2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Press Kit - Overview

The Accord Hybrid is the latest model in the completely redesigned ninth-generation Accord lineup, Honda's best-selling model in America. The addition of the Accord Hybrid, which follows the September 2012 launch of the Accord Sedan and Accord Coupe (with 4-cylinder and V-6 powertrains) and the January 2013 launch of the Accord Plug-In, further broadens what is already the most diverse range of models and powertrain options in the history of Accord and in the hotly competitive U.S. midsize sedan market.

The all-new Accord Hybrid, manufactured by Honda of America Mfg., Inc. in Marysville, Ohio, joins the Indiana-made Civic Hybrid as the second Honda-brand hybrid vehicle to be produced in America1. Utilizing the same Earth Dreams Technology™ powertrain architecture as the Accord Plug-In, Honda's first two-motor hybrid powertrain, the Accord Hybrid is designed to deliver outstanding fuel efficiency and fun-to-drive performance, and at 50 miles per gallon2 it delivers the highest EPA city fuel-economy rating of any four door sedan.

Utilizing the same fundamental body and chassis architecture as the standard (non-hybrid) Accord Sedan, including its highly aerodynamic and lightweight body, sophisticated suspension design and outstanding interior package, the 2014 Accord Hybrid also delivers on the new-generation Accord's promise to excel in all areas. These areas include not only fuel efficiency and driving performance but also class-leading passenger comfort and ergonomics; top-level safety and driver-assistive systems with features such as Honda's next-generation ACE™ body structure, available Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning and LaneWatch (standard); and leading-edge connectivity via the new HondaLink® connected car technology.

The Accord Hybrid's two-motor hybrid system, part of an expanding lineup of Honda Earth Dreams Technology™ powertrains, seamlessly blends electric-only, hybrid and engine drive modes along with powerful regenerative braking to provide responsive and efficient performance in a wide range of driving situations. Fuel efficiency is further aided by a number of features exclusive to the Accord Hybrid and Accord Plug-In. These include an all-aluminum front subframe, which replaces the steel-and-aluminum subframe used on the conventional Accord Sedan and Coupe models, and an aluminum rear bumper beam, which helps offset the additional weight of the rear-mounted battery pack while also improving front-to-rear weight balance.

The 2014 Accord Hybrid further advances Honda's commitment to gasoline-electric hybrid powertrains as a critical technology for reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from its automobile products.  Honda introduced America's first hybrid automobile, the first-generation Insight, in December 1999; the first hybrid version of an existing mass-market vehicle, the Civic Hybrid, in 2002; the world's first mass-produced V-6 hybrid car, the first-generation Accord Hybrid, in 2004; the world's most affordable hybrid car, the second-generation Insight, in 2009; and the first affordable sporty hybrid car, the CR-Z, in 2010.

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Press Kit - Powertrain

Overview

For the ninth-generation Accord, Honda offers the widest range of power trains in the model's history. Two Earth Dreams Technology™ engines were initially available in the completely redesigned 2013 Accord family - an all-new direct-injected (DI) 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine, and a significantly updated 3.5-liter V-6 with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM). (Please see the 2013 Honda Accord Press Kit for more information.) Then, in early 2013, the all-new 2014 Honda Accord Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) Sedan with an Earth Dreams Technology™ 2.0-liter 4-cylinder/two-motor plug-in hybrid powertrain also joined the lineup.

The Accord Plug-In Hybrid and the Accord Hybrid have a completely new hybrid system for midsize vehicles that is an altogether different hybrid from Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system. The Accord Plug-In Hybrid and the Accord Hybrid have a new system called Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD). Under most conditions the gas engine powers a generator, which in turn provides energy to charge the hybrid battery and/or for the electric motor to drive the wheels. In addition, the i-MMD can operate on gasoline engine power only, mainly during medium- to high-speed cruising.

