Active Shutter Grille System
Included on all Pilot trims, Honda's Active Shutter Grille system, located in the lower grille opening, reduces aerodynamic drag — especially at cruising speeds — which directly helps to improve fuel efficiency. The system uses an electric actuator controlled by a processor that monitors ambient air temperature, the climate control setting, and the temperature of the engine coolant and automatic transmission fluid. Depending on these factors, the system either opens or closes four shutters simultaneously to control the amount of air flowing through the radiator and the air conditioning condenser.

The system is designed to keep the shutters closed as much as possible to minimize aerodynamic drag, even in city driving, and they remain closed until the vehicle's regular operating temperature is reached. This also benefits fuel economy as it keeps the engine and associated systems within their most efficient temperature range.

New Post-Production Option Packages

Larger, More Premium Cabin
With clean surfacing, sophisticated materials and premium touches, Pilot’s all-new modern interior builds on the Honda design direction to create the most upscale Honda SUV ever. Pilot is also more comfortable and spacious than ever, with class-leading passenger space and notably more legroom in the second and third rows.

A clean, uncluttered instrument panel top reduces windshield reflections and improves outward visibility. High quality materials are used throughout the interior, especially on touchpoints, with close attention paid to the operation of all switchgear and controls including the click and heft of knobs, stalks and switches. New seat fabrics are both upscale and durable, and the metallic finish on components such as the climate control knobs provides a premium feel.

Second-row legroom is up 2.4 inches, and the second-row seats feature up to 10 degrees of recline angle — an additional 4 degrees of rearward recline compared to the outgoing Pilot — for a more relaxing passenger experience. There are also more accessible LATCH anchors that make it easier to quickly and properly install front and rear facing child seats. Additional forward tilt range improves entry and exit to the third row, which is among the largest in class with 0.6 inches of additional legroom over the previous Pilot. With the second-row seat in the rearmost position, the all-new Pilot has an additional 2.1 inches of legroom in the third row compared to the outgoing Pilot. The third row seat’s base was also raised by approximately 2 inches for a more natural seating position.

More Comfortable Body Stabilizing Seats
Pilot features all-new front Body Stabilizing Seats, which firmly hold the body, reduce fatigue and enhance comfort, especially on long drives. This new front seat design uses multiple internal structures to provide improved support across the entire body, including a resin mat that supports the area from the pelvis to the lumbar spine for a more stable and solid seating feel. Forward and lateral pelvic tilt are reduced by the new curve of the seat bottom.

An inner frame on the seat bottom stabilizes the hip to reduce movement and posture changes during the various G forces the user may experience while driving. The seat also centers the upper body over the pelvis, helping to stabilize the upper arms and the eyesight of the driver, making it easier to drive.

Segment-Exclusive Flexible 8-Occupant Seating

Innovative on-demand 8-occupant flexibility gives Pilot Touring and Elite an extra level of versatility for those unpredictable carpool moments. In the second row, a segment-exclusive multi-function removable middle seat can be conveniently stored underneath the rear cargo floor instead of being left at home in the garage. Families then have the seat available if they need it later in their journey, providing owners the flexibility of  three distinct seating options at any time:

  • A traditional second row bench for 3-across seating and 8-occupant total capacity (middle seat up)
  • A captain's chair-style wide center armrest with additional drink holders (middle seat down)
  • Wide pass-through for access to the third row (middle seat removed), particularly useful when child seats are installed in the outboard second-row seats

Pilot is also the only vehicle in its class with 8-occupant seating and an opening panoramic sunroof, which is standard on Touring and Elite.

Expanded Cabin Storage
The new Pilot features expanded interior storage including a massive console bin that can swallow a full-size tablet and the return of Pilot’s clever passenger-side instrument panel shelf. A popular feature inside the second-generation Pilot, the shelf is ideal for sunglasses, earbuds, and other small items.

An improved storage tray ahead of the shifter is large enough to accommodate two large smartphones side-by side, and there are 14 large-volume cupholders throughout the interior, including eight that will fit wide, 32 oz water bottles.

