American Honda will voluntarily recall approximately 65,000 Acura MDX (2017-2019), Honda HR-V (2016-2019) and Honda Odyssey (2018-2019) vehicles in the United States to bleed the hydraulic brake system to remove any gas bubbles, for free.
Due to a rear brake caliper manufacturing error, the caliper piston's surface plating may contain excessive levels of hydrogen. When installed into the braking system, the excess hydrogen can off-gas into the brake fluid, dissipating from the piston shortly after the vehicle's first use. Introduction of gas into the brake fluid can reduce braking performance, potentially creating a regulatory noncompliance (FMVSS 135) and may increase the risk of a crash. Honda has received no reports of crashes or injuries related to this condition.
Honda and Acura are announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to an authorized dealer as soon as they receive notification of this recall from Honda or Acura. Mailed notification to customers will begin in mid-December 2018.
