Engine Architecture and Features

Cylinder Block and Crank
With its 60-degree V-angle, the Pilot's V-6 engine is inherently smooth and has compact overall dimensions that allow efficient packaging within the vehicle. The V-6 has a die-cast lightweight aluminum alloy block with cast-in-place iron cylinder liners. Made with a centrifugal spin-casting process, the thin-wall liners are high in strength and low in porosity. The block incorporates a deep-skirt design with four bolts per bearing cap for rigid crankshaft support and minimized noise and vibration. The 3.5-liter V-6 uses a high-tensile strength steel crankshaft for minimum weight.

A cooling control spacer positioned in the water jacket surrounding the cylinders helps control warm-up and operating cylinder liner temperatures to reduce friction. Plateau honing of the cylinder lining further reduces friction between the piston skirts and the cylinder walls by creating an ultra-smooth surface. This two-stage machining process uses two grinding processes instead of the more conventional single-stage honing process. Plateau honing also enhances the long-term wear characteristics of the engine.

Pistons/Connecting Rods
Designed with "cavity-shaped" crowns, the 2016 Pilot's pistons help maintain stable combustion and contribute to stratified-charge combustion. Ion-plated piston rings help reduce friction for greater operating efficiency. Heavy-duty steel connecting rods are forged in one piece and then "crack separated" to create a lighter and stronger rod with an optimally fitted bearing cap.

Cylinder Head and Valvetrain
Like other Honda V-6 powerplants, the Pilot engine's 4-valve cylinder heads are a single-overhead-camshaft design, with the cams driven by the crankshaft via an automatically tensioned toothed belt. Made of low-pressure cast, low-porosity aluminum, each cylinder head incorporates a "tumble port" design that improves combustion efficiency by creating a more homogeneous fuel-air mixture. An integrated exhaust manifold cast into each cylinder head reduces parts count, saves weight, improves flow and optimizes the location of the close-coupled catalyst on each cylinder bank.

i-VTEC with 2-Stage Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®)
The Pilot's V-6 engine combines Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) with Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (i-VTEC), which changes the lift profile, timing and lift duration of the intake valves. A switching mechanism allows each cylinder to operate with low-rpm valve lift and duration or high-rpm lift and duration. While operating in three-cylinder mode, the rear cylinder bank's valve gear closes all intake and exhaust valves to minimize pumping losses.

The "intelligent" portion of the system is its ability to vary valve operation based on the driving situation and engine rpm. At low rpm, the i-VTEC intake valve timing and lift are optimized (low lift, short duration) for increased torque, which allows a wide range of 3-cylinder operation. As engine rpm builds past 5,350 rpm, the i-VTEC system transitions to a high-lift, long-duration intake cam profile for superior high-rpm engine power.

VCM Operation
To help improve the fuel efficiency of the Pilot engine, a new variation of Honda's Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) is used. The i-VTEC system combines with Active Control engine Mounts (ACM) to allow the VCM system to operate with just three cylinders in a wide range of situations to maximize fuel efficiency and lower emissions. When greater power is needed, the system switches seamlessly to 6-cylinder operation.

During startup, aggressive acceleration, or steep ascents – any time high power output is required – the engine operates on all six cylinders. During moderate-speed cruising and at low or moderate engine loads, the system operates just the front bank of three cylinders.

The VCM system can tailor the working displacement of the engine to match the driving requirements from moment to moment. Since the system automatically closes both the intake and exhaust valves of the cylinders that are not used, pumping losses associated with intake and exhaust are eliminated and fuel efficiency gets a further boost. The system combines maximum performance and maximum fuel efficiency – two characteristics that don't typically coexist in conventional engines.

VCM deactivates specific cylinders by using the i-VTEC (intelligent Variable Valve-Timing and Lift Electronic Control) system to close the intake and exhaust valves while the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) simultaneously cuts fuel to those cylinders. The spark plugs continue to fire in inactive cylinders to minimize plug temperature loss and prevent fouling induced from incomplete combustion during cylinder re-activation.

The system is electronically controlled, and uses special integrated spool valves in the cylinder heads. Based on commands from the system's Electronic Control Unit, the spool valves selectively direct oil pressure to the rocker arms for specific cylinders. This oil pressure in turn drives synchronizing pistons that connect and disconnect the rocker arms.

The VCM system monitors throttle position, vehicle speed, engine speed, automatic-transmission gear selection and other factors to determine the correct cylinder activation scheme for the operating conditions. In addition, the system determines whether engine oil pressure is suitable for VCM switching and whether catalytic-converter temperature will remain in the proper range. To further smooth the activating or deactivating cylinders, the system adjusts ignition timing and throttle position and turns the torque converter lock-up on and off. As a result, the transition between three and six cylinder modes is effectively unnoticeable to the driver.

Drive-by-Wire Throttle System
The Pilot's Drive-by-Wire throttle system replaces a conventional throttle cable with smart electronics that "connect" the accelerator pedal to a throttle valve inside the throttle-body. The result is less under-hood clutter and lower weight, as well as quicker and more accurate throttle actuation. Plus, a specially programmed "gain" rate between the throttle pedal and engine offers improved drivability and optimized engine response to suit specific driving conditions.

Honda's Drive-by-Wire throttle system establishes the current driving conditions by monitoring throttle pedal position, throttle valve position, engine speed (rpm) and road speed. This information is used to define the throttle control sensitivity that gives the Pilot's throttle pedal a predictable and responsive feel that meets driver expectations.

Direct Injection System
The direct-injection system enables increased torque across the engine's full operating range along with higher fuel efficiency. The system features a compact, high-pressure, direct-injection pump that allows both high fuel flow and pulsation suppression, while variable pressure control optimizes injector operation. A multi-hole injector delivers fuel directly into each cylinder (not to the intake port, as in conventional port fuel injection designs), allowing for more efficient combustion.

The multi-hole injectors can create the ideal stoichiometric fuel/air mixture in the cylinders for good emissions control. Theoretically, a stoichiometric mixture has just enough air to completely burn the available fuel. Based on the operating condition s, the direct-injection system alters its function for best performance. Upon cold engine startup, fuel is injected into the cylinders on the compression stroke. This creates a weak stratified charge effect that improves engine start-up and reduces exhaust emissions before a normal operating temperature is reached.

Once the engine is fully warmed up, for maximum power and fuel efficiency fuel is injected during the intake stroke. This helps create a more homogeneous fuel/air mix in the cylinder that is aided by the high-tumble intake port design. This improves volumetric efficiency, and the cooling effect of the incoming fuel improves anti-knock performance.

Direct Ignition and Detonation/Knock Control
The Pilot's Electronic Control Unit (ECU) monitors engine functions to determine the best ignition spark timing. Two engine block-mounted acoustic detonation/knock sensors "listen" to the engine, and based on this input, the ECU can retard the ignition timing to prevent potentially damaging detonation. The 3.5-liter V-6 has an ignition coil unit for each cylinder that is positioned within each spark plug's access bore.

Idle-Stop System
To help improve fuel efficiency, the Pilot Touring and Elite are equipped with Idle-Stop capability. When the system is enabled by the driver and certain operating conditions are met, the Idle-Stop system will automatically shut off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver releases the brake pedal after a stop.

The system is engineered to operate smoothly and seamlessly. When stopped, a special cold storage evaporator in the air conditioning system helps maintain a comfortable cabin temperature even in warm weather. The Pilot's active engine mounts help smooth the restart. Idle-Stop operation is fully integrated into the operation of the Pilot's Brake Hold system and its available Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system.

The Idle-Stop feature can be turned on/off via a button on the center console, located at the bottom of the electronic gear selector array. The system will automatically turn itself off in certain circumstances, including:

  • If the driver's seatbelt is not fastened
  • If the engine coolant and/or transmission fluid temperature is too high or low
  • If the vehicle comes to a stop again before vehicle speed reaches 3 mph
  • If the transmission is in a position other than "D"
  • If the battery state of charge is low, or the battery temperature is below 14°F
  • If the climate control system is on and the outside temperature is below -4°F
  • If the rear HVAC fan is set to maximum speed

Close-Coupled Catalysts and High-Flow Exhaust System
The exhaust manifolds of the 3.5-liter V-6 are cast directly into the aluminum cylinder heads to reduce weight, decrease parts count, and create more under-hood space. The result of this casting design is that the two primary catalytic converters are positioned much closer to the combustion chambers, enabling extremely rapid converter "light-off" after engine start. A significant weight savings is realized by eliminating traditional exhaust manifolds. Downstream of the close-coupled catalytic converters, a hydroformed 2-into-1 collector pipe carries exhaust gases to a secondary, underfloor catalytic converter.

Emissions Control
The 2016 Pilot 3.5-liter V-6 engine meets the tough EPA Tier 2/Bin 5 and CARB LEV II ULEV emissions standards, and is certified to this level of emissions performance for 120,000 miles. A number of advanced technologies are factors in the emissions performance. The unique cylinder head-mounted close-coupled catalytic converters light off more quickly after engine start up, and a 32-bit RISC microprocessor within the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) boosts computing power to improve the precision of spark and fuel delivery.

The engine features Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI) that continually adjusts the fuel delivery to yield the best combination of power, low fuel consumption and low emissions. Multiple sensors constantly monitor critical engine operating parameters such as intake air temperature, ambient air pressure, throttle position, intake airflow volume, intake manifold pressure, coolant temperature, exhaust-to-air ratios, as well as the position of the crankshaft and the camshafts.

To further improve emissions compliance, the 3.5-liter V-6 makes use of an after-catalytic-converter exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system that allows cleaner, cooler EGR gas to be fed back into the intake system. An EGR system, especially one that delivers a cleaner, cooler charge, reduces pumping loss for better fuel efficiency.

Noise and Vibration Control
With its 60-degree V-angle and compact, rigid and lightweight die-cast aluminum cylinder block assembly, the 3.5-liter V-6 powerplant is exceptionally smooth during operation. Other factors that help reduce engine noise and vibration are a rigid forged-steel crankshaft, die-cast accessory mounts, and a stiff cast-aluminum oil pan that reduces cylinder block flex.

Active Control Engine Mounts
A powerful 28-volt Active Control Engine Mount system (ACM) is used to minimize the effects of engine vibration as the VCM system switches cylinders on and off. The 28-volt ACM is a key factor in the VCM's broad range of operation in the new Pilot. Sensors alert the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to direct ACM actuators positioned at the front and rear of the engine to cancel engine vibration using a reverse-phase motion. See the Interior section for more information.

100,000+/- Mile Tune-up Intervals
The Pilot's 3.5-liter V-6 requires no scheduled maintenance for 100,000+/- miles or more, other than periodic inspections and normal fluid and filter replacements. The first tune-up includes water pump inspection, valve adjustment, replacement of the camshaft timing belt, and the installation of new spark plugs.

Battery Management System
The Battery Management System (BMS) is designed to increase the overall service life of the battery, reduce the chance of a dead battery and help improve fuel efficiency. Should the owner accidentally leave the headlights on or fail to fully close a door causing an interior light to remain on, the BMS will automatically terminate power delivery after a set period of time to prevent the battery from being drained of power. As a result of the discharge protection afforded by the BMS, the battery should always have enough reserve capacity left to start the engine.

