox. The ample low-end torque of the engine and IMA system means in-gear flexibility is also impressive.
(See interior section for shift lever ergonomics.)

A Shift Indicator Light (SIL) system uses arrows on the instrument panel meter cluster that suggests to the driver when to shift up or down for efficient driving. The system is designed to help the driver control the engine speed in a range where it has best efficiency for each driving situation. The SIL also interacts with the Eco Assist ambient meter around the tachometer. When fuel economy decreases, the SIL gives an indication to shift gears and the ambient meter transitions from green to the intermediate blue-green color.

If the gear change is carried out within an appropriate time, then the ambient meter will change back to green. If the gear change does not occur, then the ambient meter will change to blue. The driver can follow the guidance of the ambient meter or the SIL to achieve optimal fuel economy.

To provide driving enthusiasts with exceptional control and feel, the six-speed manual transmission's 4.11 final-drive gear ratio maximizes the engine's torque for quicker acceleration. By employing large-capacity synchronizers (double brass cone on 2nd gear; and a single carbon cone on 3rd gear), the six-speed manual transmission offers an exceptionally light shift effort for the driver. Further refining the transmission's sporty, high-quality feel is a short-stroke clutch pedal for quicker shifting, a hydraulic damper integrated with the clutch master cylinder for reduced clutch vibration, and an innovative clutch-friction material for improved clutch engagement feel.

Styling Concept for an Advanced Cockpit Design

The production version of the CR-Z's interior is derived from the CR-Z Concept shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. Fashioned around the concept of "premium small," the interior offers an exciting coupe style. Primary objectives were to provide a high-quality look and feel consistent with a premium vehicle, create generous amounts of useful space relative to its compact exterior size, and illustrate the CR-Z's fun-to-drive experience on the inside.

Instrument Panel, Center Stack and Glove Box

The instrument panel features a deeply sculpted design to create the sensation of depth and expansiveness. A variety of design techniques were used to enhance the feeling of width and space to express a premium, high-tech and sporty quality. The inset sculpting of the instrument panel brings all of the controls and storage areas closer to the driver. Intuitively grouped controls for the audio, climate, 3-mode drive system buttons and available navigation system are designed to operate with solidity and precision. A prominent three-dimensional tachometer dominates the instrument meter cluster and houses a 3-digit digital speedometer, flanked on either side by specialized hybrid meters and conventional readouts for fuel, and other important vehicle information.

A thoughtfully engineered center stack provides convenient storage areas for mobile phones and digital media devices, along with USB connectivity, an auxiliary audio input jack and a 12V DC power outlet. An upper instrument panel storage area provides sufficient space for a pair of sunglasses and features a damped lid for smooth operation and a rubber mat to prevent noise. A center lower instrument panel storage area (just below the radio) includes a lid and is designed to hold digital media devices. The interior of the storage area includes a USB interface. The 12V DC power outlet and the auxiliary audio input jack on navigation-equipped models are located just below the lid. Models with a conventional radio have an auxiliary audio input jack on the audio system faceplate. Plugging a portable audio device into the aux-in jack automatically sets the volume at a preset level; when the device is unplugged, the volume resets to its previous level.

A conventional glove box is located in front of the passenger and opens smoothly with help from a damper and features an HVAC vent opening and a dedicated pen holder. The HVAC opening will divert airflow from the air conditioning system and is large enough to accommodate a 16- ounce bottle of water along with other small items.

The black upper part of the instrument panel is constructed of a single layer of precision-textured, soft-feel composite material. Similar to the same process for making steering wheels, this is the first instrument panel from Honda constructed by using Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) technology in place of the more-conventional design that uses a texture layer over a substrate layer. The RIM technology can better reproduce fine details and follow designs with sharper bends. The passenger airbag lid is a seamless design with no visible parting line. The lower portion of the instrument panel (texture layer over substrate) has a three-dimensional texture in a matte gray color.

