Honda Rearview Report: February 8 - February 14, 2014

"This week Honda released Never Ending Race, a short film that tells the story of how Honda engineers applied their racing spirit to advance low-emissions vehicle technology that helped overcome the challenge of air pollution.

It was an honor to be interviewed for this film. In reality, my own part in this story was very, very small, but I had the chance to represent the hundreds and thousands of associates whose roles – large and small, in R&D, manufacturing and sales – all contributed towards the important success that this film recognizes.

For someone who grew up in Los Angeles in the 1960s and early 70s, as I did, this is a real sea change. I clearly recall the strangely brown skies, the burning sensation in your eyes and lungs – everyone complained. And I was especially hit hard because I have asthma, so I, like so many with respiratory issues, was hit especially hard. Fast forward to today and Los Angeles has not had a single stage-1 smog alert in eight years despite a steady increase in population, cars and driving!

We continue to seek advancements in low-emissions technology, but today our focus is on the race to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through increased fuel efficiency and the advancement of vehicles that use lower carbon alternatives to petroleum.

I encourage you to take four minutes to watch "Never Ending Race" and know that Honda's racing spirit is alive and well — with innovative products and technologies, and a compelling vision that puts society on the path to a more sustainable transportation future."
