Honda Marine Outboard Motors: Model Overview

Honda continually improves its marine outboard motor line by incorporating technologies from its highly advanced automotive and racing heritage.  In order to maximize power output and durability, many Honda Marine engines include exclusive technological features found in the company's most popular automobile engines, including the Honda Accord, Fit, Pilot, Odyssey, CR-V, and Civic. 

Engineers work to ensure every Honda Marine portable outboard and marine engine model—ranging from 2.3 to 250 horsepower—sets the standard for fuel efficiency and ease of operation while staying true to the core Honda attributes of durability, quality, reliability and quiet operation. 

 

Model Lineup

Honda BF2.3: A Mini Powerhouse

Weighing only 29.5 pounds, the Honda Marine BF2.3 is one of the lightest 4-stroke outboard motors in the market.  The single-cylinder, 57.2cc engine incorporates a number of innovative features, including twist grip throttle, front-mount carrying handle and 4-Front Corrosion Protection™. Within this striking package is an engine that optimizes performance and has best-in-class fuel efficiency.

The centrifugal clutch on the Honda BF2.3 maintains a smooth idle for easy trolling, automatically engaging the propeller when the throttle is advanced.  The engine also incorporates a full swivel bracket and rubber isolation mounting of the tiller designed to reduce vibration to the tiller handle. Moreover, since the outboard does not require a water pump, clogging or drainage from weeds or sand are never concerns.
Honda BF4, BF5, BF6: Portable Power 

The Honda Marine all-new BF4, BF5 and BF6 portable outboard engine models provide a complete performance package for the most comfortable journeys in small boats and dinghies—from leisure to emergency applications.  All three engines are equipped with the largest internal fuel tank in their class for extended running time, offer a simple start-stop sequence, low vibration and noise, portability and easy storage.  These new Honda models are easy to start, courtesy of a decompression system that serves to bleed off cylinder pressure to reduce the pulling force required to start the engine. 

Compact and lightweight, the all-new BF models are equipped with a powerful 127cc engine that provides efficient acceleration and high levels of torque.  To help protect the engine, the Honda BF4, BF5 and BF6 outboards also feature an Oil Alert® system that indicates any drop in oil pressure, automatically limiting the engine speed to 2,300 rpm.  In addition, the BF4, BF5 and BF6 engines are available with an optional charging system with a capacity of 6A at 12V to power consumer demands for electronic devices on board.

Honda BF8 and BF9.9:  Lightweight, Dependable Power

The Honda Marine BF8 and BF9.9 outboard motors offer boaters dependable performance in portable packages, and their lightweight profile and innovative features make the outboards simple to transport and use. Auto-Start Enrichment and PGM (programmed)ignition ensure quick starts, while optional tilt control and engine alert indicators are located at the operator's fingertips for quick, comfortable adjustment.

Available Power Thrust Design enhances performance and maneuverability as a 2.33:1 gear ratio and 4-blade Power Thrust propeller combine to produce additional thrust in forward and reverse.  An exhaust outlet above the anti-ventilation plate allows the propeller to run in undisturbed water while in reverse, resulting in greater thrust. The BF8/9.9 also include a 6A regulated charging system for recoil start models and a 12A regulated charging system for electric start models.

Honda BF15 and BF20:   The Ideal Combination of Power and Portability

At 104 pounds, the Honda Marine BF15 and BF20 weigh less than some 9.9 horsepower outboards on the market.  The long-stroke design of these engines and 350 cc displacement provide optimum torque throughout the rpm range.  Additionally, an integrated carrying handle and programmed ignition (PGM) are offered as standard features. Both also are available with Power Thrust design for enhanced performance and maneuverability. A low 2.33:1 gear ratio and 4-blade Power Thrust propeller combine to produce more thrust in forward and reverse, while an exhaust outlet above the anti-ventilation plate allows the propeller to run in undisturbed water while in reverse, resulting in greater thrust.  The BF15/20 also include a 6A regulated charging system for recoil start models and a 12A regulated charging system for electric start models.

Honda BF25 and BF30:   Superior Performance in a Compact Package

The Honda Marine BF25 and BF30 models combine world-renowned reliability with responsive performance in lightweight, compact packages.  At just 159 pounds, the BF30 is by far the lightest outboard in its class.  

Honda's innovative Auto-Start Enrichment and PGM Ignition ensure quick, reliable starts, while a 3-to-3 Induction System (one carburetor per cylinder) provides instant throttle response. 

Tiller throttle friction control, power tilt/trim control and engine alert indicators are located at the operator's fingertips for quick, comfortable adjustment at a glance, and a generous -4 to +12-degree trim angle provides maximum performance and handling.

Honda BF40 and BF50 EFI:  Redefining Mid-Range 4-Stroke Performance

Refreshed for 2017, the Honda Marine BF40 and BF50 EFI provide the perfect balance of powerful acceleration and best-in-class fuel efficiency for fresh and salt-water applications.   

With the new Honda signature "crouching form" design, a new multi-function tiller handle (late availability), a multi-function-display with trolling control and a new switch panel application for multiple engine installations, the refreshed Honda Marine engines deliver consumers upgrades they will appreciate every time they take out their boat.  In addition, the new BF40 and BF50 models have added a new freshwater water flushing hose on the water jacket cover, have reduced engine vibration at idling compared with the previous models and Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) certification.

The duo's in-line 3-cylinder engines feature Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) as well as several Honda-exclusive technologies including: Honda's patented Boosted Low Speed Torque® (BLAST®) system – which advances ignition timing for explosive "hammer-down" acceleration, and Lean Burn Control adjusts the air/fuel mixture for maximum fuel efficiency at cruise.  

