Honda Honors its Top North American Suppliers

Honda honored nearly 100 North American suppliers for achievements in supplying parts and materials at the 34th annual Honda Supplier Conference, attended by representatives from more than 600 original equipment suppliers and more than 400 service parts suppliers, April 26-27, in Toronto.

During the conference, Honda shared with its suppliers how supply chain innovation and flexibility can reduce costs and improve the quality of the manufacturing process. The company honored suppliers in two areas – those supplying parts and materials for mass production products and companies supplying service parts that serve the needs of customers after they have purchased Honda and Acura products.

"Honda values our collaboration with innovative suppliers as we work together to create high quality vehicles to meet the growing expectations of our customers," said Tom Lake, vice president for Honda North American Purchasing, Honda of America Mfg., Inc.

Honda purchased a record $32 billion in parts and materials for mass production from North American suppliers in 2017. This supported sales of more than 1.6 million Honda and Acura passenger vehicles last year in North America as the company continued a strong cadence of new product introductions with eight completely new or refreshed models in 2017. Honda also purchased more than $1 billion in parts from its Service Parts suppliers in North America last year.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) Supplier Awards

Honda recognized 45 OEM parts suppliers, those serving the company with parts and components for mass production, for their performance excellence in three categories – quality, on-time delivery and value. Honda honored one supplier for achieving excellence across all three categories and 13 suppliers for performance excellence across two award categories.

In addition, Honda R&D Americas, Inc. presented its Excellence in Innovation Award to ArcelorMittal Tailored Blanks, Detroit. This award honors suppliers that achieve truly innovative results through breakthrough ideas.

The Supplier Sustainability Award, honoring a supplier that demonstrates an exceptional commitment to social responsibility went to The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

Honda has more than 700 (OEM) suppliers that provide parts to 16 Honda plants in North America that produce Honda and Acura automobiles and light trucks and the engines and transmissions that power them.

Honda Service Parts Suppliers Awards

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. honored 45 suppliers for outstanding performance in supplying service parts that serve the needs of customers after they have purchased Honda and Acura vehicles.

Honda Service Parts suppliers also were rated on their performance in quality, delivery and value.  Distinct from the OEM supplier awards, the Service Parts awards are based on overall scores reflecting combined performance in all three categories.

Working with nearly 1,200 Service Parts suppliers in North America, American Honda provides service and accessory parts for the more than 20 million Honda and Acura automobiles in operation in the United States.

American Honda manages a national network of parts and distribution facilities that deliver high-quality, high-value service parts to 1,300 Honda and Acura dealers nationwide, that consistently rank the company as managing the best parts operations in the auto industry.

Honda Manufacturing in North America

Honda began manufacturing products in America in 1979 and was the first Japanese automaker to produce automobiles in America, marked by the start of Accord production in Marysville, Ohio, in 1982.

Over nearly four decades, Honda has steadily grown its local manufacturing capabilities and now employs more than 25,000 associates at 19 plants in North America with the capacity to produce more than 1.92 million automobiles, three million engines, 400,000 power equipment products and 330,000 powersports products each year, using domestic and globally sourced parts. In 2017, more than 90 percent of all Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. were made in North America, using domestic and globally sourced parts.

Honda also manufactures the HondaJet advanced light jet and GE Honda HF120 turbofan engines in America. Cumulatively, Honda has invested more than $20 billion in its North American manufacturing capabilities, including more than $4 billion over the past four years.  The company also works with more than 736 original equipment suppliers in North America with cumulative parts purchases exceeding $415 billion over 35 years.

Honda’s Top 2017 OEM Suppliers

Honda’s 736 Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) suppliers provide parts to 16 Honda plants in North America. For 2017, the company honored 45 Top OEM suppliers for their excellence in one or more of five categories -- Quality, Delivery, Value, Innovation and Sustainability.
