2017 Honda Civic Si Press Kit - Overview

The 2017 Civic Si Sedan and Coupe are the eighth iteration of Si, Civic's legendary, enthusiast-oriented Civic variant, whose roots in America date to the 1985 debut of the Civic CRX Si (see Civic Si History). The new Civic Si is based on the 10th-generation Civic platform, the most comprehensive and performance-minded remake in the model's 44-year history, and substantially advanced the fun, fast and agile nature of Si.

The 2017 Si Sedan and Si Coupe are the first Si models to use turbocharged engines, utilizing an upgraded, high-boost version of the 1.5-liter direct-injected and turbocharged new powerplant that made its U.S. debut in the 2016 Civic Sedan. The new Honda AP2 engine offers drivers more power and torque down low, with a minimum of turbo lag along with a fatter power band, compared to previous, normally aspirated models.  All Si models come equipped with a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission.

The new Civic Si also benefits from the extensive remake of the 10th-generation Civic platform – which was benchmarked against luxury C-class competitors for ride, handling, steering precision and high-speed stability – and are further enhanced by Si-exclusive chassis tuning and engineering and Si-exclusive performance bits, including a helical limited-slip differential and new Adaptive Damper System and variable-ratio electric power steering. The upgraded performance capabilities of Si are matched by extensive exterior and interior upgrades that strongly distinguish Si from its more mainstream Sedan and Coupe counterparts.

Powertrain and chassis
Powering the Civic Si is a high-performance, high-torque 1.5-liter, directed-injected and turbocharged DOHC in-line 4-cylinder engine with dual variable cam timing (dual VTC). Mated to a short-throw, 6-speed manual transmission, the powertrain provides a thrilling new driving experience with more low-end grunt and increased torque output across the engine's full rev range compared to the previous Si. Peak output of 205 horsepower1 arrives 1300 rpm lower in the rev range, and the greatly increased peak torque of 192 lb-ft2 (+18 lb-ft) is produced 2300 rpm earlier and sustained over 70 percent of the rev range.

Allowing full utilization of the powertrain, the 2017 Civic Si's rigid body includes highly upgraded chassis and drive components, including a dual-pinion adaptive electric power steering system with variable ratios, sport-tuned suspension, an adaptive damper system, a helical limited-slip differential, larger front brake rotors (12.3-inch) and wider 235/40 R18 tires. In addition to adaptive dampers, suspension upgrades over the Civic EX-T include stiffer spring rates, more rigid stabilizer bars (+7 percent front, +26 percent rear), and solid front and rear compliance bushings, the latter shared with the track-focused Civic Type R.

The 2017 Civic Si now features two driving mode options – Normal and Sport – allowing the driver to choose vehicle dynamic characteristics according to their tastes and the driving environment. From the more comfort-oriented yet well controlled default Normal Mode, the Sport Mode adjusts the suspension damping characteristics plus steering and throttle response for a more taut and direct driving experience.

Sporty design and styling
Upping the sporty style quotient from the standard Civic Sedan and Coupe, the Si models feature an aggressive gloss black "solid wing" front fascia with larger lower air intakes, 18-inch split 5-spoke alloy wheels with high contrast finish, 235-series low-profile tires, and a chrome center-mounted hexagonal exhaust finisher. At the rear, the Si Sedan includes a unique rear fascia and a decklid wing spoiler incorporating a LED brake light. The Si Coupe continues the Civic Coupe's distinctive full-width light bar and adds a prominent raised wing spoiler.

The Civic Si interior features Si-exclusive bolstered front sport seats with red stitching, including stitched Si logos and integrated head restraints. The red stitching carries through to the doors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and shift boot. The Si interior also features a red driver's TFT meter and audio system illumination, alloy sport pedals and matte carbon-look trim on the instrument panel.

Interior Comfort, Convenience and Connectivity
The new Civic Si variants offer premium comfort and convenience features building off the EX-T Civic Sedan and EX-T Civic Coupe, including a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen that serves as the nerve center for control of audio, HVAC and other functions. The Display Audio is integrated with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ platforms, providing seamless integration of smartphone features and functions, including app-based navigation, streaming audio, voice-controlled search capabilities, and access to a host of Apple- or Google-approved smartphone apps. All Si models feature a 450-watt, 10-speaker premium sound system with AM/FM, SiriusXM® Radio, HD Radio™ and Pandora® capability.

New for the 2017 Civic Si is a Driver Information Interface (DII) that adds a range of selectable real-time information designed to support performance driving. The 7-inch color TFT can display throttle input and brake input application in a graphic percentage format, turbocharger boost in pounds per square inch (psi), lap time (intended for use on closed circuits), race-inspired Rev-limit indicators, and a graphical G-Force gauge that provides a representation of acceleration, braking and cornering forces

In addition, the 2017 Civic Si Coupe and Sedan gain several premium features for the first time ever on a Si model including heated front seats (both cushion and seat back), dual-zone automatic climate control, Walk Away Auto Lock® and an electric parking brake with hill start assist.

Safety Performance
The 2017 Civic Si Coupe and Sedan are designed to provide a high level of collision safety performance in a wide variety of collision scenarios, including offset and oblique-angle frontal collisions as well as side and rear impacts. The Civic's safety performance starts with its class-leading forward visibility and precise, stable and predictable steering, handling and braking performance. Standard four-channel anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA)4 with traction control and Agile Handling Assist further enhance dynamic stability and emergency maneuvering and braking performance. The Civic Si received the highest NCAP 5-star Overall Vehicle Score.

Manufacturing
The 2017 Civic Si Coupe and Sedan for the U.S. market will be produced at Honda's plant in Ontario, Canada, using domestic and globally sourced parts. The Civic Si's 1.5-liter turbocharged engine is produced in Anna, Ohio, using domestic and globally sourced parts, at the largest automobile engine plant in Honda's global production network.

Honda Civic Si - History

Debuting for the 1985 model year, the original Honda Civic CRX Si brought a new focus on performance driving to the Honda lineup. Thirty-two years later, the eighth iteration of the Civic Si continues this long heritage of driving feel, heightened performance, agility, and passion for enthusiast drivers.

Since its launch, the Si (the initials stand for "Sport Injection") variants have energized and enhanced the last eight Civic generations. Successful in racing, magazine shootouts, and most especially with owners, the Si has solidly become the Civic for enthusiasts. The beauty of the Si has always been its combination of real-world usability, significant and palpable performance advantages, exclusive exterior and interior features, and a more connected overall driving experience for enthusiasts.

High points for Civic Si models over the years and Civic generations include:

3rd Generation Civic (1985 to 1987)
The Si's debut in the US market came in the form of the 1985 Civic CRX Si, a sporty 2-seat coupe developing 91 hp from its 1.5-liter SOHC inline-four engine with a 12-valve cross-flow head. Thanks to the popularity of the CRX Si, the following year a distinct Si model was added to the Civic Hatchback, broadening the sporty formula to the 4-seater format as well. Both models used Honda's advanced PGM-FI fuel injection.

4th Generation Civic (1988 to 1991)
A more powerful new 16-valve, 1.6-liter SOHC engine with multiport injection (first developing 105 hp and later 108 hp), an aerodynamic new body style, and 4-wheel double-wishbone style suspension defined the 1988 Civic CRX Si and the 1989 Civic Si Hatchback as more powerful and better-handling Hondas. The CRX continued as a 2-seater, while the Hatchback continued as a 4-seater. Sporty features included a larger-diameter exhaust system, front and rear stabilizer bars, and sport seats with deeper bolsters.

5th Generation Civic (1992 to 1995)
Starting in 1992, Honda's sporty nameplate became available as the Si Coupe and Si Hatchback only. Beside the departure of the CRX name, the big news for "92 was the adoption of the Civic's first SOHC VTEC engine, which displaced 1.6-liters and incorporated variable valve control in its single overhead camshaft layout. Besides a significantly broader powerband, the first VTEC-powered Si made 125 horsepower, a gain of over 15-percent compared to the previous Si model.

6th Generation Civic (1999 to 2000)
After the 1995 model year, the Si nameplate took a short break prior to returning for 1999. Thanks to its 1.6-liter DOHC VTEC design, output jumped to 160 hp at an aggressive 8000 rpm, with the Si model now available only as a coupe. Enabling this high-rpm performance were such technologies as high-silicon pistons and stronger connecting rods, a large-diameter throttle body, and improved intake and exhaust flow. Competition-derived chassis features included firmer springs and stabilizer bars, a front strut-tower brace, and low-profile 15-inch tires. Red-themed instruments added a serious edge to the Si's growing performance acumen.

7th Generation Civic (2002 to 2004)
Built in England, the 2.0-liter i-VTEC Civic Si Hatchback established a benchmark for broad performance with an emphasis on huge, usable torque from a lower rpm than before – in this case VTEC operation kicked in at 2300 rpm instead of 4500 as in the previous generation Si. This gave the new 2002 Si Hatchback, with its 25-percent larger and 20-percent torquier engine, more punch in the rpm range drivers use on an everyday basis. Welcome news for diehard enthusiasts were 5-bolt wheel hubs, the Civic's first 16-inch wheels, and the availability of a Honda Factory Performance (HFP) kit.

