Mo Nunn Racing returns to a one-car team in CART for 2002, concentrating their efforts on five year veteran Tony Kanaan.
Last year, in its second year of CART FedEx Championship Series competition, the team expanded to a two-car operation and added Honda power, with two-time series champion Alex Zanardi joining the returning Kanaan.
Kanaan put together a very consistent season, scoring championship points in 14 of his 19 starts, highlighted by a third place finish in Japan and qualifying on the pole at Chicago Motor Speedway.
Eleven other top-ten results included points-paying finishes at four of the five road courses on the circuit to further demonstrate the Brazilian's versatility. Kanaan returns to the team for 2002, but will now drive the #66 Pioneer/Worldcom car.
Although Zanardi suffered severe injuries in a crash at the new EuroSpeedway in Germany, the popular Italian has continued to make an amazing recovery. His season started slowly as the former single-car team adapted to its expansion. But by mid-season Zanardi was returning to his race-winning pace, finishing fourth on the streets of Toronto and fighting for the victory at EuroSpeedway at the time of his accident.
Following Zanardi's season-ending crash, rookie second-generation racer Casey Mears came on board to complete the season and scored championship points in two of those runs, highlighted by an eighth place finish at the California Speedway season finale.