The CR-Z EX is equipped with high quality metal-coated composite trim pieces on the center stack and the door grips. A first for Honda in interior applications, the specially constructed high-gloss film is made from evaporated metal, resulting in an authentic reflective appearance and a high-quality feel. The metal evaporative coating consists of an adhesion layer, an actual evaporated-metal layer and a clear-coat layer that is applied to the parts under vacuum. The evaporative metal coating can follow more complex contours compared to metal parts and it offers greater durability compared to ordinary film coatings. Textured aluminum pedals on the CR-Z EX add to the polished look and feel of the interior.

Meter Cluster

The instrument meter cluster incorporates a multitude of conventional and hybrid-specific meters. The most prominent feature is a 3-dimensional meter containing an illumination ring that transitions color from green to blue depending on the efficient style of driving, or red if the CR-Z is in Sport mode. Green conveys efficient driving, blue conveys less efficient driving. A large, three-digit digital speedometer resides inside the tachometer ring. The area to the left of the tachometer contains a battery state-of-charge meter and IMA assist/charge meter that shows whether the electric motor is providing electric power assist or regenerative braking. The area to the right of the tachometer contains readouts for fuel level and a Multi-Information Display (MID). Manual transmission models include shift-up and shift-down arrow indicators that suggest shift points for an efficient driving style.

Eco Assist

The CR-Z offers exceptional fuel economy, and the Eco Assist™ guidance function helps drivers get improved efficient performance from the Integrated Motor Assist system. The system guides drivers in accelerating and braking in ways that consume less fuel, and in taking better advantage of regenerative braking. Using these tools, the driver can achieve improved fuel economy performance.

The primary Eco Assist feedback tool the CR-Z provides to the driver is the glowing ring inside the tachometer. Fuel-saving activities such as smooth acceleration and braking make the meter inner ring glow green. Aggressive starts and stops that consume extra fuel make the meter glow blue. By observing the meter ring color, changing driving practices, and seeking to achieve a consistently green color, drivers can develop driving habits that typically enhance fuel economy.

Multi-Information Display (MID)

The MID contains six sub-displays that are accessible by pressing the "i" information button on the steering wheel or in the meter cluster. The information categories include:

  • IMA system power flow indicator
  • Eco Guide and Eco Scoring
  • Digital odometer and digital trip meters (2)
  • Digital fuel-mileage indicators
  • Average fuel economy, average speed and elapsed time indicators
  • Miles-to-empty indicator
  • Maintenance Minder™ system messages
  • Exterior temperature indicator

Eco Guide and Eco Scoring

Similar to the Honda Insight, the CR-Z offers an Eco Guide and Eco Scoring feature to help drivers track progress of efficient driving styles. The Eco Guide provides a sliding bar graph for real-time fuel economy feedback. The Eco Guide, located within the MID, use a shorter bar to the right to indicate a more-efficient acceleration style. A shorter bar to the left indicates a more efficient braking style.

The Eco Scoring function rates economical driving performance by the previous two trips and the current trip using graphical representations of plant leaves (accessible while driving). When the ignition switch is turned off, the leaves in the top line of the MID show the Eco Score for the just completed driving cycle (startup to shutdown). The leaves in the bottom line indicate the leaves earned for the lifetime of the vehicle and encourages drivers to take an interest in developing fuel-efficient driving habits over the long term.

Integrated Motor Assist Operation Schematic

The Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) schematic shows flow of energy from the engine and/or the IMA battery pack. A diagram of the vehicle receives positive energy flow from the gasoline pump graphic when the engine is operating and it receives positive or negative energy flow from the battery icon. Positive or negative energy flow from the battery represents either IMA power assist or IMA regenerative braking.