Among the lightest outboards in their class, the 214-pound BF40 and BF50 EFI feature a lightweight, 22-amp alternator that offers best-in-class 17-amp charging capacity for multiple electronic accessories.

Honda BF60 EFI:  Performance, Technology and Fuel Efficiency

The Honda Marine BF60 provides the perfect blend of powerful acceleration and best-in-class fuel efficiency for fresh and salt water boating applications.

One of the lightest engines in its class, the 239-pound BF60's 998cc, in-line 3-cylinder engine features Electronic Fuel Injection as well as several Honda-exclusive technologies.  The Honda patented BLAST system advances ignition timing for explosive "hammer-down" acceleration, while Lean Burn Control™ adjusts the air/fuel mixture for maximum fuel efficiency at cruise.    

Perfect for pontoon applications, the Power Thrust BFP60 EFI features a lightweight, 27-amp alternator with best-in-class 22-amp charging capacity for multiple electronic accessories.  The BFP60 also has Easy Dock Steering®, which provides a full 50 degrees of steering to port and starboard, giving pontoon boats unmatched maneuvering in tight marinas. In addition, the BFP60 features a larger gear case for larger propeller applications, making it perfect for pontoons.

Honda BF75 and BF90:   Lightweight Powerhouses

The Honda Marine BF75 and BF90 outboard motors provide powerful acceleration and best-in-class fuel efficiency in both fresh and salt water.

Inspired by the engine architecture of the Honda Fit automobile, the duo's 1.5-liter, 16-valve, in-line 4-cylinder engines feature Electronic Fuel Injection for easy starting and exceptional fuel efficiency.

The Honda patented BLAST system advances ignition timing during "hammer-down" acceleration for explosive holeshots, while a Lean Burn Control system adjusts the air/fuel mixture for maximum fuel efficiency at cruise. A 3-Way Cooling System also keeps cylinders slightly cooler than the engine block to promote long-term durability of critical components.  Performance is further improved with the Honda legendary Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC® – BF90), which provides outstanding torque and power at higher rpm.

Honda BF100: More Power from Initial Blast to Top-End Speed

The BF100 outboard engine is a 4-cylinder, 1,496 cc engine, weighing in at 365 lbs. The model incorporates a number of Honda exclusives including: the Honda legendary VTEC engine, Lean Burn Control and the Honda patented BLAST system.  VTEC synchronizes the lift and duration of the intake valves, both at low rpm and high rpm; programmed Electronic Fuel Injection that delivers the precise amount of fuel/air to each cylinder—resulting in easy starting and instant throttle response with superior fuel efficiency. Lean Burn Control that serves to increase fuel efficiency by allowing combustion to operate on a leaner air/fuel mixture. The BLAST system that advances ignition timing during "hammer-down&" acceleration for explosive holeshots and a high performance gear case that helps reduce drag and minimize hull porpoise and spray—also helping to increase acceleration and top speed.

Honda BF115:   Powerful Performance and Unparalleled Fuel Efficiency

The BF115 outboard motor, available in both 20- and 25-inch shaft models, allow boaters excellent fuel efficiency and quiet operation via the Honda legendary 4-stroke outboard engine technology.  The BF115 is derived from the inline 4-cylinder 2.4 liter dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) engine platform used in the Honda award-winning and popular Accord automobile—the largest displacement engine in its class.  

Honda Marine's exclusive BLAST system delivers holeshot and acceleration performance boaters desire. The BLAST system advances ignition spark timing to within one degree of the knock limit during "hammer down" acceleration.  The resulting boost in available torque at low rpm contributes to a strong holeshot to get a boat up on plane quickly.  The ignition spark timing adjusts appropriately under slower throttle advancement, resulting in a leaner air/fuel mix and class-leading fuel efficiency. 

Honda BF135 and BF150:   Exclusive Designs and Advanced Technology

Based on the engine architecture of the incomparable Honda Accord and CR-V, Honda Marine's BF135 and BF150 offer some of the most innovative, efficient, and reliable outboard engine technology available.

The 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder engines boast a 3-Way Cooling System that keeps cylinders slightly cooler than the engine block to promote the long-term durability of critical components.  The BF150 features Honda's exclusive VTEC technology for the BF150, delivering impressive mid-range acceleration. 

Lean Burn Control adjusts the air/fuel mix to maximize power and improve fuel efficiency at cruise, while an on-demand 51-amp alternator keeps battery banks charged all day, even when running multiple accessories.

Honda BF200 and BF225:  Superior Power and Reliable Performance

Honda Marine sets the industry standard for performance, durability, and reliability with its powerful outboard engines, the BF200 and BF225. 

Derived from the Honda Accord's V6 engine platform, the 3.5-liter, 6-cylinder engines feature VTEC technology for outstanding torque at any speed, while the Honda patented BLAST system contributes to explosive holeshots. 

Lean Burn Control automatically adjusts the air/fuel mix to maximize power and improve fuel efficiency at cruise, while a best-in-class on-demand 90-amp alternator keeps battery banks charged all day, even when running multiple accessories.

Honda BF250: Flagship Engine, Advanced Technology

 Honda Marine's flagship model is the BF250 four-stroke engine, the most powerful outboard in the lineup. 

High fuel efficiency and superior performance are the hallmarks of the Honda Marine BF250. The 3.6-liter VTEC engine incorporates the world's first marine direct air, dual circuit induction system of its type on a production outboard (providing for cooler, denser air for better combustion than conventional under-cowl induction systems) and has a full-throttle RPM range of 5,300-6,300.

The design of the variable air intake system on the Honda BF250 also includes a large air-intake silencer that reduces noise. The silencing effect results from a chamber being added to the intake passage—causing sound waves to interfere with one another—creating a side branch effect that quiets noise.