8th Generation Civic (2007 to 2011)
Thanks to the Si formula’s growing appeal, an Si Sedan finally joined the Si Coupe for the 2007 model year. Now boasting 197 hp, the 2.0-liter DOHC i-VTEC engine was paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and both Si models featured unique suspension tuning, a limited-slip differential, and aggressive styling touches and interior appointments to match their sporting mission. Vehicle Stability Assist, a hugely valuable driver assist feature, also debuted on the Si for 2007. A tantalizing opportunity for 2008 Si Sedan buyers was the limited run of 1,000 cars tuned by Mugen, a Japanese performance R&D firm affiliated with the Honda factory.

9th Generation Civic (2012 to 2015)
Continuing in Sedan and Coupe form, the Si received a displacement boost to 2.4 liters to become the largest and – at 201 hp – the most powerful models so far. As a result, the Si leapfrogged once again in popularity, all the while offering incredible fuel efficiency of up to 31 mpg on the highway. A mid-model styling change and a power bump (to 205 hp) reenergized the Si twins for 2014, while the Si Coupe received racing-inspired front and rear fascias, and a rear spoiler and diffuser.

Motorsports
The Civic Si has a great motor racing heritage, including: 23 class victories and 2 Manufactures titles in the Continental Tire Sports car competition; 40 class victories and 4 championships in the Pirelli World Challenge; and 9 SCCA national championships dating back to 1990.

Honda Civic Si - Powertrain

For the first time in Civic Si history, an advanced turbocharged engine powers the Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan. An enhanced version of the 1.5-liter 16-valve DOHC direct-injected turbocharged powerplant that powers EX-T, EX-L and Touring Civics, the new Si engine pushes performance on multiple fronts. It's rated at 205 hp at 5700 rpm and offers an impressive 192 lb-ft. of torque between 2100 and 5000 rpm. That's an increase of 31 hp and 25 lb.-ft. of torque, as compared to other 1.5-liter turbocharged Civic models.

The new Si also marks a bold shift in strategy when compared to the previous generation 2015 Civic Si. With a displacement reduction of 36-percent compared with the normally aspirated 2.4-liter engine that powered the previous Si, the new 1.5-liter engine is lighter, more compact and more efficient. With the help of a sophisticated, electronically controlled, intercooled turbocharging system, the new Si offers the same peak 205 horsepower as its predecessor, but at a lower, much more quickly accessible rpm. More important, the new turbo engine offers a decisive peak torque advantage over a far broader rpm range. The result is a highly responsive powertrain that advances the Si's fun-to-drive mission.

Of course, some things have not changed in the new Si. It is still offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual transmission for the maximum in driver control and tactile connection, though the all-new gearbox offers a slicker shift action—and revised ratios to suit the power delivery of the new turbocharged engine. And to help put power to the ground, as in the past, a helical limited-slip front differential is standard.

The Civic Si engine is EPA Tier3/Bin125 and CARB LEV 3/ULEV125 emissions compliant. The new, more efficient engine and transmission, along with improved aerodynamics and a major reduction in running resistance, result in substantially enhanced performance and fuel efficiency, compared to the previous generation (2015) Civic Si 2.4-liter. EPA fuel economy ratings1 are up across the board:

  • +6 mpg City (+27%)
  • +7 mpg Highway (+23%)
  • +7 mpg Combined (+28%)

Engine Architecture and Features
Turbocharged 1.5-Liter In-Line 4 Cylinder
The Civic Si's new DOHC 1.5-liter engine is the first turbocharged engine ever to be offered in a Si model. Closely related to the 1.5-liter turbocharged engine available in the 2017 Civic EX-T Coupe and Sedan, the Si powerplant is substantially upgraded to deliver an increase of 31 horsepower and 25 lb.-ft. of torque. With direct injection, low-inertia high-flow mono scroll turbo system with electrical waste-gate and dual Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC), the turbocharged Civic Si powerplant develops the horsepower and torque of a much larger engine.

Turbocharged 1.5-Liter Engine and Intercooler

Compared to the significantly larger normally-aspirated 2.4-liter engine that was standard in the previous-generation Civic Si (model year 2015), the 2017 Si engine develops the same peak horsepower (205) but at a much lower and more quickly accessible rpm (5700 rpm compared to 7000 rpm). The new Si also develops 18 lb.-ft. more peak torque (192), and delivers it over a far greater engine speed range. In the new Si, peak torque hits at just 2100 rpm—less than half the engine speed (4400 rpm) of the previous generation 2.4-liter engine.

Specifically engineered for direct injection and turbocharging, the Si powerplant is designed to offer very high torque output from 2,100 rpm to 5,000 to maximize responsiveness and acceleration without the need for high engine revs. The Si's highly accessible power delivery is a key feature of its immediate power delivery and fun-to-drive nature.

The turbocharged Si 1.5-liter engine is designed to operate on premium unleaded fuel and is rated at 205 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 192 lb.-ft of torque between 2,100 and 5,000 rpm (SAE net). The Civic Si is rated by the EPA at 28/38/32 mpg1.

Cylinder Block and Crankshaft

The Civic Si's new 1.5-liter inline four has a lightweight die-cast aluminum block with individual reinforced main bearing caps to minimize weight. Cast-in iron cylinder liners provide long-lasting durability. Each journal on the lightweight forged-steel crankshaft is micropolished to reduce internal friction.

Pistons and Connecting Rods
The 1.5-liter engine's pistons help maintain stable combustion and contribute to improved efficiency with "cavity-shaped" crowns. The lightweight pistons have a carefully optimized skirt design to minimize reciprocating weight, which minimizes vibration and increases operating efficiency. The pistons are cooled by twin oil jets directed at the underside of each piston crown. A cooling gallery cast into the circumference of each piston helps provide superior heat resistance. Ion-plated piston rings help reduce friction for greater operating efficiency. Lightweight, high-strength steel connecting rods are heat-forged in one piece and then "crack separated" to create a lighter and stronger rod with an optimally fitted bearing cap.

Cylinder Head and Valvetrain
The direct-injected Civic Si 4-cylinder turbocharged engine has a lightweight DOHC cylinder head that is made of pressure-cast aluminum alloy. With exhaust port cast directly into the cylinder head, the need for a traditional separate exhaust manifold is eliminated. Compared to other 1.5-liter Civic turbocharged engines, which have a 10.6:1 compression ratio, the Civic Si has a lowered 10.3:1 ratio to allow it to reliably operate at a higher maximum boost pressure of 20.3 psi (16.5 psi on Civic EX-T).

A low-friction, silent-chain drives dual overhead cams and four valves per cylinder. The cam drive is maintenance free throughout the life of the engine. To help further reduce weight, thin-wall hollow camshafts are used.

To benefit fuel efficiency, emissions and power, the turbo engine utilizes sodium-filled exhaust valves. A hollow chamber within the valve contains sodium that is cooled by the exhaust-port cooling jacket. As the chamber reaches close to the valve head, the sodium helps to cool the entire valve. As the valve is internally cooled it doesn't need the enriched fuel mixture that was generally used in turbo engines to help cool the exhaust valve. The resultant leaner mixture reduces emissions, increases fuel efficiency and helps increase power.

The cylinder head includes smaller M12 sparkplugs, down from the more common M14, to save space and weight. The head also includes direct-injection multi-hole fuel injectors with a small diameter bore. Higher-pressure direct injection optimizes fuel atomization, allowing for more efficient combustion. To provide a high-tumble intake charge that further enhances combustion efficiency, both the intake port and piston crown have special designs.

The Civic Si turbocharged engine features Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) that can vary the timing of both the intake and exhaust camshafts independently. With the turbo engine's variable cam timing, the cam timing can be optimized to suit the driving conditions. Under light loads, valve overlap can be increased to reduce pumping losses and improve fuel efficiency. When engine speed is low and engine load is large, such as during initial acceleration, the amount of overlap is increased to boost the scavenging effect, which improves torque and responsiveness. When engine speed is high and engine load is also high, such as during full-throttle acceleration, the amount of valve overlap is reduced to increase engine output by improving both intake and scavenging.

Direct Injection System
The direct-injection system enables increased torque across the engine's full operating range along with higher fuel efficiency. The system features a compact, high-pressure, direct-injection pump that allows both high fuel flow and pulsation suppression, while variable pressure control optimizes injector operation. A multi-hole injector delivers fuel directly into each cylinder (not to the intake port, as in conventional port fuel injection designs), allowing for more efficient combustion.

The multi-hole injectors can create the ideal stoichiometric fuel/air mixture in the cylinders for good emissions control. Theoretically, a stoichiometric mixture has just enough air to completely burn the available fuel. Based on the operating conditions, the direct-injection system alters its function for best performance. Upon cold engine startup, fuel is injected into the cylinders on the compression stroke. This creates a weak stratified charge effect that improves engine start-up and reduces exhaust emissions before a normal operating temperature is reached.