Honda's i-MMD uses a new two-motor hybrid approach that continuously cycles between three different modes - EV drive, hybrid drive and engine drive - to maximize fuel efficiency. The key difference between the Accord Plug-In and Accord Hybrid is the size of the onboard battery, and the presence of an onboard charging system and cord in the case of the Plug-in Hybrid. The Accord Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) uses a 6.7 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery and charging cord that allows recharging in less than three hours using a 120-volt outlet and less than one hour using a Level-2 (240-volt) charger.

The new Accord Hybrid is a non plug-in vehicle, and has a smaller, more compact 1.3 kilowatt-hour (kWh) lithium-ion battery that is charged via the vehicle's 2.0-liter gasoline engine, regenerative braking, or a combination of the two. The result of the Accord Hybrid's cutting-edge powertrain technology is a fun-to-drive character, coupled with anunmatched city fuel-economy rating. The Accord Hybrid has EPA fuel economy ratings of 50/45/47 mpg city/highway/combined 2 that gives it the best-in-class city rating for four door sedans, and ties it for best-in-class in the combined rating.

(For more detail on Accord engine features, please see the 2013 Accord Press Kit.)

High-efficiency Earth Dreams Technology™ Two-Motor Hybrid System
Honda's hybrid technology has progressed substantially since the introduction of the first gas-electric hybrid to the U.S. market in 1999, Honda's original Insight. Today, the Accord Hybrid is a standard-bearer of Honda's environmental leadership efforts.

The Accord Hybrid's i-MMD system is a highly efficient powertrain that selects the optimal drive mode under a wide range of driving conditions to combine a fun-to-drive character with excellent fuel efficiency. Detailed energy management for each component enables this system to make the best use of both the electric propulsion motor and the gasoline engine to seamlessly provide smooth and responsive performance and a best-in-class (four door sedan) city fuel-economy rating.

To help maximize efficiency on the road, the Accord Hybrid seamlessly shifts between three distinct drive modes: EV Drive (100 percent electric motor), Hybrid Drive (electric motor and gasoline engine [driving the generator motor]) and Engine Drive (gasoline engine). The Accord Hybrid's powertrain shifts seamlessly and smoothly among the three driving modes, utilizing power from the i-VTEC® 4-cylinder engine and the electric motor to suit the driving conditions moment to moment.

EV Drive Mode
All-electric drive EV Drive Mode is active when starting from a stop, during light cruising and acceleration, and when braking. The gasoline engine is off in this mode and is decoupled from the drivetrain to reduce friction.

Hybrid Drive Mode
The electric motor and gasoline engine work together when accelerating and at higher speeds. The electric propulsion motor alone powers the front wheels, as the gasoline engine (decoupled from the drive wheels) powers the electric-generator motor, which in turn provides power to the battery pack. This allows the gas engine-generator motor combo to supplement the battery by providing added electrical power to the propulsion motor or, alternatively, to charge the battery. The electric propulsion motor offers crisp acceleration, and can reach maximum torque almost instantaneously, thanks to electrical power that can be supplied from both the gas engine-powered motor/generator and the battery.

Engine Drive Mode
When cruising at medium to high speeds, the high-efficiency Atkinson-cycle i-VTEC gasoline engine provides propulsion via the E-CVT with lock-up clutch, which connects the generator motor (always linked to the engine) and the electric drive motor, effectively sending motive power directly from the engine to the drive wheels..

2.0-liter Inline 4-cylinder Atkinson Cycle Engine An all-new 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC 4-cylinder Atkinson Cycle engine that develops a peak 141 horsepower and 122 lb-ft. of torque powers both the Accord Hybrid and the Accord Plug-in Hybrid. It is one of the world’s most thermally efficient powerplants and is a key part of Honda’s expanding Earth Dreams Technology™ powertrain lineup, which is comprised of a next-generation set of technological advancements that greatly enhance both driving performance and fuel efficiency. In fact, at 214 g/kWh of 87-octane gasoline fuel, this engine is the most energy efficient mass produced gasoline internal combustion engine available in the world, based on internal testing.