The Pilot engine makes use of a powerful 130-amp alternator that charges in two different ranges— a low 12-volt range and a high 14-volt range. By controlling the alternator charge voltage range, BMS works to keep the battery in a specific charge range, which can extend the service life of the battery by more than 25 percent. With BMS keeping the battery in a specific charge range, the alternator can run more often in the low range, which generates less drag on the engine resulting in improved fuel efficiency. Application of numerous electrical power reducing items (such as the use of efficient LED lighting and a special humidity control system that has an automatic air conditioning "off" function) allows the BMS to operate the alternator even more frequently in the more efficient low charge mode

Maintenance Minder™ System
To eliminate unnecessary service stops while ensuring that the vehicle is properly maintained, the Pilot has a Maintenance Minder™ system that continually monitors the vehicle's operating condition. When maintenance is required,  the driver is alerted via a message on the Multi-Information Display (MID).

The Maintenance Minder™ system monitors operating conditions such as oil and coolant temperature along with engine speed to determine the proper service intervals. Depending on operating conditions, oil change intervals can be extended to a maximum of 10,000 miles, potentially sparing the owner considerable expense and inconvenience over the life of the vehicle. The owner-resettable system monitors all normal service parts and systems, including oil and filter, tire rotation, air-cleaner, automatic transmission fluid, spark plugs, timing belt, coolant, brake pads and more. To reduce the potential for driver distraction, maintenance alerts are presented on the MID only when the ignition is first turned on, not while driving.

Advanced Transmissions

The Pilot offers the choice of two different automatic transmissions: A new 6-speed automatic in LX, EX and EX-L models, and a Honda-first 9-speed automatic on Touring and Elite models.

6-Speed Automatic Transmission
Pilot LX, EX and EX-L models are equipped with a new 6-speed automatic transmission. This transmission contributes to improved acceleration and fuel efficiency, and features reduced friction and improved lockup clutch performance. The new 6-speed automatic offers excellent launch-feel, acceleration performance and fuel efficiency with a new wider gear ratio spread featuring a "lower" (numerically higher) first gear, and a "higher" (numerically lower) top gear than the 5-speed transmission it replaces.

The 6-speed transmission's straight-gate shifter is an intuitive and easy-to-use design that takes up little space in the center console.

9-Speed Automatic Transmission
2016 Pilot Touring and Elite models are equipped with a new 9-speed automatic transmission, featuring steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. The new 9-speed automatic is 66 lbs. lighter than the Pilot's standard 6-speed automatic, with more closely spaced gear ratios and 25-percent faster gear shifts and the capacity for multi-gear downshifts that enhance performance. The 9-speed automatic transmission has an even greater ratio spread than the 6-speed automatic, further enhancing acceleration performance.

The conventional console-mounted shift lever is replaced with a fully electronic, shift-by-wire gear selector. Park, Neutral, Drive and Sport are selected with the push of a button. Reverse is selected by pulling back a dedicated switch. Indicator lights near the buttons indicate the mode selected. As an added safety feature, if the vehicle is brought to a stop in Drive, the system will automatically select Park if the driver's seatbelt is unbuckled and the driver's door is opened. A steering wheel-mounted paddle shifter system lets the driver take manual control of transmission gear selection.

Automatic Modes
The 9-speed automatic transmission can be operated in two different fully automatic modes: the D (or "Drive") mode is ideal for most driving situations, and combines fuel efficiency with smooth operation and responsive power when needed; the Sport mode is for more performance-oriented driving, and features more aggressive shift mapping to keep engine rpm higher for greater acceleration and response.

When in the D mode (optimized for normal driving), the transmission incorporates an advanced Grade Logic Control System, Shift Hold Control and Cornering G Shift Control – all of which reduce unwanted shifting and gear hunting. The result is smart transmission operation that optimizes fuel efficiency and keeps the transmission in the appropriate gear for driving conditions, generating excellent performance and smooth operation.

While ascending or descending hills, Grade Logic Control alters the transmission's shift schedule to reduce shift frequency and improve speed control. The transmission ECU continually measures throttle position, vehicle speed and acceleration/deceleration to determine when the vehicle is on a hill. The shift schedule is then adjusted – during ascents to hold the transmission in lower gears to boost climbing power, and during descents to provide greater engine braking.

Shift Hold Control keeps the transmission in its current (lower) gear ratio during aggressive driving, as in the case of decelerating at a corner entry. Shift Hold Control leaves the chassis undisturbed by eliminating excess shifting and ensures that power will be immediately available (without a downshift) at the corner exit. Cornering G Shift Control monitors the speed of each rear wheel independently to determine when the Pilot is turning. When the system detects a sufficient speed differential between the rear wheels, it will suppress any unwanted upshifts. This prevents the transmission from upshifting during a corner, which could upset the chassis balance thus requiring downshifting again at the corner exit when the throttle is applied.

Temporary Manual Operation in Drive Mode
While in Drive mode, special transmission logic programming allows the use of the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. When the driver operates the paddle shifters, the transmission responds to the driver's shift command and then returns to its normal fully automatic mode if further paddle shift inputs are not made within a few seconds depending upon driving conditions. This special logic makes it easy for the driver to command a quick downshift without leaving the convenience of Drive mode.

Manual Mode
By selecting the "S" position with the shifter on the 9-speed transmission, Sport mode is engaged. This mode offers automatic operation with more aggressive shift mapping. A pull on the racing-inspired paddle shifters (mounted on the steering wheel) places the transmission in fully manual mode until another mode of operation is selected with the console-mounted shifter (e.g., switched to Drive mode). A digital display in the instrument cluster indicates which gear the transmission is in.

A double-kick-down feature lets the driver command a sporty double downshift – such as from fifth to third gear. By pulling on the left downshift paddle twice in rapid succession, the transmission will drop directly to the chosen lower gear ratio. The Drive-by-Wire throttle system also creates a "blip" of the throttle to help match gear speeds while downshifting.

To prevent harm to the powertrain when the transmission is paddle shifted by the driver (including during double-kick-down shifts), the system will inhibit potentially damaging shifts. As an added safety measure, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) can also cut off fuel to the engine to prevent over-revving. If fuel cut-off is insufficient to prevent engine over-revving, as may be possible when the vehicle is on a steep downhill, the transmission will automatically upshift to prevent damage. On downshifts, the transmission will not execute a driver command that will over-rev the engine.

For improved stop-and-go performance and to help prevent "lugging" the engine, the Sequential SportShift transmission will automatically downshift to first gear even though the transmission has been left in a higher gear, (except in second gear) as the vehicle comes to a stop. In Manual Mode, when coming to a stop in second gear, the vehicle will restart in second gear as well.

Cooperative Control
Both shift performance and smoothness are improved by cooperative control between the Drive-by-Wire throttle system and the electronically controlled, Sequential SportShift automatic transmission. The engine is throttled by the engine management system during upshifts and downshifts; thus the function of the engine and transmission can be closely choreographed for faster, smoother shifting. As a result, the peak g-forces (or "shift shock") are reduced significantly during upshifts and downshifts.

Drivetrain Architecture and Features

2-Wheel Drive
The Pilot offers standard front 2-wheel drive. With its efficient and lightweight design, the Pilot system drives the front wheels to make a significant contribution to overall fuel efficiency. Operation in Snow Mode, using the Intelligent Traction Management System, adjusts the drive-by wire map, transmission shift map and Vehicle Stability Assist™ for the best performance.

Intelligent Variable Torque Management (i-VTM4™) AWD System
The Pilot's available Intelligent Variable Torque Management (i-VTM4) all-wheel-drive system includes an all-new electronically controlled, hydraulically actuated rear differential. This entirely more capable system progressively distributes optimum torque between the front and rear axles and, for the first time ever in a Honda vehicle, dynamically distributes engine torque between the left and right rear wheels. The benefits of the system are superior all-weather handling and neutral, accurate steering under power that is unmatched by front-drive, rear-drive or conventional all-wheel-drive systems.

By rotating the outside rear wheel faster than the front wheels while cornering, the Pilot's AWD system uses torque vectoring to create a yaw moment to help turn the vehicle through the corner — reducing understeer and improving controllability. With cornering forces more evenly distributed between front and rear tires, overall cornering power is increased in all road conditions.

Vehicles with high power ratings using conventional front or rear drive systems often employ a limited-slip differential to help maintain traction when under power. By linking inside and outside drive wheels, these systems tend to resist turning and can increase understeer. Conventional AWD and 4WD systems similarly work to link the inboard and outboard wheels as well as the front and rear wheels, which can create resistance to turning. Most competing vehicles in the Pilot segment utilize an open rear differential and individual rear-wheel braking to distribute rear-wheel torque from left to right. Using dynamic, hydraulically actuated left-to-right rear wheel torque vectoring to help turn the vehicle, the Pilot's AWD system delivers more responsive, neutral and predictable handling performance while providing outstanding all-weather traction and control.

Controls and Parameters
The i-VTM4 system works in cooperation with the Pilot's Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) system and Agile Handling Assist to optimize torque distribution for superior handling and traction utilization. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) provides information on engine torque, airflow and transmission gear-ratio selection, while the VSA ECU provides wheel-speed data. The AWD ECU also monitors steering angle, steering angle rate of change, lateral G-forces, vehicle yaw rate and hydraulic clutch pressure for the right and left rear axle shafts. Drive torque is calculated from ECU information, and then the acceleration situation, wheel spin, lateral G-force, steering angle and steering angle rate-of-change are used to determine the front-to-rear torque distribution and the torque split between right and left rear wheels. This adds up to a 46-percent faster system response time. i-VTM4 operating parameters include:

  • Up to 100 percent of available torque can be transferred to the front wheels during normal cruising.
  • In hard cornering and under acceleration, up to 70 percent of available torque can be directed to the rear wheels to enhance vehicle dynamics.
  • Up to 100 percent of the torque sent to the rear axle can be applied to either the left or right rear wheel, depending on conditions.

System Layout
The Pilot AWD system is a full-time system that requires no driver interaction or monitoring, thanks to a torque-transfer unit that is bolted directly to the front-mounted transaxle. The torque-transfer unit receives torque from a helical gear that is attached to the front differential's ring gear, and a short horizontal shaft and hypoid gear set within the torque-transfer unit's case send power to the rear propeller shaft, which in turn transfers power to the rear drive unit that has a 20-percent greater torque capacity.

The Pilot's new, lightweight rear drive unit is 22 lbs. lighter than the previous generation Pilot unit and is constantly overdriven by 2.7 percent compared to 0.8 percent. The resulting overdrive effect is regulated by left- and right-side clutch packs (located in the rear differential) that independently control the power delivered to each rear wheel. The significant overdrive percentage in the new Pilot means that the torque vectoring effect is pronounced and effective even in corners with a radius of as little as 49.2 feet (15 meters). This means that torque vectoring can be felt when accelerating aggressively through a typical corner.

Hydraulically operated clutch systems mounted on either side of the hypoid gear that drives the rear axles control the amount of torque sent to each rear wheel and provide a limited-slip differential function when needed. The clutches can be controlled as a pair to alter front/rear torque split or they can be controlled independently to allow 100 percent of available rear axle torque to go to just one rear wheel. A single electric motor powers a pair of hydraulic pumps – one for each clutch pack. An Electronic Control Unit (ECU) controlled linear solenoid valve selectively sends pressure to the clutch packs, which in turn control the amount of power sent to each rear wheel. The clutch packs and their friction material are carefully designed to withstand the small amount of continuous slip between front and rear axles created by the 2.7-percent speed differential – all while delivering the durability expected of a Honda product.

Intelligent Traction Management System

The 2016 Pilot features a new push-button-operated Intelligent Traction Management System that offers four different AWD operating modes: Normal, Snow, Mud and Sand; and two FWD modes: Normal and Snow. Developed, tuned and tested at various locations in the U.S. and around the world – including Imperial Dunes "Glamis", California; Moscow, Russia; and Dubai, United Arab Emirates – the Intelligent Traction Management system allows the driver to select the operating mode that best suits the driving conditions by simply pushing a button on the vehicle's center console. System information and an animated selected mode icon is shown on the color Multi-Information Display (as shown in the second image on the following page). Based on the setting selected, the system adjusts the drive-by-wire map, transmission shift map, i-VTM4 power distribution and Vehicle Stability Assist™ for optimal performance in varying road or surface conditions.