Once the engine is fully warmed up, fuel is injected during the intake stroke for maximum power and fuel efficiency. This helps create a more homogeneous fuel/air mix in the cylinder that is aided by the high-tumble intake port design. This improves volumetric efficiency, and the cooling effect of the incoming fuel improves anti-knock performance.

Low Inertia Mono Scroll High-Flow Turbo System with Electronic Wastegate

Civic Si’s Turbocharger highlighted with “Hot” and “Cold” Airflow Paths

The turbocharged Civic Si engine employs a unique high-flow, high capacity turbo for maximum responsiveness. The Mono scroll housing design helps the turbo build boost even at relatively small throttle openings and low rpm. The electrically actuated wastegate allows boost pressure to be precisely controlled. With its lower compression ratio, the Civic Si's maximum boost pressure has been elevated to 20.3 psi (from 16.5 psi in Civic EX-T), substantially increasing maximum horsepower and torque.

A large air low-restriction intercooler is positioned low in the front of the car where it receives unobstructed airflow when the vehicle is in motion. Intake air travels from the air filter, to the turbo compressor, on to the intercooler, then to the engine's intake ports. The intercooler helps reduce the temperature of air entering the engine, making it denser for greater performance. To reduce weight, the turbo system is plumbed with rigid, lightweight resin composite inlet pipes to carry intake air to and from the intercooler.

Friction Reducing Technology
The Civic Si's engine makes use of friction-reducing technologies designed to improve engine efficiency. The outer skirts of lightweight aluminum pistons feature a low-friction coating applied in a unique pattern application. The result is reduced overall friction as the pistons move within the cylinder bores. Plateau honing further lowers the friction level between the pistons and the cylinders by creating an ultra-smooth surface. Plateau honing is a 2-stage machining process that uses two grinding processes instead of the more conventional single honing process. This also enhances the long-term wear characteristics of the engine. Low viscosity oil (0W-20) also reduces friction. Other contributors to overall operating efficiency are a special two-stage oil pump relief valve, low-friction oil seals, special low-drag piston ring design, low-friction cam chain and a lightweight crankshaft.

Drive-by-Wire Throttle System
The Civic Si's Drive-by-Wire throttle system replaces a conventional throttle cable with smart electronics that "connect" the accelerator pedal to a throttle valve inside the throttle body. The result is less under-hood clutter and lower weight, as well as quicker and more accurate throttle actuation. Plus, a specially programmed "gain" rate between the throttle pedal and engine offers improved drivability and optimized engine response to suit specific driving conditions.

Honda's Drive-by-Wire throttle system evaluates the current driving conditions by monitoring throttle pedal position, throttle valve position, engine speed (rpm) and road speed. This information is used to define the throttle control sensitivity that gives the Civic Si's throttle pedal a predictable and responsive feel that meets driver expectations.

With the Civic Si's drive mode selector positioned on the center console, the driver can choose between NORMAL and SPORT modes. In SPORT mode, the Si's Drive-by-Wire throttle system has a more aggressive profile targeted at performance driving.

Emissions Control
The Civic Si's engine meets the tough EPA Tier3/Bin125 and CARB LEV 3/ULEV125 emissions standards, and is certified to this level of emissions performance for 150,000 miles.

100,000+/- Mile Tune-up Intervals
The Civic Si's powerplant requires no scheduled maintenance for 100,000+/- miles or more, other than periodic inspections and normal fluid and filter replacements. The first tune-up includes water pump inspection, valve adjustment, and the installation of new spark plugs.

Maintenance Minder™ System
To eliminate unnecessary service stops while ensuring that the vehicle is properly maintained, the Civic Si has a Maintenance Minder™ system that continually monitors the vehicle's operating condition. When maintenance is required, the driver is alerted via a message on the Driver Information Interface (DII). (See the Interior Section for more information.)

6-Speed Manual Transmission
In keeping with the Si's enthusiast driver tradition, just one transmission is available, a quick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission (6MT). The unit offers smooth and precise shift feel and great efficiency. Compared to the closely related 6-speed manual transmission offered in the Civic EX-T, the Si transmission has more rigid bracket mounts to match the engine's higher horsepower and torque. Refinements to the shift linkage and selector mechanism produce a precise and smooth gear lever shift action while reducing stroke by 10 percent.

The 10th-generation Civic 6-speed manual transmission has been carefully engineered to deliver state-of-the-art performance and shift action, with reduced internal friction, tighter internal tolerances and improved synchronizers. The transmission also has a more rigid aluminum exterior case, higher-capacity ball bearings, stiffer gear shafts, and greater torque capacity – compared to the previous Civic Si transmission. A constant-mesh helical reverse gear mechanism significantly reduces noise when reverse is selected. A reverse lockout feature prevents the transmission from accidentally being shifted into reverse while the car is moving forward.

Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™)

Civic Si Coupe ACE™ Body Structure

As in all 2017 Civic models, Honda's proprietary Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body-structure enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal collisions in the Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan. ACE utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle, thus reducing the forces transferred to the passenger compartment. ACE channels frontal crash energy to both upper and lower structural elements, including the floor frame rails, side sills and A-pillars.

Crash Stroke
The ACE structure used on the Civic Si features a crash stroke technology developed by Honda engineers in the company's advanced safety research laboratory in Raymond. Ohio. With this crash stroke structure, in a frontal collision the lower section of the front vehicle frame hinges to direct the engine down and rearward, helping direct crash energy into the vehicle's floor while also minimizing cabin intrusion. This crucial piece of safety engineering effectively adds 80mm (3.2 in) of additional energy-absorbing "crash stroke" to the front of the vehicle.

Besides helping the Civic Si receive the highest ratings in the rigorous federal crash tests, the crash stroke structure enabled designers to develop the Civic Si's body design to feature a short front overhang and short hood-line for a unique and exciting appearance, excellent outward visibility and improved handling. (See the Safety and Driver Assistive section for more information.)

High Body Rigidity
The high bending and torsional rigidity of the 2017 Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan body structures (+25 percent over previous Civic Si) allows for fine-tuning of the vehicles' suspension systems for superior handling performance. The stiff body structure allows the chassis to work more effectively and reduces the suspension action needed to control body motion. Another benefit of the rigid body structure is a quieter and more comfortable ride for passengers, with less Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) felt over a wide range of driving conditions.

The localized lateral stiffness of the Si Coupe's rear body is 4.6 percent stiffer than in the Si Sedan, primarily due to the differences in the rear body design, and this has significant dynamic benefits.

Some key body structure features include:
Under the Hood

  • A lower stiffener, located behind the engine on the front bulkhead, improves handling

In the Unibody

  • Certain connection areas where the A-pillars meet the floor sills, and the B-pillars meet both the floor sills and roof rails, reduce idle vibration and booming
  • Large body panels are shaped using computer aided engineering (CAE) to reduce booming
  • Gussets positioned inside the rear quarter areas of the unibody reduce road noise
  • An internal rear structural ring stiffens the unibody for improved handling
  • Short-pitch welding places spot welds 20mm (0.8 in) apart in critical areas of the unibody, compared to 40mm to 45mm (1.6 in to 1.8 in) traditional spacing, increasing stiffness and durability

Underneath the Vehicle

  • The floor pan is made of 590-MPa high-strength steel to provide a lighter yet stronger overall structure
  • Floor cross-members positioned under the driver and front passenger's seating area improve ride comfort
  • A lateral cross-member and damper structure, located between the rear wheels, improves handling
  • A cross-car brace, located at the front of the vehicle, improves handling

Aerodynamics
The Civic Si combines athletic and sporty styling with advanced aerodynamic features to provide a unique and exciting blend of design and functionality. Compared to the Civic EX-T models on which they are based, key aerodynamic details for the Si Coupe and Si Sedan includes unique front and rear fascias, front chin spoiler, and decklid mounted wing spoiler. Above and beyond the Civic Coupe and Sedan’s inherently efficient aerodynamics, the new Civic Si aero package directly reduces coefficient of lift (CL) for improved high-speed dynamic performance.

As with the other current Civic models, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to measure aerodynamic efficiency during the design phase, followed by scale-model wind tunnel testing and finally by full-scale wind-tunnel testing. Two critical aero gains from this process include a reduction in engine-room and underbody drag (CdA), which helps improve both fuel efficiency and interior quietness.

Specially shaped components at the front of the vehicle guide airflow through the radiator and into the engine's cold-air intake, while channeling the remaining airflow over, around and under the vehicle. Along with the narrower A-pillars and flush-mounted glass, these contribute to the Civic's efficient passage through the air. The relaxed slope of the Si Coupe’s rear roofline and rear window further improves aerodynamic efficiency.

Underbody Airflow
Along with the other current Civic models, the new Si Coupe and Si Sedan feature the flattest underbody of any gasoline-powered Honda production vehicle. A molded under-panel is positioned directly beneath the front fascia, smoothly starting the rearward flow of air underneath the vehicle. An aluminum under-tray is positioned underneath the engine and transmission and features a duct that allows ambient cooling airflow to the hydraulic engine mount. Dual acoustic fiber side under-panels extend from behind the front wheels to just ahead of the rear wheels, further smoothing the airflow as it travels rearward, while also reducing wind noise in the passenger cabin.

