Statement by American Honda Regarding Fuel Tank Seam Recall: 2016 Honda Pilot

  • 136 Pilot vehicles affected
  • Fuel tanks will be replaced, free of charge
  • Only one fuel leak has been reported by a customer related to this issue with no reports of injuries or fires

Honda will voluntarily recall 136 model-year 2016 Pilot vehicles in the United States to replace fuel tanks that may develop leaks, free of charge. Honda has only received one customer report of a fuel leak related to this issue, with no reports of related injuries or fires.

Due to an improper manufacturing process, incorrect material was used to form the fuel tanks installed in these vehicles, resulting in insufficient bonding. Over time, vibration and heat cycling can cause separation within the fuel tank walls, allowing for fuel or fuel vapor leakage. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of a fire.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage owners of affected vehicles to take them to an authorized dealer as soon as possible for repair. Due to the relatively small number of affected vehicles, where possible, Honda is currently attempting to contact owners of affected vehicles by phone to schedule repairs. Owners of 2016 Pilots can also determine if their vehicles require repair by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138. Mailed notification to owners of any remaining unrepaired vehicles will occur in late-April 2017.