Advanced Aerodynamics
Starting with the overall body dimensions and shape, continuing with exterior features such as the sculptured side mirrors and rear spoiler, and extending to numerous under-body details such as air strakes and covers, the new 2016 Pilot is the most aerodynamically efficient Pilot to date.

Airflow around the vehicle body and through the engine compartment has been thoroughly optimized using sophisticated Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) modeling and extensive testing and tuning in the 40-percent-scale wind tunnel at the Raymond, Ohio vehicle development center of Honda R&D Americas, Inc.

Overall, the new Pilot's comprehensive aero-overhaul pays dividends in virtually every part of the driving experience, from fuel efficiency gains (and lower emissions) to dynamic stability on the highway, to reduced interior noise levels that directly contribute to a calmer and more enjoyable ride.

Compared to the previous Pilot model, specific aerodynamic improvements include a 1.93-percent reduction in frontal area and a 10-percent reduction in the coefficient of drag (CdA), as determined by CFD simulations.

In front, a full-width air dam sweeps air around the vehicle sides, while additional guides direct air through the bumper and grille openings to the air-conditioning condenser and engine radiator, reducing air recirculation and drag. Inside the engine compartment, the airflow is then channeled to merge smoothly with air flowing under the Pilot. While beneath the vehicle a full-width front undercover, an aluminum engine undercover, and a mid-floor cover further aid in reducing turbulence and smoothing airflow in these areas. Strakes located ahead of the rear tires likewise redirect airflow around the tires for additional efficiency gains.

Special aerodynamic details that are readily visible on the body include virtually all of the sheet metal, the headlight lenses, side mirrors, windshield wipers (shape and placement), the door handles, the rear spoiler and even the taillight lenses. Also, the new windshield design sits flush with the upper section of the cowl (at the base of the windshield), further reducing turbulence and wind noise.

Next-Generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) Body Structure
The 2016 Pilot's enhanced Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure is the second generation of Honda's proprietary ACE structural design. ACE is an exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. It uses a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle, helping to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment. It can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash as well. ACE also helps reduce the chances that one vehicle will override or underride another, improving crash compatibility of vehicles that differ in size. ACE goes further by offering additional strength and protection in small overlap frontal collisions, which are among the most severe. Multiple material grades, including ultra-high-strength steel, are used in the Pilot's body construction to help optimize safety performance.

Body Construction
Utilizing Honda's new Global Light Truck Platform structure, the 2016 Pilot's curb weight is reduced by nearly 300 pounds compared to the previous model. Even so, it has 25-percent more torsional rigidity and is more tightly sealed than before, helping to provide class-leading dynamic performance along with a new level of cabin quietness befitting its status as a premium family SUV. These improvements benefit safety as well, helping the new Pilot target the highest possible crash ratings, including a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and a TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). See the Safety and Driver Assistance section for further information.

"3-Bone" Structure
Located under the front floor of the Pilot is a new "3-Bone" structure that improves impact load management, directing energy around the passenger cabin in the event of a frontal collision. The structure creates three different load pathways, or "backbones," that channel collision energy. One channels collision forces from the front of the vehicle directly underneath the passenger cabin; the other two channel collision forces under the vehicle's left and right side frames. The result is an improved capability to safely channel energy during a frontal crash. The structure also saves 61 lbs. in weight.

Optimized Material Grades
Multiple material grades are used in the Pilot's body construction to achieve excellent overall vehicle dynamics, optimize safety performance, and lower NVH. Materials range from seven different grades of steel, including premium high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel used in the unit-body; an aluminum hood and front bumper-reinforcement beam; and a cast-magnesium steering hanger beam. All were chosen to achieve the best combination of strength, rigidity, dynamic performance and light weight. Fully 61.5 percent of the body structure is composed of advanced materials, including the application of ultra-high-strength steel to 21.3 percent of the body.

Body Materials

Material Use Percentage
Ultra high-strength steel 21.3%
High-strength steel 34.6%
Mild steel 38.5%
Aluminum 3.3%
Magnesium 1.7%
Other 0.6%

Key Engineering Features
The 2016 Pilot features several unique advancements in body design and materials that significantly improve overall rigidity, while reducing weight. This directly helps improve overall vehicle dynamics, crash safety performance, interior quietness, and long-term durability.

Ultra-High-Strength Door Rings
The new Pilot has 1300-megapascals (MPa) ultra-high-strength steel door reinforcement beams and ultra-high-strength front door outer stiffener rings made of 1500-MPa hot-stamped steel. Laser welded and significantly stronger than ordinary steel, the ultra-high-strength steel reinforcements are designed to help better protect occupants in a frontal or side impact. Their increased strength allows the components to be made lighter, by 2.8 lbs., which also reduces overall vehicle weight for improved fuel efficiency.

Rigid Tailgate Opening Ring
The strength of the "tailgate ring" (the circular metal structure surrounding the tailgate) is vitally important for good vehicle handling, stability and ride quality. The tailgate ring on the 2016 Pilot contributes to the new model's 25-percent gain in torsional rigidity, benefiting ride, handling and NVH. In addition, the tailgate ring connects structurally to the rear suspension fitting points, further improving overall body stiffness and providing the rear suspension with a more solid mounting structure.

Structural Foam
Pilot body stiffness and therefore safety and NVH is further enhanced through the use of structural foam inserts in key locations. These include the left and right B-pillar stiffeners, left and right inside tailgate openings and inside a bracket that connects the left and right side center frames under the front floor.

Cast Magnesium Steering Hanger Beam
Located behind the instrument panel, the Pilot's cast magnesium steering hanger beam replaces the multi-part steel unit in the previous Pilot. Its purpose is as a structural attachment point for the steering column, pedals and instrument panel, as well as a structural element that helps the passenger cabin retain its shape in certain collisions.
The cast magnesium steering hanger beam offers several advantages compared to the previous steel unit:

  • Simpler construction — created from a single casting instead of multiple different extrusions and stampings, the new magnesium steering hanger beam offers more precise construction.
  • Lighter weight — the magnesium steering hanger beam saves 7.5 pounds compared to a comparable steel component, contributing to improved ride and handling, fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
  • Better fit and finish — the exacting tolerances of the magnesium steering hanger beam allow for more precise location of the instrument panel for improved fit and finish.

Composite Materials
The Pilot body structure also utilizes composite materials to further reduce weight while enhancing rigidity and noise dampening. One example is inside the hollow B-pillars, where composite stiffeners, together with the structural foam mentioned earlier, help improve body rigidity with reducing weight by 3 lbs. Another example is the base that supports the Pilot's battery. Created from a single composite casting, it holds the battery securely while adding minimal weight to the overall body structure, saving 4.6 lbs.

Aluminum Front Bumper Beam
The aluminum front bumper beam saves 2.2 lbs. while enhancing structural integrity.

Visibility
Overall visibility is improved courtesy of narrower A- and B-pillars, increasing total outward visibility for the driver from 271.4 degrees on the previous model to 283.5 degrees on the 2016 Pilot. The driver's situational awareness is further enhanced by features such as the standard Expanded View Driver's Mirror and Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, and available Honda LaneWatch™ display, blind sport information system (BSI) and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor. See Safety and Driver Assistance section for more details.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) Countermeasures
The new Pilot takes noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) countermeasures to the next level, positioning it at the top of its competitive set. All Pilot trims feature strategically placed body sealants, while the Touring and Elite trims add foam front and rear door acoustic barriers for additional sound attenuation. Additional NVH enhancements on all models include acoustic separators applied to the lower front portion of the doorframe, upper inside and upper outside portions of the A-pillar, the lower portion of the B-pillar, the rear portion of the rear doorframe, and the upper portion of the C-pillar. Thicker, sound-insulating acoustic glass (see below) further aids overall cabin quietness that is now among the best in class.

Acoustic Glass
Special acoustic laminated glass is used on the Pilot EX-L and above trims to help reduce noise entering the cabin. Tuned specifically to attenuate wind-noise frequencies, the windshield glass uses an outer layer of 2.0mm safety glass, a 0.7mm thick middle layer of acoustic polyvinyl butyral (PVB) and a 1.8mm inner layer for a total thickness of 4.5mm. This helps the Pilot place at the top of its class in wind-noise performance. The windshield also incorporates UV light-absorbing technology. The LX and EX trims utilize 4.7mm thick laminated glass with 2.0mm outer and inner layers and a 0.7mm regular PVB middle layer.

In addition, Pilot LX, EX and EX-L trims have 5.0mm tempered front door glass and 4.0mm tempered rear door glass, while the Touring and Elite trims are further advanced with acoustic 4.8mm laminated front door glass and 5.0mm tempered rear door glass. All 2016 Pilot trims have 3.1mm thick tailgate glass. The EX-L, Touring and Elite's front power moonroof uses 3.5mm glass, and the Pilot Elite's fixed panoramic glass roof uses 5.0mm laminated glass. See the Interior section for more information.

Fuel System
The 19.5-gallon fuel tank is molded of high-density polyethylene for low weight, freedom from corrosion and for impact resistance. It is positioned ahead of the rear wheels (and over the propeller shaft in AWD models) to help guard against collision damage. The shape of the tank is designed to diminish the likelihood of sloshing-fuel noise. The polyethylene filler pipe and fuel lines are lightweight, and resistant to corrosion and fuel vapor losses. A high-efficiency fuel pump is housed inside the fuel tank, and the fuel filter is a lifetime design that never needs replacement.

The 2016 Pilot utilizes an all-new chassis developed from the ground up to provide exceptionally high levels of ride comfort and confidence-inspiring handling and braking performance, while also making critical contributions to the even more family-friendly interior package, class-leading fuel efficiency and safety performance. Working in conjunction with the new Pilot's more rigid, lightweight and sound-insulating body structure (see Body section) the new chassis features major improvements to the suspension and steering systems, wheels, wheel bearings, tires and brakes. Also contributing to the dynamic improvements are the Pilot's lower weight, improved aerodynamics, lower center of mass, and improved horsepower and torque (see Body section and Powertrain section).

The stiffer new body structure allows for more flexibility in optimizing the suspension tuning to deliver significant gains in both dynamic handling performance and better isolation of road noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), as well as expanded third-row passenger space and improved passenger ingress/egress. The new suspension includes the first use of Amplitude Reactive Dampers on the Pilot, further enhancing Pilot's supple ride, enabling extremely low NVH, and sharpening cornering performance. Standard 18-inch alloy wheels and available 20-inch alloy wheels further improve steering response and overall agility. While more athletic, the Pilot chassis also contributes to lower running resistance, thanks to its low-drag brakes and low rolling-resistance tires. All of these qualities ideally position the 2016 Pilot to satisfy customers who want both a high-level of family-friendly utility and high levels of comfort, quietness and driving confidence.

Four-Wheel Independent Suspension
The Pilot independent front and rear suspension systems are engineered to provide long wheel travel and excellent compliance for a supple ride, together with the precise damping and spring rates needed for excellent handling and a sporty driving feel.

Front Suspension
At the front is a strut-type system with forged-aluminum lower control arms, hydraulic bushings, coil springs and a solid stabilizer bar. This setup uses moderate spring rates, relatively firm damping and specially tuned bushings for a smooth, controlled ride with exceptional cornering abilities. The upper front damper mounts provide a “triple path" load-bearing system that helps absorb road vibration and harshness.