Steering Wheel

The three-spoke steering wheel on the CR-Z (leather wrapped on the CR-Z EX) is intended to create a sporty feeling. Steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise-control buttons include Mode, Volume and Channel, plus Cruise, Cancel, Set/Decelerate and Resume/Accelerate. CR-Z EX models add buttons for the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® telephone interface. In CR-Z EX models equipped with the navigation system, the steering wheel also provides buttons for the navigation voice-control activation. The tilt-and-telescope range for the steering column, along with seat height adjustment range, is designed to enhance the comfort of an extensive variety of driver sizes. CR-Z models equipped with the continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) provide two paddle shifters behind the steering wheel for manual control of the CVT ratios.

Manual Transmission Shifter Design and Geometry

Honda manual transmissions are known for their short, direct and precise shifts. The CR-Z shifter location was configured for comfortable, sporty operation that falls naturally to the hand by optimizing the vertical and horizontal distances from the driver's shoulder with the stroke of the shifter. Designed to convey the look and feel of premium quality, the CR-Z EX is equipped with a leather-wrapped aluminum shift knob that has blueengraved gear positions. The blue emphasizes the hybrid aspect of the powertrain.

Versatile Cargo Area and Rear Cargo Console

The cargo area of the CR-Z provides up to 25.1 cubic feet of luggage capacity. A rear cargo console resides behind the front seats and provides a hidden storage area with a two-zone tray built into the floor. The area is ideal for items like a duffle bag, a laptop computer, or similar items. When closed, the rear cover creates a flat floor with a length of 50.3 inches (1280 mm) and a width of 38.9 inches (990 mm). The cover of the rear cargo console is hinged between the wheel wells and uses a damper for smooth movement. When the cargo cover is in the up position, it acts as a separator that locks into place and divides the cargo area between the rear wheel wells to create a front and rear cargo zone. When opened, the rear cargo zone length measures 30.3 inches (770 mm) with an approximate cargo volume of 10.1 cubic feet. An additional small storage area is located under the rear cargo floor above the spare tire, amounting to 0.6 cubic feet (2.0 liters). The latch at the center of the rear cargo cover allows the driver or passenger to easily reach back and open or close the cover for convenient access to items.

Retractable Cargo Area Cover

A removable and retractable cargo area cover is standard equipment. The cross bar spans the rear wheel wells and the spring-loaded retractable cover connects to the back of the rear cargo area. The cover can retract into the crossbar. The crossbar can be removed and stored on the floor when not in use.

Automatic Climate Control

The CR-Z is equipped with a highefficiency automatic climate control system as standard equipment. Operated by two large easy-to-use dials, the system has an "Automatic" mode that varies fan power, air distribution and controls the temperature inside the vehicle according to sensor readings inside and outside the vehicle. The climate control integrates with the IMA hybrid system to enhance economical operation when the air conditioner is in use during idlestop mode and when in Econ mode.

Silver Mesh Sport Seats

The silver mesh sport seats of the CR-Z offer supportive seat construction consistent with the needs of an enthusiast driver. An innovative active head restraint system enhances the seat's ability to minimize the likelihood of a neck injury in the event of a rear collision. Both front seats manually recline and move forward and back. The driver's seat features a manual height adjustment control with two inches total of up and down travel. A ratchet-style lever on the left side of the seat base adjusts the seat up or down in increments. High-strength steel comprises the majority of the seats' internal framework. Composite components are used in the base and the seatback to minimize weight and proactively influence seat cushion feedback. The foam cushions employ various densities in the bolsters compared to other areas in the seat to provide an optimal level of comfort (softness) and support (firmness) for the CR-Z. To accommodate drivers of different sizes and body shapes, the seats' side bolsters are formed from a separate piece and integrate a strategic support wire to increase stiffness as appropriate for larger people or smaller people. Larger persons are held in place by the outer portion of the side support. Smaller persons receive the benefit of the strategic support wire working on the inner portion of the bolster for excellent lateral support.