Distinct Interior Design for Each Trim
Each Pilot grade features fine craftsmanship and unique interior touches. Pilot LX comes standard with seating for eight covered in gray cloth and bold diamond-embossed bolsters, while Pilot Sport offers black cloth with orange accent stitch. Pilot Sport also adds an 8-way power seat, leather-wrapped wheel and heated front seats. Pilot EX-L adds leather seating surfaces, a driver-seat memory function and available second-row captain’s chairs.

The 7-occupant TrailSport stands out with rugged details including orange contrast stitching and exclusive front head restraints embroidered with the TrailSport logo. Standard all-season floor mats with the TrailSport logo add function and durability protecting the carpet from snow, mud and debris. Seating surfaces apply an easy-to-clean leatherette. Second-row captain’s chairs and a panoramic sunroof are standard. More information on TrailSport provided on page 26.

TrailSport and Elite also feature a heated steering wheel. Like EX-L, Touring and Elite feature soft leather upholstery, and the top-of-the-range Elite gets exclusive perforated leather inserts, accent piping, ventilated front seats, and additional upper seatback pockets behind the front seats. Both Touring and Elite feature unique interior ambient lighting and a standard panoramic sunroof.

Expansive Storage and Versatile Cargo Capability
The 2023 Pilot has the most cargo room in the model’s history, with up to 114.3 cu.-ft. behind the first row, up to 60.1 cu. ft. behind the second row and up to 22.4 cu.-ft. behind the third row1.

More Power and Refinement
Pilot is one of the quickest and most-powerful SUVs in its class with an all-new 24-valve DOHC 3.5-liter V6 engine featuring an all-new direct injection system. Built* in the engine facility at the company’s auto plant in Lincoln, Alabama, this is the most powerful Honda V6 ever offered in the U.S. market, producing 285 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque (both SAE net).

*using domestic and globally-sourced parts.

The all-aluminum V6 features a unique block and low-profile cylinder heads with high-tumble ports and a narrow 35-degree valve angle for better combustion. The low-profile design of the new DOHC cylinder heads also allowed a more compact rocker arm and hydraulic lash adjuster design.

Honda engineers also did away with separate cam bearing caps, instead incorporating the caps directly into the valve cover itself. The result is a 30mm reduction in overall cylinder head height. The new design also reduces the number of parts.

New Engine Block and Crankshaft
With its 60-degree V-angle, Pilot’s new 3.5-liter V6 engine is inherently smooth and has compact overall dimensions that allow efficient packaging within the vehicle. The V6 has a die-cast lightweight aluminum alloy block with cast-in-place iron cylinder liners. Made with a centrifugal spin-casting process, the thin-wall liners are high in strength and low in porosity. The block incorporates a deep-skirt design with four bolts per bearing cap for rigid crankshaft support, minimized noise and vibration. A high-strength steel crankshaft is used for minimum weight.

A cooling control spacer positioned in the water jacket surrounding the cylinders helps control warm-up and cylinder liner operating temperatures to reduce friction. Plateau honing of the cylinder lining further reduces friction between the piston skirts and the cylinder walls by creating a smooth surface. The 2-stage machining uses two grinding processes instead of the more conventional single-stage honing process. Plateau honing also enhances the long-term wear characteristics of the engine.

New Pistons
New shallow dish pistons help maintain stable combustion and contribute to efficiency. The lightweight pistons have a carefully optimized skirt design to minimize reciprocating weight, which reduces vibration and increases operating efficiency. Chrome-nitrided piston rings also help reduce friction for greater operating efficiency.

Cylinder Heads and Valvetrain
The engine's 4-valve per cylinder heads are a double-overhead-camshaft design, with the cams driven by an automatically-tensioned toothed belt. Made of low-pressure cast, low-porosity aluminum, each cylinder head incorporates a "tumble port" design that improves combustion efficiency by creating a more homogeneous fuel-air mixture.