Rear Suspension
At the rear is a compact multi-link design with a tubular stabilizer bar. This multi-link system allows a generous amount of wheel travel and excellent compliance for a supple ride, together with confident cornering and handling. All rear suspension control arms are steel – including the high-strength steel upper and lower control arms. Compared to the previous Pilot, the new 2016 Pilot has improved rear-suspension geometry, the upper damper mounts are now located on the body side rails for greater rigidity, and softer bushings are calibrated to reduce road noise without compromising handling.

Also compared to the previous Pilot generation, where the previous setup transmitted suspension loads to the vehicle's rear wheelhouse, the new setup transmits suspension loads to the more rigid body side frame, which allows for more aggressive tuning of suspension bushings to aid both ride comfort and handling precision. The transmission of road vibration to the second- and third-row seats is also significantly reduced. Further, the elimination of the forward trailing arm on the previous Pilot rear suspension allows for a 1.4-inch lower rear floor that, along with a 1.8-inch longer wheelbase and redesigned second-row seat, provides for easier third-row ingress and egress.

Vibration-Damping Subframes
The Pilot's engine, transmission, and front and rear suspension systems are mounted on rigid steel subframes. These subframes attach to the unit body at rubber-isolated mounting points that help keep powertrain and road noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) out of the passenger cabin. Two of the rear subframe mounts are filled with specially tuned hydraulic fluid for maximum effectiveness. Permanently sealed, they require no scheduled maintenance. The rear subframe is particularly sophisticated, with hydroformed side elements for maximum strength and minimal weight.

Amplitude Reactive Dampers
Amplitude Reactive Dampers provide superior ride comfort and handling in all driving conditions. The dampers have two separate hydraulic circuits – one tuned to optimize the ride quality on smooth roads with relatively small irregularities, and the other tuned to handle large inputs resulting from rough roads or large steering and braking inputs. As a result, the Pilot remains smooth and supple when cruising, and secure and stable in corners, with reduced body roll.

The primary Amplitude Reactive Damper technology consists of two separate damping pistons: a main piston and a second piston. To improve overall ride comfort, when smaller inputs occur during normal driving conditions, only the main piston works to provide the ideal damping characteristics. To improve the Pilot's ride and handling on rougher surfaces and during more aggressive driving, the second piston operates to provide additional damping force.

The Amplitude Reactive Dampers are a purely mechanical system that does not require electronic controls. Altogether, they provide a much wider range of effective damping performance than offered by the previous Pilot.

Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS)
Standard on all 2016 Pilot trims, Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) initiates steering inputs that prompt the driver to steer in the correct direction during cornering and in slippery road conditions. The system works with Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) and Electric Power Steering, helping to stabilize the vehicle under braking and also help mitigate understeer and oversteer. For further information see the Safety and Driver Assistance section.

The 2016 Pilot utilizes a 16.0:1 steering ratio, approximately 10-percent quicker than the previous Pilot model's steering. This offers increased agility in all forms of driving, while also complimenting the functionality of the torque-vectoring rear axle on the AWD models. (See the Powertrain section.) With 3.14 turns lock to lock and a 39.4-foot curb-to-curb turning diameter new Pilot is responsive to steering commands and maneuverable in tight spaces.

The steering column is located by a new cast magnesium steering hanger beam. Rigid and lightweight, the steering hanger beam is a structural member that directly contributes to improved handling and NVH performance. See the Body section for more information.

Four-Wheel Disc Braking System with Electronic Brake Distribution
The 2016 Pilot has 4-wheel disc brakes with a 4-channel anti-lock braking system for a powerful and linear brake feel and confident stops in a wide range of driving conditions. The ventilated front discs are 12.6 inches in diameter and use 2-piston calipers, while the solid rear discs are 13.0 inches in diameter and have single-piston calipers. The calipers utilize a spring-loaded mechanism to maintain separation between the brake pads and rotor to reduce brake drag when not in use, reducing rolling resistance and improving fuel efficiency in the process. See the images on pages 38-39.

For optimum performance with widely varying loads, Pilot has Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) system technology. EBD monitors braking force and adjusts front-to-rear brake effort to achieve maximum braking performance and stability. At the rear, a select-low braking strategy is used to help maintain directional stability in slippery driving. In the event one rear wheel verges on lock-up, triggering a pressure modulation at that wheel, brake pressure is also diminished at the adjoining wheel to help preserve the rear axle's lateral stability. The parking brake is set by stepping on a pedal located on the left side of the driver's foot well, freeing space in the center console area. The release is located on the lower left side of the instrument panel.

ABS with Brake Assist
The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) independently modulates braking power at each wheel to help the driver retain steering control during heavy braking. The Brake Assist system recognizes emergency braking situations and almost instantly applies full braking force when appropriate to help shorten braking distance. See the Safety and Driver Assistance section for more information.

Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control
Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) is an Electronic Stability Control system that works in conjunction with the Pilot's Drive-by-Wire™ throttle and its 4-channel ABS systems to enhance control capability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking, cornering or when the driver makes a sudden maneuver. VSA also provides a limited-slip differential effect for the driving wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction. While the driver can reduce the traction control effectiveness allowing more wheel slip during stuck condition by pressing the VSA button, ABS remains fully operational at all times. For further information see the Safety and Driver Assistance section.

Trailer Stability Assist
Standard on all Pilot models, Trailer Stability Assist helps enhance vehicle stability while a trailer is being towed. An integral part of Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®), Trailer Stability Assist detects trailer oscillations that can result from improper loading, excessive speed, adverse road conditions, crosswinds or emergency-avoidance maneuvers.

When such oscillations are detected, Trailer Stability Assist automatically activates to help damp the oscillations before they can increase and further upset the stability of the vehicle and trailer.

Wheels and Tires
The Pilot LX, EX and EX-L trims have stylish paired 10-spoke design, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with a machined face on EX and EX-L. The Touring and Elite trims have new 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with unique, upscale paired 10-spoke design with a machined face.

The Pilot LX, EX and EX-L trims come standard with 245/60 R18 Bridgestone all-season (M+S) tires, while the Touring and Elite trims have lower-profile 245/50 R20 Continental all-season (M+S) tires for enhanced driving performance. All tire choices offer improved steering precision, as well as 10-percent less rolling resistance, than the previous Pilot's tires, which contributes to greater fuel efficiency. See Low Running Resistance below.

All 2016 Pilot models include a spare tire on a steel wheel that is mounted below the cargo area, where it does not intrude on interior cargo storage space.

Low Running Resistance
Total vehicle running resistance is reduced nearly 20 percent versus the previous Pilot model. In addition to improvements in powertrain efficiency and vehicle aerodynamics, key engineering features for reduced running resistance include:

  • Tires with 10-percent less rolling resistance compared to the previous Pilot tires (see Wheels and Tires above).
  • Brake calipers that are designed to reduce drag when not in use, reducing rolling resistance by 18.6-percent compared to the previous Pilot braking system.
  • A new lightweight, low-drag wheel bearing design further improves overall driving efficiency.

Additional aerodynamic gains are found in the computer-aided engineering (CAE) optimized exterior shape. See the Body section for more information.

Agile Handling Assist
Standard on all Pilot trims, Agile Handling Assist selectively uses the vehicle's brakes to improve initial turning response and overall cornering ability. Agile Handling Assist utilizes brake vectoring to improve corner traceability and confident handling feel. By applying braking force to the inside wheels during cornering at high lateral G, the system creates a yaw moment, thus generating more turning force and reducing understeer.

Off-Road Capability
Honda engineers took thorough measures to ensure the off-road capabilities of the new Pilot. The vehicle meets design criteria, which was based on research at different off-road areas around the world. This research was the foundation for specific minimum performance criteria for the new Pilot, including off-road friendly approach and departure angles (18 degrees front and 19.7 degrees rear, respectively).

The available AWD system with computer-controlled traction utilization capabilities helps the Pilot meet typical off-road challenges without the need for low-range gears. (See the Powertrain section for a full description.) The system is designed for "decision free" operation, meaning that the driver does not need to actively choose when to engage all-wheel-drive. The system is always active and ready to proportion rear wheel torque as needed.

Towing
When equipped with a Honda dealer-installed accessory towing package, the new 2016 Pilot can tow up to 3,500 lbs. The available towing package includes a Class III hitch, towing kit, and wiring harness. Adding a Honda dealer-installed ATF cooler increases the towing capacity to 5,000 lbs. for AWD models. When not being used for towing, the hitch can double as an attachment point for a genuine Honda accessory bicycle rack. See the Accessories section for more information.

1 The ABS does not reduce the time or distance it takes to stop the vehicle. It only helps with steering control during hard braking. Always drive appropriately for the conditions.

2 The VSA may not function properly if tire type and size are mixed. Make sure to use the same size and type of tire, and the air pressures as specified. VSA cannot enhance stability in all driving situations and does not control the entire braking system. Always drive appropriately for the conditions.

3 Use TPMS-specific wheels only. For optimal tire wear and performance, tire pressure should be checked regularly with a gauge. Do not rely solely on the monitor system. The system cannot monitor the pressure of the spare tire.

Structures in the front of the 2016 Pilot are designed to help absorb energy in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Research by Honda shows that the following features can dramatically improve a pedestrian's chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle.

Specific pedestrian head injury mitigation features include:

  • Hood is designed to deform if contact is made with either an adult or a child pedestrian
  • Sufficient clearance exists between the hood and hard engine parts, allowing the hood to deform if impacted by a pedestrian
  • Windshield base has a unique section structure for efficient impact energy absorption
  • Energy-absorbing fender mounts and supports
  • Break-away windshield wiper pivots
  • Deformable hood hinges

Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control
Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) is an Electronic Stability Control system that works in conjunction with the Pilot's Drive-by-Wire™ throttle and its 4-channel ABS systems to enhance control capability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking, cornering or when the driver makes a sudden maneuver. VSA functions by applying brake force to one or more wheels independently while also managing the throttle, ignition and fuel systems to help the vehicle maintain the driver's intended path of travel.

The VSA system constantly analyzes data from sensors that monitor wheel speed, steering input, lateral and longitudinal G forces and yaw rate. It compares the driver's control inputs with the vehicle's actual response. Whenever the actual response falls outside of a predetermined acceptable range, VSA intervenes with a corrective action. For instance, if VSA detects an oversteer condition, the system may apply braking force to the outside front and rear wheels to counteract the unintended yawing effect. In the event of understeer, VSA may apply braking to the inside rear wheel while reducing engine power to help return the vehicle to its intended course.

VSA also provides a limited-slip differential effect for the front wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction. VSA is calibrated to function in a near-transparent manner, and in many cases a driver will not even be aware of its operation. However, anytime the system is enhancing vehicle stability, an indicator light flashes in the instrument cluster. While the driver can reduce the traction control effectiveness allowing more wheel slip during stuck condition by pressing the VSA button,  ABS remains fully operational at all times. See the Chassis section for more information.

Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS)
Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) is standard on all 2016 Pilot models. The system incorporates driving stability technology that initiates steering inputs that prompt the driver to steer in the correct direction during cornering and in slippery road conditions. Using vehicle speed and steering angle data, Motion-Adaptive EPS works with Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) and Electric Power Steering to detect instability in slippery road conditions both during cornering and under braking and automatically initiates steering inputs aimed at prompting the driver to steer in the correct direction. This advanced technology supports the driver's action in operating the vehicle more safely and comfortably.

Two examples of how Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) functions in conjunction with VSA are:

Stabilizes Vehicle under Braking
This function helps to correct the driver's steering input to reduce vehicle instability when the driver is braking hard on road surfaces with different friction coefficients (such as pavement that is partially covered with dirt or snow).