The engine’s Atkinson Cycle design and other technologies combine to create excellent power characteristics, exceptional fuel efficiency and very low exhaust emissions. This clean-running engine meets LEV3- AT-PZEV(SULEV30)/ BIN3 emission standards. The gasoline engine produces a maximum 141 horsepower at 6200 rpm; while the Accord Hybrid’s total system output (peak horsepower of both the gas engine and the two-motor hybrid-drive system) is 196 hp. The Accord Hybrid Sedan has an EPA fuel-economy rating of 50/45/47 mpg city/hwy/combined.2

Since the gasoline engine can be decoupled from the rest of the hybrid powertrain, it only operates as needed. Depending on the state of battery charge and other parameters, it will automatically shut off during deceleration and when the vehicle is at a stop or operating under battery power. When needed, the gasoline engine restarts automatically, without action from the driver.

Engine Block, Crankshaft and Pistons
The engine has a displacement of 1993cc. Cast-in iron cylinder liners provide long-lasting durability. Each journal on the forged-steel crankshaft is micro-polished to reduce internal friction. To improve smoothness throughout the rpm range and help lower noise levels, the Accord Hybrid is fitted with an internal balancer unit. Consisting of a pair of chain-driven counter-rotating shafts located in the oil pan, the balancing system helps quell the inherent second-order harmonic vibrations that are normally associated with inline 4-cylinder engines.

Like the 2.4-liter engine that powers the non-hybrid Accord Sedan and Coupe, the 2.0-liter hybrid engine has cylinder bores offset by 8.0 mm from the crankshaft to help reduce piston-sliding friction. This gives the connecting rods a more favorable angle during each power stroke, which reduces side loading on the pistons and, in turn, improves efficiency.

The lightweight pistons have a carefully optimized skirt design to minimize reciprocating weight, and reduced weight minimizes vibration and increases operating efficiency.

Cylinder Head and Valvetrain
The Accord Hybrid 4-cylinder engine has a lightweight cylinder head that is made of pressure-cast aluminum alloy. A silent chain drives dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. The cam drive is maintenance free throughout the life of the engine.

To help boost fuel efficiency and power, the engine has a 3.4-degree included angle between the intake and exhaust valves. The narrow valve angle decreases the surface-to-volume ratio and helps create a flatter, more compact combustion chamber that reduces unburned hydrocarbon emissions. This combustion chamber shape and the precise control allows the compression ratio to be a high 13.0:1 (up from 11.0:1 on the 2.4-liter non-hybrid Accord engine), yet the engine still operates on regular unleaded fuel.

i-VTEC Valve Control System
The Accord Hybrid's 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve i-VTEC engine uses an advanced valve-control system to combine high power output with high fuel efficiency and low emissions. The system combines E-VTC (Electronic Variable Timing Control), which continuously adjusts the intake camshaft phase, with Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC), which changes the lift profile, timing and duration of the intake valves' operation.

High-Efficiency Catalytic Converters
Key contributors to the Accord 4-cylinder engine's excellent emissions performance are its dual high-efficiency catalytic converters. One converter mounts directly to the front of the cylinder head, close-coupled for fast activation after the engine is started. A second converter is positioned slightly downstream, beneath the passenger compartment floor. Both converters use a thin-wall design that increases internal reaction area and improves efficiency. A high-efficiency exhaust system and high-density catalytic converters help the Accord engine meet stringent LEV3- AT-PZEV(SULEV30)/ BIN3 standards, which require reduced greenhouse gases compared to lower standards.

Electric Motors
The Accord Hybrid (like the Accord Plug-in Hybrid) uses two electric motors. The 124 kW AC synchronous permanent-magnet propulsion motor, linked to the drive wheels, provides primary motive power for the vehicle. When in regenerative mode, the propulsion motor converts the kinetic energy of the decelerating vehicle into electrical energy to recharge the battery. Its operation is seamlessly coordinated with the Accord Hybrid's electric-servo braking system. (See Chassis section for more information.) A separate generator motor is driven by the gasoline engine to generate electric energy to drive the propulsion motor when the vehicle is operating in Hybrid Drive Mode. This generator motor can also restart the gasoline engine when the vehicle is in idle-stop mode.