New Direct Injection System
Pilot’s new V6 engine features a new higher-pressure multistage direct-injection system that enables improved emissions performance, along with high fuel efficiency. The new system features a compact, high-pressure, direct-injection pump that allows high fuel flow, while variable pressure control optimizes injector operation.

New multi-hole injectors deliver fuel directly into each cylinder at 30 MPa of fuel pressure (up from 20 MPa) for more efficient combustion without loss of power or torque.

Variable Cylinder Management™
Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM™) maximizes fuel efficiency and reduces emissions. VCM™ operates the engine with three cylinders in a wide range of situations, switching seamlessly to six-cylinder operation when more power is needed. To prevent pumping losses, the engine computer closes the valves on the inactive cylinders.

The SOHC 3.5-liter engine used in the previous Pilot accomplished this with VTEC®, which locked the rocker arms activating the valves together to prevent the valves from opening when VCM™ is active. To achieve the low profile of the new DOHC cylinder heads, this arrangement has been replaced with a more compact rocker arm and hydraulic lash adjuster design.

When all six cylinders are in use, a pin in the valve lifter assembly is held in place with oil pressure. When VCM™ is activated under light cruise, the engine's Electronic Control Unit (ECU) changes the oil flow path, allowing the pin to slide out of the lifter, creating a gap that prevents the valve from opening. When the ECU determines all six cylinders are needed, the system readjusts, sliding the pin back in place and reactivating the valves for full power.

Improved Emissions Performance
To further reduce emissions, a new low-temperature active catalyst with a low level of noble metals, drops NOx emissions and total hydrocarbon emissions giving the Pilot a LEV3 SULEV 30 rating.

Responsive 10-Speed Automatic Transmission
Performance is further enhanced by Pilot’s first 10-speed automatic transmission. Paddle shifters are standard for manual control, making Pilot more fun-to-drive.

Tuned exclusively for Pilot, the in-house developed 10-speed automatic transmission is refined and responsive. Compared with the previous 9-speed automatic, the 10-speed maximizes performance and fuel efficiency with a 3.3% wider overall ratio range with a 9% lower (numerically higher) first gear, for optimal gear selection and an improved launch. The 10-speed automatic also features faster and smoother shifts with rapid four-gear downshifts for quick passing power.

Coupled with the improved 10-speed automatic is an all-new torque converter design that incorporates a pendulum damper, a first for a Honda V6 engine. The pendulum damper works by counteracting engine torsional vibrations for a particular tuned frequency. The pendulum, in combination with the traditional spring damper, allows maximized smoothness and efficiency in all conditions.

Second-Generation Torque Vectoring i-VTM4™ All-Wheel Drive
Pilot also introduces the second generation of Honda’s award-winning torque vectoring i-VTM4™ all-wheel drive system. Standard on TrailSport and Elite, the new and more capable i-VTM4™ system features a stronger rear differential that can handle 40% more torque and provides 30% faster response, optimizing traction in all driving scenarios, especially slick conditions and off-road.

The new lightweight rear differential utilizes an electric motor that powers a pair of hydraulic pumps – one for each clutch pack. A pair of linear solenoids controlled by the i-VTM4™ ECU selectively sends pressure to the clutch packs, which in turn control the amount of power sent to each rear wheel, optimizing cornering grip and line traceability.

The i-VTM4™ system progressively distributes optimum torque not only between the front and rear axles, but also between the left and right rear wheels for more precise and exhilarating handling response across a wide variety of road conditions. Up to 70% of the engine’s torque can be sent to the rear axle, and 100% of that torque can be distributed to either the left or right rear wheel.

When cornering, i-VTM4™ distributes more torque to the outside rear wheel, creating a yaw moment to help turn the vehicle through corners — making for more accurate turns, reducing understeer and improving controllability.

New Drive Modes
Five selectable drive modes are standard on Pilot and optimize the driving experience for various conditions: Normal, Econ and Snow, plus new Sport and Tow modes. All-wheel drive models (EX-L and above) also feature a retuned Sand mode and a new Trail mode, which optimize Pilot’s capabilities off-road.