Mitigates Understeer and Oversteer
To mitigate potential understeer or oversteer situations, the system helps correct the steering inputs to help the driver trace the curve.

For more information see the Chassis section.

Brake Assist
A function of the VSA® system, the Brake Assist feature recognizes emergency braking situations and almost instantly applies added braking force. This Brake Assist feature is controlled by a special logic in the system that evaluates the pedal application rate and force to recognize a panic stop situation. At that point, the VSA modulator pump increases braking pressure while the pedal is still being pressed to ensure maximum stopping force, an action that can help shorten braking distance.

Advanced 4-Channel ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution
The Pilot is fitted with 4-wheel disc brakes with four-channel anti-lock braking (ABS). The ABS system also incorporates Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) circuitry that automatically proportions front-to-rear brake force based on the vehicle's dynamic load on each wheel. For more information see the Chassis section.

Dual-Stage, Multiple-Threshold Front Airbags (SRS)
Both the driver and front passenger are protected by advanced front airbags (SRS) that incorporate dual-stage and multiple-threshold activation technology. If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates depending on crash severity, seatbelt usage and other factors. Like other Honda vehicles, the driver's front airbag is located in the steering wheel while the passenger airbag is located on the top of the dash. When deployed, the passenger airbag inflates upward and then rearward to maximize its protective potential while reducing the likelihood of injuries caused by airbag deployment.

Driver and Front Passenger SmartVent® Side Airbags
Side airbags mounted in the outboard area of each front seatback are designed to help provide pelvic and thorax protection for the driver and front passenger in the event of a severe side impact. In the 2016 Pilot, a revised side airbag design allows the side airbags to deploy in a manner that helps mitigate the risk of injury to a smaller seat occupant. This advancement eliminates the need for the previous-generation Pilot's passenger side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS).

Side Curtain Airbags
All outboard seating positions are protected by side curtain airbags with rollover sensor system. In the event of a severe side impact, the side curtain airbags deploy from modules in the roof, providing a significant level of head protection in the window area. In the unlikely event of a rollover, a roll-rate sensor, along with multiple G sensors determine the rate of roll and deploy the side curtain airbags accordingly. The side curtain airbags will also deploy and provide head protection in frontal small overlap impacts, such as when the front corner of the vehicle collides with solid object.

Like the other airbag systems in the vehicle, the side curtain system utilizes sensors to determine the most appropriate timing of airbag deployment. To provide the optimal level of protection for occupants, testing was performed to determine the most appropriate timing and rate of deployment in the unlikely event of a rollover. The system uses algorithms to continually evaluate the situation and determines whether a rollover is imminent. The roll-rate sensor and multiple G sensors (accelerometers) determine the "scenario" and calculate the angle of roll and the speed of the vehicle in order to deploy the airbags at the correct point for optimum protection.

In the case of a rollover, the side curtain airbags on both sides of the vehicle will deploy. However, in the event of a sufficient side impact that does not result in a rollover, only the airbags on the impacted side of the vehicle will deploy. The airbag maintains full inflation for approximately three seconds after inflation to allow for the increased duration of a rollover accident.

Adjustable Head Restraints
The first and second row and third row center seating positions feature individually adjustable head restraints. The head restraints for the third row seats fold automatically when the seat fold-down straps are pulled simplifying the process of converting the Pilot into cargo-hauling mode. The headrests can also be folded down independently, improving rear visibility. See the Interior section for more information.

Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH)
All Pilot models are equipped with a child seat-mounting system called LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren). All three of the second-row seating positions (two positions on Elite trims) and the passenger side third-row outboard seating position are fitted with dedicated LATCH attachment points.

The LATCH system provides two lower anchors and an upper tether anchor. When used with a compatible child seat, the LATCH system provides attachment points between the child seat and the vehicle seat without having to use the vehicle's seat belts. Tether anchors are available for the remaining middle seating position and outboard driver's side in the third row. All seat belts except the driver's are equipped with a locking retractor that can be used to help secure any child seat. Both rear side doors are also equipped with childproof door locks for added protection.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
The Pilot is fitted with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that alerts a driver whenever the air pressure in one or more of the vehicle's tires decrease significantly below the recommended level. When the pressure in one or more tires drops sufficiently, it causes a low tire-pressure indicator, located in the instrument cluster or in the Multi-Information Display (MID), to illuminate. The information-selectable MID display can show all four tires pressures in real time and even if the TPMS information is not selected for viewing on the MID by the driver, it will appear automatically in the event one or more tires falls below the normal minimum pressure.

Tire Fill Assist
New for the 2016 Pilot, Tire Fill Assist10 works with TPMS to help the driver achieve the correct tire pressures quickly and easily. It does so by providing an audible chirp and flashing the parking lights when the correct air pressure is reached for any tire being filled.

Expanded View Driver's Mirror
All Pilot models are equipped with the Expanded View Driver's Mirror that increases the driver's field of vision to provide a better view of objects to the back and side of the vehicle. The Expanded View Driver's Mirror uses a flat reflective plane on the inner portion of the mirror closest to the door, while the outer portion of the mirror uses a convex element to provide a broader field of view.

Multi-Angle Rearview Camera
All 2015 and newer Honda models, including the 2016 Pilot, incorporate a multi-angle rearview camera. Viewable on the Pilot's 8-inch touchscreen, the camera can show a top view, normal or wide view when the transmission is in Reverse. The LX trim features static guidelines that help drivers better judge distances, while EX, EX-L, Touring and Elite trims have dynamic guidelines that project the vehicle's future path based on the driver's steering inputs.

Honda LaneWatch™
For the first time on Pilot the EX, EX-L and Touring trims include the Honda LaneWatch™ display, while the Elite trim applies the blind spot information system in place of LaneWatch. Honda LaneWatch uses a camera located at the bottom the passenger-side exterior mirror to display a wide-angle view of the passenger side roadway on the new, larger 8-inch Display Audio touchscreen. The image appears when the right turn signal is activated or when a button on the end of the turn signal stalk is pressed.

The typical field of view for a passenger-side mirror is approximately 18 to 22 degrees, but the LaneWatch™ display field-of-view is about four times greater, or approximately 80 degrees. The system helps the driver to see traffic, pedestrians or objects often in the vehicle's blind spot. To help make judging distance easier, three reference lines are shown. Drivers should visually confirm roadway conditions prior to changing lanes.

LaneWatch™ can be customized to suit the driver's preferences. Turn-signal activation of the LaneWatch™ system can be switched on or off, as can the three on-screen reference lines. Screen brightness, contrast and black level are also adjustable.

Blind Spot Information (BSI)
Included in the new Elite trim, the blind spot information (BSI) system uses radar sensors located on both sides of the rear bumpers to continually monitor blind-spot areas to help determine whether a vehicle is in the driver's blind spot. This is the first Pilot application of this technology. The system provides a visual cue by lighting an indicator near the sideview mirrors, depending on which side of the Pilot a vehicle is detected. The system also gives an audible warning and flashes the indicator to further alert the driver if the turn signal is activated on the side where a vehicle is being detected. To prevent false alarms while maneuvering at low speed, the BSI system is disabled below approximately 20 mph.

Note that BSI cannot detect all vehicles, and that some vehicles or devices may interfere with the system. Drivers should always visually check for the presence of other vehicles before changing lanes. See the 2016 Pilot BSI Animation for an active representation of system operation.

Rear Cross Traffic Monitor
For the first Honda application of this technology, the Pilot Elite trim, the Rear Cross Traffic Monitor works in conjunction with the BSI radar sensors to enhance driver confidence when backing up. The system is especially useful when reversing in congested parking lots with an obstructed view from driver's seat.

The system utilizes a pair of blind-spot radar units located in the rear bumper corners. When Reverse is selected and an approaching vehicle is detected, arrows indicating the approaching vehicles direction are shown on the center display's rear camera image as well as an audible warning.

Honda Sensing™
Comprised of a suite of standard and available safety and driver assistive features, Honda Sensing™ helps provide greater awareness of driving conditions around the vehicle. Honda Sensing™ comes on EX and EX-L trims with the sensing package and is offered as standard equipment on Touring and Elite trims.

Honda Sensing™ features include the following:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)*
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)* - Integrated into CMBS
  • Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)*
  • Road Departure Mitigation (RDM)*^
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)* - Integrated into RDM
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)*

Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™)
Included in the Pilot EX and EX-L with Honda Sensing and standard on the Touring and Elite trims, the Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™) is one of the most sophisticated driver-assistive technologies available. The CMBS's millimeter wave radar unit, located behind the front grille, and monocular camera, located between the rearview mirror and windshield, scans traffic conditions ahead of the Pilot.

When the system determines a collision is possible with a detected vehicle, the CMBS's integrated FCW system's visual and audible alerts to prompt the driver to take corrective actions. The visual alert appears on the Multi-Information Display (MID). If the situation is not resolved, CMBS can apply different levels of autonomous braking action to help reduce vehicle speed and eventual collision forces, and therefore to help reduce the severity of a collision if the driver doesn't take corrective action on their own. The radar unit and camera work simultaneously and cooperatively to control the VSA modulator, which initiates any required braking.

Due to the effectiveness of its monocular camera, the CMBS on the Pilot can recognize shapes and differentiate between a vehicle and a pedestrian, warning the driver in each case. See the 2016 Pilot CMBS Animation for an active representation of system operation.

It is important to note that CMBS cannot detect all objects ahead, nor is it intended to replace the driver's assessment of traffic conditions and control of the vehicle. The driver must intervene in certain situations, and must always be attentive when using the system. Although in many cases CMBS will stop the vehicle, it is not intended to apply enough braking force to prevent all collisions. Based on the conditions, the system also may not perform all visual- and audible-alert stages, and may instead automatically engage the brakes if the system deems it necessary.

Forward Collision Warning (FCW) – Integrated into CMBS
Integrated with CMBS and Included in the Pilot EX and EX-L with Honda Sensing and standard on the Touring and Elite trims, Forward Collision Warning (FCW) uses the monocular camera to detect vehicles ahead and to determine whether a collision is likely. This reduces the stress of driving in traffic, while also contributing to an increased level of passive safety.

If the FCW system detects a vehicle in front of the Pilot and then determines that a collision may occur (due to a speed differential between the two vehicles), it will trigger visual and audible alerts for the driver. These include a "BRAKE" message on the Multi-Information Display (MID), and a series of beeps to alert the driver to apply the brake pedal. The FCW system will not automatically brake, and the driver remains responsible for safely operating the vehicle and avoiding collisions. If the driver doesn't respond to the FCW warnings, however, the CMBS is triggered into operation.

Drivers may adjust the distance at which FCW alerts occur by pressing the "SETTINGS" button, selecting "Vehicle Settings," and then choosing "Driver Assist System Setup" and the "Forward Collision Warning Distance" option. At this point they may choose between "Long," "Normal" or "Short." And if they choose to, drivers may also select "Off" to disable the FCW system entirely.

Note that the FCW system cannot detect all objects ahead and may not detect a given object; accuracy will vary based on weather, speed and other factors.

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)
Included in the Pilot EX and EX-L with Honda Sensing and standard on the Touring and Elite trims, Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) provides a less stressful driving experience by reducing steering correction movements and driving effort on the highway. LKAS uses a camera to read lane markings and uses the Electric Power Steering to assist the driver in maintaining their position within the lane.

Designed for the U.S. road structure, the system uses a monocular camera mounted on the upper portion of the windshield to identify painted lanes, Botts' Dots and Cat Eye markers at speeds between 45 mph and 90 mph. When LKAS senses that the driver is drifting from the middle of a detected lane, the system generates corrective steering torque to assist the driver in maintaining lane position.