Lateral strakes located ahead of each wheel and tire (8.5 inches wide in front, and 3.5 inches wide in the rear) help deflect airflow around the tires for additional aerodynamic efficiency gains.

T-Direction Welding
Applied to the forward edge of the front door hinge pillars, just behind the front wheel openings, a "T-direction welding" technique helps the 2017 Civic earn top ratings in the rigorous IIHS Small Overlap Frontal collision test. Instead of using lateral overlapping welded joints on the hinge pillars, which would be negatively affected by the wheel moving rearward and striking the pillar in an offset frontal collision, the hinge pillars instead use a longitudinal welded seam designed to withstand sheer forces generated in such a collision.

Class-leading Forward Visibility
The narrow A-pillar section on the 2017 Civic Si helps provide a class-leading 84.3 degrees of forward visibility (the angle made by drawing lines from the driver's eye point to the outboard edges of the A pillars). Safety performance is maintained through the pillars' shape, the precise design of load pathways during a frontal collision or rollover, and the use of 1500 MPa hot-stamped ultra-high-strength steel for the A-pillars.

High-Strength Steel
Multiple steel grades are used in the Civic Si's body construction to help achieve excellent overall vehicle dynamics, optimize safety performance, and lower NVH. Materials range from five different grades of steel, including premium hot-stamp steel and ultra-high-strength steel used in the unibody, to aluminum for the front bumper beam. All were chosen to achieve the best combination of strength, rigidity, dynamic performance and light weight. Fully 63 percent of the Si Coupe body structure is composed of high-strength steel, while 64 percent of the Si Sedan body structure is composed of high-strength steel.

Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) Countermeasures
The latest Civic platform takes noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) countermeasures to the next level, positioning it at the top of its competitive set. Both Civic Si models feature strategically placed body sealants (see below). Additional NVH enhancements on all models include acoustic separators inside the A- and B-pillars, while a sound-insulating acoustic windshield (see below) further aids overall cabin quietness. (See the Interior section for more information.)

Engine Compartment Isolation
Measures to isolate sound and heat emanating from within the engine compartment include dedicated front, side and rear hood seals, strategically placed heat baffles, a hood insulator panel, an engine undercover, and dedicated insulation within the instrument panel. Inside the vehicle, a one-piece molded insulated carpet liner adds further to exceptional heat isolation and noise reduction for the 2017 Civic SI.

Acoustic Windshield
Special laminated acoustic glass is used for the Civic Si windshield to help reduce noise entering the cabin. Tuned specifically to attenuate wind-noise frequencies, the windshield glass uses an outer layer of 2.0mm safety glass, a 0.7mm thick middle layer of acoustic polyvinyl butyral (PVB), and a 1.8mm safety-glass inner layer for a total thickness of 4.5mm. This helps the Civic Si place at the top of its class in wind-noise performance. The windshield also incorporates UV light-absorbing technology. In addition, flush-mounted 4.0mm tempered front door glass and 3.5mm tempered rear door glass help reduce wind noise in the cabin. The one-touch power moonroof with tilt feature uses 3.5mm tinted and tempered glass.

Sound-absorbing Undercovers
A special baffle plate located beneath the center of the floor pan and felt fender inner liners further attenuates wind and road noise.

Body Sealing
The 2017 Civic Si has an unprecedented level of body sealing to dramatically reduce the levels of noise inside the vehicle. Throughout the unibody are 9.2 sq. in. (coupe) to 9.3 sq.in. (sedan) of weld seals and other sealers to reduce vibration and the transmission of noise.

Additional measures include:

  • Pillar separators seal the hollow A- and B-pillars to reduce the transmission of noise from the floor area into the passenger cabin.
  • Triple door sealing utilizes 360-degree molded door seals to reduce wind noise and improve isolation.
  • New door gap seals at the rear edges of the doors join triple-sealed door openings and lower door-edge seals in keeping wind noise from entering the cabin.
  • Multiple air leak reduction moldings and clips are used at key locations where the side windows slide into the doors, reducing the possibility of audible air leaks occurring in these locations.
  • Along with internal bracing, acoustic hole seals fill open areas inside the door structures, significantly reducing the amount of wind and road noise and vibration that can reach the cabin. The same Thinsulate™ material that is used in the doors is also used to reduce sound transmission through the roof, the body A- and B-pillars, and the rear tray.

Honda Civic Si - Chassis

Using the 10th-generation Civic EX-T chassis as a starting point, the 2017 Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan add significant technological and operational bandwidth, creating a pair of new models that expand the Civic Coupe and Sedan's dynamic envelope. The MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension are upgraded with firmer settings and benefit from the first application of an Adaptive Damper System (ADS) to Civic. Integral to Civic Si's driving mode system, ADS lets the driver select the damping characteristics of the suspension to suit their pleasure – smooth and easy city driving in NORMAL mode (the default setting whenever the Civic Si is started) or taut and direct handling response in SPORT mode.

Linked to the ADS function, when in SPORT mode the Civic Si's steering function firms up the dual-pinion variable-ratio electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering (EPS), adding a higher level of feedback and feel for the driver. Larger front and rear disc brakes, Civic Si exclusive 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels and tenacious 235/40R18 tires (all-season standard with summer tires available) likewise expand the Si's performance envelope. Front and Rear Suspension
Specially equipped with an Adaptive Damper System (see below), the Civic Si front and rear suspension system provides inspired handling that puts the Civic Si at the top of its class, and in the league of benchmarked European competitors, on city streets as well as on the most challenging winding roads. Front MacPherson struts optimize component packaging and crash performance, while a rear multi-link system helps maximize second-row seating and cargo space – all while also providing inspired handling characteristics. Front and rear stabilizer bars improve turn-in response while reducing body roll during cornering. The stabilizer bars are bonded to their mounting bushings and use low-friction connecting links for smoother operation.

MacPherson Strut Front Suspension

Civic Si Front Suspension Detail

The MacPherson strut front suspension is engineered to provide a highly responsive and engaging driving experience. Performance-calibrated geometry ensures a high degree of quickness, precision and stability. The lower suspension arms are connected to the subframe and to the body via solid compliance bushings, which provide the ideal combination of handling responsiveness and precision. All front suspension arms and the front hub carriers are steel, and both Civic Si models use a tubular front stabilizer bar.

Compared to the overall Civic model range, the new Civic Si front suspension has the following differences:

  • 7-percent stiffer spring rate
  • Adaptive Damper System (ADS)
  • 18-percent stiffer upper damper mounts
  • 7-percent stiffer stabilizer bar rate

Multi-Link Rear Suspension
The multi-link rear suspension includes stamped-steel arms, cast aluminum hub carriers and a stabilizer bar. Mounted on a rigid subframe, the rear suspension provides highly precise handling in city driving, sport driving and emergency maneuvers, together with a composed, flat ride. The trailing arms are located on the unibody using solid compliance bushings for optimum handling precision. A solid rear stabilizer bar helps provide crisp turn-in along with body roll control.

Compared to the overall Civic model range, the new Civic Si rear suspension has the following differences:

  • 32-percent stiffer spring rate
  • Solid front and rear compliance bushings (rear shared with Civic Type R)
  • Adaptive Damper System (ADS)
  • High-stiffness upper control arms – common with Civic Type R
  • 26-percent stiffer stabilizer bar rate

Adaptive Damper System (ADS)
The Civic Si has new Adaptive Dampers that are integrated into the driving mode functions. Similar in appearance to the standard Civic's dampers, the Adaptive Dampers have electronically adjustable hydraulic damping that lets the driving mode automatically fine-tune ride and handling to driver preferences. A button on the center console allows the driver to choose between NORMAL and SPORT modes. As directed by the driving mode controller, an electric actuator integrated into each damper governs hydraulic fluid movement inside the unit. Damper settings are automatically calibrated to the driving mode setting to achieve the following benefits:

Civic Si’s Driver Selectable SPORT Mode

  • NORMAL – Provides an ideal everyday balance of ride and handling for a wide range of conditions.
  • SPORT – Firmer damper settings flatten and stabilize the vehicle body during rapid steering inputs and maneuvers, which noticeably improves tactile feel, handling precision and overall responsiveness.

Suspension Bushings
In front, the lower control arms pivot uses solid bushings to provide the exacting precision required for sharp, nimble handling. For the front suspension only, a specially ventilated under-cover allows airflow to cool the bushings, ensuring more consistent performance in all ambient temperature conditions, as well as enhanced long-term durability.

An additional duct, located near the middle of the aluminum front under-panel, cools the engine's torque rod bushing, reducing operating temperatures and ensuring greater durability.

Dual-Pinion Variable-Ratio Electric Power-Assisted Rack-and-Pinion Steering
The Electric Power Steering (EPS) incorporates dual-pinion gears and a variable gear ratio for outstanding steering feel and handling performance. Compared to a traditional single-pinion steering system, the dual-pinion EPS utilizes the physical steering input from the driver as well as from a supplemental electric motor. A non-contact torque sensor measures the driver's steering effort and an ECU determines how much electric motor assist to add, with the result being seamless, natural feeling steering in all situations.