Stout Towing Capability
Pilot can tow as much as 5,000 pounds, which is more than enough for most boats, campers or “toy” trailers that serve as the key to adventure for most customers.

A dealer-installed transmission cooler accessory is no longer required for Pilot to reach this maximum towing capability. A standard Tow mode further optimizes Pilot’s towing capability, and a trailer hitch is standard on Pilot TrailSport.

New Standard Hill Descent Control
Honda’s first Hill Descent Control system debuted on the 2023 HR-V and 2023 CR-V earlier this year, and it’s now standard on every Pilot. The system increases off-road capability with more control on steep, slippery declines of 7% or more.

With the press of a button on the center console, the driver can select a speed between 2 and 12 mph while using the brake or gas pedal. Once the pedal is released, Pilot will maintain the set speed, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering for as long as Hill Descent Control is active. Hill Descent Control will remain active until the system is shut off or the speed exceeds 12 mph.

More Rigid Body Structure

A sportier and more engaging driving experience was created through an all-new chassis and Pilot’s stiffest body structure ever. The extremely rigid platform was engineered from the very beginning with TrailSport’s true off-road capabilities in mind, which also benefits the ride, handling and overall refinement of the entire Pilot lineup with a 60% increase in front lateral rigidity and a 30% increase in rear lateral rigidity. The result is a class-leading combination of off-road capability and on-road dynamics.

Multiple material grades are used in the Pilot's body construction to achieve excellent overall vehicle dynamics, optimized safety performance, and noise reduction. Demonstrating Honda’s longstanding leadership in the application of high strength steel, five different grades are used, including premium high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel. Aluminum is used for the hood and front bumper-reinforcement beam.

All materials were chosen to achieve the best combination of strength, rigidity, dynamic performance and light weight. The body structure is composed 65.7% high-strength steel, with an increase of 7.8% additional ultra-high-strength steel over the previous Pilot.

All-New Chassis
Based on Honda’s new light truck architecture, Pilot’s wheelbase has been extended to 113.8 inches (+2.8 inches) for a smoother ride, and significantly wider tracks (+0.9 to 1.2 inches in front, and +1.1 to 1.5 inches in the rear) improve stability.

All-New Front and Rear Suspension
New MacPherson struts in front and an all-new rear multilink suspension make Pilot more fun-to-drive with confident, agile and precise handling, while simultaneously improving ride quality. The front suspension’s vertical stiffness is reduced 8% for improved ride comfort, and front roll stiffness was increased 12%. The rear suspension’s longitudinal compliance is up 29% to also improve ride comfort, and rear lateral suspension stiffness is increased 24% for additional stability.

Up front, a new rigid-mounted subframe supports forged-aluminum lower control arms, hydraulic bushings, coil springs and, depending on trim, either a solid or hollow stabilizer bar. Replacing the previous floating-type subframe, the new front subframe translates steering inputs to the tires with greater fidelity.

This setup uses moderate spring rates, relatively firm damping and specially tuned bushings for a smooth, controlled ride with exceptional cornering abilities.

Pilot’s new multi-link rear suspension also improves stability and response to give Pilot a world-class combination of agility and ride comfort. The new multi-link rear suspension system offers both handling performance and ride compliance significantly above the previous generation.

Designed for both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations, the new multi-link system uses one cast-iron control arm, three steel control arms and an aluminum knuckle to minimize unsprung weight and optimize component stiffness. Pilot’s handling was also sharpened by increasing the rigidity of the rear suspension mounting points and optimizing the geometry and compliance of the all-new suspension.

The new rear suspension system also separates the rear suspension springs from the dampers. This helps improve packaging and allows more third-row passenger and foot room, and a lower cargo floor that contributes to an improvement in cargo capacity behind the third-row seats.

