Statement by American Honda Regarding Electric Water Pump Recall: 2017-2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell

  • 1,082 vehicles affected in the United States, all in California
  • Electric water pump will be replaced, for free
  • No reports of crashes or injuries related to the defect

Honda will voluntarily recall 1,082 model-year 2017-2018 Clarity Fuel Cell vehicles in the United States to replace the electric water pump, for free. In the U.S., the Clarity Fuel Cell currently is exclusively available for lease in California, and all affected vehicles will require the free repair at one of the twelve authorized Honda Fuel Cell dealers in the state. Honda has received no reports of crashes or injuries related to this issue.

The electric water pump that helps cool the fuel cell stack may corrode after prolonged contact with the cooling water, eventually becoming inoperable. If the electric water pump fails, warning lights will appear on the dashboard and the fuel cell stack will shut down to prevent overheating, resulting in an unexpected loss of motive power, potentially increasing the risk of a crash.

Honda is announcing this recall to encourage lessees of affected vehicles to take them to an authorized Honda Fuel Cell dealer as soon as they receive mailed notification from Honda, which is expected to occur in early-June 2019. Replacement parts are not available at the time of this announcement, but Honda expects updated electric water pumps to arrive at dealers before mailed notices go out. Clarity Fuel Cell lessees can also determine if their vehicles will require repair by visiting www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.
