Acura Introduces 1992 Integra GS-R

The Acura Division of American Honda Motor Co., Inc., today introduced a new, high-performance sports sedan: the Integra GS-R. Building on the strengths of the second-generation 3-door Integra, the GS-R features an all-new, 1.7-liter, 16-valve, 160-horsepower engine. Using technology previously available only in the Acura NSX exotic sports car, the Integra GS-R uses a computer-controlled Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system to produce more power per liter than any other normally aspirated engine sold in the United States. The Integra GS-R also features 4-wheel disc brakes, an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and 4-wheel independent double-wishbone suspension.

The all-aluminum, 1678 cc, inline 4-cylinder engine uses a dual overhead camshaft, 4-valve-per-cylinder design. The GS-R engine produces 160-horsepower at 7600 rpm. Torque output is 117lbs.-ft. at 7000 rpm, and redline is 8000 rpm. The engine includes Formula One racing-derived features such as a micro-polished crankshaft and an oil jet system to cool the undersides of the piston crowns.

The GS-R engine features a Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FD system which monitors seven vital operating parameters and adjusts fuel delivery for optimum performance and efficiency.

The Integra GS-R is available exclusively with a close ratio 5-speed manual transmission, featuring a dual-cone synchronizer for second gear and a synchromesh reverse gear.

The fully independent double-wishbone suspension offers a precise balance of performance and comfort. The front suspension is an upper and lower control arm design with coil springs over advanced damper units; anti-dive geometry improves stability during braking. The rear suspension is an upper and lower control arm design with coil springs over damper units and also features a trailing arm for positive fore/aft location.

The rear geometry is designed to keep the tires more perpendicular to the road under dynamic conditions, which helps improve cornering.

The second-generation Integra was designed from the start with the performance potential of tile GS-R VTEC engine in mind. Accordingly, the sophisticated unitbody structure, suspension, steering and braking systems of the GS-R are essentially identical to those of the Integra GS.

The Integra GS-R features a powerful, 4-wheel disc braking system, with 10.3-inch internally ventilated discs at the front and 9.4-inch solid discs at the rear. The GS-R is equipped with a Honda R&D-designed Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) to help provide- effective steering control during hard braking.

The Integra GS-R is equipped with high-performance All Season Michelin XGT-V4 P195/60 R14 85V tires, for a balance of dry-road cornering grip and effective traction in inclement weather conditions.

Directional control is accomplished by a speed-sensitive, variable powerassisted, rack-and-pinion steering system. Sensors monitor road speed and automatically modulate the amount of power assist.

The Integra GS-R interior is distinguished by full moquette upholstery with red accents. Large, easy-to-read analog dials and gauges provide information at a glance. The GS-R model also includes a power moonroof, power windows and power door locks. A 4-speaker, electronically tuned, AM/FM stereo/cassette audio system with an anti-theft feature is also included as standard equipment. The exterior trim of the GS-R features body-colored side mirrors and protective side moulding.

The manufacturers suggested retail price is $17,910 for the 1992 Integra GS-R and is covered by the Acura 3-year, 36,000-mile limited warranty.

The Acura Division of American Honda offers a range of performance /luxury automobiles that includes the NSX sports car, the Legend Sedan and Coupe, the Vigor sports sedan, and the Integra 3- and 4-door sports sedans.