Audio System

The CR-Z features a 6-speaker, 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with an auxiliary input jack for connection to a portable audio player, and all models include a USB audio interface6 for connecting an iPod7 or other compatible audio device. Other audio features include speedsensitive volume control, which automatically adjusts the volume based on vehicle speed, and CD/MP3 text readout. The radio data system shows supplemental programming information from participating radio stations while also offering search-by-genre capability (not available on the CR-Z EX with navigation).

Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™8 is available on the CR-Z EX model and features a 6.5-inch display that opens and closes for access to the internal CD player slot, a USB audio interface, and a digital audio card reader that can play MP3 and WMA files from SD, CompactFlash™, and Flash ATA memory cards (PCM adapter required for all cards). The navigation system features more than 7 million points of interest and integrates the audio system. The voice recognition feature is capable of recognizing and inputting numbers, street names and cities, in addition to more than 600 commands.

6 The USB Audio Interface is used for direct connection to and control of some current digital audio players and other USB devices that contain MP3, WMA or AAC music files. Some USB devices with security software and digital rights-protected files may not work. Please see your Honda dealer for details.
7 iPod is a registered trademark of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. iPod not included. Compatible devices include 5th-generation iPods and later and iPod Nano.
8 The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ is available on the CR-Z EX model in the United States, except Alaska. Please see the navigation system manual for details.

Honda navigation systems have long been recognized for their simple, intuitive operation and extensive on-board database. When navigating freeways, a split screen design enhances onscreen information with a "map view" and "3-D" route visualization of freeways simultaneouslywhich helps make navigation information easier to understand. The system is integrated with the car's audio system, so driving instructions can be heard over the speaker system, and the voice recognition feature adds hands-free control to the navigation system.

The Honda Satellite-Linked DVD Navigation System uses Global Positioning Satellites (GPS) in combination with detailed information from the vehicle's DVD-based mapping system to pinpoint the vehicle's location and to provide a host of useful mapping and route guidance features. The antenna can utilize up to 12 satellites from a network of 24 global positioning satellites. If the antenna is obstructed by a tunnel, a parking garage or a tall building, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle so that the map information remains current and reliable. The vehicle clock is independently controlled by GPS data, so when time zones are crossed while driving, the clock will automatically set itself to the current time.

Turn-by-turn voice guidance is user selectable in either male or female voice and can be turned off at any time. Destination memory recalls current trip addresses and previous destinations; and calendar and calculator with English to metric number converter is standard.

The navigation system can be controlled by the driver through either the voice recognition feature, the touch screen display, or by the joystick on the instrument panel. The voice recognition feature works when the "talk" button, located on the steering wheel, is depressed. When spoken to, the system recognizes commands such as "find nearest gas station," or "find nearest ATM" and can also recognize street names.

The 6.5-inch LCD display is a touch screen (TFT, resistive film) that allows the driver or front passenger to choose menu options or spell out a word (i.e. address, business name, place, etc.) through a touch-sensitive keypad. The keypad can be set to alphabetical or a QWERTY typewriter-style layout. Alternatively, the joystick can be used to highlight menu options or to highlight specific letters on the keypad to complete a word. A matte finish is used on the display to reduce glare and smudging. When disc loading is selected for the CD player, the motorized screen tilts down to allow access to the CD loader located behind the screen.

For data storage, the system uses a single DVD (located below CD player) that contains information for the entire United States. Future updates to the navigation system can be made by installing an updated DVD (available on-line or by calling a toll free number provided in the owner's manual).

Bluetooth HandsFreeLink

Standard on the CR-Z EX, the Bluetooth®9 HandsFreeLink® hands-free phone interface is designed to work with many Bluetooth® enabled mobile phones. The system uses radio frequencies to connect the driver's mobile phone to the audio system in the vehicle. This allows the driver to make or answer mobile-phone calls without taking his or her hands from the steering wheel. The system is compatible with Bluetooth enabled mobile phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP).