The steering ratio is variable over a 17-percent range with a final full off-center ratio of 10.93:1. This provides a quick 2.11 turns lock-to-lock, which minimizes hand movement and steering effort when turning, parking or maneuvering. High steering-mount stiffness and a robust 30mm steering column diameter further enhance steering precision and feel.

The Civic Si models have a larger electric motor and unique EPS tuning in comparison to the other Civic models. In NORMAL mode, the Civic Si's EPS delivers a smooth, natural turning and handling response, which transforms to a noticeably more direct and linear feel when the driving mode is set to SPORT. (See the Powertrain section for more information.)

An integral part of the Civic Si's standard driving mode system, the Electric Power Steering automatically firms up when the mode is changed to "SPORT" from "NORMAL." The benefit for the Civic Si driver is firmer steering effort and substantially more direct feeling through the wheel.

Straight Driving Assist
Straight Driving Assist reduces the steering effort required when driving on a sloped or crowned road. When the Straight Driving Assist system detects that continuous steering effort is being applied to keep the car driving along a slope, the Electric Power Steering system applies motor assist to reduce driver steering effort to the same level as is required on a flat road.

4-wheel Disc Brakes with ABS, EBD and Brake Assist
Both Civic Si models are equipped with 4-wheel disc brakes with 4-channel ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The system provides a comfortable and refined feel at low speeds, predictable and easy operation on the highway, a sporty, fun-to-drive feel on winding roads, and a reassuring high-performance stopping in emergency situations.

The braking system incorporates larger discs than the standard Civic – 12.3-inch diameter ventilated front rotors (1-inch thickness) clamped by single-piston calipers, and 11.1-inch diameter solid rear rotors (0.4-inch thickness) paired with single-piston calipers. Optimized master cylinder and brake-caliper piston diameters contribute to a short, firm pedal stroke and excellent feel, while also helping to maintaining the power of the braking system. The low-friction design of the brake calipers reduces energy losses when the brakes are not in use, directly improving fuel efficiency.

Civic Si Front Shock and Brake Assembly

The 4-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) independently modulates braking power at each wheel to help the driver retain steering control during heavy braking. The Brake Assist system recognizes emergency or heavy braking situations and almost instantly applies full braking force when appropriate to help shorten braking distance. (See the Safety and Driver Assistive section for more information.)

Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control
Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) is an Electronic Stability Control system that works in conjunction with the Civic Si's Drive-by-Wire™ throttle and its 4-channel ABS systems to enhance control capability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking, cornering or when the driver makes a sudden maneuver.

In conjunction with the Civic Si's helical limited-slip differential, VSA provides an additional limited-slip effect for the driving wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction.

The driver can reduce the traction control effectiveness to allow more wheel slip by pressing the VSA button should the vehicle become stuck; ABS remains fully operational at all times. (See the Safety and Driver Assistive section for more information.)

Agile Handling Assist
Standard on both Civic Si models, Agile Handling Assist selectively uses the vehicle's brakes to improve initial turning response and overall cornering ability. Agile Handling Assist utilizes brake vectoring to improve corner traceability and confident handling feel. By applying braking force to the inside wheels during cornering at high lateral G, the system creates a yaw moment, thus generating more turning force and reducing understeer.

Hill Start Assist
The Hill Start Assist function helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when the driver switches from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal while the vehicle is stopped on a hill. Hill Start Assist automatically activates when the vehicle senses a certain incline and is fully stopped in any forward gear when facing up hill or reverse gear when facing downhill. The system uses a longitudinal G-sensor along with a wheel speed sensor to control the hydraulic brake modulator. Hill Start Assist, when activated, will release the brakes when the driver depresses the throttle or if the driver doesn't press the accelerator after a few seconds.

Electric Parking Brake (EPB)
The standard Electric Parking Brake (EPB) is simpler, more convenient and comfortable to use than a traditional parking brake. The EPB also frees up center console space, allowing a higher console and an extended armrest length.

Automatic Brake Hold
When activated, Automatic Brake Hold retains brake pressure when the vehicle comes to a stop such as at a traffic light or in heavy traffic. This frees the driver from continually pressing the brake pedal to maintain the vehicle in a stopped position, a significant improvement in driving enjoyment.

Operating the system requires two simple actions from the driver:

  • Activating/deactivating the system via a switch on the center console
  • Pressing on the brake pedal until the vehicle comes to a stop

Releasing the clutch pedal while the transmission is in gear releases the brake pressure.

Wheels and Tires
The Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan ride on P235/40R18 tires – the widest and lowest-profile rubber ever fitted to a production Civic Si – mounted to 18 x 8.0-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. The tires are 20mm wider, and the wheels are one-inch larger in diameter and one-inch wider, than the Civic EX-T models upon which the Civic Si models are based.

The standard tires carry an all-season M+S rating, making them suitable for year-round use in all weather and conditions. The standard Civic Si tire is a Goodyear Eagle Sport All-Season, developed cooperatively with Honda engineers and the tire company. Despite being wider, the tires maintain a low rolling resistance while also helping to reduce road noise and vibration. Available Goodyear Eagle F1 summer tires offer superior handling performance in dry conditions.

Wheel Design
The Civic Si's 18 x 8.0-inch aluminum alloy wheels feature a split 5-spoke design. The wheels are asymmetrical, with their aerodynamically designed spokes uniquely matching the left and right sides of the vehicle for a dynamic, windswept look. The wheels feature a painted gloss black finish with machined silver spoke edges for a high-contrast, dramatic appearance.

A summary of the 2017 Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan's wheel and tire sizes includes:

Civic Si Coupe

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • 235/40R18 all-season tires
  • Available 235/40R18 summer tires

Civic Si Sedan

  • 18-inch aluminum wheels
  • 235/40R18 all-season tires
  • Available 235/40R18 summer tires

Tire Repair Kit
The Civic Si features an easy-to-use tire repair kit in lieu of a spare tire. This reduces weight and increases trunk volume, and simplifies temporary repairs in the event of a flat tire. Honda Roadside Assistance supports tire repairs. In addition, a T125/70R17 space- and weight-saving temporary spare tire is available.

Low-Friction Wheel Bearings
Civic Si wheel hubs feature low-friction bearings that measurably reduces rolling resistance, which directly contributes to fuel-efficiency for all models.

Exhaust
The Civic Si uses a dedicated exhaust system. Twin rear-mounted silencers and a single center exhaust outlet improves gas flow, helping to enable the higher power output of the turbocharged engine, while also creating a more powerful exhaust sound in mid- and high-rpm ranges. A bright finisher adds visual appeal at the rear of the vehicle. (See the Powertrain section for more information.)

Fuel Tank
The 12.4-gallon fuel tank and fuel lines are molded of high-density polyethylene for low weight, freedom from corrosion, impact resistance and resistance to fuel vapor losses. The tank and filler pipe are formed as a single unit, reducing weight and complexity, while further improving safety in the event of a collision. Additionally, the tank is positioned ahead of the rear wheels to help guard against collision damage. A high-efficiency fuel pump is housed inside the tank, and the fuel filter is a lifetime design that never needs replacement. An integrated baffle system positioned inside the tank reduces the sound of fuel sloshing.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
Both 2017 Civic Si models use an indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which uses the ABS wheel-speed sensors to continually monitor the rotational speed of each wheel. Because a tire with low pressure rotates more quickly than one with a higher pressure, by comparing these values with a specifically designed computer algorithm, indirect TPMS can determine when a tire is low on pressure. When this occurs, a symbol illuminates on the instrument panel warns the driver. Special logic included in the TPMS processor is designed to eliminate false warnings.

Honda Civic Si - Interior

Like all 10th generation Civic models, the new Civic Si benefits from Honda's vehicle packaging expertise. The Civic interior – with its spaciousness, smart design, comfortable fit and intuitive controls – has always been a competitive strength. And in the Civic Si, that interior architecture has a clearly defined sporting flavor, with bold black seating with red accent stitching, racing inspired alloy pedals, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and red themed instrumentation. Performance driving is supported with selectable real-time information, including turbocharger boost gauge, G-Force gauge and Rev-limit indicator.

With 88.6 (Coupe) and 95.0 (Sedan) cubic feet of passenger cabin volume, the Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan top the compact-class for interior space and comfort, with class-leading headroom, legroom, shoulder clearance and side head clearance. Rear-seat passengers will appreciate newly shaped front seats with a narrower upper profile (in the shoulder area) and smaller integrated head restraints that lend the rear cabin a more open, airy feel. In keeping with the Civic Si's sporting mission, both the Coupe and Sedan have special high bolstered front seats that enhance lateral support during aggressive cornering.

Both the Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan offer roomy trunk utility. The Civic Si Coupe has a trunk capacity of 11.9 cubic feet and the Civic Sedan has a trunk capacity of 14.7 cubic feet – both among the largest in the competitive class. Spacious enough to easily accommodate four large golf bags, the trunk area in both Coupe and Sedan is easy to access and use, with a low lift-over height and wide opening. Both Civic Si models feature a 60/40 split and folding rear seatback.