LKAS may be activated and deactivated using a switch located on the lower right part of the steering wheel. The system will suspend operation after several seconds if the driver takes his or her hands off the wheel, accompanied by a visual warning in the MID, resuming when the driver makes a steering input. See the 2016 Pilot LKAS Animation for an active representation of system operation.

Road Departure Mitigation (RDM)
Included in the Pilot EX and EX-L with Honda Sensing and standard on the Touring and Elite trims, Road Departure Mitigation (RDM) is a new technology for Honda. Integrated with LDW, RDM uses a monocular camera (mounted on the upper portion of the windshield) to identify solid or dashed painted lane lines, Botts' dots and Catseye markers. RDM uses both steering force, via EPS, and, if the vehicle is detected leaving a lane marked by solid lines, braking force, via VSA, to help the Pilot stay in its lane.

The monocular camera recognizes lane features and identifies the lane. If the RDM system determines that the Pilot is about to leave a detected lane, it will provide steering assist (primary) and in rare occasions when steering assist is not sufficient to avoid leaving a lane marked by a solid line, braking assist, to help the driver stay on the road. RDM is integrated with the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system to provide moderate braking, and with the Electric Power Steering (EPS) system to provide steering input.

Multiple visual and audible warnings alert the driver when the RDM system is taking corrective action. These include a lane departure warning on the driver's Multi Information Display (MID) along with an audible warning.

RDM also has a customizable initial warning of either a steering wheel shake/vibration, or an audible alert. This can be customized in the vehicle settings. See the 2016 Pilot RDM Animation for an active representation of system operation.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW) - Integrated into RDM
Included in the Pilot EX and EX-L with Honda Sensing and standard on the Touring and Elite trims, Lane Departure Warning (LDW) is designed to alert the driver if the vehicle is leaving a detected lane without the turn signal being activated. The system functions at speeds from 45 to 90 mph on straight or slightly curved roads, alerting the driver of deviations from a detected lane. The LDW system utilizes the same upper front windshield camera used for CMBS® and LKAS and provides the visual and auditory alerts prior to the other systems actively engaging.

If the vehicle begins to move out of a detected lane without the turn signal activated, LDW illuminates a Lane Departure message on the Multi-Information Display (MID) and sounds an audible warning, advising the driver to take appropriate action. The system can be activated and deactivated by pressing the LDW button located on the instrument panel, to the left of the steering column.

There are certain conditions under which the system may not engage or operate, including inclement weather (e.g., snow, ice or heavy rain) and extreme cabin heat (due to operability of the camera). The system will automatically suspend operation when the brakes are applied or the turn signals are used. LDW may not detect all lane markings or lane departures; accuracy will vary based on weather, speed and road condition. The driver remains responsible for safely operating the vehicle.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
Included in the Pilot EX and EX-L with Honda Sensing and standard on the Touring and Elite trims, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) allows the driver to set a desired speed and following interval from a vehicle detected ahead, allowing the use of cruise control in light traffic conditions. This significantly reduces the driver stress of driving in traffic. The system uses the millimeter wave radar and monocular camera to continually track the distance to the vehicle ahead, and then adjusts the Pilot's speed to maintain the set following interval. A short, medium, long, or extra-long interval can be selected. When required, the Pilot autonomously brakes using the Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) modulator. ACC operates in the following ways in the listed circumstances:

  • A preceding vehicle is detected in the lane ahead – decelerates automatically, if required, and then controls the following distance.
  • Another vehicle merges in between the Pilot and the preceding vehicle – automatically switches "targets" to the nearest preceding vehicle.
  • The preceding vehicle exits the lane – ACC system continues at cruise-control speed previously selected by driver (25 to 90 mph).

See the 2016 Pilot ACC Animation for an active representation of system operation.

A Multi Information Display (MID) message and audible warning alert the driver when the ACC function is activated. See the Powertrain section for more information.

Exterior Styling
Starting with a bright-chromed three-bar grille design and sweeping rearward from there, the 2016 Pilot's all-new exterior design conveys that Honda's flagship SUV has gone full-force into the wind tunnel. Literally every inch of the exterior surface has been subjected to intensive tuning, backed up by testing, to ensure that the body design is as aerodynamically efficient as it is visually exciting.

The lenses of the projector beam headlights are rakish and aggressive, and the chiseled front fascia and air inlets evoke the high-performance face of a sports car. The hood and front fenders are strengthened with sharp character lines that add a muscular and purposeful air. The long roofline sweeps along in one dramatic curve, reminiscent of an airplane's wing chord, from the A-pillars all the way back to the C-pillars, where the roofline drops subtly downward and then terminates in a drag reducing spoiler.

Along the body sides, another crisp character line extends from the front wheel arches up and rearward through the Pilot's rear door handles, further lending the impression of a vehicle in swift flight. Meanwhile, the side sills and lower doors emphasize the Pilot's wide, firmly planted stance, visually anchoring the Pilot to the road. In back, the wide fender profile, large tailgate and available new LED taillight array further add to the Pilot's substantial feel, while bright satin trim on the rear fascia contributes to its look of sophistication. Touring and Elite trims cleanly integrate new lower-profile, silver-finished roof rails with reduced aerodynamic drag versus the previous design.

Tailgate Design and Features
The top-hinged tailgate function has been substantially refined and simplified on the 2016 Pilot. On all Pilot models, the tailgate now features fixed glass, reducing weight and complexity. As before, the tailgate glass incorporates an electric defogger system, activated by a button on the dash, along with an intermittent rear wiper and washer nozzle.

Pilot EX-L and above trims receive an improved power tailgate design. Instead of using a motor, lever and arm system to open and close the tailgate as in previous models, the new 2016 Pilot uses a spindle-type strut on the left side. This "active" strut contains a small electric motor and planetary gear set. Fully sealed, the spindle-type strut lends the tailgate area a cleaner appearance while also helping to improve cargo room.

The power tailgate can be operated via the remote key fob, from a button on the driver's door panel, a button above the rear license plate (for opening) or from a button located inside the tailgate (for closing).

LED Lighting
The 2016 Pilot incorporates a wide range of available light-emitting diode (LED) exterior lighting features, including LED taillights, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), and LED low-beam projector headlights.

LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL)
The Pilot EX, EX-L, Touring and Elite trims have bright, distinctive LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL). A signature design feature of the new Pilot, the DRLs utilize a wing shape positioned above and beside the round projector low-beams. Shaped to match the taut, athletic look of the new Pilot, the LED DRL array is wider at the side and thinner on top, gradually tapering as it moves toward the inside of the headlight lens. Stylistically, the DRLs strongly and clearly define the front corners of the Pilot.

LED Projector Headlights
Exclusively on the Pilot Elite, LED low-beam projector headlights provide improved nighttime illumination and visibility compared to contemporary high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights. Besides improving driver confidence and passive safety, the LED headlights use less energy, helping to enhance fuel efficiency by reducing engine loads. In addition, the LED headlights last up to three times longer than HID headlights and up to six times longer than halogen headlights – contributing to less frequent replacement and the associated cost savings. An auto on/off function is included, and the low-beams are also keyed to the remote key fob operation.

LED Taillights
All 2016 Pilot trims feature LED taillights, whose wing-shaped appearance matches the signature design of the available front LED DRLs. As with the DRLs, the LED taillight array is wider at the side and thinner on top, gradually tapering as it moves across the taillight lens.

See the Interior section for additional information on LED lighting.

Windshield Wipers with Rain Sensing
The 2016 Pilot's new wiper design uses fewer parts – 11 versus 17 on the previous model – to reduce replacement cost. The wiper arms are also placed lower on the front cowl, completely out of the driver's view when the wipers are not in operation.

The Pilot Elite includes rain-sensing wipers that automatically activate if water is detected on the windshield. Designed to cover the maximum possible windshield area, the left (driver) and right (front passenger) windshield wipers are 25.6 inches and 23.6 inches long, respectively. The rear wiper is 13.8 inches long.

Exterior Colors
All 2016 Pilot trims are available in eight exterior colors including three metallic and five pearl colors. All colors have a strong character, offering expressive contrasts that complement the Pilot's body-panel curves and angles, while also exhibiting a smart luxury appearance. The colors are:

2015 Pilot – 2016 Pilot Interior Space Comparison

Cargo Carrying
The Pilot's cargo area is designed with versatile utility in mind. The Pilot's Flexible Cargo Management System features a two-position cargo lid that lets you hide cargo in a lower compartment, out of sight. It can also be repositioned at the bottom on the cargo compartment to make room for taller cargo. In this mode, the Pilot can accommodate a large 82-quart ice chest without folding the third-row seats. The cargo lid is also reversible – carpeted on one side and with a durable and water resistant hard plastic surface on the flipside – perfect for holding wet or dirty items. A side compartment is designed to handle small items, like groceries or a gallon of milk. The cargo area's flat floor makes loading easier. A 12-volt power outlet is positioned in the cargo area for greater convenience on EX and above trims.

Behind the third row of seating, the Pilot LX offers 18.5 cubic feet1 of storage area. The third-row seats are split 60/40, and each side can be folded flat. This opens up a total of 55.9 cubic feet1 of space behind the second row of seating. With both the second and third rows of seating folded, the Pilot offers a maximum of 109.0 cubic-feet1 of cargo space.

Multi-Function Center Console
The Pilot interior offers a range of convenient storage features for the driver and passengers. The center console is specially engineered to offer tremendous versatility and utility. Up front, it has a smartphone tray and a pair of cupholders. The main storage compartment is topped by a sliding tambour door that disappears from view when opened, instead of getting in the way as a hinged lid might. When closed, it creates a large, rigid and flat surface upon which items, like a purse, can be placed. Inside is a sliding smartphone tray, along with a 12-volt power outlet and USB4 and auxiliary jacks. The interior compartment is large enough to accommodate a purse or up to five iPads.

The rear of the center console includes automatic climate controls for the second-row passengers. When equipped with a Rear Entertainment System (RES), controls for its operation are also located here.

Steering Wheel
The steering wheel, leather-wrapped on EX-L and above trims, incorporates the most commonly used controls, allowing the driver to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road.

In all trims, the steering wheel offers manual tilt and telescopic adjustment. Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® and audio system controls are located on the left side of the steering wheel; cruise control and Multi-Information Display (MID) controls are on the right side. Trims with Honda Sensing™ have LKAS and ACC controls located on the right side of the steering wheel as well. On Touring and Elite trims, tucked out of view but within fingertip reach are a pair of paddle shifters that allow for manual operation of the 9-speed transmission. A heated steering wheel is standard in the Pilot Elite.

One-Touch Power Moonroof with Tilt Feature
The Pilot EX-L, Touring and Elite trims feature a power tilting and sliding front moonroof with a manual sunshade. To tilt or slide the moonroof, the driver or front passenger needs only to fully press the ceiling-mounted switch once (instead of pressing and holding it for several seconds). The moonroof fully opens or closes automatically. However, if the operator wishes to only partially open or close the moonroof (such as to achieve partial ventilation), a lighter touch yields fully manual control. The moonroof can also tilt to provide ventilation. An auto-reverse feature is built in, helping to mitigate the possibility of a pinched finger or limb. If the moonroof motor's ECU detects a threshold level of mechanical resistance, indicating a possible obstruction, the motor will automatically reverse and reopen the moonroof.

Panoramic Glass Roof
The Pilot Elite exclusively features a standard fixed panoramic glass roof over the second- and third-row seats. The glass panel adds to the feeling of open airiness, and has a motorized sunshade controlled from the first row seats. The Pilot structure is engineered to accommodate the panoramic glass roof while still meeting crucial roof crush safety standards and minimizing intrusions to the cabin space. See the Safety and Driver Assistance section for more information.