Bluetooth HandsFreeLink is designed for easy use. After the driver completes a one-time "pairing" process to link the mobile phone with the vehicle, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink can communicate wirelessly and securely with the driver's mobile phone when the phone is within about 30 feet of the car. Once the driver enters the car, he or she simply stores the phone in a pocket, briefcase, purse or a storage bin inside the vehicle's cabin and the call transfers through the wireless telephone interface. Certain compatible mobile phones can also transfer the cellular phonebook into the navigation system through the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink system. After the cellular phonebook is transferred into the navigation system, calls can be made by making selections from the registered phonebook on the information screen in the navigation system.

Operational features include:

  • Telephone ring tone plays over the audio system for incoming calls
  • Phone numbers of incoming calls are displayed on the Multi-Information Display
  • Pressing the steering wheel-mounted "answer" button connects the call and mutes the audio system
  • Caller is heard through the audio-system speakers
  • One overhead microphone picks up the driver's voice clearly while minimizing background noise and echoing
  • To make a call hands free, the driver first activates the system using the steering wheelmounted controls, then "dials" the number by voice
  • Numbers with voice tags may be stored in the system's memory phonebook
  • Up to six different compatible mobile phones can be paired with the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink system at one time

Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) Body Structure

The 2011 CR-Z features Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure technology that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. The ACE design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash. Additionally, ACE helps minimize the potential for under-ride or over-ride situations that can happen during head-on or offset frontal impacts with a significantly larger or smaller vehicle.

Unlike most conventional designs that direct frontal crash energy only to the lower load-bearing structures in the front end, the ACE system actively channels frontal crash energy to both upper and lower structural elements, including the floor frame rails, side sills and A-pillars. By creating specifically engineered "pathways" that help distribute these frontal impact forces through a greater percentage of the vehicle's total structure, the ACE system can more effectively route them around and away from the passenger compartment to help limit cabin deformation and further improve occupant protection. Integral to the ACE concept is its unique front polygonal main design structure.

Pedestrian Injury Mitigation Design

Structures in the front of the 2011 CR-Z are designed to help absorb energy in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Research by Honda shows that certain design features can dramatically improve a pedestrian's chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle.

Key pedestrian injury mitigation features:

  • Hood is designed to deform if contact is made with either an adult or a child pedestrian
  • Sufficient clearance exists between the hood and hard engine parts
  • Windshield base has a unique section structure for efficient impact energy absorption
  • Energy-absorbing fender mounts and supports
  • Deformable hood hinge

Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®)

Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) is an electronic stability control system that works in conjunction with the drive-by-wire throttle and 4-channel ABS systems to enhance controllability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking, cornering or when the driver makes a sudden maneuver. VSA functions by applying brake force to one or more wheels independently while also managing the throttle, ignition and fuel systems to help the vehicle maintain the driver's intended path of travel.

The VSA system constantly analyzes data from six sensors that monitor wheel and vehicle speed, steering input, lateral G forces and yaw rate. It compares the driver's control inputs with the vehicle's actual response. Whenever the actual response falls outside of a predetermined acceptable range, VSA intervenes with a corrective action.

For instance, if VSA detects an oversteer condition, the system may apply braking force to the outside front and rear wheels to counteract the unintended yawing effect. In the event of understeer, VSA may apply braking to the inside rear wheel while reducing engine power to help return the car to its intended course. VSA also provides a limited-slip differential effect for the front wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction.

VSA is calibrated to function in a near-transparent manner, and in many cases a driver will not even be aware of its operation. However, anytime the system is enhancing vehicle stability, an indicator light flashes in the instrument cluster. While the driver can deactivate the VSA stability enhancement and traction-control functions via a switch on the instrument panel, ABS remains fully operational at all times.

Brake Assist

A significant VSA function on the 2011 CR-Z is recognizing emergency braking situations and almost instantly applying added braking force. This brake assist feature is controlled by a logic in the system that determines when the pedal stroke and speed exceed a typical range - as they would in a panic stop. At that point, the ABS modulator pump increases braking pressure while the pedal is still being pressed to ensure maximum stopping force, an action that helps shorten braking distance as much as possible.