Interior Materials
The new Civic Si interior takes the refinement of Honda's most affordable sedan in an aggressive, sporting direction. The Civic Si interior features Si-exclusive front sport seats with red stitching, including stitched Si logos. The red sport stitching carries through to the doors, leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift boot, and aluminum and leather shift knob. The Si interior also features unique red instrumentation and audio system illumination. Alloy sport pedals, carbon-look accents and titanium silver details highlight the Si's performance attitude.

Interior Design
In both Coupe and Sedan, the new Civic Si interior blends a dynamic and wide layout with smoothly integrated technology features and-high quality materials. Handsome new instrumentation with a red Si performance theme is paired with a full-color 7-inch Driver Information Interface (DII) display and a 7-inch color touchscreen Display Audio system with a clean and sleek appearance.

The Civic has always been known for its user-friendly design, and the new generation Si builds on that reputation. Like the other 10-generation Civic models with completely redesigned packaging, the Civic Si has a more open roomy feel. A redesigned instrument panel made possible a more compact climate control system that opens up added knee room, and the tandem distance (distance between the front and rear seat hip point) is increased 4 inches in the Si Coupe and by 1.8 inches in the Si Sedan versus the previous generation Civic Si models.

All important systems and controls in the Civic are positioned within easy reach of the driver. Controls for the systems used most frequently – audio, cruise control, Bluetooth®3 HandsFreeLink® and intelligent Multi-Information Display – are conveniently positioned on the Si's leather-wrapped steering wheel. The main instrumentation is an easy-to-read analog design, supplemented with digital and graphic displays. Typical of Honda interior design, the soft-touch switchgear of the Civic is engineered to deliver a high-quality feel and positive action.

Interior Color
The Civic Si's performance oriented interior is offered in black fabric with black/gray carbon-pattern inserts on the front seats, highlighted by red stitching. Carbon-look trim and titanium silver painted accents adorn the instrument panel.

Front Seats
The Civic Si's unique front bucket seats are designed to provide welcoming support for a wide range of body types, along with enhanced secure lateral support for aggressive cornering. Compared to the seats in other Civic models, the Si special seats feature added internal side structures in the base and seatback to better support the expanded side bolsters and integrated head restraints. Red stitched "Si" logos in the seatbacks also set them apart.

Civic Si Exclusive Sport Seats

New seat frame designs are 17-percent lighter compared to the previous generation Si, and are more comfortable and more adjustable. A relocated seatback recline pivot point improves comfort, and the range of the seat bottom height adjustment has been increased by 10mm (0.4 in). To help improve the forward view and create a feeling of openness for rear seat passengers, the front seatbacks have a narrower upper profile and smaller integrated headrests. The Civic Si seats feature fabric seating surfaces for breathability and comfort.

The driver's seat is manually adjustable for fore-and-aft, seatback angle and height adjustment. Additionally, heated front seats are available for the first time on the Civic Si. The 3-level front seat heater controls are positioned within easy reach, just below the climate control system controls.

For easy access to the second row of seating, The Civic Si Coupe passenger-side seat has a convenient one-touch walk-in feature.

Split-Folding Rear Seats
The Civic Si's roomy second-row seating is designed for maximum comfort and versatility, with a folding seatback. In both Coupe and Sedan Si models, a 60/40 split and folding design makes it easy to accommodate passengers or long cargo.

Center Console
The Civic Si interior offers a range of convenient storage features for the driver and passengers. The center console is specially engineered to offer a sporty appearance coupled with versatile usability. With the prevalence of smartphones in most people's lives, the console is engineered around a "tech center" theme. Up front, it has a 2-tier smartphone tray with a wire management pass-through for organized connectivity. A rubber mat helps secure a phone and LED lighting is included for nighttime visibility. There's also an additional phone storage pocket on the driver's side.

An electronic parking brake replaces a conventional manual parking brake lever, freeing up more console space for a larger armrest and greater storage space. The main storage compartment is topped by a sliding, deeply padded armrest. A pair of cup holders are centrally located, and can accommodate large 42-ounce cups when the padded armrest is placed in the rearmost position. By sliding the adjustable cup holder rearward, there's space to accommodate even a large sports drink bottle. Inside the console, a small item tray slides fore and aft the full length of the console. With the cup holder removed, the console offers a class leading 7.2-liters of storage, enough to accommodate iPads and other large items.

Trunk
The Civic Si Coupe has a trunk capacity of 11.9 cubic feet and the Civic Si Sedan has a trunk capacity of 14.7 cubic feet – both among the largest in the competitive class. Spacious enough to easily accommodate four large golf bags, the trunk areas in both the Si Coupe and Si Sedan are easy to access and use. Inside, the cargo floor is longer front to rear, and the vertical height of the cargo compartment has increased when compared to the previous generation Si models. A 60/40 split and folding rear seatback makes it easy to expand the cargo area. The trunk is carpeted and lined, and a temporary spare is located in a well under a removable section of the cargo-area floor.

Steering Wheel
The leather-wrapped Si steering wheel incorporates the most commonly used controls, allowing the driver to keep their hands on the wheel and their attention on the road. Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® and audio system controls are located on the left side of the steering wheel, and include a touchpad control that makes is easy to scroll and select items that appear on the audio screen. Cruise control controls are on the right and Driver Information Interface (DII) controls are located on the left side. The steering wheel offers manual tilt and telescopic adjustment.

Shift Lever
Historically, all Civic Si models have had manual transmissions, to give the driver maximum control for performance driving. In the 2017 Civic Si the shift knob is crafted from aluminum alloy and leather, for a performance look and feel. The drive mode selector button nearby lets the driver choose between NORMAL and SPORT driving modes.

Power Windows, Lock and Mirrors

Power windows are standard equipment on all Si models and include auto-up and -down operation on the driver's and front passenger's windows. Power door locks and power mirrors are also standard equipment on all Si models and include heated exterior mirrors. Smart entry is also standard.

One-Touch Power Moonroof with TiltFeature
All Civic Si models have a standard one-touch power moonroof with tilt feature that will fully open or close with a single touch of the switch. (See the Body and Exterior section for more information.)

Climate Control Systems
All Civic Si models have a standard automatic climate control system now featuring a refrigerant with a much lower GWP (Global Warming Potential). To help conserve energy, the system employs a Variable Displacement Compressor (VDC). Unlike a conventional compressor which can only operate at 100-percent and must be switched on and off frequently to conserve fuel when the cooling load is relatively low, the VDC can vary its output based on the cooling needs, resulting in greater efficiency, reduced drag on the engine and smoother climate-control performance.

For the optimal comfort of both the driver and front-seat passenger the system features dual-zone operation. In addition to physical controls, the Display Audio touchscreen also incorporates climate control functions.

Sliding Sunvisors
To provide more flexible shading from the sun, all Civics Si models come standard with sliding sunvisors. The driver and front passenger sunvisors can now be moved along their mounting shafts, with 3.9 inch range of motion, to provide perpendicular shade for the eyes even when the front seats are in their rear-most position.

Meters
All Si models have a unique red-themed central Thin-Film Transistor (TFT) Driver Information Interface (DII) color display that depicts an analog tachometer, digital speedometer and additional selectable information. The instrumentation offers two distinct looks, depending on which drive mode has been selected using the console-mounted switch, NORMAL or SPORT.

In SPORT mode, the Ambient Meter (located above the Driver Information Interface) illuminates Red and flashes as the engine nears the rev-limit.

Driver Information Interface (DII)
The Civic Si instrument panel provides important vehicle information via a Driver Information Interface (DII) positioned centrally in the meter panel. Controls positioned on the left side of the steering wheel allow the driver to cycle the DII display through multiple screens of information.

On the 2017 Civic Si, the Driver Information Interface includes a range of selectable real-time information designed to support performance driving. The 7-inch TFT screen can display throttle input and brake input application in a graphic percentage format, turbocharger boost in pounds per square inch (psi), a race-inspired Rev-limit indicator, a graphical G-Force gauge providing a representation of acceleration, braking and cornering forces, and a lap timer (intended for use on closed circuits). The lap timer is activated using the directional pad on the left side of the steering wheel.

The intuitive and easy-to-use touchscreen lets users swipe, tap and pinch – just like on a tablet or smartphone – to control the vehicle's audio system, display settings and other advanced features. The 7-inch touchscreen is a special high-contrast, high definition IPS display with a high viewing angle for better legibility.

All Civic Si models features a 450 watt, 10-speaker premium audio system that is also found in Civic Touring model grade. Premium 6.7-inch full-range speakers are positioned in the front doors and two in the rear deck plus one 3.1-inch speaker in the information panel. Two 1.5-inch tweeters are positioned near the A-pillars and two more are located on the rear deck, and a 7.9-inch subwoofer is placed in the center of the rear deck.

The system offers most popular audio formats, including AM/FM, HondaLink content, Pandora®, Bluetooth® streaming audio, and compatibility with the Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ platforms. SiriusXM® and HD Radio® are also standard.