Lithium-Ion Hybrid Battery

  • The Accord Hybrid's integrated Power unit (IPU), located behind the rear seat, packages a 1.3 kWh Li-Ion battery and a DC-DC converter. The Li-Ion battery type offers high energy density, allowing the compact and lightweight battery to be positioned behind the Accord Hybrid's fixed rear seatback. Battery temperature is controlled by a fan system that pulls air from the interior of the vehicle via vents on the driver's side of the rear seatback. The battery powers the Accord Hybrid's electric propulsion motor. It is recharged by the propulsion motor operating in regenerative braking mode, and by the generator motor, which is powered by the gasoline engine. The battery pack is covered by a special warranty that covers defects in material and workmanship for eight-years/100,000-miles or ten-year/150,000 miles depending on the state of purchase/registration.

Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT)
The Accord Hybrid is not equipped with a conventional physical transmission. Instead, the Electric Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT) consists of the interaction of the Accord Hybrid's gasoline engine and two electric motors. Coordinated by the IPU, the E-CVT offers smooth and predictable acceleration matched with efficient low-rpm highway cruising when the gasoline engine is in operation. Gasoline engine shutdown is seamlessly integrated into the operation of the Accord Hybrid when appropriate.

The E-CVT system, unlike other full hybrid systems, operates without the need for a torque converter, mechanical pulley or belt. It instead uses two motors for driving and generating power. Unlike a conventional CVT, E-CVT is optimally and rapidly able to control both engine and electric motor rotation in order to deliver higher fuel efficiency and quicker engine response in each driving mode.

When cruising at mid- or high-speeds in the high-efficiency range of the engine, the lock-up clutch built into the E-CVT is engaged, connecting the drive motor to the generator motor to transmit engine torque directly to the drive wheels as efficiently as possible. In EV Drive mode, when the battery-powered drive motor is used for either acceleration or regenerative braking, a clutch disengages the stopped gasoline engine from the drivetrain to eliminate efficiency loss from mechanical friction in the engine.

E-CVT Automatic Modes
The transmission, with its console-mounted straight-gate shifter, can be operated in two different fully automatic modes. The D mode is ideal for most driving situations, and combines fuel efficiency with smooth operation and responsive power when needed. The B (Brake) mode offers substantially increased regenerative braking.

EV Button
Immediately behind the shifter is an EV button that lets the driver select purely electric operation. A green EV icon lights on the instrument panel in this mode. When the battery charge is sufficiently depleted, EV Mode is automatically cancelled and the gasoline engine will automatically restart to recharge the battery in Hybrid Drive Mode or Engine Mode.

Electric Engine Accessories
The Accord Hybrid's engine accessories operate electrically, both for maximum efficiency and to allow their operation whether the gasoline engine is running or not. The air conditioning compressor and water pump are both powered by the electrical system. In addition, the Accord Hybrid has Electric Power Steering (EPS), which eliminates the traditional hydraulic power steering pump and its associated maintenance and energy costs. 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Press Kit - Body

Overview

Based on the award-winning ninth-generation Accord Sedan, the 2014 Accord Hybrid Sedan combines crisp styling and aerodynamic efficiency with a high degree of practicality and extraordinary structural strength. At 192.2 inches in length, the Accord Hybrid is just fractionally longer than the Accord Sedan (191.4) inches due to the addition of a trunk lid spoiler; it is also fractionally lower with an overall height of 57.5 inches, compared to 57.7 inches for the Accord Sedan.

Numerous styling accents distinguish the Accord Hybrid from the gasoline Accord Sedan. In front, the list includes a blue-accented upper grille that uniquely defines the Accord Hybrid, along with evocative blue-accented headlights (energy-efficient LED on the Accord Hybrid Touring) and bright LED daytime running lights (DRLs). 17-inch alloy wheels, all-season tires and special Hybrid badges on the front fenders characterize the Accord Hybrid's side profile.