New Belt-Driven Variable-Ratio Electric Power-Assisted Rack-and-Pinion Steering (EPS)
Pilot’s confidence-inspiring dynamics are enhanced by a new belt-driven electric power steering (EPS) system that uses a high-output electric motor to increase the torque available for steering assist. This high capacity allows even faster steering response – and less input from the driver – than in the previous-generation Pilot. The new EPS system's variable gear ratio system is designed and tuned to provide the most essential steering characteristics including:

  • Quicker response across the entire steering range
  • Fewer turns lock-to-lock
  • Agile low- and mid-speed maneuverability for city streets and parking
  • Driver confidence and security
  • Smooth, natural, direct and precise steering feel
  • High-speed stability and predictability for highway travel
  • Quiet operation

The system's variable steering ratio is enabled by a steering rack with adjusted gear-tooth spacing, so the steering ratio is quickest directly on center for optimal handling agility, and slower as the steering wheel is turned further off center.

New Rigid Steering Column
Steering feel and accuracy are now class-leading with a new, stiffer steering column. The 2023 Pilot steering column uses a new highly rigid design with a one-piece aluminum mounting bracket, two radial bearings for smoother steering feel and maximum driver feedback.

Furthering these refinements is a new sportier steering wheel with a 3.5% wider grip for a more natural, comfortable feel. The steering wheel is wrapped in a more supple leather, and its cross stitching achieves a cleaner appearance and less abrasive feeling compared to the outgoing model’s baseball stitch. To suit a wider range of driver sizes, the new steering column also features 25% greater tilt and 50% greater telescopic range.

Improved Brake System
Pilot’s stopping power has increased with larger front brake rotors (from 12.6 inches to 13.8 inches) and larger calipers, and a new Electric Brake Booster (EBB). A reduced overall pedal stroke and improved heat capacity improve driver confidence in all driving situations and conditions, especially in emergency situations and on wet or snowy roads and trails.

All Pilots are equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist for a powerful and linear brake feel and confident stops in a wide range of driving conditions. The system provides a comfortable and refined feel at low speeds, predictable and easy operation on the highway, a fun-to-drive feel on winding roads, and reassuring high-performance stopping in emergency situations.

Wheels and Tires
Pilot LX comes standard with 18-inch Blade Sliver wheels with a unique 5-spoke design, which have a machined finish on EX-L. Sport upgrades to stylish 7-spoke 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels finished in Shark Gray, which feature an upscale machined finish on Touring and Elite. Pilot TrailSport features unique 18-inch Shark Gray wheels with a rugged look, carefully designed with inset spokes to better protect them from trail damage, and the TrailSport logo cast in the thick, outer flange.

LX and EX-L have 255/60R18 all-season (M+S) tires while Pilot Sport, Touring and Elite come standard with lower-profile 255/50R20 all-season (M+S) tires for enhanced driving performance. For improved off-road performance, TrailSport comes with 265/60R18 all-terrain Continental TerrainContact tires.

New Honda Off-Road Capability Rating System
To quantify target metrics and off-road performance, Honda engineers developed a new proprietary off-road capability rating system in cooperation with the Nevada Automotive Test Center (NATC), a pioneer in off-road testing, with six categories to calculate a vehicle overall rating:

  • Suspension: including ride quality over rough roads
  • Dimensional: ground clearance, approach/break-over/departure angles

Thick Steel Skid Plates
Thick steel skid plates protect Pilot TrailSport’s oil pan, transmission and gas tank. Designed with input from Honda Powersports engineers who created skid plates for Honda’s award-winning off-road motorcycles, ATVs and side-by-sides, the skid plates can support the entire weight of the Pilot TrailSport crashing down on a rock while minimizing the collection of debris like sand, gravel, mud and snow. The front skid plate is also strategically vented to allow for proper underbody airflow without the intrusion of debris.

Constructed of high-strength steel (590MPa), the front skid plate measures 4mm thick and the fuel tank skid plate measures 2.8 mm thick. Stout recovery points rated at twice Pilot TrailSport’s Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) are cleverly integrated into the front skid plate and the tow hitch situated behind TrailSport’s full-size spare tire.

Trail Mode and Trail Torque Logic
In Trail mode, TrailSport’s exclusive trail torque logic off-road system manages the i-VTM4™ torque vectoring all-wheel drive system’s distribution of the engine torque based on available traction while simultaneously utilizing the front brakes individually to apply brake vectoring – reducing wheelspin and maintaining traction.