Power Windows, Locks and Mirrors
Power windows are standard equipment on all Pilot models and include auto-up and -down operation on the driver's and front passenger's windows. Power door locks and power mirrors are standard equipment on all Pilot models. Pilot AWD models EX and above include heated exterior mirrors. Smart entry is standard on Pilot EX and above trims.

Sliding Sunvisors
To provide more flexible shading from the sun, all Pilots come equipped with sliding driver and front passenger sunvisors that can be extended 6.1inches along their mounting shaft, a distance that provides perpendicular shade for the eyes even when the front seats are in their rear-most position.

Second-Row Sliding Sunscreens
For increased rear-seat privacy, reduced solar loading and glare, Pilot trims with the Rear Entertainment System have standard manually operated sunshades for each rear door side window.

Auto-Dimming Rearview Mirror
Pilot EX-L, Touring and Elite trims feature an electro chromatic interior rearview mirror that automatically dims during nighttime driving to reduce glare from the headlights of following vehicles.

Meter
The Pilot has analog instrumentation with large tachometer on the left and coolant-temperature and fuel-level gauge on the right of a central 4.2-inch full-color Multi-Information Display (MID) that provides a range of information and trip computer functions. The digital speedometer is prominently positioned front-and-center above the MID.

The gauge package progressively illuminates to give the driver a welcoming feel upon entry. When the door is first opened, the instrument lighting illuminates and then brightens progressively to 100-percent illumination when the ignition is switched on. The illuminated instrument panel then comes alive, indicating that the car is ready to go. At the end of the drive, the instrument lighting dims progressively.

Multi-Information Display (MID)
The Pilot instrument panel provides important vehicle information via a Multi-Information Display (MID) positioned centrally in the meter panel. Controls positioned on the right side of the steering wheel allow the driver to cycle the MID display through multiple screens of information from sources including LKAS, ACC and more. The Maintenance Minder™ system alerts the Pilot driver of upcoming maintenance needs via the MID and should a fault occur with the vehicle, specific warning information will appear. The display indicates when to change the oil, air cleaner, transmission fluid, spark plugs or coolant, as well as when to rotate the tires.

Engine Immobilizer
Complementing the remote entry system is a standard engine-immobilizer system. A special electronically coded key prevents the car from being started-even if a mechanical duplicate of the key is used. A transponder, built into the key, signals the immobilizer control unit that the key is genuine. If the car is hot-wired, or an unauthorized key is used, the engine will not start.

Transmission Controls
In the Pilot LX, EX and EX-L, the 6-speed automatic transmission has a conventional straight-gate shifter that is intuitive and easy-to-use and takes up little space in the center console. In the Touring and Elite models with a standard 9-speed automatic transmission, the conventional console-mounted shift lever is replaced with a fully electronic, shift-by-wire gear selector. Park, Neutral, Drive and Sport are selected with the push of a button. See the Powertrain section for more information.

Smart Entry and Push Button Start/Stop
For the first time, the 2016 Pilot offers the upscale convenience of Smart Entry and Push Button Start/Stop.

Smart Entry
Included on the EX and above trims, the Smart Entry system simplifies approaching, entering and operating the Pilot – especially when the driver has his or her hands full. To gain entry to vehicle, the driver simply pulls one of the two front door handles while the remote is in his or her possession. The LX trim Pilot retains the previous remote entry system.

Push Button Start/Stop
On all trims, once the driver has opened the door and is seated, the driver simply pushes the START/STOP button positioned on the instrument panel while pressing the brake pedal to start the vehicle. Powertrain operation and certain electrical functions are ended when the START/STOP button is pressed again at the conclusion of the drive. For accessory mode the driver simply presses the START/STOP button without pressing the brake pedal. The new Pilot's START/STOP button features a pulsating light to help the driver more easily locate the button.

Remote Engine Start
All Pilot models with the exception of the LX trim feature standard remote engine start. This enables drivers to start their Pilot in advance of the drive, thereby activating the climate control system with a target temperature of 72 degrees before they get to the vehicle – perfect for hot or cold days. The system can provide owners with the comfort of a pre-warmed vehicle on a cold winter morning – or a pre-cooled interior on hot days. The system will automatically operate the heater, front and rear defrosters, front heated seats (if equipped), heated steering wheel (if equipped), heated side mirror, air conditioning, and front seat ventilation as needed.

The remote engine start feature is built into the key fobs supplied with the vehicle, and is designed to have a range of operation of approximately 180 feet. To start the engine remotely, the owner presses the LOCK button and then holds the ENGINE button for a second. The Pilot's hazard lights will flash, indicating that the signal has been received. When the engine is started remotely, the wipers, lighting and audio systems remain off, and the security system remains set. The engine will run for up to 10 minutes after remote starting and can be extended by another 10 minutes using the same procedure, and then shut off automatically if the owner doesn't reach the vehicle within that time. When the owner does get to the Pilot within 10 minutes, or extended period if the procedure is initiated a second time, the engine will keep running while the owner unlocks the vehicle, gets in, applies the brake and presses the Pilot's START button, which turns on all of the vehicle's systems.

HomeLink® Remote System
Pilot EX and higher trims feature a HomeLink® universal remote system, located in the overhead control panel, which can be programmed with the codes of up to three devices, such as a garage-door opener or home security system.

Driver Preferences
The Pilot Touring and Elite trims come with two keyless remotes with unique identifiers. Each remote can be set with unique profiles to accommodate the individual preferences of two different drivers. The available preferences include driver seat and mirror positions, along with select HVAC functions. Other preferences include turning entry lights on or off, audio system pre-sets, air conditioning preferences, and navigation system settings. In the event both owners use the car at the same time, the Pilot will recognize the keyless remote that approaches the driver's door first.

Locking
After parking, a press of the LOCK button on the remote will simultaneously lock all the doors and tailgate. On EX and above trims a touch of the soft-touch lock button on either front door handle locks all doors and trunk to secure the Pilot. The system will not allow the remote to be locked in the interior of the Pilot.

Walk Away Door Lock
Included on EX and above trims, the new Walk Away Door Lock feature automatically locks the Pilot when the driver leaves the vehicle. This hands-free locking capability adds everyday convenience that's especially useful when the driver has his or her hands full or is distracted. In typical use, when all doors are closed and the driver walks away, the Pilot will automatically lock when the key holder's distance from the vehicle exceeds 6.5 feet for two seconds or more and when no other key is detected inside the vehicle. An audible buzzer sounds and the hazard lights flash to confirm that the vehicle has locked. The Walk Away Door Lock feature is programmable, and may be turned on or off as the driver prefers.

Tailgate Operation
The remote also includes a dedicated button that will unlock the tailgate on Pilot LX and EX trims, or cause the power tailgate to open/close on the Pilot EX-L and above trims. See Exterior section for more information.

Capless Fueling System
The Pilot's capless fueling eliminates the fuel cap, meaning that fueling the vehicle simply requires opening the fuel lid, refueling, and then closing the lid. This smart and easy-to-use design eliminates the need to touch a dirty fuel cap, reduces the possibility of damaging the vehicle's paint with the fuel cap or tether, or forgetting the fuel cap at the gas station. It also eliminates the possibility of activating an emissions warning by failing to properly re-install the fuel cap. And finally, the capless fueling system allows the use of a smaller fuel-cap door, which cleans up the lines of the vehicle.

The system consists of two integrated components, an outer shutter mechanism that prevents the intrusion of dirt and dust, and a self-sealing fueling flap that is closed by a torsion spring. Both operate automatically.

At a gas station, the driver simply opens the fuel lid and then inserts the fuel nozzle. Inserting the nozzle automatically opens the outer shutter and fueling flap. When fueling is complete, removing the fuel nozzle automatically closes both the fueling flap and outer shutter.

Hill Start Assist
The Hill Start Assist function helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when the driver switches from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal while the vehicle is stopped on a hill. Hill Start Assist automatically activates when the vehicle senses a certain incline and is fully stopped in any forward gear when facing up hill or reverse gear when facing downhill. The system uses a longitudinal G-sensor along with a wheel speed sensor to control the hydraulic brake modulator. Hill Start Assist, when activated, will release the brakes when the driver depresses the throttle or if the driver doesn't press the accelerator after a few seconds.

Auto high-beam
The Pilot Elite's Auto high-beam makes optimal use of the vehicle's headlights. When the headlight switch is set in the Auto position, the system automatically illuminates the high beams until a dedicated camera detects oncoming traffic and automatically switches to low beams.

First Row Seating
The Pilot's new front bucket seats are designed to provide comfortable support for a wide range of body types, along with secure lateral support for cornering. The seats feature fabric seating surfaces in LX and EX trims, with upgraded leather in the EX-L, Touring and Elite trims. The Pilot driver's seat on EX and above features 10-way power adjustability (8-way power seat plus 2-way power lumbar support). The EX-L adds a front passenger seat that offers 4-way power adjustability as standard. In the Touring and Elite, all driver's seat power adjustments are included in the Smart Entry system. The system stores a pair of user profile seat settings – one for each of the two key fobs that come standard with the Pilot. Heated front seats are standard in the Pilot EX-L, Touring and Elite trims. The Elite trim also includes ventilated front seats.

Second Row Seating
The Pilot's roomy second-row seating is designed for maximum comfort and versatility, with a 60/40 split and folding design that makes it easy to accommodate passengers or long cargo. The new Elite trim has two luxurious second-row captain's chairs that can fold to accommodate cargo. The captain's chairs have fold-down padded inboard armrests, and each seatback offers multiple reclining angles and six inches of fore-aft travel for greater second- and third-row passenger comfort. A center console with storage tray and a pair of cup holders is positioned between the captain's chairs. The console is constructed of a robust material and is designed with a low profile to allow access to the third-row seats from between the second-row. In the Pilot Elite, heated second-row seats are standard.

Contributing to the ease of third row entry and exit is the new one-touch feature on EX-L and above trims. Two illuminated buttons on each of the outboard seats – one button located on the seat base and a second button on the upper portion of the seatback – are easily reached from outside the vehicle or from the third-row seat. When pressed, the electrically operated buttons trigger a spring-loaded mechanism that automatically tilts and slides the seat to its forward-most position. To help reduce the risk of unintentional operation, the buttons will not operate unless the brake pedal is being pressed or the gear selector is in Park. The seat returns to its mid-point setting when the user pulls or pushes back on the seatback. The second row seats on the LX and EX trims are operated with a manual lever.

Third Row Seating
The Pilot's One-touch feature, increased third-row step-in width (2.5-inches wider) and lower step-in height (1.2-inch lower) provide for easier access to the 60/40 split and folding third row. The third-row seat backs have a 3-position reclining capability.

See the Interior section for further information and images of seating configurations.

New Available Pilot Audio and Connectivity Features

  • 8-inch touchscreen Display Audio system with Android operating system
  • New-generation "2.0" SiriusXM® Radio3
  • Pandora®4 interface
  • SMS Text Message function
  • HondaLink™ connected-car system5
  • Blu-ray™ (Touring, Elite)/DVD/CD Rear Entertainment System (RES)

Pilot LX Audio
The Pilot LX has a standard 200-watt AM/FM radio audio system with seven speakers including a subwoofer and a USB port6 to allow the connection of other compatible devices. The system can play Pandora content from a compatible device via the USB port, or wirelessly, via Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®.7 The audio system has a 5-inch (diagonal) display screen and conventional knobs and buttons to control the various functions. A CD player is available as a dealer-installed option.