The rearview of the Accord Hybrid is equally distinctive, with an additional Hybrid badge on the trunk lid, dramatic blue-accented LED taillights, and a trunk lid spoiler that helps air separate cleanly from the back of the vehicle, thus reducing aerodynamic drag. The lower rear fascia also has a unique diffuser for additional aerodynamic efficiency. The Accord Hybrid EX-L and Touring are equipped with a one-touch power moonroof.

Smart Entry & Push Button Start/Stop
The Accord Hybrid has a Smart Entry & Push Button Start/Stop system similar to that found on the Accord EX, EX-L and Touring models. The system simplifies approaching, entering and operating the Accord Hybrid - especially when the driver is carrying items. Operating the system requires only that the driver has possession of the Smart Entry key.

Smart Entry allows the Accord Hybrid owner to gain access to the vehicle without having to unlock it with the remote transmitter or the key. Instead, the remote has a unique digital identity that is recognized by the vehicle when the driver approaches. At this point, to enter the vehicle the driver simply pulls one of the front door handles while the remote in his or her possession. Similarly, pressing a soft-touch button located on the rear fascia opens the trunk.

Once the driver has opened the door and is seated, the Push Button Start system allows the Accord Hybrid to be driven by pushing the START/STOP button positioned on the instrument panel. Powertrain operation and certain electrical functions are ended when the START/STOP button is pressed again at the conclusion of the drive.

After parking the vehicle, a touch of the soft-touch lock button on either front door handle locks all doors and trunk to secure the car. Alternatively, a press of the LOCK button on the Smart Entry remote will also simultaneously lock all the doors and trunk. The Smart Entry system will not allow the transmitter fob to be locked in the interior or the trunk.

One-Touch Open/Close Power Moonroof
Like the gasoline Accord EX, EX-L and Touring models, the Accord Hybrid EX-L and Touring models have a power glass moonroof with tilt feature, along with one-touch control for both open and close functions. An auto-reverse feature reverses direction of the sliding moonroof panel if the operating system detects resistance to closing. A manually operated sliding sunshade improves comfort on bright or hot days.

Heated Driver's Mirror
Body-colored power side mirrors allow the driver to adjust the mirrors position with ease. In addition, the driver's side mirror is heated for all-weather driving convenience, while the passenger-side mirror includes an integrated Honda LaneWatch™ camera. (See Safety and Driver-Assistive Technologies section for more information.)

The mirrors were specifically designed for low aerodynamic drag to improve fuel efficiency while reducing wind noise. LED turn signal indicators are integrated into the side mirror housings for added visibility in traffic. They can also be manually folded inward for tight parking spaces, if desired.

17-inch Aluminum Alloy Wheels
The Accord Hybrid comes with 17 x 7½ J aluminum alloy wheels (the same size as the gasoline Accord EX and EX-L Sedan wheels) with a unique design featuring five paired spokes and a painted metallic finish. The wheel and tire size optimizes ride and handling qualities, while also reducing rolling resistance for improved fuel efficiency. Aerodynamically shaped spokes also help improve overall efficiency.

Low Rolling Resistance Tires
Reducing the aerodynamic drag and rolling resistance of tires is an essential part of attaining better fuel efficiency for any vehicle. The Accord Hybrid uses proprietary P225/50R17 tires - slightly wider than the top-of-the-line gasoline Accord Touring Sedan's P215/55R17 tires - that offer the best balance between all-season grip, low drag and low rolling resistance. The tires excel at providing accurate steering feel, a quiet and comfortable ride experience, and long wear. They are also M+S rated for all-season drivability.

Tire Sealant and Inflator Kit
To save weight, in lieu of a spare tire, the Accord Hybrid comes with an easy-to-use tire sealant and inflator kit that simplifies temporary repairs in the event of a flat tire. An identical strategy is used in the Civic Hybrid, Civic HF and CR-Z. Stored beneath the cargo area floor panel, the tire sealant and inflator kit also helps maximize the EPA cargo volume at 12.7 cu. ft. (12.3 cu. ft. on EX-L and Touring models).

