American Honda Sales Steady in September

Total American Honda sales of 94,921 vehicles in September were down 3.8 percent from last year, but showed an improvement during the last week of the month, American Honda Motor Co., Inc. announced today.

"American consumers have proven time and again they're a resilient group," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president. "The tragedies of Sept. 11 stopped everything as Americans mourned together. Although we're still concerned about the economic outlook, consumers seem to be returning to stores and showing their confidence in America and the American economy. The last weekend was nearly back to normal from a sales standpoint."

Acura Division sales of 13,006, boosted by the new RSX sports coupe and MDX luxury SUV, were up 14.7 percent for the month. Civic sales of 29,725 were up 14.3 percent for the month, but overall Honda Division sales were down 6.2 percent, hampered by low inventories of several models, including the Accord and Odyssey.

American Honda 2001 model year sales of 1,171,511 were up 0.8 percent from the 2000 model year and set a new record for the company. Acura Division model year sales of 165,983 were up 24.7 percent for the model year and broke the record dating back to 1989, mainly on the strength of MDX and TL luxury performance sedan. For the model year, American Honda light truck sales also rose 3.6 percent to 286,692 vehicles, a new record.