4-Channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution

The CR-Z is fitted with 4-wheel disc brakes that have vented front rotors and solid rear rotors. (Please see Chassis section for more information.) The ABS system also incorporates Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) circuitry that automatically proportions force based on the vehicle's weight distribution.

Dual-Stage, Multiple-Threshold Front Airbags

Both the driver and passenger are protected by advanced front airbags (SRS) that incorporate dual-stage and multiple-threshold activation technology. One or both of these airbags will be deployed only in the event of a sufficient frontal impact. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seatbelt usage and other factors.

Like other Honda vehicles, the driver's front airbag is located in the steering wheel while the passenger airbag is located on the top of the dashboard. When deployed, the passenger airbag inflates upward and then rearward to maximize its protective potential while reducing the likelihood of injuries being caused by the activation process itself.

Side Curtain Airbags

Standard side curtain airbags provide enhanced head protection for the driver and passenger in all CR-Z models. The side curtain airbag system is designed to rapidly deploy in the event of a side collision to help protect the heads and necks of occupants. The large airbag covers almost the entire side window area, utilizing a low temperature, compressed gas inflator to inflate. Five sensors are used to detect side collisions and determine optimum timing for airbag deployment.

Driver and Passenger Side Airbags with Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS)

Driver's and passenger's side airbags mounted in the outboard area of each seatback are designed to provide pelvis and thorax protection in the event of a severe side impact. In addition, the passenger's seat is equipped with Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), an innovative system designed to deactivate the side airbag if a small child (or small-stature adult) leans into the side airbag deployment path. When the passenger returns to an upright seating position, the side airbag reactivates so it can deploy to help protect the occupant in a side impact. This unique system utilizes weight sensors and sensors in the passenger seatback to determine the height and position of the occupant, and determine if it is safe to deploy the side airbag.

Active Head Restraints

Both of the CR-Z's front seats are fitted with an innovative active head restraint designed to help reduce the likelihood of neck injuries in the event of a rear impact. The head restraint is mechanically connected to a lumbar plate located inside of the seatback via special links. If a rear impact takes place, the seat is accelerated against the occupant's body. That action causes the head restraint to move forward in a carefully prescribed arc. The effect of this motion helps reduce forces that otherwise might impact the neck and musculature during a collision.

Seatbelts with Automatic Tensioners and Load Limiters

The seatbelts are equipped with automatic tensioners and load limiters to help minimize injury potential in a sufficient frontal collision. When a sufficient impact occurs, the automatic tensioner tightens the seatbelt (shoulder) to help hold the seat occupant firmly in position. The load limiter then can provide a small amount of controlled seatbelt slack shortly after the automatic tensioner is activated to limit the peak restraining forces applied to the torso, reducing the potential for injury.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)

The CR-Z is fitted with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that alerts a driver whenever the air pressure in one or more of the vehicle's tires is significantly below the recommended level. Using four sensors (one in each tire) TPMS monitors and transmits information on tire air pressure to the ECU. When the pressure in one or more tires drops to a potentially critical level, it causes a low tire pressure indicator (located in the instrument cluster) to illuminate.

Honda's Safety R&D Facilities

Honda operates two of the world's most sophisticated crash test laboratories for the development of improved safety designs and technologies. The Tochigi facility in Japan is the world's first indoor multi-directional car-to-car crash testing facility and plays a critical role in the development of enhanced designs for occupant and pedestrian safety and vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility. Honda R&D America's Raymond, Ohio development center performs advanced testing on all North American-developed models. The facility features the world's first pitching test sled, which aids efficiency by enabling economical and speedy crash-test simulations with certain interior safety components, such as seats and seatbelts, prior to conducting a crash test with an actual vehicle. It also features one of the world's highest-resolution impact barriers, which enables precise measurement of the distribution of impact load forces on a vehicle.