In the event of a small tread puncture of no more than 3/16 inch, use of the tire repair and inflation kit allows the car to be driven to the nearest service station for a more permanent repair. For larger punctures, roadside assistance must be called, and the Accord Hybrid comes with 24-hour roadside assistance for the duration of the new-vehicle limited warranty.

Auto-Up/Down Driver and Passenger's Windows
Like every other current Accord model, the Accord Hybrid has front and rear power windows with a one-touch auto-up/down driver's window. However the Accord Hybrid also has auto-up/down capability for the front passenger's window, a feature only found on gasoline Accord EX and above trim levels. Illuminated controls allow for easy operation at night.

Weight Reduction
Since moving the mass of any vehicle requires energy, overall fuel efficiency can be improved by reducing its weight. Reducing vehicle weight must be balanced with other factors such as structural integrity; ride and handling characteristics; low noise, vibration and harshness (NVH); and passenger safety.

In the Accord Hybrid, weight reductions include an new all-aluminum front subframe that replaces the steel-and-aluminum front subframe of the gasoline Accord. Created from a combination of die-cast and stamped aluminum components, this subframe saves 8.8 pounds compared to the steel-and-aluminum unit. Other lightweight components in the Accord Hybrid include an aluminum rear bumper beam and aluminum brake pedal.

Exterior Colors
The Accord Hybrid is available in eight exterior colors derived from the Accord Sedan palette, including Alabaster Silver Metallic, Modern Steel Metallic and Hematite Metallic, Basque Red Pearl, Champagne Frost Pearl, Crystal Black Pearl, Obsidian Blue Pearl and White Orchid Pearl.

Electric Power-Assisted Rack-and-Pinion Steering (EPS)
Electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering (EPS) allows the Accord Hybrid to operate in electric-drive mode with the same responsiveness, feel and precision as in gasoline-engine drive mode. The system uses a rack-and-pinion steering assembly with an electrically assisted steering rack. This energy-efficient system reduces steering effort while also contributing to the Accord Hybrid's increased fuel efficiency. Other EPS benefits include a more sophisticated, linear, solid and accurate steering feel, more nimble handling and improved highway stability.

Amplitude Reactive Dampers
Using two separate damping systems, Amplitude Reactive Dampers provide superior ride comfort and handling in all driving conditions. One damping system is tuned to provide maximum efficiency on smoother roads with small inputs, and the other is tuned to handle large inputs such as rough roads, potholes, and sudden steering and braking action. The result is that the Accord Hybrid remains composed and comfortable in a wide range of driving conditions.

The Amplitude Reactive Dampers are a purely mechanical system that does not require electronic controls. Their core technology includes two separate damping pistons - a main piston and a secondary piston. To improve overall ride comfort, when smaller inputs occur during normal driving conditions, such as minor road irregularities, only the main piston works to provide the ideal damping characteristics. To improve ride and handling during more severe conditions, a second piston also operates to provide additional damping force. In short, one damping system is for low-speed, low-amplitude suspension response and one is for high-speed, high-amplitude response.

The Accord Hybrid features wider diameter anti-roll bars than on the Accord Sedan, helping to trim body roll to a preferred level during all types of cornering and handling maneuvers. The Accord Hybrid has 19-mm front and 16-mm rear stabilizer bars.

Electric Servo Brake System
The Accord Hybrid's electric servo brake system maximizes regenerative braking capability for improved fuel efficiency. The braking system is fully hydraulic from the master cylinder all the way to the 4-wheel disc brakes, just like a traditional braking system. The key difference is that the braking function is electronically controlled rather than a purely mechanical activation, allowing regenerative braking from the electric drive motor to slow the vehicle, rather than the hydraulic friction brakes under most circumstances. Besides its payoff in efficiency, the system offers excellent feel and feedback for the driver through the brake pedal.