Trail torque logic also increases the amount of power going to the rear axle in certain situations, like climbing a tough off-road trail with deep V-shaped ditches that can cause a tire to lose contact to the ground temporarily, as much as 75% of available power is routed to the individual tire with the most traction. For greater traction utilization and smoother progress up the trail, the remaining 25% torque potential is sent to the non-tractive tire to allow immediate transfer of drive force once that tire regains traction.

Trail torque logic – how it works:

  1. One side of rear axle loses traction
  2. Trail torque logic control detects condition
  3. Rear axle torque increased
  4. Drive force transfers to the wheel with the most traction
  5. Low traction wheel maintains torque potential to allow immediate transfer of drive force once the tire regains traction

New TrailWatch Camera System
A new TrailWatch camera system uses four exterior cameras and four camera views to help drivers navigate obstacles outside their natural line of sight due to slope or proximity such as blind crests, deep ruts and the trail’s edge.

In Trail mode below 15 mph, the forward view camera automatically turns on, then deactivates above 15 mph. For additional driver support, and unlike other similar trail camera systems, TrailWatch automatically reactivates if the vehicle speed dips below 12 mph.

TrailWatch camera views:

  • Front Wide View: Provides a forward view form a low vantage point for traversing deep ruts, water obstacles and cresting hills
  • Side View Left/Right: Provides a combined view of the left and right sides of the vehicle for navigating tight trails.
  • Overhead View: Shows a birds-eye 360 degree view of the vehicle to avoid contacting corners on various obstacles like rocks or bushes.
  • Rear Wide View: Shows a wide-angle rearview to give more visual information while backing up.

Rugged Interior Details
The 7-passenger TrailSport stands out with rugged interior details including orange contrast stitching and exclusive front head restraints embroidered with the TrailSport logo. Standard all-season floor mats with TrailSport logos add function and durability, protecting the carpet from snow, mud and debris. Second-row captain’s chairs, a heated steering wheel and a panoramic sunroof are standard.

The new front sensor camera features a 90-degree field of view, up from 50 degrees on the previous generation. The millimeter-wave radar is now mounted directly behind the Honda logo on the grille, which helps to increase its field of view to 120-degrees from the 50 degrees on the previous generation. This wide angle improves collision prevention performance via a better ability to recognize attributes of objects such as a vehicle, bicycles or pedestrians, as well as white lines, and road boundaries such as curbs and road signs.

The camera detects feature points of a target and recognizes attributes of objects such as vehicles or pedestrians. With the use of an exceptionally fast processor, the system measures distance and the lateral position of objects based on the change in the size of the target object, how long it took for the change to occur and speed of the vehicle. This enables the camera to recognize the various objects described above.

Honda Sensing® functions include:

  • New: Traffic Jam Assist (TJA): Works in conjunction with ACC and LKAS to provide lane-keeping functions at speeds below approximately 45 mph all the way to a standstill, such as in congested traffic.
  • New: Traffic Sign Recognition System (TSR): New camera automatically recognizes traffic speed limit signs, displaying the information on the digital meter immediately after the sign is passed.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow (ACC): New camera system improves Adaptive Cruise Control with more natural brake feel and quicker reactions to changes in traffic. It also responds more quickly when changing into an open lane from behind a slower car and better maintains a constant vehicle speed in downhill situations.
  • Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS): LKAS reduces the need for steering correction movements and driving effort. For the 2023 Pilot, LKAS has been improved with more linear and natural feeling steering assist, better line tracing in corners, and improved resistance to crosswinds.
  • Blind Spot Information (BSI) system: Using millimeter-wave radar installed on the rear corners of the vehicle, the available Blind Spot Information system can detect vehicles approaching from the rear, signaling the driver with a visual and audible warning. Warning distance has been increased to 82 feet of radar range, further improving the detection performance of overtaking vehicles.
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™): A new camera system and more advanced software enables the use of CMBS™ in more situations, including the detection of pedestrians and bicyclists. If no corrective action is taken when FCW signals an alert, CMBS™ can apply different levels of autonomous braking action to help reduce vehicle speed and eventual collision forces, and therefore to help reduce the severity of a collision.
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW, integrated with CMBS™): When the system determines a collision is possible with a detected vehicle, visual and audible alerts from the FCW system prompt the driver to take corrective actions.
  • Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM): Identifies solid or dashed painted lane lines, Botts' dots and cat’s-eye markers to find the edge of the road and uses steering force to keep the vehicle from departing the lane or roadway altogether. The detection range is expanded up to road shoulders and curbs because of the wide-angle detection sensor.
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW): Integrated with RDM, LDW operates at speeds from approximately 45 to 90 mph and is designed to alert the driver if the vehicle is leaving a detected lane without the turn signal being activated.

