American Honda will voluntarily expand a recall announced in September 2017, adding 2,611 Honda and Acura vehicles, to replace the passenger front airbag module, for free. Combined with the original recall, 3,257 vehicles are now included. While performing recall replacements of Takata passenger airbag inflators, dealer technicians at several U.S. dealers installed replacement inflators incorrectly in these vehicles. If an airbag with an incorrectly-installed inflator deploys in a crash, the airbag may not inflate properly, increasing the risk of injury to passengers. No improper deployments or injuries have been reported related to this issue.
After the initial recall in September involving installation errors at a single dealership, Honda investigated repair procedures being used at all of its U.S. dealers. Through this process, Honda was able to identify similar errors by technicians at several other Honda and Acura dealers in the U.S., prompting the expansion of the recall. Honda has taken steps to reinforce the correct repair procedure, as listed in existing Service Bulletins, with all dealer technicians.
Honda is announcing this recall to encourage each owner of an affected vehicle to take it to a dealer for the free repair as soon they receive notice of the recall. Mailed notification to owners of affected vehicles will begin in late-December 2017. Additionally, owners of these models can determine now if their vehicles will require repair at www.recalls.honda.com or by calling (888) 234-2138.
