Statement by American Honda Regarding Transmission Control Unit Software Recall: 2018-2019 Honda Odyssey Touring and Touring Elite

  • Approximately 50,000 vehicles are affected in the United States
  • Transmission control software will be updated, 12-volt battery cables tightened and, if the parking gear does not work properly, the transmission will be replaced, all for free
  • No reports of related crashes or injuries

American Honda will voluntarily recall approximately 50,000 model-year 2018-2019 Honda Odyssey Touring and Touring Elite minivans in the United States to update the 10-speed automatic transmission control software, tighten 12-volt battery cables and, if the parking gear does not work properly, replace the transmission, for free.

The original 10-speed automatic transmission control software may become confused if the 12-volt battery cable disconnects while driving, resulting in activation of the parking gear. When the parking gear attempts to engage while driving, it can damage the parking rod, potentially preventing future engagement of the parking gear. If the parking gear does not engage and the parking brake is not applied, a vehicle may roll unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash or injury. Honda has received no reports of crashes or injuries related to this condition.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda. Mailed notification to owners will begin in early-June 2019. Owners of these models can also determine if their specific vehicles are included in the recall by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.