Advanced Compability Engineering (ACE™) Body Structure and Collision Protection
ACE™ now features a new structure optimized and integrated into the front sub-frame and side-frame that improves Pilot’s crash compatibility with smaller vehicles, and occupant protection in oblique frontal collisions. Targeting the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ and NHTSA 5-star ratings, Pilot is also designed to meet the IIHS Side Impact Crashworthiness Evaluation (SICE) 2.0 as well as anticipated future standards.

Advanced Airbag and Seatbelt Technologies
Pilot features eight standard airbags, the most ever for the model. This includes a next-gen passenger-side front airbag that uses a three-chamber design.

The new passenger front airbag is particularly beneficial in angled frontal impacts in which lateral collision forces can cause an occupant's head to rotate severely or slide off the airbag, increasing the chance of serious injury. The new airbag is designed to reduce strain on brain tissue by 75% compared to the previous generation front passenger airbag by better controlling the front passenger's head in certain types of crashes.

Compared to a single inflatable chamber of conventional airbag systems, the new passenger airbag consists of four major components: three inflated compartments (a center chamber and two outward-projecting side chambers that create a wide base across the dash) and an uninflated "sail panel" that stretches between the two side chambers. The "sail panel" is designed to initially catch and decelerate the occupant's head with less force prior to contacting the lower chamber, while directing it inward between the two inflated chambers to cradle and help protect the front seat passenger's head.

  • Driver and Front Passenger Side Airbags: Driver and front passenger side airbags mounted in the outboard area of each front seatback are designed to help provide pelvis and thorax protection in the event of a severe side impact.
  • Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensor: All outboard seating positions include a side curtain airbag system. In addition to providing a significant level of head protection in side impacts and rollovers, the side curtain airbags offer enhanced protection in frontal impacts. The side curtain airbags feature optimized cell patterns and sizes designed to work harmoniously with the frontal airbags.
  • New Driver and Passenger Knee Airbags: These airbags are designed to better control the forward motion of the occupants in the event of a frontal collision, in conjunction with the front airbags and seatbelts. Each knee airbag is contained beneath a panel on the underside of the instrument panel, which is contoured away from the knees.

Standard Rear Seatbelt Reminder and Rear Seat Reminder systems are also new to Pilot; the latter notifies drivers to check the rear seating area for children, pets or other precious cargo when exiting the vehicle.

Seatbelt technology has been updated as well, with the front and second-row outboard seatbelts featuring belt pretensioners with load limiters to help reduce the risk of chest injuries.

Additional Safety and Driver Assistive Technologies
The fourth-generation Pilot also features additional safety and driver assistive technologies like Driver Attention Monitor, which continually monitors and assesses driver behavior behind the wheel to help determine if the driver is becoming inattentive.

If it detects fatigue, the driver is alerted by a coffee cup icon and a four-level bar graph on the dash. As the driver's attention drops, fewer and fewer bars are illuminated, and when it drops to two, the system displays a message inviting the driver to take a break. If the driver continues driving and the graph drops to the lowest level of one bar, a beeper sounds and the steering wheel vibrates, prompting the driver to pay closer attention or take a rest break.