8-Inch Display Audio Touchscreen
The new Display Audio system standard in the 2016 Pilot EX, EX-L, Touring and Elite is the most advanced system ever offered by Honda. The intuitive and easy-to-use 8-inch touchscreen lets you swipe, tap and pinch – just like on a tablet or smartphone – to control the vehicle's audio system, display settings and other advanced features. On the EX and EX-L trims, the 225-watt audio system has seven speakers including a subwoofer. The Touring and Elite trims get a 540-watt system with 10 speakers including a subwoofer.

Pilot offers AM/FM, SiriusXM, HondaLink content and HD Radio.8 A compact disc player is now offered as a dealer-installed option. Pilot trims with the Rear Entertainment System (RES) can play CDs in the same drive that plays DVDs and in Touring and Elite trims, Blu Ray media as well.

The EX-L with Navigation, and the Touring and Elite include Display Audio with a fully integrated and fully featured Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with continuously updated traffic information.

Icons resembling smartphone apps are displayed on the high-definition, capacitive touchscreen, making the interface intuitive and easy to use. Interfaces for  standard internet-sourced music and media options, such as Pandora® can be displaced and controlled on the Display Audio interface, with the ability to create personalized stations, tap to "like" songs, and view album artwork directly from the touchscreen. Display Audio also integrates touch operation of the menu and return functions for a modern and sleek look.

SiriusXM® Radio
A new generation 2.0/3.0 version of SiriusXM® Radio is a standard feature in the EX and above trims, and it provides more than 165 channels of digital programming with near CD-quality sound. The SiriusXM® signal is beamed from two broadcast satellites positioned in geostationary orbit above Earth. The beams from these two broadcast satellites combine to span the entire continental United States and some of Canada.

SiriusXM® Radio programming includes channels devoted to music, sports, talk, traffic, weather, children's programming and entertainment. When the audio system plays SiriusXM® Radio, the audio system displays the current category, station, song title or artist's name.

This latest generation of SiriusXM includes many all new features, including pause, fast forward and rewind. There is also an instant replay feature and the ability to hear all songs from the beginning on preset channels. The new Sports Flash feature lets you listen to your favorite (non-sports) programming, and if your favorite team makes a big play in a live game that is being broadcast on SiriusXM, you will receive an on-screen alert. With a touch of a soft-key you can hear up to 30 seconds of audio before and including the big play.

Pandora® Compatibility
Pilot trims EX and above are designed to provide a convenient interface for Pandora®, a free music service that allows users to open an account online and create up to 100 personalized internet "radio stations" that are based on favorite songs or artists. Users can choose among their stations and listen via computer, and can also download a free smartphone Pandora® app, which allows users listen to the same list of personalized stations via their compatible phone. Although Pandora® is free, phone data charges apply.

An iPhone or compatible Android phones can be connected wirelessly, using Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®. To use Pandora®, the Pandora app is launched on a compatible connected smartphone and the vehicle's audio source is set to Pandora®. The audio screen shows Pandora® information and album art, and the audio controls allow listeners to choose from among existing stations, pause, resume, skip forward, and mark a track with "Like" or "Dislike" ratings. Some functionality of the Pandora® app is locked out when using the Pilot's Pandora® interface.

HondaLink®
The Display Audio system with next generation HondaLink allows the customer's digital lifestyle to seamlessly integrate with the car and provides access to a world of cloud-based information. The all-new application-based platform connects customers to online content both inside and outside the car. The connection between the system and the user's smartphone is made through the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® wireless interface. A HondaLink phone app provides convenient access for many services including location searches, local weather, messaging, Maintenance Minder alerts, service scheduling by phone, and access to the vehicle Owners Guide.

HondaLink Assist
An additional new feature on Pilot EX and above is HondaLink Assist9, which can help request emergency assistance for drivers. If a compatible phone is paired through Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®, there is a cellular connection and an airbag deployment sensor is triggered, the system is designed to automatically attempt to notify an operator, report the car's current location, and allow occupants to talk directly to the operator. The operator can then contact emergency services if needed.

Siri Eyes Free
Adding another new premium feature, Pilot EX and above integrate Apple's Siri Eyes Free mode. Compatible iPhone® users will be able to operate Siri through familiar voice commands by pressing and holding the TALK button on the steering wheel when their iPhone is paired via Bluetooth®. Using Eyes Free mode, Siri takes hands-free functionality even further and helps to minimize potential distractions by keeping the iOS device's screen from lighting up.

Owners can direct Siri to perform a number of specific tasks while they keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. Capabilities include:

  • Send text messages and e-mails
  • Read incoming text messages and emails
  • Set up calendar entries, reminders, and alarms
  • Check the weather
  • Turn-by-turn voice navigation (when the audio system is set to Bluetooth® Audio or iPod mode)
  • Sports scores and stock quotes

SMS Text Messaging
The Pilot EX and above trims have a standard SMS text message function that can read incoming texts aloud over the audio system, and allow the driver to reply with any of six factory preset messages. The system works with SMS-capable cell phones that have an active data plan and the Message Access Profile (MAP), such as the Blackberry, Droid X and others. Apple iPhone models do not support this feature, but Siri Eyes Free Mode (iPhone 5 and 6 at time of launch) offers the ability to initiate, hear and respond to text messages via voice commands.

Once a compatible phone is paired with the Pilot's Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system, the text messaging function is enabled. When the phone receives a text message, an alert appears on the audio touchscreen. Using the touchscreen, the driver can choose to have the message read aloud, can select among the preset reply choices, or can call the sender – all without touching the phone.

To help avoid driver distraction, the text of the incoming message is not displayed on screen unless the transmission is in Park.

Available factory preset text replies:

  • Talk to you later, I'm driving.
  • I'm on my way.
  • I'm running late.
  • OK
  • Yes
  • No

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®
The Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® interface is designed to offer hands-free operation for many Bluetooth®-enabled mobile telephones. Standard on all Pilot models, the system wirelessly connects the driver's cell phone to the vehicle's audio system. This allows the driver to make or answer cell phone calls without removing hands from the steering wheel. The system is compatible with Bluetooth®-enabled cell phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP). A list of compatible phones can be found at handsfreelink.com or honda.com.

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® enables audio files to be played through the vehicle's audio system wirelessly with a feature called Bluetooth® Audio. If an audio compatible device is paired it will be added as an auxiliary source on the audio screen. This allows the Bluetooth® device's media to be played wirelessly by the audio system. Cell phone devices that support the Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and Audio Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP) 1.3 allow the display of metadata for artist, album and track name on the audio screen. The vehicle's audio controls for "skip forward" and "skip backward" allow for navigation from track to track.

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® is designed for easy use. After the driver completes a simple one-time "pairing" process to link the cell phone with the vehicle, Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® can communicate wirelessly and securely with the driver's cell phone when the phone is within about 33 feet of the vehicle. Once the driver enters the vehicle, the phone can be stored in a pocket, briefcase, purse or a storage bin inside the vehicle's cabin as the call transfers information through the wireless telephone interface. Certain compatible cell phones can also transfer the cellular phonebook into the vehicle through the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system. After the cellular phonebook is transferred, calls can be made by making selections from the registered phonebook on the Pilot's display screen.

  • Pressing the steering wheel-mounted "Pick up" button answers the call and mutes the audio system
  • The caller is heard through the audio-system speakers
  • An overhead microphone picks up the driver's voice while minimizing background noise and echoing
  • Numbers with voice tags may be stored in the system's memory
  • To make a hands-free call, the driver first activates the system using the steering wheel-mounted fingertip controls, then speaks a preset voice tag
  • Numbers can also be dialed by speaking the telephone number
  • Automatic import of phone book and call history with compatible phones
  • Up to six different compatible mobile phones can be paired with the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system

Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with Voice Recognition and Honda HD Digital Traffic
Standard on the Pilot EX-L Navi, Touring and Elite, the integrated Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System uses GPS technology to provide drivers with turn-by-turn guidance to their chosen destination. This all-new navigation system, developed in cooperation with Garmin, offers many improvements, including enhanced graphics, live search, speed limit display, customized vehicle icons, 3D buildings and terrain, and more. The system includes free map database updates for up to 5 years (initial purchase plus one yearly update each year for 4 years). The system includes the HD Digital Traffic feature, which alerts the driver to current traffic conditions and can display alternate routes around gridlock. It features expanded coverage including many surface streets within the U.S., allowing the driver to choose faster, less congested routes. HD Digital Traffic is subscription-free.

The navigation system can be controlled by voice or through the 8-inch electrostatic touch-screen audio display utilizing its tap, pinch and swipe functionality. The voice-activation system can respond to more casual command phrases that require less user familiarization, in addition to the previous capability of being able to understand spoken city and street names. For example, a voice request for "Radio 98.3 FM" can now be spoken in approximately a dozen different ways ranging from "change the radio station to 98.3" to "98.3 FM." This logic applies to audio functionality of the audio/information screen. The navigation system can also be controlled by voice with conventional navigation commands like, "Find nearest Chinese restaurant" or "find nearest ATM."

The audio system is automatically muted when the "Talk" button is pressed. The voice-recognition technology allows the driver to simply speak city and street names aloud, and the system responds by displaying the matches available in the database. Points of interest on the map – such as restaurants or grocery stores – can be displayed with brand logo icons or you can have the system provide turn-by-turn navigation, all by voice command. The massive point-of-interest (POI) database includes telephone numbers that can be dialed by using the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® system when the driver's cellular telephone is connected to the system.

The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System uses GPS in combination with detailed information from the vehicle's mapping system to pinpoint the vehicle's location and to provide a host of useful mapping and route guidance features. The system's antenna receives positioning information from a network of 24 global positioning satellites. If the antenna is obstructed by a tunnel, a parking garage or a tall building, an internal gyroscopic system and a speed sensor track the location of the vehicle so that the map information remains current and reliable. The vehicle clock is independently controlled by GPS data, so when time zones are crossed while driving, the clock will automatically set itself to the current time.

Rear Entertainment System (EX-L RES, Touring and Elite)
The Pilot's state-of-the-art, factory-integrated Rear Entertainment System (RES) features a 9-inch wide VGA display that swings down from the ceiling for easy viewing with low glare, better second- and third-row viewing and reduced likelihood of motion sickness versus headrest-mounted units. The system includes a High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) port for attaching high-definition players, digital TV devices such as Apple TV or Roku, compatible tablets and certain gaming consoles, along with standard composite and audio inputs. A 115-volt power outlet rated for devices up to 150 watts is included, along with a pair of 2.5-watt USB ports. The system's disc player is located in the center stack of the instrument panel, easily accessible by either the driver or front passenger. In the Pilot EX-L RES, the system can play CDs and DVDs. In the Touring and Elite trims, the system can also play Blu-ray™ discs.

The Rear Entertainment System can play audio via the Pilot's speaker system, or through a pair of included wireless headphones. Two additional headphone jacks are also provided.

USB Ports and Power Outlets
In LX trims, 12-volt power outlet is positioned above the phone pocket at the base of the center stack, with another 12-volt power outlet, a 1.5-amp USB port and auxiliary jack positioned inside of the center console. EX and above trims retain the 12-volt power outlets, while the USB port in the console is upgraded to 2.5 amps, and 1.5-amp and 2.5-amp USB ports are added above the phone pocket at the base of the center stack and all allow connectivity with the vehicle's audio system, including audio display. Touring and Elite trims add a pair of 2.5-amp USB charging ports at the rear of the center console for use by the second-row passengers.

2 Always visually confirm that it is safe to drive before backing up; the rearview camera display does not provide complete information about all conditions and objects at the rear of your vehicle.

3 For optimal tire wear and performance, tire pressure should be checked regularly with a gauge. Do not rely solely on the monitor system. Please see your Honda dealer for details.