When the driver applies the brake pedal, a signal is sent to the vehicle's Electronic Control Unit (ECU), which determines the appropriate amount of braking force to assign to regenerative braking through the electric drive motor and to the hydraulic friction braking system. In many cases, friction braking is not needed until the vehicle speed drops below 5 mph, as the vehicle slows to a final stop. When the ECU determines that friction braking is needed, the dual hydraulic master cylinder pumps brake fluid through the system. Midway between the master cylinder and the calipers is a separate motorized electronic actuator. This actuator receives an electronic signal, generated in the master cylinder module that precisely defines how the driver has applied the brakes - soft or hard, slow or fast. The actuator then directly apportions hydraulic pressure to the brake calipers at each wheel.

While the gasoline Accord uses a 10-inch vacuum booster to assist the driver in applying needed brake pressure, the Accord Hybrid uses an electric servo brake actuator. The vented front brake rotors are 11.5 inches in diameter, while the rear discs are 11.1 inches - the same as the Accord Sedan. The front calipers have two pistons each and the rear calipers have one piston each.

Regenerative Braking
The new electric servo brake system yields a 8-percent improvement in regenerative braking effect compared to Honda's Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid system, along with improved brake control - particularly when the brakes are first applied and also as the vehicle comes to a stop.

Regenerative braking begins as soon as the driver releases the throttle pedal, with a strong regenerative braking effect beginning when the brake pedal is depressed and continuing until the point that the vehicle speed drops below 1 mph, when the friction brakes fully engage. The result is to maximize battery recharging during normal driving - while still maintaining top levels of braking precision and driving enjoyment.

2014 Honda Accord Hybrid Press Kit - Interior

Overview

The Accord Hybrid shares much of its interior design with the current-generation Accord EX sedan, which made its debut as a 2013 model. This new generation reflects a level of luxury and craftsmanship never before seen in the Accord and combines welcoming comfort with an impressive new range of standard and available technologies. Best-in-class interior volume, redesigned seating and features such as dual-zone climate control enhance passenger comfort inside the cabin, and the controls and instrumentation have been simplified for more intuitive control. The Accord Hybrid interior is distinguished by a black steering wheel garnish and unique hybrid instrumentation.

In other respects, the Accord Hybrid interior is identical to other Accord models. A bright, full-color 8-inch (diagonal) "intelligent" Multi-Information Display (i-MID) serves as the control center for many electronic functions. The i-MID screen displays the image from the standard backup camera, fuel efficiency information, audio functions, and LaneWatch™ feature, which can help drivers on busy multi-lane roads by displaying a wide-angle view of the roadway on the passenger side of the vehicle.

A new audio system with touchscreen is standard in EX-L and Touring grades and features a Pandora® interface, and a convenient SMS text messaging5 function that can read incoming texts aloud and allow the driver to respond with factory preset text messages. A Bluetooth®6 HandsFreeLink® phone interface adds intuitive hands-free calling convenience. The Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System™ with Voice Recognition and FM Traffic is available. The available HondaLink™ technology works with the owner's compatible smartphone to connect the Accord Hybrid with music and other media sources, internet apps, roadside assistance and more to help improve the driving experience.

As with the conventionally powered Accord, the Accord Hybrid EX-L and Touring have Forward Collision Warning (FCW) systems to advise the driver when the system determines a collision with a vehicle detected ahead potentially exists. The Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system will alert the driver with audio and visual alerts if the driver begins to move out of a detected lane without using the turn signals. The line-topping Accord Hybrid Touring features Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which can regulate the Accord Hybrid's speed to maintain a pre-set following interval between it and a vehicle detected directly ahead.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™)
The Accord Hybrid utilizes the next-generation version of Honda's proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure technology to enhance occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions. ACE utilizes a network of connected structural elements – with an improved design and a greater use of high-tensile steel – to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash. ACE also helps minimize the potential for under-ride or over-ride situations that can happen during head-on or offset frontal impacts with a larger or smaller vehicle.