Icons resembling smartphone apps are displayed on the high-definition, capacitive touchscreen, making the interface intuitive and easy to use. Interfaces for standard internet-sourced music and media options, such as Pandora® can be displayed and controlled on the Display Audio interface, with the ability to create personalized stations, tap to "like" songs, and view album artwork directly from the touchscreen. Display Audio also integrates touch operation of the menu and return functions for a modern and sleek look.

The system can also be controlled with illuminated steering-wheel mounted controls, including a touchpad control that enables an alphabetic search of a range of features using a vertical swiping motion. Search items appear on the color Driver Information Interface (DII) display located in the lower portion of the instrument display, just below the digital speedometer display. The system can also be controlled via voice commands, after pressing and releasing the steering-wheel-mounted talk button.

Driver Information Interface (DII)
All Civic Si models feature the Driver Information Interface (DII) integrated into the operation of the 7-Inch Display Audio Touchscreen. The DII is positioned in the instrument display, just below the digital speedometer. The color TFT DII display puts a wide range of information in front of the driver where it's easy to see. The steering wheel mounted buttons and touchpad control make it easy to search among choices on the DII, and then make the desired selection.

DII displays the following items:

  • Driving Computer
  • Performance Driving Information
  • Smart Maintenance
  • Audio System
  • Telephone
  • SMS/Email
  • Apple CarPlay™
  • Android Auto™
  • (See the Interior section for more information.)

One-Cable Connection
In all Civic Si models, compatible iPhones and Android (with Android Auto app.) phones loaded with the compatible HondaLink app can be connected to the 1.5-amp USB port with a single USB cable (provided with the phone), to display navigation information on the 7-inch Display Audio Touchscreen. This makes connection simpler and less costly than Honda's previous system that required three cables to make the connection between the smartphone and the vehicle.

Apple CarPlay™
All Civic Si models offer standard Apple CarPlay compatibility. By connecting the iPhone to the car using the phone's USB cable (supplied with the phone) and the Civic Si's 1.5-amp USB port, CarPlay features can be accessed. (Note that the CarPlay system will not work using the USB port located inside the Civic Si's center console.)

Android Auto™
All Civic Si models offer standard Android Auto™ compatibility. By connecting a compatible Android phone to the car using the phone's USB cable (supplied with the phone) and the Civic Si's 1.5 amp USB port, the Android Auto platform is enabled.

SiriusXM® Radio
A new generation 2.0 version of SiriusXM® Radio is a standard feature in all Civic Si models, and it provides more than 165 channels of digital programming with near CD-quality sound. The SiriusXM® signal is beamed from two broadcast satellites positioned in geostationary orbit above Earth. The beams from these two broadcast satellites combine to span the entire continental United States and some of Canada.

Pandora® Compatibility
All Civic Si models are designed to provide a convenient interface for Pandora®, a free music service that allows users to open an account online and create up to 100 personalized internet "radio stations" that are based on favorite songs or artists. Users can choose among their stations and listen via computer, and can also download a free smartphone Pandora® app, which allows users listen to the same list of personalized stations via their compatible phone. Although Pandora® is free, phone data charges apply.

HondaLink®
The Display Audio system with next generation HondaLink that is standard in Si models allows the owner's digital lifestyle to seamlessly integrate with the car and provides access to a world of cloud-based information. The application-based platform connects customers to online content both inside and outside the car. The connection between the system and the user's smartphone is made through the Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® wireless interface. A HondaLink phone app provides convenient access for many services including location searches, local weather, messaging, Maintenance Minder alerts, service scheduling by phone, and access to the vehicle Owners Guide.

HondaLink Assist
An additional new feature on Civic Si is HondaLink Assist, which can help request emergency assistance for drivers. If a compatible phone is paired through Bluetooth®7 HandsFreeLink®, there is a cellular connection and an airbag deployment sensor is triggered, the system is designed to automatically attempt to notify an operator, report the car's current location, and allow occupants to talk directly to the operator. The operator can then contact emergency services if needed.

Siri Eyes Free
All Civic Si models integrate Apple's Siri Eyes Free mode imbedded in Apple CarPlay. Compatible iPhone® users will be able to operate Siri through familiar voice commands by pressing and holding the TALK button on the steering wheel for two seconds when their iPhone is paired via Bluetooth®. Using Eyes Free mode, Siri takes hands-free functionality even further and helps to minimize the potential for distractions by keeping the iOS device's screen from lighting up.

Owners can direct Siri to perform a number of specific tasks while they keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel. Capabilities include:

  • Send text messages and e-mails
  • Read incoming text messages and emails
  • Set up calendar entries, reminders, and alarms
  • Check the weather
  • Turn-by-turn voice navigation
  • Sports scores and stock quotes

SMS Text Messaging
All Civic Si models have a standard SMS text message function that can read incoming texts aloud over the audio system, and allow the driver to reply with any of six factory preset messages. The system works with SMS-capable cell phones that have an active data plan and the Message Access Profile (MAP), such as the Blackberry, Droid X and others. Apple iPhone models do not support this feature, but Siri Eyes Free CarPlay mode (iPhone 5, 6 and 7 at time of launch) offers the ability to initiate, hear and respond to text messages via voice commands.

Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink®
The Bluetooth® HandsFreeLink® interface is designed to offer hands-free operation for many Bluetooth®-enabled mobile telephones. Standard on all Civic Si models, the system wirelessly connects the driver's cell phone to the vehicle's audio system. This allows the driver to make or answer cell phone calls without removing hands from the steering wheel. The system is compatible with Bluetooth®-enabled cell phones that have the Hands Free Profile (HFP). A list of compatible phones can be found at handsfreelink.com or honda.com.

USB Ports and Power Outlets
All Civic Si models have a 12-volt power outlet is positioned at the base of the center stack on the right of the lower storage tray, with a 1.5-amp USB port positioned on the left and a 1.0-amp USB port is positioned inside the console.

Honda Civic Si - Comfort and Convenience

Like other 10th Generation Civic models, the Civic Si Coupe and Sedan offer an elevated level of comfort and convenience with a host of standard premium features. From the convenience of Smart Entry and Pushbutton Start/Stop to the ease of use of the electric parking brake and Hill Start Assist, the Civic Si Coupe and Sedan offer useful technologies that make driving easier and more convenient.

Key Comfort and Convenience Features

  • Dual-Zone Automatic Climate Control*
  • Heated Front Seats*
  • Smart Entry and Push Button Start
  • Walk Away Auto Lock*
  • Capless Fueling System*
  • Electric Parking Brake*
  • Hill Start Assist* (See the Chassis section for more information.)

* First for Civic Si

Smart Entry and Push Button Start/Stop
The 2017 Civic Si offers the upscale convenience of keyless Smart Entry and Push Button Start/Stop.

Smart Entry
Smart Entry also allows the driver to approach, open and use the trunk without using a key or pressing a button on the remote. With the remote in his or her possession, the driver simply presses the release button and opens the trunk. As a safety and convenience feature, the Smart Entry system will not allow the transmitter fob to be locked in the interior of the Civic Si.

Push Button Start/Stop
On both Civic Si models, once the driver has opened the door and is seated, the driver simply pushes the START/STOP button positioned on the instrument panel while pressing the brake pedal and fully depressing the clutch to start the vehicle. Powertrain operation and certain electrical functions are ended when the START/STOP button is pressed again at the conclusion of the drive. For accessory mode, the driver simply presses the START/STOP button without pressing the brake pedal. The new Civic Si's START/STOP button features a pulsating light to help the driver more easily locate the button.

Locking
After parking, a press of the LOCK button on the remote will simultaneously lock all the doors and trunk. A touch of the soft-touch lock button on either front door handle locks all doors and trunk to secure the Civic Si. The system will not allow the remote to be locked in the interior of the Civic Si.

Walk Away Auto Lock®
The new Walk Away Auto Lock feature automatically locks the Civic Si when the driver leaves the vehicle. This hands-free locking capability adds everyday convenience that's especially useful when the driver has his or her hands full or is distracted. In typical use, when all doors are closed and the driver walks away, the Civic Si will automatically lock when the key holder's distance from the vehicle exceeds 6.5 feet for two seconds or more and when no other key is detected inside the vehicle. An audible buzzer sounds and the hazard lights flash to confirm that the vehicle has locked. The Walk Away Door Lock feature is programmable, and may be turned on or off as the driver prefers. (See the Body and Exterior section for more information.)

Auto On/Off Headlights
All Civic Si models feature auto-on/off headlights for greater convenience. The headlights are multi-reflector/projector-beam units on all Civic Si models. All Civic models feature dramatic LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL).

Capless Fueling System
Capless fueling eliminates the fuel cap, meaning that fueling the vehicle simply requires opening the fuel lid, refueling, and then closing the lid. This smart and easy-to-use design eliminates the need to touch a dirty fuel cap, reduces the possibility of damaging the vehicle's paint with the fuel cap or tether, or forgetting the fuel cap at the gas station. It also eliminates the possibility of activating an emissions warning by failing to properly re-install the fuel cap. And finally, the capless fueling system allows the use of a smaller fuel-cap door, which cleans up the lines of the vehicle.

