Franchitti Claims $2.75 Million Prize as Final Indy Results Posted

Dario Franchitti claimed a winner's check of just over $2.75 million Monday night in Indianapolis, part of a $13.6 million overall purse, while Marco Andretti was officially credited with a third-place finish with the posting of the final results for Sunday's 94th running of the Indianapolis 500.

Franchitti's second "500" victory also moved him to second in the Drivers' Championship, 11 points behind Will Power. The other three race winners this season - Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves and Ryan Hunter-Reay - round out the top five in the championship race after six of 17 races.

A review of the last-lap scoring data saw Andretti credited with a third-place finish, his position when a massive last-lap crash involving Mike Conway, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Ana Beatriz brought out the race-ending caution flag.

Following Andretti in the final results were fourth-place Alex Lloyd, 2008 winner Scott Dixon in fifth and Danica Patrick, sixth. The finishing positions of the remainder of the 33-car field were unchanged from Sunday's provisional results.

The Turn 3 crash on the final lap was triggered when Hunter-Reay's car suddenly slowed, apparently out of fuel. Conway, following close behind, was unable to avoid contact with Hunter-Reay's left rear wheel, sending Conway's Honda Dallara flipping into the safety barriers. Beatriz spun to the inside in an attempt to avoid contact, and came to rest against the inside retaining wall. She was uninjured in the crash.

Conway will be out of action for at least three months as he recovers from a back injury and fractures to his left leg. Hunter-Reay was apparently unhurt in the collision, but injured his left thumb earlier in the race in a pit-lane collision with Will Power. He underwent surgery Monday in Indianapolis to repair the damage, and is expected to be racing this weekend in Texas with a carbon-fiber splint.

One of a record-four women racers at Indianapolis this year, Simona de Silvestro was named Rookie of the Year by a vote of the media after qualifying 22nd and finishing 14th in her first "500".

Sunday's race marked Honda's 100th IndyCar Series victory, both in competition with other manufacturers from 2003-05 and as single supplier to the series since 2006. For the fifth consecutive year, Honda powered the entire 33-car Indianapolis 500 starting field, and for a record-extending fifth consecutive season - and the only five times in Indy 500 history - there was not a single engine failure in the "500".

The IZOD IndyCar Series continues its run of oval races this weekend, moving to the high banks of the 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth for the Firestone Indy 550k on Saturday night, June 5.

IZOD IndyCar Series Championship (after 6 of 17 races):

Simona de Silvestro (#78 HVM Racing Honda) Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year: "This was the craziest race I have ever run. I am happy with our finish and honored to have competed in this truly historic race. I am extremely proud and grateful for the Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing team, everyone worked so hard this month. But now my thoughts are on Texas and I'm looking forward to our night race there!"