Unlike most conventional designs that direct frontal crash energy only to the lower load-bearing structures in the front end, ACE actively channels frontal crash energy to both upper and lower structural elements, including the floor frame rails, side sills and A-pillars. By creating specifically engineered "pathways" that help distribute these frontal impact forces through a greater percentage of the vehicle's total structure, ACE can more effectively direct those forces around and away from the passenger compartment to help limit cabin deformation and further improve occupant protection. And like other Honda models, the Accord Hybrid has an impact-absorbing front body design to help attenuate energy in the event of a frontal collision with a pedestrian.

Driver and Front Passenger SmartVent™ Side Airbags
Side airbags mounted in the outboard area of each front seatback are designed to help provide pelvic and thorax protection for the drive and front passenger in the event of a severe side impact. In the Accord Hybrid, a revised side airbag design allows the side airbags to deploy in a manner that mitigates the risk of injury to a smaller seat occupant. This advancement eliminates the need for the previous-generation gasoline Accord's passenger side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS).

Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
Included on the Accord Hybrid EX-L and Touring models, the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) system uses a camera mounted in the upper portion of the windshield to detect a vehicle ahead. Audible and visuals warnings alert the driver when the system determines that a collision with a detected vehicle is likely. Intended as a warning system only, FCW will not automatically activate the Accord Hybrid brakes, and the driver remains responsible for safely operating the vehicle and avoiding collisions.

Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
Included on the Accord Hybrid EX-L and Touring models, Lane Departure Warning (LDW) uses the same upper front windshield camera as FCW to visually read the lane lines on the road. If the driver begins to drift out of a detected lane without using the turn signal, the system will alert the driver with a visual "LANE" warning in the MID panel, along with an audible warning. LDW is intended as a warning system only and the driver remains responsible for safely operating the vehicle and avoiding collisions. A button on the lower left portion of the instrument panel allows the system to be switched on and off.

LaneWatch™ Blind Spot Display
The Accord Hybrid's standard LaneWatch™ blind spot display uses a camera positioned below the passenger-side exterior mirror to display a wide-angle view of the passenger side roadway on the intelligent Multi-Information Display (i-MID). The image appears when the right turn signal is activated, or when a button on the end of the turn signal stalk is pressed.

The typical field of view for a passenger-side mirror is approximately 18 to 22 degrees, but the LaneWatch™ blind spot display field-of-view is about four times greater, or approximately 80 degrees. The system helps the driver to see traffic, as well as pedestrians or objects, in the vehicle's blind spot. To help make judging distance easier, the display has three reference lines. Drivers should visually confirm roadway conditions prior to changing lanes.

On the navigation-equipped Accord Hybrid Touring, when LaneWatch™ is in use and a navigation turn prompt is needed, the image changes to split-screen so that LaneWatch™ and navigation information can be displayed simultaneously. LaneWatch™ can also be customized to suit the driver's preferences. Turn-signal activation of the LaneWatch™ system can be turned on or off, as can the three on-screen reference lines. Screen brightness, contrast and black level are also adjustable.

Manufacturing

The Accord Hybrid is the first hybrid vehicle to be produced by Honda of America Mfg., Inc., in Ohio. Built at Honda's Marysville Auto Plant, the Accord Hybrid is an addition to existing production of the Accord Sedan and Coupe. The Marysville Auto Plant has undergone significant changes, including a $23 million, 95,000-square-foot physical expansion and 50 new full-time jobs, in order to accommodate production of the new Accord Hybrid.

Warranty

The Accord Hybrid is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile Limited Vehicle Warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, and a 5-year/unlimited-mile Corrosion Limited Warranty. The hybrid battery pack is covered by a special warranty that covers defects in material and workmanship for eight-years/100,000-miles or ten-year/150,000 miles depending on the state of purchase/registration.

Honda Environmental Leadership

Honda is a leader in developing numerous leading-edge technologies to improve fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. In 2006, Honda became the first automaker to announce voluntary CO2 emissions reduction targets for its global fleet of automobile, powersports and power equipment products and its global network of manufacturing plants. Today, the company is striving for even greater reductions in CO2 emissions that contribute to global climate change, while also working to minimize waste, water use and the total environmental footprint of its operations worldwide.