Electric Parking Brake(EPB)
The Civic Si's Electric Parking Brake makes using the parking brake easier and more comfortable and frees up precious center console space for storage and other functions. (See the Chassis section for more information.)

Hill Start Assist
The Hill Start Assist function helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when the driver switches from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal while the vehicle is stopped on a hill. (See the Chassis section for more information.)

Honda Civic Si - Safety Technology

With their advanced unibody engineering, the greatest use of high-strength steel in model history, and a wide array of advanced passive-safety features, like the rest of the 2017 Civic model range, the new Si Coupe and Si Sedan were designed to achieve a superb level of active and passive safety performance. This applies to the vehicle occupants, as well as for the occupants of other vehicles and other road users, including motorcycle and bicycle riders and pedestrians.

Passive-safety features such as advanced front airbags, SmartVent® front side airbags, and side curtain airbags with rollover sensor help protect occupants in a collision. In addition, the extensive use of high-strength steel and advanced crash engineering features, including the Civic Si's Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure and crash stroke front frame rails help better protect occupants in a collision while minimizing weight for superior fuel efficiency. Civic Si Sedan gains tailor-tempered B-pillars and rear frame structures.

Pedestrian Injury Mitigation Design
Structures in the front of the 2017 Civic Si are designed to help absorb energy in the event of a collision with a pedestrian. Research by Honda shows that the following features can dramatically improve a pedestrian's chance of survival if struck by a moving vehicle.

Specific pedestrian head injury mitigation features include:

  • Hood is designed to deform if contact is made with either an adult or a child pedestrian
  • Sufficient clearance exists between the hood and hard engine parts, allowing the hood to deform if impacted by a pedestrian
  • Windshield base has a unique section structure for efficient impact energy absorption
  • Energy-absorbing fender mounts and supports
  • Breakaway windshield wiper pivots
  • Deformable hood hinges

Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) with Traction Control
Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) is an Electronic Stability Control system that works in conjunction with the Drive-by-Wire™ throttle and 4-channel ABS systems to enhance control capability while the vehicle is accelerating, braking, cornering or when the driver makes a sudden maneuver. VSA functions by applying brake force to one or more wheels independently while also managing the throttle, ignition and fuel systems to help the vehicle maintain the driver's intended path of travel.

The VSA system constantly analyzes data from sensors that monitor wheel speed, steering input, lateral and longitudinal G forces and yaw rate. It compares the driver's control inputs with the vehicle's actual response. Whenever the actual response falls outside of a predetermined acceptable range, VSA intervenes with a corrective action. For instance, if VSA detects an oversteer condition, the system may apply braking force to the outside front and rear wheels to counteract the unintended yawing effect. In the event of understeer, VSA may apply braking to the inside rear wheel while reducing engine power to help return the vehicle to its intended course.

VSA also provides a limited-slip differential effect for the front wheels by applying braking force to a slipping wheel, thereby redirecting driving force to the wheel with more traction. VSA is calibrated to function in a near-transparent manner, and in many cases the driver will not even be aware of its operation. However, anytime the system is enhancing vehicle stability, an indicator light flashes in the instrument cluster. While the driver can reduce the traction control effectiveness allowing more wheel slip during stuck condition by pressing the VSA button, ABS remains fully operational at all times. (See the Chassis section for more information.)

Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS)
Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) is standard on 2017 Civic models, including the Si Sedan and Si Coupe. The system incorporates driving stability technology that initiates steering inputs that prompt the driver to steer in the correct direction during cornering and in slippery road conditions. Using vehicle speed and steering angle data, Motion-Adaptive EPS works with Honda's Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) and Electric Power Steering to detect instability in slippery road conditions both during cornering and under braking and automatically initiates steering inputs aimed at prompting the driver to steer in the correct direction. This advanced technology supports the driver's action in operating the vehicle more safely and comfortably.

Two examples of how Motion-Adaptive Electric Power Steering (EPS) functions in conjunction with VSA are:

  • Stabilizes Vehicle under Braking
This function helps to correct the driver's steering input to reduce vehicle instability when the driver is braking hard on road surfaces with varying friction coefficients (such as pavement that is partially covered with dirt or snow).
  • Mitigates Understeer and Oversteer
To mitigate potential understeer or oversteer situations, the system helps correct the steering inputs to help the driver trace the curve.

(See the Chassis section for more information.)

Brake Assist
A function of the Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA®) system, the Brake Assist feature recognizes emergency or hard braking situations and almost instantly applies added braking force. This Brake Assist feature is controlled by a special logic in the system that evaluates the pedal application rate and force to recognize a panic stop situation. At that point, the VSA modulator pump increases braking pressure while the pedal is still being pressed to ensure maximum stopping force, an action that can help shorten braking distance.

Advanced 4-Channel ABS with Electronic Brake Distribution
The Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan are fitted with 4-wheel disc brakes with 4-channel anti-lock braking (ABS). The ABS system also incorporates Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD) circuitry that automatically proportions front-to-rear brake force based on the vehicle's dynamic load on each wheel. Larger front brake disc dimensions and a larger master cylinder improve stopping performance and pedal feel. (See the Chassis section for more information.)

Crash Locking Tongue
The Civic Si's front seatbelts use a "crash locking tongue" latch plate design that locks the webbing in place during a collision, helping to restrain the occupant. During normal driving conditions the seatbelt webbing moves freely through the latch plate in the normal manner. However, in the event of a collision, forces exerted on the lap and shoulder sections of the seatbelt push the webbing against a "reaction surface" inside the latch plate, locking the webbing in place.

Advanced Front Airbags
Both the driver and front passenger are protected by advanced front airbags (i-SRS). Like other Honda vehicles, the driver's front airbag is located in the steering wheel while the passenger airbag is located on the top of the dash. When deployed, the passenger airbag inflates upward and then rearward to maximize its protective potential while reducing the likelihood of injuries caused by airbag deployment.

Driver's Spiral Airbag
The 2017 Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan incorporate spiral stitching into the driver's front airbag. The spiral nature of the airbag promotes early restraint and maintains a constant pressure by reducing volume early and maximizing volume later in deployment.

Front Passenger's Safety Vent Airbag
The passenger's front airbag in both new Civic Si models feature a safety vent system that increases safety for the front passenger in a frontal collision involving an airbag deployment. If the passenger is sitting "out of position" – such as leaning forward in the pathway of the airbag deployment – the auxiliary vents remain open, directing a significant amount of gas out and away from the occupant. As a result, the potential for injury from the airbag striking an out-of-position passenger is reduced. However, if the passenger is correctly seated, the airbag has an internal tether that will close the auxiliary vents at the necessary time to provide optimal occupant restraint.

Driver and Front Passenger Side Airbags
Side airbags mounted in the outboard area of each front seatback are designed to help provide pelvic and thorax protection for the driver and front passenger in the event of a severe side impact. The side airbag design allows the side airbags to deploy in a manner that helps mitigate the risk of injury to a smaller seat occupant.

Side Curtain Airbags
All outboard seating positions are protected by side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor system. In the event of a severe side impact, the side curtain airbags deploy from modules in the roof, providing a significant level of head protection in the window area. In the unlikely event of a rollover, a roll-rate sensor, along with multiple G sensors, determine the rate of roll and deploy the side curtain airbags accordingly. The side curtain airbags will also deploy and provide head protection in frontal impacts as necessary. For example, small overlap impacts, where the front corner of the vehicle collides with a solid object.

Whiplash Mitigation Front Seat Design
Both of the front seats are designed to help mitigate the severity of neck injuries in the event of a rear impact. In the event of a rear crash, the seat efficiently disperses rear impact forces against the occupant as the seatback cushion compresses relative to the occupant's head. The seatback springs are optimized so that in a rear crash, when the seatback is pushed forward into the occupant, the seat will absorb the occupant's mass in manner that can help minimize the severity of a whiplash injury.

Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren (LATCH)
All Civic models, including the Si Coupe and Si Sedan, are equipped with a child seat-mounting system called LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren). Both of the second-row outboard seating positions are fitted with dedicated LATCH lower anchor attachment points. Tether anchors are provided the remaining middle seating position.
The LATCH system provides two lower anchors and an upper tether anchor. When used with a compatible child seat, the LATCH system provides attachment points between the child seat and the vehicle seat without having to use the vehicle's seat belts.

Additionally, all seat belts except the driver's are equipped with a locking retractor that can be used to help secure any child seat. Both rear side doors are also equipped with childproof door locks for added protection.

Multi-Angle Rearview Camera
All 2015 and newer Honda models, including the 2017 Civic Si Coupe and Si Sedan, incorporate a multi-angle rearview camera. Viewable on the vehicle's 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen, the camera can show a normal view (130 degrees), wide view (180 degrees) or top view, when the transmission is in Reverse. Dynamic guidelines project the vehicle's path based on the driver's steering inputs. (See the Interior section for more information.)
